Album Description

Since 1996, Norway's Tristania have been brewing up some of the finest Gothic Death Rock on the scene today. In 1997, just a year after the band's formation, Tristania recorded their first demo with sultry vocalist Vibeke Stene. Since then Tristania have gone on to release four successful albums, each cleverly building on the one before. Last year's SPV debut, Ashes, was met with critical acclaim the world over. On Illumination, their fifth and most majestic recording, Tristania have once again worked with famed producer Waldemar Sorychta (Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, Tiamat, Samael etc.) to do what they do best: light the way into a world of music where darkness and beauty meet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you liked Ashes...........2007-07-13

It's fair to say that Tristania's sound has become less symphonic and operatic, definitely. I agree with the other reviewers - you may be disappointed here, if that's what you're looking for. That is not to say, however, that "Illumination" is a bad album. Actually, it's quite good. It's dark, heavy, melodic and beautiful. If you were a fan of the direction they took in "Ashes" you will like this.

5 out of 5 stars A Surprise Album.......2007-02-22

In my opinion, I think this current album Illumination sounds great both musically and lyrics. Much of the work sounds very different from their previous albums. One thing I really noticed a lot was there weren't anyone singing with extreme vocals, which in a way is good since sometimes you need to hear more the main vocalists than there guest vocalist. Favorite song out of the album Down and Ab Initio, Vebeke's vocals are really beautiful in those songs.

3 out of 5 stars Departing Destined.......2007-02-19

Like any serious band, Tristania are still trying to advance their sound. Unfortunately, evidence continues to mount that Tristania's glory days are behind them. This album offers more variety and accessibility than the last album, the uneven Ashes, though that album was more intriguing and rocked harder. Here, Tristania have moved away from dark metal and thankfully have mostly dropped the extreme vocals that have always appeared extraneous within their sound. Tristania are now an increasingly mainstream purveyor of goth dirges, which indicates a partially successful advancement in songwriting and playing. Bassist Rune Osterhus and drummer Kenneth Olsson are especially strong on this album, even though the band is mellowing out overall. The songs here that best illustrate development in songwriting, and best exhibit the band's musical talents, include "Open Ground," "The Ravens," and a couple of others. But otherwise, this album runs out of steam pretty quickly, as it is made up primarily of turgid semi-ballads that hold little musical interest. There are also some unpleasant surprises like "Sacrilege," which sounds like overblown 80s arena metal, and "Ab Initio" (a bonus track on my edition of the disc), which is a failed experiment in psychedelic grunge.

This album also brings to a head the unlikely curse of Tristania - two stupendous singers. The operatic emotion of the beautiful Vibeke Stene and the haunting rich baritone of Osten Bergoy are at the forefront of this album where they belong, and both singers truly shine brightly throughout. However, giving both of these considerable talents room to roam means that neither is fully utilized, and you can only fantasize about how majestic an album could be when carried by either of them individually. Also, despite harmonizing occasionally, Vibeke and Osten are not effectively utilized as a team, and give the impression of singing their parts in isolation. This album sums up the fate of Tristania - two outstanding singers holding each other back from greatness, and a musical backdrop that is becoming less distinct and more directionless with each album. It's time for Vibeke and Osten to both go solo. [~doomsdayer520~]

2 out of 5 stars Not so good........2007-02-10

SO....yeah...After Ashes I said I'd never buy another Tristania album, but; after reading the pre-reviews of "Illumination" being different, I thought "hey, why not?" (If you liked "Ashes" no need to read further).

WOW....if you liked Morten Veland era Tristania do not buy this Album, if you read this review never having listened to Tristania, and you like goth metal with choirs, orhcestras, operatic voices, and superb beauty and beast vocals, etc I'd go with Morten's new band Sirenia, or the Tristania albums, "Widow's Weed," and "Beyond the Veil" and coincidentally, Sirenia has a new one coming out in less than a month in the states. Having heard some if it on myspace I'd say save your money for that one, especially if your a person with limited music budget. It may not be fair to compare the band from the time of Morten to the present line-up, but the difference is massive, and in this listeners opinion, not for the better. On "Illumination," Tristania sounds like a younger Lacuna Coil, which isn't bad....for Lacuna Coil.

