So much fun!.......2007-06-13
This is still such a classic and so much fun!
BYE BYE BIRDIE.......2007-03-03
I always enjoyed the film version of "Birdie" as well as the soundtrack and now this reissue includes "The Sultans Ballet" where Janet Leigh bites off more than she can chew when she invites a group of Sultans(Shriners) to dance. There are a couple of minor inclusions including "We Love You Conrad" and the rehearsal of "One Last Kiss" My only question is why didnt they use the complete version of "A Lot of Livin To Do" Even with the additional tracks the CD clocks in at 46 minutes so space wasn't a problem. It's quite understandable why the Russian Ballet was not included since it would be out of place on an otherwise perky and bright score.
While "Bye Bye Birdie" may not be one of the best scores it is zesty and cheerful to listen to on a gloomy day and as one of the numbers suggests it helps you to "Put On A Happy Face"
Bye Bye Birdie soundtrack.......2006-07-01
The product itself is excellent, but: 1) it took about three weeks to arrive; and 2) we didn't realize the film cut out and added so music. What we needed was a soundtrack for the stage production.
Love the movie...but the soundtrack?.......2006-05-04
I am a huge fan of the movie and the soundtrack is also amazing...the only thing I'm uspet about is that "One Last Kiss" on the cd is TOTALLY different!
Bye Bye Birdie was a good Buy Buy.......2005-08-02
Solid cast recording brings back the light-hearted msuicals of the 50s and 60s. Used as the primer for an upcoming stage version of the show, we listened frequently, and haven't tired yet.

the private show .......2007-07-30
this set list was pretty good u can hear the doors practice and rehears there songs if u are a fan of the doors this is reallly good to have
Take this for what it is..........2006-12-01
This 2-disc live performance is nothing more than the Doors during a rehearsal for the Aquarius Theatre (Hollywood, 1969). Without a doubt, this release is strictly FOR DIEHARD FANS ONLY. Having said that, the Doors put forth an electric performance of "Gloria" on Disc One. This version is one of the BEST ever recorded by the band! It completely smokes other live versions released in the past! You also get the benefit of some beautifully improvised vulgarities, which add to this version's jacked-up mojo!!
In addition, "I Will Never Be Untrue" is a live tune that never appeared on a studio release - it is a slow, bluesy number that is well-suited to Morrison's voice. "Build Me A Woman," another non-studio song, is, once again, pumped up with even more vulgarities - it has the feel of a band having fun while rehearsing, which is precisely the terrain this live release covers. It is NOT for the casual fan...Take it for what it is...
Loose Jam Session.......2006-05-22
I am not sure if the previous reviewer was looking for a greatest hits type cd. This live session is for REAL fans only. They don't play a single hit. It was recorded the day after the other two Aquarius shows (with no audience). The band sounds loose and is in a good mood. It is Jim that definitely does not want to be there. He really just says what he feels and sticks it to the record company that is paying for this session (there is a track called "there are 1000's of dollars riding on this day"). It is very funny and I just love it. Again, they don't play any of their hits... so if that is what you are looking for look elsewhere. If you are a die-hard fan looking for a unique recording of one of your favorite bands, buy this cd. Very good sound quality as well.
The Doors Don't deliver.......2006-05-17
Sadly, this rather expensive 2 CD set is a severe disappointment. It is more of an instrument tune-up session rather than a work of musical substance. Don't waste your money on this one !! If it were possible to give less than zero stars this one deserves a negative 5 ....
Just serious fans only please.......2005-08-13
This is not for the casual fan, this is only for those of us who already own all official albums and more than a couple live bootlegs. This is the Doors, preety much rehearsing and a little bored at times, specially Jim. Is it tight? No. Does it rock? On a few moments it does. Am I happy I bought this? Yes; it is another missing link in discovering one of the greatest bands of all time, and one of the greatest talents in rock: jim morrison. I deducted one star, because it is a little pricey, and being now out of print, most likely will only continue to increase in price.

