Another average disc from WASP.......2007-07-02

Somewhere along the way Blackie Lawless decided he'd written enough songs that he could simply recycle the same ones over and over again rather than write anything that sounded new & different. Some bands can do that and retain record sales & critical praise (AC/DC, for instance), while most find themselves a niche audience that dwindles progressively. I'd say WASP is an example of the latter.

I think WASP evolved with each record up through The Headless Children, the band's 4th disc. After that came The Crimson Idol, and though many love that record (good for them), I think that was the beginning of Blackie's seemingly endless song recycling period. Too many of the songs on The Crimson Idol sound exactly the same: same chord progression, same drum beats & fills, even the same melody, just different words. From there it's been one re-hash after another. Dominator is the latest in the series.

Mercy, the lead track, is the best of the bunch. Heaven's Hung in Black seems to be a favorite among reviews I've read, but it pales in comparison to the "ballads" on other WASP discs. Deal with the Devil, the last track, sounds out of place on this album. It's the only track that features departed guitarist Darrell Roberts, so my guess would be that this is an older track that was thrown on to fill out the album.

I do give Blackie credit for at least one thing: the guy continues to churn out album after album, while many of his 80's metal counterparts have but half the catalog WASP has amassed. And even though I think the bulk of these albums are average, for some reason a I keep buying each one. Gotta give Blackie credit for that, too.

Just like the old days.......2007-06-21

I've been a fan of W.A.S.P. for nearly a year now. I had alot of catching up to do with their music since I was born in 92. Their first 4 albums were incredibly good.The crimson Idol was ok. then I saw that most of their releases throughout the 90's sucked except for K.F.D and Helldorado. The neon God stuff was geniously well written and had a really good storyline, but it sounded bad. I became very disappoined with the band and started wondering if they would ever get their original sound back. then I heard the preview on their website for the song called the burning man. MY HOPE RETURNED TO ME. This cd captures the raw sound of W.A.S.P. AND the lighter side of them as well. out of all of the songs, there is only 1 that I don't like. it's called heavens blessed. it's ok, but theres something about it that I just don't like too much. If you have been spacing out and not paying attention to W.A.S.P. anymore because of their bad releases, It's time to take some Ritalin and go buy this IMMEDIATLEY!!!!!! don't get me wrong, it's not a copy of their old stuff. it has a VERY SLIGHT modern sound. but it deserves to be put in the well respected category of original W.A.S.P.. It's right up there with, W.A.S.P., The Last Command, Inside The Electric Circus, and The Headless Children.

Mercy, is a heavy song but it's catchy as well. It sounds a bit like the song Wild Child.

Then we get to, long way to go. at the beginning of the song, you think that the devil is talking to you. Blackie has a demonic sounding voice in this song, along with great lyrics.

Take me up is a very emotional(but not sad or depressing like the modern music of today) song that will make you wonder if you really bought a W.A.S.P. cd. only makes you wonder because it's so soft. But then it gets a little heavier and the song builds itself up until the Chorus. It's such an incredible song.

After that there is the burning man. It's my favorite song on the cd. It's fast but not too fast, it's catchy, it's loud, it's got life to it, and the lyrics are strikingly powerful and well written. I think this, along with take me up and heavens hung in black, are the best songs on the cd. all the rest of the songs still kick massive amounts of @$$.

Then there is heavens hung in black. It's a very good song which shows the conversation between St.Peter and a dead soldier killed in Iraq. the soldier goes to Heaven and finds that there is no more room because of so many people being killed, so he can't come in. the chorus is the soldier talking.

After that, you have heavens blessed. I, personally don't like the song too much. It sounds good but for some reason, when i listen to it, i don't like it. But you might.

After that is teacher. Another good song with catchy melodies and cool lyrics.

Heavens hung in black reprise. Not too much to say about this song. It's cool. It's basically heavens hung in black but theres something alittle different about it.

After that is deal with the devil. Consider this like a bonus track. Right when you think that the cd has closed itself up with the H.H.I.B. reprise, you hear this wild sounding adventure of a song pounding through your speakers. It makes you wonder what the next album will be like.
hell, this entire cd makes you wonder what the next album will be like. Probably even better and closer sounding to old W.A.S.P. than this album is. I hope this helped you and sorry it's so long.

This is w.a.s.p where they first started.These songs are lot like his older stuff which is great!!.Blackie is one of my favorites of all times.
It's too bad ozzy does'nt put him in the ozzfest.I think he would steal

This album is GREAT from start to finish!! Blackie is the real deal!! He's one of the only rockers out there that still has the balls to say what he thinks without apology. I love the abusive relationship/America policing the world analogy.

The Next Chapter..........2007-05-28

After nearly a month owning this album, I feel it is now time to write a review on it. After countless listens I finally have a feel for what this album is about.

