Short and sweet acoustic offering from AIC.......2007-08-03
This album is only 4 songs long, plus one hidden track (really goofy), but it boasts two of their best songs: "Brother" and "Got Me Wrong". These tracks showcase a lighter, acoustic side to AIC. "Right Turn" and "Am I Inside" are both great tunes, as well. If you are a fan, this is a must-have set. It was released between Facelift and Dirt, probably just to keep the fans happy. I enjoy it when bands try different approaches. This was a great addition to their discography.
AIC just isn't AIC without Layne.......2007-07-09
I love this CD. It shows that even heavy grungers can have a semi soft side.
SAP A Great EP...Just Too Short...4.5 stars..........2007-05-02
Alice In Chains FACELIFT was a grunge-metal whirlwind that went platinum and introduced the world to Alice In Chains. When it came time to record a follow up, the band went in the studio and came out with a big surprise. SAP, the band's first ep, was a starkly different collection than it's predecessor, and it introduced us to a vastly more melodic and introspective side of the band.
"Brother" and "Am I Inside" are two of the most haunting cuts written by Alice In Chains (both were written by Cantrell and Staley respectively). "Got Me Wrong" mixes a smooth, melodic side with a blustery chorus, and it was a wisely chosen single. "Right Turn" is a nice jam session featuring vocalists Chris Cornell of Soundgarden/Audioslave fame, and Mark Arm of Mudhoney. The concluding bonus cut on the album is a silly goof that was wisely left off the tracklisting, and although it cracks me up all the time, it might be seen as more stupid than funny (you have to decide for yourself I found it lightly amusing).
So all in all, SAP is a surprising strong and short collection of songs that show a much different side of Alice In Chains. While the bonus cut does nothing to add to the collection itself, SAP still remains a necessity in the grunge back catalog, and most importantly, in the Alice In Chains catalog.
Saptastic.......2006-09-04
A very good attempt at acoustic music by AiC. It gets the following ratings:
Got Me Wrong - 10/10 Best song on the album!
Brother - 9/10 Great song, but I think the unplugged version is better
Right Turn - 8.5/10 Somewhat catchy
Am I Inside - 8.5/ On level with Right Turn
Love Song - ...
Short but Sweet.......2006-09-03
If you're an Alice in Chains fan this short EP is essencial for you. There are some pretty good tracks on this. Even the hidden track is pretty "interesting". Anyway probably the best track from it is of course "Got Me Wrong". The other tracks are pretty good too. Here are some ratings...
1. Brother - 9/10
2. Got Me Wrong - 10/10
3. Right Turn - 8.5/10
4. Am I Inside - 9.5/10
5. Bonus Track 1 - 8.5/10
Overall: 91% A-
This is pretty much just a nice album to own if you enjoy the bands music or find it for real cheap somewhere as I did. It's good for what its worth being a short but sweet EP.

Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Jar of Sap........2006-02-01
This is a double-disc I'd found and bought at a used store years ago, and had never seen another one until right now. It's basically just the two "Jar Of Flies" and "Sap" Ep's packaged together. It has no extra tracks, but the originals are there, and the majority of the artwork from each disc. I think the two would have made a nice single-disc, but hey. This is a sweet thing for the collector, or for that person who never got either Ep before. I'm glad I have mine.
Alice, no longer in chains.......2001-01-16
This album was the first i heard form Alice in chains. It has an idealic balance of soft, mellow music right through to their "typical" style. This vinyl edition is a must to listen to, especially with the SAP LP which has a lot of unusual tracks that you would not normally expect from such a top notch band. To an Alice In Chains fan that does not have this album, then what are you waiting for? Truely a musical master piece!