There is very little use of Vibke's airy angelic operatic voice, and the choirs and orchestra are almost non existent. As stated before, with one run-through of the album, it is very easy to compare them to a band sounding like Lacuna Coil, which is a huge jump (in my personal opinion) in the wrong direction from Widow's Weed and Veil. If your looking for supreme goth/black metal look for Sirenia. Nothing beats the lion roar of Morten.

If you liked "Ashes" then this album is up your alley, not much of a jump, although Vibke's vocal role is increased and the black metal voice is significantly less. The clean male voice and Vibke's voice harmonize...a lot... Leading them to sound a lot like Lacuna Coil

If you liked Ashes, buy this, if your more of a fan of Morten Veland era Tristania, you will be disappointed...go with Sirenia's "Nine Destinies and a Downfall."

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite ever! .......2007-02-10

I agreed with the last reviewer with the word " wow" but this album is more than " the best album for 2007 " .
i ordered this album with no expectation!!! i loved their last album " ashes" very much but i didn`t expect or never thought that " Illumination " would be one of my favorite cd or would be even better than ashes.
i would like to have an album that most of it is great. i would like to put it on my cd player and just enjoy most of it. The songs are very enjoyable , great music, great processing, great sound and i found their music very refreshing. I never thought Tristania will be one of my favorite band or one of their album would be one of my favorite but "ashes " and " Illumination " put Tristania on my map! real masterpieces !!! How can we say that one album is so great or one of the best ? Many other albums became pale or weak beside it. i ordered new albums from very successfuls bands and very great artists but after i put "Illumination" on my cd player i put the othe cd`s i got lately beside! (I do`nt speak as a fan , i never was).

5 out of 5 stars Not as Raw.......2007-05-25

I bought Beyond The Veil first and that is now my ALL-TIME favorite cd ever, so I bought this one. Although not as...raw...I guess you would say as BTV, this album is still barely less a value. I have to say, I find it amusing that World of Glass and Sirenia's Sixes & Sevens are so similar, when the artists split for "musical differences". Needless to say, if you like this cd or that one, you will like the other as well! Top of the line for Beauty and Beast Symphonic Metal. I keep searching for something to top BTV, but doubt I will ever find it.

5 out of 5 stars Even Without Morten Tristania Still Enchants!!.......2007-04-21

I have been listening to this cd for only a week and man do I love it! There seems to be people who disagree with the growling vocals of these types of band. But I on the other hand, feel that its key to formulating this great sound and melodic symphony. Especially cause this new growler isnt as extreme sounding as Morten. Which should make people exploring this type of music more eased into it. Not taking credit away from Morten who I still feel is a better growler And who has made masterpieces with this band hence Beyond The Veil, and Widows Weeds to name a few. But this is easier to the ear for the newbies exploring this type of music. But to eliminate the growls would just make it to mellow and soft. And would sound somewhat along the lines of Within Temptation and Evanescence. Which is so played out right now. If you find yourself enjoying this release then start backwards and get there other past albums. True masterpieces there!!

5 out of 5 stars Accelerating.......2006-07-07

Awesome album! In these nine/ten tracks (I got 9) you have a beautiful singing soprano, an orchestra, a choir, grunting, an extremly low baritone male vox, crushy gruitars, and pounding drums, along with some symphonic keyboards.