Many people were somewhat dissapointed with W.A.S.P.'s last release of the double concept album "The Neon God." and for that reason, many people had doubts about this album as well. Where could Blackie and the boys go from there? Are their best days behind them? All that and many more questions were raised. Once the track listing for "Dominator" was released, the concern right away was the length of the album. Now, getting into the meat of the album, the length isn't that big of a deal in my opinion. Here is a track-by-track synopsis of "Dominator."

1. Mercy - This is the perfect quintessential W.A.S.P. way to begin an album. The listener quickly identifies with the W.A.S.P. way of song writing and is not overwhelmed. A heavy, rocking song to get the listener pumped and ready for the rest of the ride. Very reminiscent of say, their song "Tormentor" from their debut album. 4/5

2. Long Long Way To Go - A pretty heavy riff to begin the song. Again, the band doesn't really venture into new territories here, but the song is a good and heavy rocking track. Chorus can be a bit repetitive but the guitar work more than makes up for that. 3.5/5

3. Take Me Up - This song took me a few listens to really grab and hold it. Starts soft and makes you think it's going to be a ballad; then the classic W.A.S.P. riffs come in. Dark lyrics thast are also very mylodic, which is what we've all come to expect from Blackie and his song writing. This has become one of my favorites on the album. 4.5/5

4. The Burning Man - This is my favorite track on the album. Killer lyrics, classic guitar playing, and just an overall catchy song that keeps you rocking. Blackie seems to put forth every emotion into this song. 5/5

5. Heaven's Hung In Black - This track has gotten a lot of attention from W.A.S.P. fans as it is deemed one of the best ballad-type songs Blackie has ever written. Although I like the song, and the message behind it is also clear, I feel it doesn't do anything different from previous W.A.S.P. "ballads." Think "Forever Free" on their Headless Children album and you can pretty m,uch understand this song as well. It does have an awesome intro though with one of the countries best patriotic tunes ever. Great song that is one of their best, but in rhe end, isn't really anything different. 4.5/5

6. Heaven's Blessed - At first glance it seems like it could be another ballad to continue the previous track, but this is hardly the case. This song is heavy and really pulls no punches. The message is also loud and clear and Blackie again pours every raw emotion into his singing and lyrics. 4/5

7. Teacher - In my opinion the weakest song on the album. It took me a few listens to get what this song was trying to say. After I figured it out I can see that it does fit with the overall theme of the album, but it feels rushed and poorly placed within the track listing. I say if it was put earlier in the album, (3rd or 4th track) it would have a bigger impact and not feel so rushed but after the previous two tracks it seems a bit out of place. 3.5/5

8. Heaven's Hung In Black [Reprise] - In my opinion this is a good soft track, but I can also say that there really was no need for the Reprise. I would have maybe included this track as a bonus acoustic version at the end of the album. Where it is placed seems a bit random and kills the rocking mood a little bit before the end of the album. If it had been included as a bonus track, it would have opened room for another heavy song to keep the mood somewhat consistent. 3.5/5

9. Deal With The Devil - Some have said that this song is out of place and doesn't really belong on this album. I disagree. After hearing the album many times and coming to the understanding of the overall theme, I can say that I believe it fits perfectly. Coming off the heels of the [Reprise] it may feel and seem out of place but after a few listens it does gel. A rocking, heavy, classic W.A.S.P. tune to end an album that is just shy of 45 minutes in length. 4/5

There you have it. The album may be a bit on the short side compared to most albums now-a-days, but considering the message Blackie aimed to portray in this album, what's on there says it all. I highly recommend this album for any and all W.A.S.P. fans as Blackie and the boys show that they still got it! Never Say Die!

Recorded at four different studio sessions in Nashville, Los Angeles, and Stockholm, with a cast of musicians that includes his road band the Pinkhearts, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Ethan Johns, Chris Stills, Bucky Baxter, and Greg Leisz, Demolition proves that Adams is still a work in progress: brilliant one moment, sloppy the next. When he's good, he's very good: the rousing country-rocker "Hallelujah," the brooding acoustic ballads "Dear Chicago" and "Tomorrow," and the jangly power-pop number "Gimme a Sign" are as fine as anything on Gold. But Adams sometimes lapses into mimicry, as he does on "Nuclear" and "Starting to Hurt," both of which could be outtakes from a U2 album. "Tennessee Sucks," a chronicle of a boredom-filled summer day in Nashville, sounds half-baked, while the closing track, "Jesus (Don't Touch My Baby)," which finds Adams (on synthesizer, guitars, bass, and drum machine) droning on like Leonard Cohen, falls in the "failed experiment" category. Despite its bright spots, Demolition ultimately comes off as a mixed bag. --David Hill

