Customer Reviews:
Hawkwind - 'In Your Area' (Griffin Music).......2003-12-08
Since Griffin had come back in business, this was their first new release.A mix of new studio cuts, unreleased tunes and a few old songs performed live.Guest vocalist Capt. Rizz sings sort of a rap number "Hawkwind In Your Area" that is sandwiched between a decent version of "Brainstorm".A new song "Rat Race" is played in the middle of a modern day Hawkwind classic "Love In Space".Two long-lost Bob Calvert gems are here, the fantastic "Aerospace Age Inferno" and "First Landing On Medusa"(actually it's a reworking of "the Awakening").I was decently impressed with most of the new tracks like "Your Fantasy",the tripping "Hippy" and "Luxotica".Founder Dave Brock and new guitarist Jerry Richards both display plenty of good keyboard work on this twelve track effort.Better than their disc that came out just before this title,'Distant Horizon'.Good space rock with last power.Check it out.
How the mighty are fallen.......2003-09-09
What has Dave Brock done since about 1992? The answer - getting quite a number of people with very little talent into Hawkwind, taking them down the route of bad reggae, idiotic and illiterate raps filled with ecological/political cliches etc..this is not an album that will impress the serious Hawkwind fan, who prefers original musicians of quality to today's sad latecomers
Well, this album has two high points, the beautiful instrumentals 'Prairie' and 'Diana Park', but suffers terribly from poor track indexing (some cuts run together -and I don't mean segueing).
Come on Dave - get people of the quality of Simon House back into the group and start making real music again.
Wondrous neighborhood!.......2002-01-13
Some Hawkfans don't rate "In Your Area" too highly, but I'm not one of them. Everything that has made Hawkwind one of the greatest and most innovative rock bands of the past 30 years is present on this superb disc. Great playing, brilliant writing, superb arrangements...as well as maybe the best overall production possible. Get this cd, you won't regret it!
Big Goofy Mess - Not One Of Their Best.......2001-09-11
It starts off with a live version of "Brainstorm" which is pretty good, but just as it gets up a head of steam the whole thing sort of drifts into a...uh...reggae song? And a bad reggae song at that! Which deflates all the impetus they've built up, so even when they try to segue back into "Brainstorm," the energy is lost. "Alchemy," the following track, is better, even if it is basically a rehash of "Hassan I Sabah," but then all of a sudden everything comes crashing to a halt with "Love In Space," which is dreadful, awful, and cheesy; lounge music for the Starship Enterprise. After that nothing really takes off, although I have to give points for the "Rat Race/Aerospace Age Inferno/First Landing On Medusa" medley; it rocks.
But even that is shot down by the silly "I Am The Reptoid," which is followed by the even sillier "The Nazca," with a cosmic female voice announcing New Age platitudes over a mushy synth track. The rest of the CD gradually runs completely out of energy, terminating in "Diana Park," which is dreadful fake-Santana noodling. Even dedicated Hawk fans won't find much to like here, and non-Hawk fans will find it unlistenable. Better luck next time, guys.
MOTT 4.......2001-04-20
As ever original space rockers Hawkwind go where nobody has gone before, not because of any particular enterprise, but perhaps because they don't care if everybody else just thinks they are off their collective rockers. This is a science fiction concept album in support of the oppressed people of the planet earth, does this sound a little pretentious to you, well it is, but I'm sure that the boys have got their collective hearts in the right place. The music starts off with the arrival of the flying saucer to abduct our hero away, to find out why the human race are so bent on self discruction. This of course makes total confusion amongst the aliens, leading us into a wonderous journey through the music of Hawkwind. As the earthling attempts to return to earth without blowing every bodies minds, what a journey it is, after the rejection of all things alien we are whisked into Blue Skin territory where the multiple layers of vocals, synths, keyboards, & wave sequencers, sooth our worried brows before being propelled forward for more adventures, including the hilarity of a song called "Beam Me Up" (surely this is self explanatory), and a meeting with the urban space dustbin man "Sputnik Stan" (well presumably it's a job that somebody will have to do in the future, good tips in space at Christmas I hope) we're finally bought back to a festival where the first band on the stage are Hawkwind, so the album finishes with the first 3 songs of Hawkwinds live set from 1996 leaving you with the final song "Are You Losing Your Mind" which couldn't be more apt, and has brought you full circle. Confused yet? You should be if your not, you've obviously lost the plot and picked it up at the wrong spot. This was a magnificent return to form by Hawkwind, and is the first studio album to feature Ron Tree on vocals and in true Hawkwind fashion he virtual takes over, dominating most of the songs, before being fired by Captain Dave Brock the following year. Oh well such is the life of a Hawklord. Bring back Nik Turner I say. If you want to go into cosmic interstellar overdrive & your never sure whether to wag your tail or your head them this is the album for you. Mott the Dog.