essence of Fellini..........2007-05-09
As evocative as any perfume, this CD brings forth clear images of the films for which this music was written. Makes a charming background for any party, seemingly brainless fun, yet sophisticated and delightful. Also good to cook to...
Excellent!.......2007-04-22
For this release, Silva Screen released their previous disc of Music from Fellini films, along with the best tracks from Nic Raine's 1998 recording of the complete score of Romeo and Juliet, as well as Paul Bateman's 2001 Godfather Trilogy disc, along with a few new tracks and other tracks from Silva's back catalog of music.
The last two tracks of the first disc, and the entire second disc is devoted to Fellini Films. All of the Fellini tracks are from 1993's "Music From Fellini Films", with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic (then credited as the Czech Symphony), with the exception of "Toby Dammit" which was recorded for this disc with Mario Klemens conducting.
"The Taming of the Shrew" is from Silva Screen's successful 2001 "Shakespeare at the Movies" set, while Death On The Nile and the Glass Mountain have been newly recorded for this set.
In conclusion, if you had the first disc of Rota/Fellini music then perhaps this would not be worth it, but overall this is a superb collection with that previous release in its entirety (remastered in HDCD surround sound, I might add), along with the best tracks from the Godfather Trilogy and Romeo and Juliet, with some more films sprinkled about, its a must-have, for anyone who wants a taste of Rota for less than $25.
"premier composer of Italy (1911-1979) ~ Nino Rota".......2003-08-26
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performs the gems by composer Nino Rota, conducted by Derek Wadsworth, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mario Klemens. This latest release "The Essential Nino Rota Film Music Collection", has all the romantic and poetic scores ever conceived. Rota's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbiding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days.
Rota has the ability to capture the moments from each cue in his scores with "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW", "THE GLASS MOUNTAIN", "LA DOLCE VITA" and "ROMEO & JULIET, the tapestry is fine and the weave is just right. That's just for starters, listen and recall the score from "THE GODFATHER" and "THE GODFATHER II", one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen, the music from Rota was a large part of this. And Disc Two with "THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA", "AMARCORD" and "LA STRADA", can sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail.
Silva Screen Records and James Fitzpatrick (producer), please stand up and take a bow for the well deserved rare gems you've given us. This can only be one of the most sought after collections complete in every detail for any "film-score-buff" worth his salt. As you listen to this CD, you can visualize each scene the cue is recalling. And speaking for one and all movie music collectors----this is a keeper!

Customer Reviews:
Fellini + Rota = Magic.......2006-10-31
Orchestrated and conducted by Derek Wadsworth and performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the scores on the CD "Fellini Rota: Music from the Classic Films of Federico Fellini" are marvelous and unforgettable and I am never tired of listening to them. The CD is one of the favorites in my collection.
Rota's melodies have everything in them: Italy's shining sun, her blue sky, the sound of her sea. They've got ancient wisdom of Rome and eternal innocence of a child. They are in Cabiria's smile, Gradisca's walk, Anita's fountain, Juliet's quiet loneliness, it the songs of Gelsomina's trumpet, in La Saraghina's lurid dance on the beach. Rota filled his tunes with beauty, poetry, romance, longing, regrets and dreams that may never come true but they are beautiful dreams anyway. Sweet and melodical, gentle and rhythmical, kind and lovely, they keep playing after the films are over, all characters disappear from the screen and what is left behind is "a little orchestra of Hope with Love as its conductor". The last that we hear in is the magic music of Rota, bringing affirmation, hope and love.