Aging Just Fine, Thank You!.......2007-07-24

I was in a used record store the other day and found Demolition...And hey, this record is surprisingly great!...People's negative reviews make me wonder if they heard the same record. But, since I'm getting into this years afters its initial release, I have no hype or expectation to go on. The acoustic songs on here are among his most devastatingly beautiful. There's four of them in particular, "You Will Always Be The Same," "Tomorrow," "Cry On Demand," and "She Wants To Play Hearts." If you're interested in Adams's fragile, acoustic songs that threaten to shatter your heart with each whispered nuance, then these 4 are indispensable. Then there's a couple rock songs, and a couple country-ish ones, and a couple of those are great also. So despite it being a little uneven, at least half of Demotion is holding up quite well.

I bought this CD after hearing "Desire" on an episode of "House". While "Desire" is my favorite cut from the CD I like the whole CD which is unusual for me. I usually only like the song I buy a CD for and maybe one other song. The whole CD was enjoyable and I'll consider buying other CD's by Ryan Adams.

the reviews that delve into a laborious description of how Demolition is a collection of leftover tracks that didn't end up on his previous album, Gold. I love this album more than Gold, and the truth is that Gold is a bit laborious itself, at least to listen to all the way through (16 songs). Demolition is a more concise and, to me, a much more tightly themed record. Don't be quick to trash this one.

Ryan Adams is a musical chameleon. The opener Nuclear doesn't sound like anything he's done thus far. Although at this point I'm not sure if there's anything Ryan hasn't explored (Smiths-influenced ballads, Rap, NsYnc covers). I like this album a lot because there is such a huge variety, every song seems like it could be a piece to a larger album. Standouts include Cry On Demand, Game of Hearts, You will always be the same. I'd recommend this to anyone interested in Adams. This isn't an album just for the die hard fans, it's actually pretty accessible.

This is the 1980 debut from Girlschool.

Not quite as superb as the follow up, the magnificent "Hit and Run" which also just got Sanctuary's reissue treatment, but close.

All the same elements there. Punk-inspired/fuled NWOBHM (let's face it, all the NWOBHM bands really reveal their essential rock 'n' roll qualities 25 years later) with a heavy dose of Motorhead.

The songwriting and production would improve on the next release, but all the spirit, fire, drive and rock 'n' roll attitude is present right here.

A must own!

I pray Sanctuary now reissues 1982's "Screaming Blue Murder" with it's original U.K. mix. That would be the final icing on the cake!!!!

there's not a bad song on the album. infectious hospital waste, 44 caliber brain surgery and gellid remains are the highlights. but they are all great tunes. it's pure chaos from start to finish.

Great classic thrash/death metal. .44 Caliber Brain Surgery has to be one of the best metal songs ever written. Its a shame that these guys didnt get the recognition they deserve. If you see this at a used CD store, go out and get it. Amazon surely isnt going to get it anytime soon.

Demolition Hammer : "Tortured Existence".......2003-09-25

I bought this on cassette back in 1991 when it was first released, and just purchaced it used on CD. I can say it's still just as good as I remember....

These guys were one of the most overlooked Death/Thrash Metal bands around. The music here is furious, and very brutal. It's also a very polished sound, and everything fits together very nicely. The guitars solos are mostly melodic in nature, and the riffs are some of the best you'll hear....

If you're interested in hearing one of the best Death/Thrash Metal bands that came out in the early 90's, this is the CD you've been searching for.....

It's almost impossible to find new, so if you get a chance to buy one used, don't hesitate. It's a masterpiece that was highly regarded as one of the best CD's of it's time. It's a shame it's now out of stock...

I used to own this on tape. Its got a different singer from Time Bomb and is much faster, but until you hear .44 caliber brain surgery you have not heard the full spectrum of Demolition Hammer.

well, I love hanoi rocks old albums, and I love twelve shots, but this album is below there standard, sounds like a decent mike monroe album not a hanoi rocks album, best track is a cover of phil lynotts dear miss lonely hearts and worst is reggea rocker (the worst song they have ever recorded), I really wanted this album to be great, but it's not, sorry

I've been a Twisted Sister for a long time and this is going back to the original Secret Record's release of 'UNDER THE BLADE.'I've enjoyed all of their CD's, but this is not a complete best of CD. I feel that they could have done better with the selection of songs.

Still Not The Best Of Twisted Sister...But Still Hungry.......2006-03-14

As far as best of albums go, no one ever gets everything they want. This isn't the best Twisted Sister collection out there, but it ain't the worst either. It still baffles me that "Burn In Hell" isn't on any of them, but I guess it's cool that they put some songs from "Still Hungry", the re-recorded "Stay Hungry" classic.

