The final chapter of an era.......2006-07-28

Bear Family does again with a magnificent, extravagant, beautiful and MEGA EXPENSIVE box set that closes the Everly Brothers story in 1972 when they went their separate ways. Everything from late 65 to 72 including every WB and RCA recordings as well as other goodies that come along with such a package. This time they threw in a bonus DVD with live TV appearances WHICH IS VEIWABLE ON ANY DVD PLAYER SO STOP YOUR CRYING. It is fun seeing the Everly Brothers along side The Chordetts (Mr. Sandman) and the man who would cause Don agita for the rest of the 60's Andy Williams. And once again a great hardcover book is included bringing this chapter of the Everly Brothers to an end. There would be reunion shows and new records but it was when they were on Warner Brothers and later RCA, they were at the height of their creative powers

Words fall short on how great both sets are and I highly recommend them both even though the cost equals a mortgage payment.

Wonderful set.......2006-07-28

My copy included the book and DVD and the DVD was NTSC format - typical for North American DVD releases. What a huge and comprehensive collection. The book gives you details on recording sessions, concerts and radio/TV appearances. You can read it as you listen and get a sense of their professional careers. It contains lots of photos and excerpts from reviews and so on. The discs are amazing. Albums like "Stories We Could Tell" sounded flat on a previous CD release, but what a difference here. The only improvement would have been to include the BBC material that was previously released and currently out of print. But that's nitpicking. The Bear Family Everly Brothers are all worth every penny.

The DVD plays on ALL players - USA and Europe.......2006-07-22

The other review is absurd...he hasn't even checked out the set, which has an amazing book. All Bear Family label sets that have bonus DVDs, provide DVDs that are universal, play on all USA and European players. THE AMAZON STATEMENT IS WRONG!! That one star review should be withdrawn! Check out the other two amazing Bear Family boxsets of the Everly brothers too.

Smart Indie Space Rock .......2007-06-23

I first discovered Rotary Downs a few years ago and was amazed that I had never heard of them before. Even a couple of albums later (and another new one in the works) I'm still surprised at how few people know about these very talented artists. In a way, it makes me almost selfishly wish that others won't; however, I love this band too much not to pile on a whole heap of praise for their work. They deserve to be heard and appreciated.

It's hard to describe the sound of Rotary Downs because it keeps evolving, and "Chained to the Chariot" is my favorite of their albums so far. With each release, they seem to add new layers of complexity to an already well-developed, finely crafted blend of lyrics and instrumentation. In Chained, the addition of horns and keyboards really fills out the overall sound, creating a fuller, richer musical experience. Despite an often laid back delivery and groovy, sometimes bouncy melodies, most of Marler's lyrics bear a greater depth and weight than one might first expect. The band is from New Orleans, and the aftermath of hurricane Katrina is an obvious influence in at least a couple of songs. There is real genius here, some great messages with a particular verve for word play. The music is genuinely interesting. Featuring unpredictable beats and discordant guitar riffs, plus the unexpected appeal of James Marler's quirky, croaking voice, you will find it all expertly delivered on a dreamy, space-rock foundation with the sort of seeming ease that only really accomplished artists can do. They make this stuff sound so easy, and so enjoyable.

There are simply no bad songs on this album, and each track travels easily into the next, with shifting tempos ranging from languid to frenetic, taking the listener on a strange journey into music space while keeping its underlying themes firmly planted on the ground. This is a great album to just throw in the player and let it go, and yourself with it.

Great record from underrated band.......2006-07-22

A knack for melody, neo-psychedelic textures, soothing vocals - this record boasts all of the above. "The Next Face" is one of the standout tracks with its fuzzy bass hook and meandering ethereal guitar coda. Dreamy. The title track - another standout track - is a gorgeous piano-driven piece. I hear this band recently broke up. If that's true, this record is a nice swansong. By the way, check out their album, Titletron. 5 stars for that one!

This box includes all recordings from 60`plus upto late 72.There is a big difference in music from the late 50`s.
It is easy to hear that it is not ordinary cigarettes they are smoking,it is reflected in the liveshow from 69.Weird show,they where not focused on the music.This box is looking amazing,extra DVD is good.The book is a amazing,big,much pictures.It is a diary of Everly Brother`s musical activities.
This is for diehard Everly Brothers fan.