Mac McCaughan tipped his hand about his goal for Portastatic early on with a cover of Brian Eno's "St. Elmo's Fire." His mostly solo side project is a vehicle to make his own version of Another Green World (or at least Here Come the Warm Jets) in his basement eight-track studio. Clarinet (courtesy of Lambchop's Jonathan Marx) and grand piano (ably played by McCaughan, who also tackles synthesizers, e-bowed guitar, vocals, and most other instruments) are the dominant sounds on Portastatic's third full-length effort, but this is no pseudo-classical avant-jazz minimalist post-rock wank-off. McCaughan displays the same unerring knack for hooks and inviting songcraft that he's always shown in Superchunk, only here he slows down the tempos, varies the instrumentation, and concerns himself more with the background (weird ambient soundscapes) than the foreground (verses, choruses, and such). Whether it's evidence of the notoriously prolific McCaughan easing up a bit, or he simply scraped up enough money to indulge himself this time, The Nature of Sap benefits from an attention to detail somewhat lacking in earlier, lower-fi outings. gotta listen to understand.......2002-01-12
you can't explain good music in words, and this is one of those cd's. And also being a debut cd makes it more of an amazing feat.
buy the cd, you will be weirded out at first, but it's always the cd's you hate at first that you end up in love with forever.
Not as well known as they should be..........2001-06-20
This CD was recommended to me before I'd ever heard of Cyclefly, and it won me over straight away. Just about anyone else I've mentioned them or recommended them to hasn't heard of them either, which is a shame really because it's a downright decent album. I think that it's Declan's vocals that really make the music work; it's this that really sets them apart from the similar styles of Placebo, Smashing Pumpkins etc. The songs are of excellent standard, 'Violet High', 'Whore' and 'Supergod' being the highlights for me, and some of the guitar work is very good. I can't help but think of what a second album could hold...
Good Debut.......2000-08-21
I've heard comparisons here to Bush and Foo Fighters, yet I think they belong in a heavier class. They sound somewhere between Videodrone, Deadlights, Smashing Pumpkins, and Finger Eleven, but this CD varies a lot from song to song. You have your heavy groovecore on a song like Crawl Down and then you have the lush Whore just a few songs after. They are very melodic and as much as I'd like to call them metal, I think they'd rather be considered closer to the Smashing Pumpkins. The vocals sound like a little deeper voiced Billy Corgan, and the guitars are very deep and multi dimensional. This is nicely produced as well and the music is just right, not too demo-ish yet not over produced. The drummer is great, especially on Violet High, where he really goes all out and drums wonderfully. I do have a problem with the bass though, because it's hard to hear him at all. When you do, however, you get these really weird tones that I kind of like. It could definitely be on alternative radio, although the lyrics are very brutal, but yet greatly written, much similar to New York hardcore crew Glassjaw. Overall, it's a fairly good record and band to check out. My favorite tracks here are Following Yesterday, Crawl Down, and Violet High. Alt. Metal would be the best term to call them.
Outright Explosive Debut.......2000-07-27
I picked up a copy of "Launch" (a CD Rom showcasingnew music)at my local Guitar Center a few months ago and decided tocheck it out on a rainy day. Wading through the various pop standards found on the CD, I came across a snippit of a live performance of a little song called "Better Than You" and was completely blown away. It is incredibly hard to explain how amazing this CD actually is. Cyclefly is a searing collection of hard rock songs which harkens back to some of the earlier Smashing Pumpkin albums (the vocalist sounds like a slightly more demented Billy Corigan with an Irish accent and the lead guitarist is simply amazing). Featuring several standout songs (including tracks 5,6,8, and 11), Generation Sap also flows brilliantly as an overall album. It has been years since I've heard a debut album so polished and confident. You'll have a hell of a time finding this record in the real world, though, so order it now. You WILL NOT be disappointed.
lusty.......2000-04-07
Cyclefly are an incredibly likeable band. They're lead singer has a marvelous voice, and the music is meticulously crafted.
I do admit that cyclefly are pretty much just a dirtier version of placebo, but they pack all of the swagger and sway of a stooges-era iggy pop. great music