Great songwriting.......2001-03-20

I saw Carrie Johnson (who was half of 22 Brides) and her new band perform in a small club in Tempe, AZ in May 2000. I picked up this CD and I like the songwriting a lot, it is very melodic and the songs are memorable. In chatting with her, I noted the Beatles-type influence in her work, and she said that she was very much influenced by pop songwriters (such as Lennon/McCartney) who focus on strong melodies. The CD is a little too produced for my tastes, but the songs are still very good.

"Demolition Man" is the only studio-track on this EP (from the Stallone/Snypes-movie of the same name), the other five from a consert in 1993 (or 94?) in Italy. At Villa Manin to be presise. King of pain, Love is stronger..., Shape of my heart, It's probably me and John Lennons' (and Beatles') A day in the life. The performance is great, but I wish they would have added If I ever lose my faith -I have it on vcr from the same show, and it sounds so "mighty" -that's the word. However, the recording offers a live-album-feel -and is one my most played from my collection.

A FORGOTTEN GEM.......2004-01-12

While watching Demolition Man on T.V. last week, I remembered this little gem that I had on cassette. Well, it didn't take me long to track down an out of print copy of it on CD. While only the first song on this CD is from the movie, the remaining 5 tracks are live cuts from Sting's July 25, 1993 show in Italy. Along with his 2 live cuts from The Secret Policeman's Other Ball CD, these are the best live cuts by Sting that you've probably never heard. Definitely worth the time and trouble of tracking down (like I did).

Since his widely publicized departure from the almost legendary trio The Police, Sting has expanded his musical horizons on more than one occasion in his solo career. Some of his moves have beeen widely criticized for being soft ventures into new territory from hard -core Police fans, while others have decided to grow with the former school teacher.
"Demolition Man", a track that originally unveiled itself on The Police's "Ghost In The Machine" LP, is re-worked for the Sly Stallone Wesley Snipes film of the same name and offers some interesting live tracks as well.
The "Soul Power Mix" is Sting's first true blue venture into hip- hop and it is a dazzling piece of work with it's lively machine driven drum beat and matching vocal riff. This is one of the rare instances that a re- worked track struts an identity of it's own and certainly rates as one of Sting's funkier musical moments.
He adds a punchier and warmer sounding tonation to his bass playing than the "Ghost In The Machine" version on the single release from the film,which also contains orcestrial synth stabs that are ill -placed and dilute some of the live backbone away fro m it's strong foundation. Nevertheless,this was the re-work that was pressed for radio airplay, but anyone that picked up this maxi- single wuld concur that the bonus of the package are the live cuts.The first of these is the potent "It's Probably Me".
This was the third version of the song that was thrown out to the masses with the first being the bass- oriented blues tinged version with Eric Clapton from the Jason Patric / Jennifer Jason Leigh film "Rush",the second the more free flowing minus the drums take on Sting's "Ten Summoners Tales" LP, and the third re-incarnation offering some great rhythm guitar solos and an unlikely yet effective off beat tempo at the chorus that qualifies it to be a well done hybrid of the first two creations.
Unfortunately,I recieved the single package with the Beatles track "A Day In The Life" but minus the live version of "King Of Pain" from the last Police LP "Synchronicity". Anyone looking for some insight as to the quality of that particular piece of work on a liuve scale will have to re- visit my review upon recieving another copy of this single and/ or take in the commentary by the wide panel of individuals that recieved the single package with every song that was mentioned in the track listings on this site.
Overall, even with the omission of "King Of Pain' on this version of the single, the "Demolition Man" single,based on the brilliance of the the "Soul Power Mix" and the live take on "It's Probably Me",is a strong and entertaining enough one- two combination to find itself landing on solid three star ground with four star possibilities upon further review.

A magnificent "It's probably me" version.......2002-12-14

The live version of "It's probably me" is brilliant!... I have heard it many times and its getting better and better. My hope is that Sting collects his best live recordings (also for the recent material) on a CD, and this version of "It's probably me" should be included.

Nice, fun live EP.......2001-11-03

This is a 6 song "EP" released by Sting. The cover makes it appear like this CD is the soundtrack for the movie Domolition Man. But, it only contains the one song from the movie. The rest of the songs are live versions of Sting/Police classics. There is a real Demolition Man soundtrack CD available.

Although this is an EP, it is almost the length of a normal ablum at 36 minutes. It is a fun, lively CD. The live recordings come from a concert in Italy, with a stripped down band, of drums, keyboards and guitar.
(Sting usually tours with a much bigger band). This smaller band is able to really break lose. The live versions of the songs are stretched out between 5 to 7 minutes and are played with a lot of energy. Last song is an interesting version of the Beatle's A Day in the Life.