Louis Hardin, known to pre-Watergate New Yorkers as the blind street musician Moondog, is also a fascinating and sui generis composer. This disc collects 1969 recordings of his orchestral works and 1972 small-group recordings of the two-minutes-and-under "rounds and canons" that are his most influential work. Janis Joplin covered his "All Is Loneliness," you can hear foreshadowings of Stereolab in his "Madrigals," and you only need to hear "Theme" to hear how profoundly he influenced Michael Nyman. Simple and beautiful, Moondog's rounds owe as much to the swing he heard on the radio in his youth as to Bach's canonical structures, and they vary as little and as much as roses in a row. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Admirable communion with life.......2007-04-26
Blind he is our Moondog, but he does not bark for pity. He listens to and reproduces what he can capture with his ears. That means his work is a tremendous compilation of sounds from the real world, animals or just insects, his own baby and his own wife, or just some beating on a drum, or the frail dancing of a pipe along with a frog and a cricket. It is this extreme patchwork of sounds, voices, noise and music under the light enchantment from the moon that our artist is imagining in his eternal night. At least for him the moon never sets, never disappears over or behind the hills. "Surf Session" is the only piece that has some real length. The sea surf, the sea waves, the breaking of these waves we imagine along some pebbly seaside give a strange depth to the very both Asian and tremendously romantic music that manages to float forever over the rather powerful vortex of the sea, the ocean. The nearly Chinese constant grace-notes give the music a charm that is both discrete and so strong we seem to be able to imagine some Last Emperor advancing in the Forbidden City just before defeating his beleaguered wife and sons under the sign of some golden flower. The "Street Scene" is less fascinating because it is aimless, it lacks a direction and a destination? "I must never follow you and you must never follow me." He is roaming on and on, around and around, in that incessant, menacing, mechanical noise that comes up from the New York street locked up in between the walls of surrounding buildings. Can that be life? And what can it sound like to a blind man? Is it worse or less violent than what the famous Arthur Miller's Salesman felt, heard and experienced in his trapped two storied house in the middle of surrounding skyscrapers and under the crushing noise of thousands of motor vehicles? We will never know, except if we decide to do what dipus did when he realized his criminal inability to see the fate that was his. And he lived ever after like a dog in the eternal night of his blindness remembering the moonshine and the sunshine, tolerating the insults and petty assaults from those whose yes are not bleeding dead.
Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, University Paris Dauphine & University Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne
F_kin' Hardcore.......2005-12-06
Louis T. Hardin did not graduate from the Juliard. He went to a school in Iowa and Memphis, but was mostly self taught. Listen to this with your eyes closed.
Eccentric Centrist.......2003-12-14
Odd-ball individuals are more common than geniuses, but Moondog is both. Harry Partch had the highest regard for this blind graduate of Julliard, whose fantastic get-up of skins, furs and horns might have detracted from the impact of less seminal music. Since he was immensely tall, he made quite an apparition. Moondog's primitivo get-up was odd, to say the least, but since Moondog was blind, one wonders who put the costume together. Moondog, like Harry, invented most of the instruments he played standing on the corener at the Avenue of the Americas. His music reaches back into prehistory in its effect, and has a kindness to it, if that may be a reasonable thing to say. Later, Moondog became sort of a darling of the avant garde, and composed for traditional instruments, but the earlier the recorded work, the more deep down and pure it was. The later work is slicker, but just as intelligent.

A very poor recording of the Yankee Doodle Dandy soundtrack. Sounds as if the person making the recording put a single microphone up against speakers while he or she was playing the video at home.

Album Description
This is a new recording of selections from the Tony Award winning musical La Cage aux Folles. The show won nine Tony Awards in 1984, including Best Musical and Best Score. This album features two versions of each song: tracks 1-10 contain the background music and guide vocals, tracks 11-20 contain the accompaniment music alone.
As a CD+G album, lyrics will appear on-screen when this album is played on a karaoke machine. The lyrics have also been reprinted in a booklet enclosed in the jewel case, for use when the album is played on a traditional CD player. All songs are in the original show key, and show tempo.

La Cage aux Folles.......2005-08-10
I am hosting a musical La Cage aux Folles night where my guests are invited to perform a song. This karaoke CD is perfect for my purpose - ten great songs followed by the same ten in music only.
The BEST of Karaoke Times!!.......2005-02-26
This is without a doubt the best karaoke version of a Broadway show I've ever heard!
I've purchased or listened to dozens of these types of CDs. The background tracks only versions are not interesting. My friends and I enjoy the Stage Stars recordings because their selections are more complete and the actors they use (while sometimes uneven) are terrific. And this is absolutely the best cast of actors and best choral work on any karaoke CD I've heard. The chorus sounds full and rich and the harmonies are GREAT. The tempos are perfect - just like the original cast, so very easy to sing along with. And the orchestrations are very good, if still a little too synthesized and overpowering. The leads are all wonderful! In particular, I'm a big fan of Miles Phillips. His solos as Georges are literally BETTER than either Broadway production and better than any recording I've ever heard (and I've heard em all)! It's worth buying this CD just to hear him sing Song On The Sand and Look Over There. The entire CD is worth just sitting back and listening to for pleasure. The fact that you get a second set of tracks to sing/rehearse/entertain with is almost a bonus! Great job, Stage Stars! Keep the quality coming!!

