5 out of 5 stars Eclectic from Oregon, a death metal classic!.......2005-06-02

The album (I had it on vinyl) opens with a Hellraiseresque sample: "I have come to believe that we are living in a great void, I've lost my faith." Well, this is an album to restore your faith in death metal (especially if you yearn for something a little more dimensional than, say Suffocation or Krisiun). The aural assault begins with "Absolute Worship," a track with growling vocals and rhythms that range from double-bass attack to slow-mosh breakdowns to grinding moments to thrashing moments to slow (almost doom-like) reflections. Lance Thill's death growls are complemented well by Terry Geil's (whose growls sometimes almost sound like hardcore). The production is reminiscent of early black metal: shallow, with moments of grandeur. Although this release is on a label named Grind Core, Victims of Internal Decay display few elements of grind, although some tracks (like "In Extremis") include segments that seem like grind tracks (a la Nasum or Spazz) inserted to create tension between the slower portions. The battling vocalists present grind familiarity. This would probably be considered a "death metal" release, but V.O.I.D. were putting out music as early as 1999 (_Democrazy_), so they present innovative death metal. All of the tracks cover many ranges of tempo and rhythm. I find their minimal usage of acoustic guitar to be especially effective. These Oregon boys were influenced by Voivod (see logo on cover of one of their demos: _Dead Fish White_) and there are many moments where the music sounds like death metal Voivod, with hints of other bands: Celtic Frost, Napalm Death (the opening to "False Hate" could be growled by Barney himself), Green River, Black Flag, and Afghan Whigs. The disc includes one of my favorite tracks of all-time: "One More Stitch." "One More Stitch" is a cover of a track by the phenomenal band Green River. The original Green River track is haunting, by the V.O.I.D. version is terrifying. "One More Stitch" is easily one of my top fifty favorite tracks of all time. Two of my bands (Noisome Corpse and Skeletons of Society) used to cover this track live, and it always received phenomenal crowd response, and I would almost induce vomit as I would growl the lyrics. The album is worth the purchase for that track alone. The lyrics are pretty cerebral (especially for death metal). Also, the album was produced by Drew Canulette (Soundgarden, Black Flag, Nirvana, Neil Young). This is a forgotten gem. Relieve the glory of early 90s underground metal!
