A gentle line-drawing marks the cover of the Hearless Bastards' sophomore album, All This Time, just a woman holding a dragonfly by its tail. Singer Erika Wennerstrom's yearning vocals and the rolling piano figures that open the album echo the cover. It's sensitive, full of feeling. Beware: It bursts open, with a wall of lean and loud guitar, bass, and drums - and Wennerstrom's room-filling mid-range vocals, blasting full-throatedly as she sings "Things are coming into focus!" The Cincinnati trio's 2005 debut, Stairs and Elevators, highlighted their blues roots, and All This Time takes those blues and folds them into a brawny rock pastry. Wennerstrom's voice is huge, an instant ear magnet that no one misses, a PJ Harvey from the heartland playing bold, large-stroke guitar. At once, the Bastards are bottom-heavy and beautifully melodic, taking flight--or at least harnessing the power of that album-cover dragonfly. --Andrew Bartlett

I recently purchased this cd, and I love it. She has a great singing voice, and the music rocks! If you get the chance, go see them live. Simply amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Just buy this right now .......2007-05-16

I was honestly a bit put off by the cover art -- I imagined something like the Indigo Girls. In fact, this is bottom-heavy old-school rock and roll, with a slight country/blues twist, great powerhouse female lead vocals, great songwriting, great performances. It sounds really comfortable and familiar, but at the same time it's hard to think of an exact parallel -- if Lucinda Williams recorded a rock record, it might sound like this. Altogether a really captivating and satisfying rock album. This would have been a monstrous FM radio album back in the day. Into the Open, Brazen, Blue Day, and Valley of Debris are all awesome songs. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Tough teen wisdom.......2007-04-19

Recorded in Cincinnati!

Main brain Erika Wennerstrom performs open-heart surgery with a corroded six-string, blasting melodic knots of exuberance and experience. The low-fi grunge sound gets old after a while, though; how 'bout some separation between the instruments and, heavens, tweak the treble on the vocals? Choice cut: "All The Time" - Pretenders riff, Fiona Apple chords. Throughout the (short) set, Wennerstrom sings her guts out but never puts out, or grandstands. "Come A Long Way," the moody closer deserves a Cranberries'-sized budget.

Promising!

Now, try the next one in Cleveland!

3 out of 5 stars Some sophomore jinx at play here.......2007-01-04

Not as strong as the first CD. Not as bluesy. For some reason, the record engineering seems sub-par as well.

5 out of 5 stars Energy and Simple Sophistication.......2006-11-06

While I'm sure there is a long and rich history which the Heartless [...] draw on and into which they fit - I know none of it. What I do know is that this album is truly amazing.

There is a necessary simplicity to a band's music when it only contains three members, but the Heartless [...] manage to be both energetic and sophisticated; there's definitely more going on than you'll find after just a casual listen.

With only 10 tracks, there isn't a single bit of filler. Wennerstrom's vocals are really amazing too. I highly recommend giving these guys a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Quite Happy with it, and he is a funny Sum'Bitch!.......2007-02-08

Why he is not on the Blue Collar tour I don't know, maybe because he's too busy with his own schedule. If you like the old Good Ol' Boys from the BC tour, you'll find Rodney to fit right in, and maybe even Blue'r!!

Like a good bowl of 5 Alarm Chili and a cold one....

5 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud.......2005-09-24

This is the first Rodney CD I owned and if it isn't his best, it is a close second (to "Hanging With Rodney" his first CD). Great to listen to on road trips or anytime you are in the mood to really laugh. This is the same guy on the TV show "Rodney" where you can see some of his tamer material on network TV. One of the best comedy CDs ever.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best, but still good........2001-12-20

Unlike his first CD, which was great, this one seems rushed. The material wasn't quite complete. Still though a good effort, and a good listen.

