(5 stars) Kiss It Goodbye... creating a blanket of hate so terrifying all-encompassing, it makes extreme noise seem passive.
Product Description
Revelation: 81
Kiss It Goodbye have proven to be greater than the sum of their parts. The elements that make up their music include: hardcore, punk, metal, guitar noise and experimentation in their most intense forms. The lyrics and vocxals produce an unnerving effect as well. Combining frayed emotions with a jagged sense of cynicism for the refined words and a vocal output that is both disturbing and compelling. Their debut album "She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not" was released on Revelation in March of 1997. Touted by critics and cherished by fans, "She Loves Me..." remains catchy enough for those who were once afraid, and still should be. With members including Tim Singer (Deadguy, No Escape), Tom Rusnack (Ambush, Rorschach), Andrew Gormley (Die 116, Rorschach), and Keith Huckins (Rorschach, Deadguy), it's understandable that Kiss It Goodbye .
After successful tours on their own as well as with bands like Unsane and Obituary, Kiss It Goodbye disbanded in September of 1998. Shortly before the breakup, they recorded a 7" for Sub Pop Records with new guitarist Demian Johnston. The record was never released by Sub Pop and subsequently the band decided to release it posthumously on Revelation. Those long sought after three songs have been coupled with the "Target Practice" 7" (originally released on Revelation in October of 1997) for the CD version of "Choke". This five song cd (two song 7") will offer some solace to fans still mourning the loss of KIG and nightmares to others who never witnessed the horror. Kiss them goodbye...

Chesnutt graduates to the majors with a strong fifth album that's a natural progression from Texas Hotel classics like Drunk and Is The Actor Happy. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
His best so far.......2006-03-14
Strange. Vic Chesnutt is appreciated for being original. A little out of the ordinary. Something I for one am attracted to. Than why is it that I like this album the best? It is probably the most polished and commercially correct album of the lot. Still, the songs are so very strong and the quality of the album is so consistent, that this album stands the test of time.
I van recommend this album to anyone considering buying ther first 'Chesnutt'. You won't be disappointed.
Wow.......2001-12-09
For the last couple of years, I had thought that "Is the Actor Happy?" (1995) and "The Salesman and Bernadette" (1998) were my favorite Vic Chesnutt albums. It would perhaps make sense that the album VC made in the interim, "About to Choke" (1996), would be of similar quality. And having listened to it another dozen or so times, which you have to do to fully appreciate this artist, I now will admit that the album may be the best of the bunch. The songs "Degenerate" and "Giant Sands" in particular are probably in the Top 10 VC songs of all time. "Little Vacation" is a load of fun to listen to. I agree with the earlier post about the terms "genius" and "classic" being tossed about too often. But the trilogy of "Actor", "Choke" and "Salesman", taken together, in my mind, redefine those terms.
About to Criticize.......1999-08-22
Big biz meets Vic in this career-so-far summation, which includes (mostly) songs familiar to those who have seen him live in the past 9 yrs. - kind of a greatest-hits-in-an-alternate-universe compilation album . . . Not his best, but has wonderful moments, particularly the Casio-at-home performed "Little Vacation", the simplesweet "Tarragon" that sounds like tarragon tastes, the fun "New Town", the honest "Hot Seat", the rockingrollicking "Giant Sands" & the grandiose "See You Around".
A classic.......1999-08-01
I'm averse to writing "reviews" on Amazon. I loathe the way such terms as "classic" and "genious" are tossed around. Nonetheless, here I am reviewing About To Choke, calling it a classic, describing its creator as a genious. The album's haunting, beautiful, sparse music is on par with Joni Mitchell's Blue. Vic Chesnutt, I should add, is one of the most gifted, intelligent, and kindest songwriters around. One of the underrated greats of our time.
A talented songwriter.......1999-02-19
A must have CD for anyone who enjoys great songwriting. The music is beautiful but sparse, a good backdrop for Chesnutt's powerful voice. Honesty and cynicism, hope and sadness, joy and longing: the range of emotion that come through his voice is astounding. The clever and poetic lyrics bring to mind small-town living, and are entertaining as well as thought provoking. Overall, a beautiful piece of work.

