4 out of 5 stars If you didn't see this coming..........2007-03-17

Then you obviously don't know the Melvins. The Melvins have the tendency to just not care about anything and to have a sense of humor. If you're a long time fan of the Melvins and was totally caught off guard by it then you obviously haven't been paying attention. I mean, this is the same band that started a "fan club" and told fans to send five dollars and they'll give them exactly what they deserve, and then responded by not giving them anything. This is the same band that made Prick. It makes perfect sense that they'd play this live without warning their audience and then releasing it without warning as well. It was a big, elaborate joke that I think is totally hilarious, considering the club locked their doors for the event. That said, even though this was just a huge joke, I do really like this album a lot. I enjoy noise artists such as Merzbow and Masonna and I like industrial acts such as Throbbing Gristle and Skinny Puppy so this album isn't something that I find totally unapproachable. The sound on here reminds me of some of my favorite industrial artists, and it makes sense, considering King Buzzo cites Throbbing Gristle as an influence. This album is definitely harsh and is definitely unique in the Melvins discography. This album features a lot of distorted sound, high end screeches, and sampling. This album sounds something like a combination of the Melvins sludginess, the density of some Skinny Puppy albums, the abstract arrangements of Throbbing Gristle, and maybe a little Merzbow and Lustmord thrown in for good measure. Oh, and the version of Eye Flys on this alum completely tears, and in some ways it's better than the original . It's much noisier than the original and much more agressive. I'd recommend this for fans of Fantomas' Delirivm Cordia, the album Absolutego by Boris, Throbbing Gristle, Merzbow, and the David Scott Stone noise sets the Melvins featured on their last tour with Jello Biafra

5 out of 5 stars Don't care if it's a "joke" or not, I really like it.......2006-10-07

It seems to me that most people on here hate this album and write it off as a bunch of noise; which it is, but it is good noise. I listen to this album quite frequently at work as it provides a nice background to the whiny servers I have to deal with. I am a fan of Fantomas and Lustmord so that might be why I like this. I also really like Prick as well but not as much as this. It takes big balls for any band to play this live and then release it to their unsuspecting fans. I can see how many fans would feel cheated upon their purchase of this masterpiece; I would have too had I not been farily warned by a friend. I wasn't totally convinced after one listen but the more I listened to it the more it grew on me and it gets more airplay than say the Joe Preston solo ep or The Crybaby which are both great in their own right. Plus, after recently re-watching Forbidden Planet, I can't help but think this album is the Melvins' version of that movie's soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Killer.......2005-11-04

It's just freakin great, but probably not for all you "rockers" out there. Noise.

2 out of 5 stars Well I can't say I wasn't warned..........2005-10-23

Seriously?

When I saw Melvins in Detroit with Tomahawk in 2003, they KILLED. After a couple of inadvertent headbutts in the pit and losing the shirt I bought at the show, I decided I had to get every Melvins album!

So after reading a few of the reviews of this album I ordered it from Amazon. I love all the pre-major label Melvins albums, especially Lysol, and they've been one of the few bands to stay interesting and relevant throughout 20+ years.

This album is neither interesting or relevant. Noise for 80% of the duration before a guitar is picked up or a drum heard! I love noise records, but this one's just boring.

It's not all crap though. From the about 35 minute mark on things get mildly interesting, and then we have a nice version of Eye Flys to close the "set". I can take a joke, but somehow I can't help but feel that I'm the punchline.

One star because they're Melvins, and one star for Eye Flys. Melvins have so many albums and almost all of them are gold! Make this the last one you get.

5 out of 5 stars Automatic five star review.......2005-02-06

because it made me feel ill on first listen. This album is a lot like Fantomas' "Delirium Cordia", except sludgier and better. Real Gone. Approach With Caution. Repeat: Real Gone.

4 out of 5 stars This is a different Masterplan.......2004-12-07

For the record, those of you looking for the European metal band with Ark/Helloween/Iron Savior members should know this is a different band, even though it comes up in the same listing.

4 out of 5 stars Dictators meet The Fleshtones.......2004-05-03

God Bless Andy Shernoff for pulling together Keith Streng and Bill Milhizer of The Fleshtones and Paul Johnson of Waxing Poetics for an old-school rock 'n' roll session. Heavy shades of Shernoff's Dictators and The Fleshtones, mixed with flavors of surf, '60s garage and '70s glam. Three of the four contribute tunes, including Shernoff's late-Dictators era, "What's Up With That," Johnson's Ramones-y "You're Mine," and Streng's buzzing surf instrumental "Picketts Charge."

Not surprisingly, these rock 'n' roll old-timers rework some unusual covers, including Peppermint Harris' "I Got Loaded," Lloyd Price's R&B lament "Just Because," and Hank Ballard's answer-song "Annie Had a Baby." The latter provides particularly fertile ground for the band to Rock. This record is fun from end to end. It's too bad Lester Bangs isn't alive to review it in Creem.