5 out of 5 stars Great punk music by a great artist!.......2006-12-22

As a big fan of Rancid, I was excited to see this side-project CD from Lars, and I wasn't disappointed. Either when writing books or song lyrics, it's usually a good idea to focus on what you know best, so what better subject to choose than your own life, which is exactly what Lars does. I find myself listening to this CD over and over and I never get tired of it. It's punk, it's loud and rough, but unlike some punk bands with less talent, you can understand Lars' words and the music is exceptional. Together with a cup of coffee, it provides a great early-morning jolt. Songs like Skunx and Vietnam sound better every time I hear them. And after seeing the Bastards at the Avalon in Boston and meeting Lars several times, I am confident that this will forever remain one of my top-10 favorite CDs. Listen to it 4 or 5 times, and chances are, you'll be hooked too. Oh, I should also mention that the Bastards' second CD, Viking, is also outstanding.

4 out of 5 stars It sounds like LARS, NOT like RANCID.......2006-07-02

If you love the ska-punk sound of RANCID and are not into heavier styles of punk, then this albumn is likely not for you.

A lot of other people compare this band to RANCID, but the only thing RANCID about it is Lars F's voice. However, if you still want to listen to some good old fashioned no-frills punk rock sung by one of punk's most beloved artists, then you will definitely not be disappointed with this albumn.

4 out of 5 stars Oh what's lar's to do during down time...........2005-12-10

Whats lar's to do during down time with rancid while Tim attends to producing lp's for others and doing side bands with blink members ect....Why produce some albums here and there for some of the bands that Tim has no time for on Hellcat and to keep it real do some for a label that's slowly going alacart BYO. So, finally Lar's set's off to do his first solo side project since being in Rancid. Lar's had been in some bands prior to Rancid most notably Aunti Christ which hailed kinda from Olympia, Washington and thanks to Lars also from Campbell, California. (hence the song Olympia, WA) So, we start this lp with an intro ala Rancid style and it goes straight into a Rancid style song you'd expect to hear written by Lars. So, far good. Than have a song flashing back to Lar's early years with his brother and what not. Step up a bit to the next track "to have to have not" a great song done by Billy Bragg which one can easily figure why it was a no brainer to cover this classic Folk/contempary punk song. Then it goes on mostly sounding like a tribute album to Lar's favorite bands. You'll hear more of that classic rancid "life won't wait" style music with guitar riffs of Black Flag's "rise above" Motorhead "ace of spades" riffs with lyrics that kinda sound like a Motorhead song. And if you just pay attention theres lots of riff's one will easily recognize from big punk songs. So, this album overall isn't really origional considering who wrote the songs and had his mate Tim help produce this album. (both can make good orgional songs when they put their talents to work) But, it turns out alright cause Lar's put's down how he see's the world and gives one a glimpse on his life up to the the new Millinium. And this album still gets good life in my CD player after all these years. Not bad for a first solo album. Be weary of the second lp though....

5 out of 5 stars another Rancid side project.......2005-10-12

This album's really good, it's like Rancid, but without Tim. I still don't see what people have against Indestructable. Oh well

2 out of 5 stars Selfish Lars appeals only to Lars.......2005-09-13

I don't know much about Lars Frederiksen, but he obviously doesn't think much of his band. He knows them a lot better than I do so he may be right, but I'm prepared to give them a chance. This is more of a compilation of other artists than a Lars Frediriksen album. Lars takes his vocal stylings from one popular punk rock band, while his drummer copies another, his guitarists steal from another, etc. I don't know which bands are borrowed from because they all sound the same to me. The man on the cover of this album has a mohawk hair cut which shows he is a big fan of the A-Team and Mr. T. I bought this album expecting to hear something Mr. T would be proud of and maybe some songs about Mr. T, but instead Lars chooses to whine selfishly about his own life. He breaks from this however to sing "Army of Zombies", a song about the SNES game "Zombies Ate My Neighbours". Overall this a decent Rancid album.