1.The Shining Path: My favorite, an opera masterpiece (10/10)
2.Wormwood: An average song, very apolcalyptic (7/10)
3.Tender Trip on Earth: A nice little love song (9/10)
4.Lost: No Vibeke, least favorite (2/10)
5.Deadlocked: A beautiful song, no screams, just Vibeke (10/10)
6.Selling Out: More of a slower song, but still cool (8/10)
7.Hatred Grows: An awesome song, love it (10/10)
8.World of Glass: Similar to a WT song, but I like it (9/10)
9.Crushed Dreams: I really like this song, it's a good closer (10/10)
I highly reccomend this CD, for all people who love Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Nightwish, Epica, After forever, Sirenia, and Penumbra you should buy this!

4 out of 5 stars "See God and his hand of death/Squeezing out earth's final breath".......2006-07-03

From the second track, Wormwood, my favorite, which concerns the end of times as described in The Book of Revelations. God gets some attention in most of the other songs also, directly or indirectly, and not always in the best light, but He can handle it. The first song, The Shining Path, involves a woman being burned at the stake; no name is given but since the album was recorded in France, perhaps it is Joan of Arc.

Every song contains vocals of all types: choir, female operatic, growling (I guess the proper term is extreme vocals), and regular male vocals, usually of a very mellow type. There are times when two or more of these types are combined, and most of the songs have the choir singing sections in Latin, something I particularly like. There are times when the growling goes almost to the point where I would say it is too much, but it never quite gets there before one of the other vocal styles jumps in. A very listenable compilation rating four stars based on my tastes. (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)

5 out of 5 stars Death Metal can be pretty!!!.......2006-03-24

Wow, I'm not very fan of growling, and this Tristania album, i don't know if it's true, but what it seems to me, is the one with less growling, and more Vibeke's angelic voice, and that's definitly a highlight! Try only to listen "Deadlocked", and you'll understand what I mean!!!
Althrough it has growlings, there not bad at all, and all togheter (growlings, Vibeke's voice, choir, instruments) is really beautiful! If you're a Simphonic/Death/Gothic Metal fan, give it a try!

2 out of 5 stars I've seen better.......2006-09-01

I own this album since 2001. At the beggining i listen to it several times and love the whole thing. But, i rapidly lose my interest for it. Maybe, one or three times a year i give it another try, but... When, i see here that this album deserved more than four stars i was surprised. For me the drum is a weak point. I find it conventional and it don't fit well the music. The snare sound ridiculous and the playing got no feeling, a computer could have done better. Another point is the choir in latin. I heard the latin lyrics somewere else and it appears that the band copy paste already existing christian choirs themes (ex. Agnus Dei, Solima) Knowing that, the music become rediculous, and i'm sure that the meaning of the choirs lyrics have no link with the main lyrics. Bands that are similar to them and that in my sense are more better are Kovenant, Acturus and Evergrey. This, tree have never lose my attention. Look for them.

If I were to recommend a cd it would be this one.. It's Tristania's Best work. To me anyway...Favorite song. 'Sequal of Decay'.If you plan on looking into Tristania it would be this cd.. Then World of Glass... But stay away from Ashes Unless you are a hardcore fan..

5 out of 5 stars Love It!!!.......2006-03-23

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for goth metal freaks.......2006-03-14

Tristania is one of the seminal Norwegian goth metal bands. They combine a unique trio of death metal grunts, clean male and female vocals. Vibeke Stene, the female vocalist, will transport you into realms of ecstasy with the ethereal, soprano quality of her voice. "Beyond the Veil" is an absolute stunner, as far as debut albums go. Every song can be listened to multiple times. "Lethean River" is a personal favourite. I bought all the Tristania albums in one go, and it's one of the best decisions that I've ever made. Although one of the co-founders, Morten Veland, left after "Widow's Weeds", they still continued to churn out great stuff, although a slight difference in quality can be discerned. Nevertheless, you'll get your money's worth.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of It's Scene.......2006-04-25

Disreguard L Salisbury's review. It isn't helpfull in the least because the review is completely false. First off, the female vocalist sounds nothing like Kate Bush and second, Tristania has never been a death metal band. Leave that to the likes of Nile, Cryptopsy, Soilent Green and Necrophagist.