Infectious!.......2004-01-29
If only the French could play like this! Celibidache steps out of his awe inspiring Brucknerian habitat to conduct these wonderful ephemeral works. And the results are truly spellbinding.
Beautiful!.......2004-01-28
As always, Celibidache weaves a splendid and translucent tapestry of sound with these works. You will have to re-think your idea of most of these familiar pieces. A definite must buy.

SACD set, worth the price?.......2007-06-25
.....maybe.
SACD layer sounds better than CD layer; more spatial information, tighter bass and sweeter strings.
You will experience more sonic improvements, if you own audiophile High-End stereo system.
This set is especially suitable for the people who avoided DG Karajan recordings because of overly bright tonal qualities(Karajan glare).
With this set, you can enjoy Karajan/Berlin PO with decent sound (you still hear thin lower-mid range and upper-mid range harshness
with screechy first violin though).
Is his interpretation of Beethoven's music as profound and convincing as Furtwangler's?
My suggestion to you:
If you want to listen to the best Beethoven cycle, do yourself a favor,
Obtain the 9 symphonies by Furtwangler.
Teeing off on this Pastoral.......2006-11-14
Ever since this superb set was released more than forty years ago, there's been agreement even among its most fervent supporters that the Pastoral is, as Mark Twain might have said, a good walk spoiled. I beg to differ. Beethoven was no duffer. As many contemporaries noted, he strode out to the countryside at a brisk pace. And, I believe, once he got there, Beethoven did not seek to depict repose or bucolic bumptiousness or even metaphysical thanksgiving. Karajan -- sounding better than ever in this remastering -- seems to be telling us that Beethoven was alive to the shimmering, pulsating, unified vitality of nature. It's been written that Karajan did not like the Sixth Symphony. I have found no statement anywhere to that effect by this nature-loving conductor himself, and certainly no evidence of it in this glorious recording.
A famous lightweight set.......2006-10-17
Buyers beware: this is a famous set, originally recorded in 1962 (published in 1963), and it is usually seen as the best of Karajan's three cycles. Now it appears in the SACD format. But it must be noted that this is a pedantic conductor's clinical Beethoven, lacking the gravity of, say, the Klemperer or Furtwängler breathtaking performances. In my view, this is to misunderstand the revolutionary power that these works actually have (i.e., as scores). Nonetheless, BPO sounds great, even if Karajan prevents the brass and timpani from playing as they should (they are often nearly inaudible). For example, check the final pages of the ninth symphony, where it sounds as if Karajan's orchestra just has flutes and strings, almost nothing else - despite the forte markings for trombones.
Standouts, nonetheless, are the third, fifth, and ninth symphonies, which boast excellent playing from BPO. But Karajan's accounts are miles away from the powerful and unforgettably moving interpretations we have from Furtwängler (M & A), Klemperer (EMI), Toscanini (RCA), Böhm (DG, three separate twofers), and - more recently - Abbado (DG). So if you look for the real Beethoven symphony experience: look elsewhere!
Sound is clear but not outstanding - and no SACD incarnation in the world will improve Karajan's lack of understanding.
Best Beethoven boxed set.......2006-10-01
I owned a copy of the '63 recordings when it was originally released on CD and though I enjoyed it, its sonics were lacking. The Super Audio re-mastering for this release is nothing short of spectacular. The music has warmth and a deep sound stage on all discs, which make this set a real pleasure to listen to repeatedly. Even if you don't own an SACD player, these recordings sound superb on a conventional CD player as well. From an artistic point, the presentation of the music has a continuity to it, which runs through the entire set, as well as a having a strong orchestral performance. Karajan and the BPO share a common vision of the music in these recordings and it comes through on most every disc.
Symphony No.1: Overall, Karajan balances the strings and woodwinds in this symphony, very well. The woodwinds soften the edge that the strings provide, giving this early symphony, modeled after Haydn and Mozart, a Beethovenian sound.
Symphony No.2: Here Karajan's touch give this symphony a quick light feeling to the music by maintaining a lively, but by no means rushed tempo, giving the details in the music a chance to emerge. The second and third movements especially benefit from Karajan's treatment of the music.
Symphony No.3: Orchestral playing and part playing is quite fine throughout, but where this performance gains it stature is in how it ends each movement- Karajan seems to know where he wants to take the orchestra, to great affect. In particular, the ending of the first, second, and fourth movement add drama, poignancy, and triumph.
Symphony No.4: There is vitality to this performance, only eclipsed by the Karajan's 1977 re-recording. Still, as in the other performances in this set, No.4 shines brightly. The opening movement is particularly compelling, setting the tone for the rest of the symphony, giving way to a sharply performed final movement full of energy and enthusiasm.