A dreadful "Let's Do It" by Joan Jett and Paul Westerberg is the only lame moment on the soundtrack of a flick that's destined to become the Rocky Horror of the '90s. The contemporary A list--Björk, Portishead, Belly, Veruca Salt, Hole and L7--all weigh in with new tracks; Björk's "Army of Me" and Portishead's "Roads" are standouts. "Season with Mockingbird Girl" by a Stone Temples Pilots spinoff called The Mad Bastards adds to the film's considerable hip quotient. --Jeff Bateman

4 out of 5 stars pot of sound variety.......2000-11-29

When I first got this CD after compulsively watching the movie several times over, I have to admit that I was a little bummed that not all of the songs I was expecting to hear were there. Over time it really grew on me and I have been quite please with the CD. I've picked up more of the music of the different bands featured on it. It's a great choice for someone who likes to keep a nice variety of sounds swimming in her ears. It has given me a taste of artists that I wouldn't normally have stumbled upon otherwise. See the movie if you want a fun & funky chick-flick. If it gets you revved you can expect to be dancing, hopping, bobbing & lipsynching to the soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars Another log on the fire.......2006-10-10

These guys are great in a really cool understated way, without beating me over the head with their "unique" sound (see: the White Stripes). Without having to reinvent the wheel they make good rock music that doesn't sound like anybody else, not easy thing to do these days.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar.......2006-03-30

I too have a hard time finding anything about this band, in regards to reviews and whatnot. I stumbled upon them by chance, and I was hooked. The lead singer's voice is one of the greatest female vocals I've ever heard in a rock band (granted, a rather small set), and the songs are amazing. I would compare their rhythm section to Entwistle/Moon at times, and with that amazing voice of hers, this is a stellar old timey rock album. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the White Stripes??.......2006-03-27

Lean and mean, good old rock and roll; Heartless Bastards may be compared to The White Strips...but without the hype and pretension. The lead singers vocals are unique, and real ! A truly tight power trio...no superfluous production values. Fat Possum is one of the great unsung lables.

Black Bastards was voted in Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists as the most notable rap album of all time that was never released commercially, and with good reason. The fact that this excellent album, slated for a 1994 release, has not seen the light of day until 2001 testifies to a time when shortsighted industry backlashes against records that inflamed Middle America were in vogue. Elektra Records higher-ups canned the project due to its controversial cover art, which shows a Sambo figure being lynched. Finally available, this must-purchase concept album is worth the wait. From the jazzy, hypnotic samples on the title cut to "Sweet Premium Wine," a farcical ode to swigging 40-ounce bottles of brew (remember when drinking St. Ides and Old English was trendy?), you know you've found rap heaven. Classic headbanger "What a Niggy Know?" (and the remix featuring partner-in-rhyme MF Grimm) is equally off the chain. "Constipated Monkey" and weed anthem "Suspended Animation" are testaments to a time in rap music when experimental beats and obscure sampling ruled the roost. Black Bastards is where Brand Nubian meets De La Soul at the local bodega, heads wear Muslim kufis for kicks, and "word to the mutha'" actually refers to themes of pan-Africanism, repatriation, and reparations. It's a place where Sambo-ism doesn't sell. --Dalton Higgins

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Only audio quality hindered this release........2006-12-07

MF DOOM is one of my top five emcees, dead or alive, and I own all of his official material; in this long list of LP's, and a variety of aliases, MF DOOM's origins are by far radically different from his current output of music. KMD, which was originally a group with himself(as Zev Love X), his brother Subrock, and Onyx(a solo emcee, not the legendary crew), was a group straight out of hip-hop's golden-age, who released the understated classic, Mr. Hood, in the early nineties. On Mr. Hood, KMD's rhymes were part of an early conscious era of hip-hop, having a style akin to De La Soul. They were playful, but also profound, and tracks like "Peachfuzz" and "Humrush" were funky anthems out of the big apple.

A lot of things happened in the time between their debut and the creation of their sophomore album(which was slated to be released in 1994, but didn't see the light of day for seven years); Onyx left the group, Subroc was killed in an instance of manslaughter, Zev was left to finish the album, and ultimately, Elektra shelved Bl_ck B_st_rds for its controversial cover art.