Yes........2006-03-05
This album is as close to a live Craw show as most of you will ever come. Craw's touring/shows is sporadic at best, but if you can see them, make every effort to. I saw them at a friends house/garage in Columbia, Missouri, and was completely and utterly terrified and blown away. The band set up very quietly, tuned up their instruments, and then...EXPLODED into the very small room we were all crammed into, splitting up and literally becoming part of the audience. This was the lost nation road tour, and the set pretty much followed the order of the album. Being in that room, I lost all connection with the outside world, and was absorbed into Craw. It was a truly epic show, and one that could never be recreated, but Derd Niffer comes close on this one. Their thick, forboding live sound pours out of this CD better than any of their other recordings. If you want to give Craw a chance, this is the CD to get. Enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
poisoned pens.......2003-07-30
mean of me to give this three stars, but I think it's what Paul Heaton would have wanted, perverse curmudgeon that he is.
It's possibly their best album too - before the bitter (and often violent) lyrics entirely overwhelmed the honey-soaked tunes, alienating his co-singer Biana Corrigan and losing a large part of the charm of the group. The highlights are superb (utterly British) soulful pop songs, heartfelt, heartbroken and wry - A Little Time and, most of all, Let Love Speak Up Itself. However, you can get these gems on the best of, as did the majority of the British record buying public.
There's obvious filler material that drags down the level of the album, (I've Come for my Award), but it's something about the black heart of this album that makes listening to it less aural joy, more Joy Division. Maybe that's no bad thing.
Quirky with attitude.......2002-01-28
This British group's bright and clear pop sound complements their sharp and acidic lyrics surprisingly well. The best example is the disturbingly upbeat and cheery backing to 'Should've Kept My Eyes Shut' which gives a grim glimpse of domestic violence.
The album opens with the sweeping sound in 'Tonight I Fancy Myself', which refers to, among other things, lost legs and a "partly severed head". 'A Little Time', the beautifully simple single with an intriguing film clip, should become a classic tale of lover versus lover. Dave Hemingway and Briana Corrigan make it more of a duel than a duet.
Again, sounding like we're about to hear a happy Madness or Style Council-esque tune, Hemingway sings of "ugly babies" and admits to failure in 'Book'.
This contrast is used almost throughout and works well right to the final track, 'I Hate You Tonight (But You're Interesting)'.
Housemartins Paul Heaton and Hemingway launched The Beautiful South in 1989 and this is the outfit's second album. Second albums are notoriously disappointing. Not this one.
wonderfully innovative, warped lyrics set to melodic genius.......1999-10-25
Borrowed the album off a friend. I thought one or two tunes hit the spot but with successive playings the whole album took on a mesmerising effect. I've since played the grooves off and bought all their other CDs on speculation. The lyrics are mischievious, funny, delinquent and at times surreal. I've been spreading the good word about the CD and now most visitors to my place know who they're going to hear a lot of. By the way after several weeks I finally returned the CD and bought my own. Probably my favourite CD of the last four years. My recommendation is try it, persevere with it and buy it. You'll like it! 'Quench' also approaches this CD for quality but falls slightly short in lyrical deviousness.