Salisbury did, however, get it right when the term "Masterpiece" was used. This is one of the best albums of the genre. Every single song is just as good as the last. Each one delivers a beautiful display of atmosphere and emotion. Sure the guitar work is slightly on the simplistic side but the brooding atmosphere and beauty created here greatly surpasses anything that shear shredding could produce.

When you think of gothic metal you probably think of The Birthday Massacre, Beseech, Sentenced, Sethian, Type O Negative and To/Die/For eh? Well, Tristania has taken the genre to a whole new level with the likes of Katatonia.

Case in point, this is a brilliant display of gothic/doom metal and if you want something more, Try "Beyond the Veil" and Katatonia's earlier works.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I own........2006-03-31

The first songs I heard from Tristania were from Beyond the Veil album. Later I bought Widow's Weeds, and I must admit, that altough both albums have their own distinct style I still prefer Widow's Weeds more. Maybe it's because of the melancholy dark romantic theme or songwriting, maybe it's the peaceful sound.

Usually a metal album is heavily compressed and way too loud and aggressive. Widow's Weeds instead is mixed and mastered more traditionally - you can in fact hear all the different instruments, and the cd won't blow my speakers up when I put the cd into my player. I really appreciate Tristania's effort to produce a honestly good-sounding album. The songs don't even clip, as songs in metal other albums - like Beyond the Veil - do... I really wish I could find other albums like Widow's Weeds.

If someone thinks that growling is a big no, then I suggest to reconsider. It took me many years to learn to tolerate growling, not to speak of shrieking or female growling. It just takes time, like everything else. By ignoring all the good music with growling vocals is like ignoring one of your basic tastes - bitter.

Besides that, I like the intro and outro parts - Preludum and Postludum - of the album, too. They allow me to relax and adjust to the forthcoming bliss of symphonic gothic metal, and afterwards give me time to realize, that it is over again.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent cd..........2005-08-18

I really loved this cd. It is extremely beautiful vocally, and the sound is very romantic. I'm a huge Cradle of Filth fan, and then cd is still very gothic-sounding, but waay softer. Perfect for indulging my softer side. Soaring operatic female vocals and growls from the male vocalists make this cd a perfect balance. My only complaint is that it is a bit short, clocking about 50 minutes, and i really wish it was at least a full hour. Anyway, i seriously recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best ever recorded..........2004-12-28

This cd is absolutely amazing. I've always been a fan of more aggressive music, like death metal and black metal. But at the same time I love the beauty and majesty of classical music and Shakespearean sonnets. I thought I'd found exactly what I was looking for with Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, and Borknagar. Then i got a copy of Widow's Weeds. Doom metal is some of the most beautiful music ever written. And I believe that Tristania is one of the, if not the, absolute best, in this genre. All others (Theatre of Tragedy, My Dying Bride, etc.) pale in comparison. Morten Veland has a perfect doom growl, it doesn't sound forced or fake at all. And Vibeke. Vibeke Stene has the best voice I have ever heard. I thought Liv Kritine Espanaes of Theatre of Tragedy was the best until I heard Vibeke. Her voice is the most beautiful, so full of emotion. And this cd perfectly showcases that. From the sorrowful opening of Preludium, through all of the heartwrenching roars of Morten Veland and the sirenic angel singing of Vibeke Stene, and the eery haunting of postludium, this cd is musical perfection.

4 out of 5 stars A lack of diversity.......2004-06-25

Although this is the debut album from Tristania, I was introduced to them through World of Glass, and worked my way backwards. I believe they improved every album, although this isn't a bad album, just seems a bit repetitive(growl, sing, growl, keyboard).

The cd starts strong with Evenfall(Preludium isn't a song really), and then follows with 6 songs that lack any element that sets them apart from each other. Closes with Postludium, an eerie chant.