It was obvious that this was a changing point in Zev's life - one that'd soon drive him into isolation, and depression for more than four years before finally re-emerging under his now famous moniker of MF DOOM. The actual music on this album took on a darker tone, with less playful concepts, and more hardcore ideas. Now, don't get it twisted; KMD aren't spitting any thuggery, or gunplay - no where in DOOM's career has he submitted himself to that - it's just that they're bringing the ruckus in their own way.

Onyx isn't really missed on this release, as both Zev and Subroc were more than ill enough to carry an album by themselves. They also handled the majority of the production, which is quite dope for the time of its release. So, with ill lyrics, and dope beats from perhaps one of the greatest emcees of all time, and a lost soldier who doesn't get nearly the recognition he deserves, what keeps KMD's Bl_ck B_st_rds from reaching classic status? The audio quality. Most bootlegs have better sound quality than this, and it's a shame. If this album would've been mastered better for its offical release, I firmly believe it would be more revered today, but as it stands, this is still an undeniably dope release, that hip-hop heads, and especially fans of DOOM, should check out.

4 out of 5 stars What MF Doom Could Have Been Back In 1994 [4 stars].......2006-05-29

I'm pretty sure most of you know the story behind the album. If not, let me fill you in. KMD consisting of Zev Love X (now known as MF Doom) and his brother Subroc. Somewhere in 1993, Subroc was hit by a car and died on impact, leaving Zev Love X to finish the album by himself. When the album was done in 1994, Electra Records shelved the album because of its lyrics and the cover art showing a sambo character being hung. Electra would soon cut KMD from their roster, leaving Zev in obscurity. But the album officially sees the light of day in 2000, when MF Doom released it independently.

One thing I have to commend is the great movie samples that are on this CD. Starting with the intro "Garbage Day #3" which is made up of them. "Sweet Prenium Wine" is a song about knocking back a few drinks while the samples play as the hook. Most of the songs here on this CD are about smoking, as heard on the song "Smoking That S**t" which features vocals from Earthquake, Lord Sear, and Kurious. "Contact Blitt" (could be titled "Contact Blitz" or "Contact Blunt") is a song about Zev ride a bus to Los Angles with an arrogant bus driver, while smoking. "F Wit Ya Head" featuring vocals from H20 and CMOB and the song "Suspended Animation" are more songs dedicated to weed, all more to offend the higher-ups of Electra Records. One great track is "What A Niggy Know" (could be titled "What A Nigga Know") is Zev and Subroc comming correct with a serious attitude that will make your head nod. The 12 inch single was the only item released by Electra Records, but since the album was shelved, the single was pulled also. MF Grimm would drop in to help Zev do the remix. Subroc would get in a few solos also. He shows he had the lyrics on the song "Gimmie" (could be titled "Give It Here") as he says "Give me a choo choo train for my badass tracks..." He would also do his thing on the song "It Sounded Like A Roc."

One thing I have to knock is what many people have been saying in other reviews, the sound quality. Some songs sound like they have been worn out over the years so it sounds like a bootleg of a bootleg, making the vocals sound like they're held back by a sound barrier. A great example is the Zev Love X anger expressed song "Get-U-Now" and "Smoking That Sh**". Also I'm sure some of this album was recorded off a record. How did I come to this conclusion? The song "Plumskinzz" is exactly what I'm saying. The song has a nice piano sound and is going good as Zev spits his verse. As soon as it gets halfway through the hook, it sounds like the vocals were taken away and the beat freezes up. Then all of a sudden you hear MF Dooms [recent] voice come in and say "Loose Hoe God&Cupid" or as many listeners have interpeted "You're so GODDAMN stupid!" I don't EVER want to hear that again! Obviously he used a 12" single and someone hit the needle causing it to skip loudly to the instramental. The song would resume later on in the CD when a woman would come in and say "Oh Now I Don't Believe It!" as Subroc would continue his verse. Whats ironic about this whole song is that this song was recorded in 1991, and a former KMD member named Onyx the Birthstone Kid (many people who are familiar with late MF Doom albums know him as Rodan) had a verse on that song between Zev's and Subroc's (and believe it or not, Onyx had the best verse out of the three). So there is no actual musical vibe because those interludes causes a big chunk of the song to be missing. (How about recording the song correctly Mr. Dumille?) If you want to hear the uncut clear version of it, just find a "Nitty Gritty" 12 inch single because its the flipside of that, or you can locate a 1994 bootleg of the album.