Symphony No.5: This is by far the best reading in the entire set. Throughout, notes are played with a bite, a sharp staccato edge, giving the music incredible weight throughout. Karajan and the Berliners expertly soften those edges where appropriate. Karajan dramatically puts fourth the Ying and Yang of this work, and simply is one of the best recordings of this of this symphony available.
Symphony No.6: This is where the set looses some of its magic. Tempos are rushed, with many of the notes played with too much weight and forcefulness. If this is your favorite Beethoven symphony, and you are more used to a languidly paced walk though the country, this is not the performance for you. On the other hand, if you want to experience a violent thunderstorm, there is no other performance to match it for its power and intensity of playing.
Symphony No.7: This performance of the 7th is not my favorite. What is interesting here is that Karajan and the orchestra seems to be going through the motions with this work, when all of the other symphonies are played with such purpose. The first, third and fourth movements comes across fine enough, but the second movement is where Karajan's approach to the music really fails to please. In that movement the Karajan uses too much legato draining the music of its drama and energy.
Symphony No.8: This is a fabulous account of No.8! The Berliners clearly love this work, and the performance is highly polished, giving the listener a balanced insight into the piece. The first movement draws on vigorous playing from the strings, offset agreeably by the woodwinds, in perfect balance. The second movement benefits from a lightness of touch controlled superbly by Karajan throughout the movement.
Symphony No.9: This is possibly one of the best accounts of this symphony put to disc! The music lends itself to turbulence and strife, save for the third movement and the final chorus, but Karajan's approach adds a significant amount of tension to the score, making the finale all the more joyous in its revelry. Quick tempos, accentuate the rhythms in the first movement, painting a musical picture of conflict and doubt that is omnipresent, rather than something lurking in the background, as in other performances. The second movement is given the same quick tempo treatment as the first, to great affect. The driving rhythms, performed at such a fast pace, continue to hammer the listener, never giving you an opportunity to feel relaxed and tension free. The Third movement is a sea of calm, and Karajan does a superb job of controlling the orchestra in a very deliberate performance of this movement. The final movement is where all the energy of the first two movements, and the tranquility of the third, pays off. Karajan's hard-hitting style has created an atmosphere that sets the stage perfectly for the "Ode to Joy" theme and choral finale. The Bass soloist, proclaiming that there will be no strife and discord, vigorously interrupts all the angst, and drama that is threatening the longing for a peaceful resolution, giving way to the strength of the choir. Obviously, this is how Beethoven intended the music to unfold, but Karajan's handling of the music adds to this musical drama, and like the fifth symphony, Karajan understood that ninth is a struggle between darkness and light. He also understood that darkness is relentless and could consume everything, unless an "Ode to Joy" or freedom as some scholars think the ode may refer to, is proclaimed loudly and clearly. The only disappointment to me in this performance is that the choral singing is not the best, but the choir absorbs the energy of the orchestra, making it easy to forgive lack of enunciation.
A classic Beethoven cycle--is the new SACD hybrid worth it?.......2006-02-07
DG has reissued their Karajan 1963 Beethoven cycle many times, and since it has been a front-runner for four decades, no doubt it will be updated any time a new technology appears. I have two later versions, this new SACD hybrid, which I play through a regular CD system, and the last "original image bit processing" that first appeared in DG's complete Beethoven omnibus in the mid-Nineties, now available at mid-price. It was a decided improvement over the first digital remastering, still available as a budget box, which had nasty, edgy sonics.
The question is, how much improvement has SACD brought about? A lot if you have surround sound, of course. Through two-channel CD I think there is much improvment, too, in terms of a rounder, warmer orchestral tone--it's always good to eliminate as much digital glare as possible. I can't tell this new SACD hybrid from a modern recording, but the "original image" remastering was quite good, too. Right now at Amazon the difference in price between the two versions (new or used) is about 20%, so I would go with the SACD. Don't expect miracles, however; there is sitll a bit of glare in the upper ranges at loud volume, and the balance of the original tapes, which pushed brass and percussion to the rear, hasn't changed in two-channel.