A decent album, way too much growling for my taste.

3 out of 5 stars Tristania Drops Beauty, Mr D Drops Tristania.......2007-04-19

When Morton Veland, the founder and creative genius behind Norwegian B&B band Tristania left to form Sirenia, most pundits thought that signaled a death knell for Tristania. However I thought, yes, but they still have Vibeke Stene. Stene has an hauntingly, alluring, pure voice that is intoxicating to listen to and sure enough, their release of World of Glass on the retreating footfalls of Veland seemed to bare that out. World of Glass was a strong album with Vibeke prominently featured.

In the meantime Veland was rolling along with two and a half (one was an EP) wonderful new albums but he still didn't have Vibeke.

So what did Tristania do on their new album Ashes? They witheld their greatest asset, relegating her to few lead vocals and mostly background vocals. Blaaaah! You guys blew it. Tristania is now more Death Metal than Beauty and the Beast. Death Metal fans may and probably will enjoy this album but I didn't think of them in that light or I wouldn't have wrote about them.

If they're going to so under-utilize Vibeke, they may as well send her packing over to Sirenia so she can reunite with Veland and make their music even better.

For those not familiar with Tristania, Ashes is their fourth full length album. It was preceded by Widows Weeds (1998), Beyond The Veil (1999) and World of Glass (2001). I would describe their music as Dark, Romantic, Symphonic Gothic, sometimes referred to as Beauty and the Beast music, in reference to the use of "growling" male vocals to offset the sweet, smooth, melodic sound of the female vocals, choirs and symphonic music. This style of music commands more popularity in other parts of the world than stateside, though adherents can be found everywhere. I don't know why they did it (Maybe they had budget concerns concerns with the new label) but they have abandoned some of the main tenets, that the previous three successful albums were built upon, by drifting into an even darker more atmospheric, less symphonic sound. There is very little of the previous sound but I did think three of the eight songs were better than average.

I enjoyed "Equalibrium", "Cure" and "Endogenisis" the best, probably because they were the most similar to the style that I was familiar with. "Equalibrium" starts pleasantly in a medium tempo with Vibeke taking on vocal duties. She is joined shortly by Osten Bergoy who on this number sings with clean vocals. There is nothing special about the music but it is consistent and enhances the pretty vocals. Others may disagree but I think "Cure" is very good. It has an slower atmospheric sad texture and also features Vibeke singing solo. Again the music is not particularly compelling but the overall effect of the song is, especially the wonderful piano playing in the middle backing Vibeke's heavenly voice. At 7:37 "Endogenisis" is the longest of all the songs, which are all fairly long. It starts out with some heavy growling but evolves quickly into a pretty ballad style, ethereal number, featuring clean vocals by Vibeke and Osten with an occasional growl.

    Conclusion

Not only did Tristania diminish Vibeke's role in favor of dueling snarling voxes but they got rid of the other factors of beauty like the choirs and violins. What a disappointment! After a four year wait and eagerly anticipating their next release to get this. Now I know how some feel about the new NIN release.

Surprisingly many reviewers think Ashes is a good album, which proves my point that those who enjoy Death Metal would probably think it's great, while those that don't won't. On the other hand there are those who agree with me too. While I don't necessarily agree with everything they go on to say, I do agree that this is not a good album overall. Final Rating 2.75 stars, rounded up.

3 out of 5 stars "The Song Of Demons Plays On The Wind".......2006-03-08

The interplay of opposites is a constant in life; day and night, darkness and light, male and female, good and bad. The same holds true for Tristania's 'Ashes' [Enhanced] [Special Edition].

To concentrate on the good I have two words, Vibeke Stene. When she is singing the lyrics and music take the listener on a hypnotizing and sometimes frightening trek into a Netherworld where "the Song of Demons" is clearly discerned. When she is not singing the music slips backward into a somewhat mediocre collection of tunes. Don't get me wrong, they're not bad songs, they just don't carry the same emotional impact when Vibeke isn't singing.