Overall I'm happy that this album was finally released, since it was one of the biggest albums in 1994 that was shelved. But the way that this album was put together soundwise, that title could have been easily taken away. I recommed this album to those who want to hear more examples of Doom's early 90's production, the way MF Doom sounded in 1993/1994, or just curious of the lost album. Otherwise, you're better off buying "The Best Of KMD Album" which is a combination of this and the Mr. Hood album, or wait until Mr. Dumille decides to remaster the album and reissue it.

Rest In Peace Subroc

Standout tracks: What A Niggy Know, Sweet Prenium Wine, Contact Blitt, What A Niggy Know (remix), Smoking That Sh** (Plumskinzz would have been a standout if it were a full song)

If it makes anyone feel better, the excessive dropping of artists and lack of record sales would have cause Electra to go out of business and be bought out by Atlantic Records.

5 out of 5 stars A classic that almost wasn't.......2006-05-12

If you know MF Doom, you probably know the history of this album. KMD was the original group consisting of Subrock, Zev luv-X (Doom) & Onyx. Onyx left and then while working on this LP Doom's brother Subrock was killed in a car accident. As the LP was finished Elektra shelved the album and dropped Doom due to the controversial cover art, (a sambo hanging from a gallows.)

Years later some of the rough cuts of the LP emerged on the Fondel Em' label as the "Black Bastard's: Roughs & Rares EP" giving a small hint to what greatness the album could have been. A few years later under Doom's own Metal Face Records "Black Bastards" finally saw the light of day.

The album is bittersweet; because you can't help but wonder what would have happened if it would have been released in 94. But given Doom's current fever pitch, it's no matter.

The only problem with the LP is the sound quality. It apears as if Doom had the masters on tape and wore them out, due to the distortions in several tracks.

DON'T LET THAT DISTRACT YOU. This album is amazing and worth every penny, but it is rare and tharefore hard to find. If you can't afford it, then I'd suggest "The best of KMD," it's the best 1/2's of both "Mr. Hood" & "Black Bastards."

4 out of 5 stars interesting album by kmd.......2006-01-28

this album is a good album to tell you the truth it was kind of hard to listen to because of the weird production, but somtimes weird is actually good it grew on me.if u wanna know how mf doom started and sound like that then pick this album and also for fans of mf doom, this is their second album not their first.standout tracks are Get-U-Now,What A Nigga Know?,Contact Blitt,F*@# Wit' Ya Head!!,and What A Nigga Know? This is MF DOOM'S best work by far. Every track on this album is amazing, if you haven't already got this album this should be first on your list. It is arguably one of the best Hip-hop albums to ever come out. Buy this album or burn it, it won't dissapoint you once.

2 out of 5 stars What happened Lars?.......2007-05-26

Lars' side project appeals to me because it songs pretty much exactly like Rancid, and their first CD was pretty awesome, a solid punk album for all fans of Rancid. They were a safe haven from the transplants stuff and Skinhead Rob's rap. This record is not bad, in fact the music is actually really good and some of the tracks are legendary (1% and Skins, Punx, and DrunX).

There is one problem, and it's BIG!

The lyrics drive this album right into the ground. After the fifth or sixth song about prostitutes and how we're gonna screw them and then kill them, you're about ready to put this CD away for a long while. I agree with the guy who said that the album booklet was completely unneccessary, and even Tim Armstrong couldn't pull "My Life to Live" out of the fire.

This is just mediocre, bottom line. I know punk lyrics are nothing deep, but c'mon guys, spend more than half of five minutes and write something at least decent.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-08-15

8.5 STARS OUT OF 10

I'm a huge Rancid fan. As you can imagine, I was pretty excited about a second Lars album coming out. Lar's first album surprised me in how good it was, and I was expecting more of the same with Viking.