Customer Reviews:
A Nice Single.......2006-03-25
This is a good Single from the New Sepultura. I've always considered Derrick Green to be a poor substitute for Max Cavalera but ignoring the fact that he's a replacement, he does do a pretty good job. If you are looking for the rare songs from the Against era, you'll want to get this single (containing two rare songs) as well as the rare Tribus Import disc (containing six rare songs).
1. Choke 7/10: one of the best songs off of Against.
2. Gene Machine/Don't Bother Me 8/10: a cover of a Bad Brains song that can also be found on the Bad Brains Tribute. The vocal effects on this song are rather odd. Part of this song is also played with Max Cavalera on the live Under a Pale Grey Sky.
3. Against (Demo) 6/10: The main difference from the original is that the short beginning is not present and Derrick's vocals sound very different. I never considered the original to be too great because I consider it to be too short, so same with the demo though it's interesting to hear.
So my conclusion, get this if you really like the new Sepultura, are a Sepultura fanatic (such as myself) or both. They may not make this anymore, but for some reason people are selling this used for outrageously low prices. I got my copy for 95 cents, maybe you can too.
Good stuff.........2000-06-15
As one of the only singles released from their latest album "Against", Sepultura proves beyond a doubt that they can still lay down some mad grooves. This CD's great for any collection, and also for someone looking for something new. Check this one out.

this is the best they could do?.......2001-06-27
"purr la perla" is an excellent song, but the other three tracks here are thoroughly weak, just barely passable as b-sides. As a massive Cocteau Twins fan who found Mono tolerable, I was hoping for much more, but it seems that Mr. Guthrie has lowered his standards tremendously. This stuff sounds like the barely-thought-out too-simple toss-offs that mar the Twins' final few albums. Innovative it ain't.

I'd rather be on fire.......2006-06-06
I don't know what the previous reviewer was listening to. She Loves Me... She Loves Me Not was a great album but song for song Choke easily wins out. This 5 song EP is absolutely unforgiving. The last song (Target Practice) is in my opinion the best song Kiss It Goodbye ever produced. It was first issued on their demo (find it if you can, there's a song on there that isn't available anywhere else). Tim Singer's lyrics are reminiscent of Henry Rollins. He delivers them in a passionate scream, but you can still understand them. They're personal and angry but not corny and are easy to relate to. The music is heavy and brutal. Kiss It Goodbye and Deadguy (Tim Singer and guitarist Kieth Huckins' previous band) have influenced a lot of the better hardcore/metal/punk bands that are around today (some the best of those are Every Time I Die, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Nora). Deadguy/Kiss It Goodbye is the band that most of today's pseudo tough guy false metal bands are trying to be. They don't come anywhere close.

Wicked.......2005-08-12
This Cd is awesome, choke is the best band i've heard in years for pumping me up, tracks like 'recoil' and 'one less thing at a time' are amazing.
Authentic...Intelligent...Such small words to describe Choke.......2004-10-06
Brilliant...Unbelievable...Again, a great band that doesn't get half the success they deserve. God bless Choke for being who they are. They give awesome shows too (saw them 4 times already). Mixing with such talent short metal passages, weird tempos and punk fastness isn't given to any other band. Schawn is one of the most original singer I've seen in a long loooooong time. You get the feeling sometimes that he sings something else while the music behind plays, but if you take the time to listen carefully, you'll see that every vocal line has its place and is wiselly incorporated into songs. My fav Choke album out of their 5 releases, and is for anyone that's waiting for something unpredictable or simply....good, awesome, jaw-dropping music. Enjoy.
P.S. The album title is FOREWORD with an O. I said FOREWORD.

This band..........2005-10-17
This CD is incredible from Choke. This band is my best ever. Each album is getting better, they're good music creators. Their lyrics are awesome, the guitars are incredibles, I miss their last show in Montreal and I can't wait to see them when they'll come back (I hope so).
A Little Different.......2005-08-12
This Cd is good, but much different then regular choke albums, the songs are a lot softer and longer, not that thats bad. If you think of this album as its own album and dont compare to other choke albums it's pretty good.
Slow Fade Or : How I Learned to Question Infinity.......2005-05-18
Choke has came out with another album that will surprise. The experimenting with guitar effects adds a new color of mood and the slow tempos feed curious ears. There are still elements that you recognize from previous albums, but at first listen you really notice a change. If you are stuck in a musical rut looking for a new sound you will not be disappointed.