Receipt for Success: Keep Vibeke at the microphone as much as possible.

    5 out of 5 stars Nordic Gothic-Death-Opera Metal.......2000-09-09

Tristania is about the best newcomer in its genre: metal, symphonic elements (piano, violin) and the well-known "Beauty & The Beast" concept. The female vocals are very well represented, although she should be more involved with her vocals. The grunts are harsh and nice, although sometimes a little too 'screamy' and too less varied. However, in general is Widow's Weeds a very atmospheric, dark, romantic and professional album. Especially when you think of the average age of the members of about 20 years old. The 2nd song "Evenfall" is one of the best Gothic songs I ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Nord Metal That Everyone Will Love........2000-05-07

I never quite know what to say in these reviews, but I do know that this is one of the most beautiful albums that I have ever heard. Adriana calls this stuff Fe-Metal, which is my favorite kind; The stunningly beautiful vocalist Vibeke delivers a powerful performance... Anyway, on the inside of the CD we are greeted by a portrait of the band, adorned in their lovely Celtic garb; normally that would indicate a severe Poser complex, but in this case they really live up to the image. Like I said, Aryan Nations only deliver the finest. If you like Chaos and Destructo metal from Sweden, this isn't the stuff. This instead is Swedish, Yes, death metal, but of the more mellow type. Definitely nice to get with the chicks, too. When I played it for my wife the first time... Hail Sweden!

5 out of 5 stars This is the next step.......1999-12-30

If you like doom metal, bands like Theatre of Tragedy, Celestial Season, Ancient Ceremony, buy this right now. As this music continues to evolve, Tristania is at the frontier. Imagine doom metal growls and screams side by side with operatic female vocals, along with melodic heavy guitar riffs, keyboards and violin, all balanced for the perfect effect. This music rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Operatic goth metal as its best !!!.......1999-10-12

Anyone into Cradle of Filth, Theatre of Tragedy, Sins of thy Beloved and Dismal Euphony will be darkly seduced by this unique and majestic effort! Vibeke, charismatic and soprano vocalist, will charm every listener easily. Very professionnally done, this CD is one of the best of the genre. Can not wait for new one later this month ! Keep up those siren songs Vibeke !!!

Virgin Black's second release (they had a 4 track demo before this) is nothing short of AMAZING. A perfect blend of goth, industrial, classical, and of course their own personal touch that almost can't be explained. It's frightening, and yet elegant at the same time. Granted, it's only 3 tracks and about 15 minutes long, but if you enjoyed Sombre Romantic, this album is for YOU.

Tristania has long been one of the world's leading gothic metal bands and its latest outing, Illumination, demonstrates that the Norwegian outfit needn't worry about losing its footing in that arena any time soon. While not the overwhelming triumph that previous efforts (1999's Beyond the Veil, 2005's Ashes) were, Illumination marries the traditional dark, heavy riffs and dark, operatic vocals of the genre to stunning effect on tracks such as "The Ravens," "Mercyside," and "Sanguine Sky," and shines its light on the pure beauty of Vibeke Stene's world-class voice during "Destination Departure" and the commercially ambitious "Down." While Tristania lacks the commercial appeal that others of its ilk--Madder Mortem, Lacuna Coil--have and its passion for the atmospheric sometimes becomes weightier than necessary, Illumination will take its rightful place in the band's catalogue as a fine and at times brilliant work. --Jedd Beaudoin

I have all Tristania CDs though they were not in my top favorates. The Album Ashes started pushing them into my favorates and Illumination has
completed this process. I first downloaded the whole album for free in a good quality MP3, but then decided that I want to have it in Audio and baught CD .

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-04-11

A beautiful CD. I love each and every song on this album; although it has a slightly different sound that's more akin to Ashes rather than World of Glass. Great album