When I first cracked it open, I didn't care for it. It seemed all over the place. The first and last few songs had a Rancid 2000 feel to it. Throw in a couple of covers, a ballad, a few mainstream punk sounding songs and you had Viking. It wound up in my CD case after about a week.

A few months later, I decided to pop it back out, and I can say the album really grew on me. It's sometimes hard, sometimes soft, but always catchy. As usual, Tim Armstrong is all over the album with his lyrics and even a guest appearence.

Much better then 99% of the junk out these days.

4 out of 5 stars great album!.......2006-07-23

sure, the lyrics are chock full of tough guy thug-esque lyrics, but you are all missing the point. lars is an admitted sex-aholic as well as a drinker and smoker..and probally gets/got into his share of fights as well. yes, lars' first album is definately better, but that one was made to be a little bio of lars' life. this one is a fun album chock full of hard hitting punk rock. the lyrics sheet could have been uncensored though. that would have been more hardcore. the album contains some great covers, appearances by skinhead rob and tim armstrong, short fast songs, and a closing track that will make you want to laugh, but you will feel bad because lars is pouring himself out to you.

for rancid fans, this is a must...if you are just a casual rancid fanand/or just like the pre self titled 2000 stuff, steer clear would be the best advice.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing considering these guys write the Rancid albums too.......2006-06-26

I really liked the first record these guys put out. It was somewhat similar to Rancid with big melodies and sing alongs but had a dirtier street punk style with the punk equivalent of thug life rap lyrics. On this second effort the formula is left largely intact but for some reason this release lacks any truly standout songs like the several that graced their first record. While the songs are played with energy and are somewhat faster and meaner than their first effort, they lack any distinguishing characteristics to set them apart from each other or the myriad bands playing this style.

This is pretty disappointing as this is essentially the same songwriting team as Rancid. There's no reason these guys should be writing material as generic as this or even letting arguably boring songs like "Mainlining Murder", "Switchblade" and "The Kids Are Quiet On Sharmon Palms" be released to the public. Ironically one of the better cuts on the album, the short but sweet "Little Rude Girl" sounds more like a Rancid outtake, with proper backing vocals and melodies, than a song belonging on this record. This fact just serves to underline the point that maybe Lars is better sticking with his main band from here on out.

There are a few variances here worth noting, mainly the salty pirate jig duet with fellow Rancid band mate Tim Armstrong "My Life To Live" and the closer "The Viking". "My Life To Live" has a mandolin vibe running under a tale of pillaging hookers coast to coast complete with dozens of callouts to all their favorite ladies of the night. It's pretty catchy but maybe unduly so given the lack of quality material surrounding it. "The Viking" is basically a straight blues ballad accompanied by mournful strings that could have been a disaster given it's five minute running time but with Lars' gruff vocals and love 'em and leave 'em lyrics it doesn't come across as cheesy at all.

I have to say that this album is a bit of a disappointment. The first record is a great record and one I still find myself playing quite a bit but this one, while energetic and well played, is just too formulaic to really grab your attention. I'm sure die hard Rancid fans will still find things to like here as I have but this is certainly not essential.

5 out of 5 stars Classic in the making.......2006-04-06

I have read quite a few reviews and felt the need to say my piece after reading a review from someone who had just flicked through the booklet and review the CD from that without actually listening to it(???).
I've been into Rancid since the first album and to be honest, I haven't liked an album since "And out come the wolves" I've seen em live and they do kick severe arse. When I first heard about Lars doing a side project I was excited. I had reason to be the first album is amazing. Back to the roots old school Punk. No prisoners or apologies. Seminal, brutal and in your face. When I saw Viking I was, understandably, like a kid on Christmas eve. Upon listening what happened??? I love it. The entire CD kicks you in the face. I love the entire CD like an old friend. Stand out songs are Switchblade, Mainlining Murder, For you and Viking. I've been into punk since it began. I don't like a lot of the new "punk" pop that is taking over at the moment. If you like old school hard punk then listen to this and the first Lars Frederikson and the Bastards CD. You won't be disappointed. Oh and if you get the chance go see em live. Lars is a showman and they kick arse like only punks can!!

Product Description

Sounding like they were recorded in the 1930s on broken equipment in a desolate region of southern Mississippi, Those Poor Bastards evoke the kind of heart-wrenching feelings of misery and loneliness you'd hope to hear on an album called Songs of Desperation. Unrelentingly slow and scratchy, this true old-time Gothic country draws more influence from the likes of Tom Waits and Nick Cave than Johnny Cash. The inky concoction of organ, banjo, and guitar on Songs of Desperation is the background music for themes of sold souls, empty lives, and certain death, but the album is still not without an element of black humour. If you find rockabilly and psychobilly's treatment of the genre too cartoonish and trivial, Those Poor Bastards offers the polar opposite you've been looking for. Rue Morgue Magazine

5 out of 5 stars What's it all about?.......2007-05-22

You might as well ask and the answer is hidden inside your inner depths, depths you didn't even know that you had.

A friend of mine made me a copy of this CD and I listened to it for a laugh. Was it funny? Yes, in a twisted sort of way. Was it vacuous? Hell, No. It was profound all the way. Was it meaningless? Yes, as meaningless as life itself.

People ramble through their lives trying to give it a `meaning' by banishing sadness and accentuating happiness and in the process are alienated of most of their own lives.

It is all life, in its pain, desperation, sadness, joy, ugliness, beauty, darkness and light, embrace it and be grateful for it is all what you have.

If you want to get off the banal sunshine train, then listen to those poor [...] telling you how.

At any rate, I liked it enough to buy my own copy.

5 out of 5 stars 1930's death country.......2007-04-12

If you're looking for a slick, overproduced recording then you're missing the whole point. These songs are meant to reclaim the true country roots of the 1930's style murder ballads and weepers. Just read the product review and you'll get a good sense of what this album sounds like. You need not be "duped" or "burned." Just listen to the clips. This isn't music meant for the radio or to make you feel good. It's true country that evokes an overwhelming sense of loneliness and misery.

1 out of 5 stars Bad News.......2007-04-12

This is one bad piece of work - I felt duped by the first review and then felt burned the first time I attempted to listen to this poorly created, poorly recorded CD. Stay away! These guys have nothing to say....

5 out of 5 stars Lonesome and the Minister are at it again.......2006-09-13

This album is an instant Hellbilly classic. Lonesome has no patience for BS and howls his damnation for the unbelievers of gothic country. Not since Johnny Cash has there been a country music personality with the magnetism to change the industry. Stand out tracks include "Hell So Near" "Shadows Fall" "Drunk with Fear" "My Last Dollar" and the somnambulistic masterpiece "Drown in the River." Lonesome evokes bleak faulknerian tragedies with a vicious sense of humor. I highly recommend Those Poor [..] to all discontented Nick Cave fans.

Product Description

Hellfire Hymns is a masterpiece of infernal atmosphere. The production creaks like a gallows pole, and the songs don't seem ancient as much as they seem otherworldly, crafted by damned souls on Hell's plain. These songs speak of bloody redemption, of what befalls those who stray from the straight and narrow. As sanctified as the songs seem, you get the idea that Lonesome Wyatt and The Minister don't speak from a high horse, but from personal experience of the tribulations of the damned. Let the death country revolution descend. - Owl and Bear

5 out of 5 stars Why did I buy it?.......2007-05-22

For the poetic images it inspires and for the fact that they list Black Flag, and Blind Willie Johnson as influences on their 'myspace' page. To put those two in the same sentence is an act of genius by itself, but to have them as influences is certifiably inspirational: you have to be either mad or very perceptive, probably both.

Hellfire Hymns is full of little nuggets of poetry, you have to listen carefully or read the lyrics while listening to feel your own emotional being resonate. Lines like: `Everyone turns so cold hearted, when they get holy' and `I've gotta ruin my life on my own' are not much by themselves: it is the way Those Poor [..]sing them that says it all.
