4 out of 5 stars progressive, thrashy, nice innovation.......2006-07-11

Tourniquet deserves major credit for daring to break the Christian metal mold of modelling themselves after successful secular acts. (There are many other original bands recently, but such originality was less common a few years back). The technical musicianship here is unmistakable. Percussion is especially noteworthy, but the guitar work deserves mention as well. Styles and tempos are mixed frequently, and intelligently. One sees hints of jazz, classical guitar, and doom rock, but it's mostly energetic, slightly unorthodox (progressive) thrash.

There is a near-instrumental (some dubbing), and one song with a hip-hop vocal. Normally, this would strike me as forced and be a distraction, byt Tourniquet is smoothly eclectic enough to make it work here. And Broken Chromosomes shows splendid creativity as a song sung from the perspective of a person with Down's syndrome. The finale of this song definitely is triumphant, which marks a sharp contrast from the despairing tone of the song up that point. (They also toss in a dash of what sounds like disco at the end here, which does not detract from the "metalness" in the least, but actually adds punch at the end--if you hear it, you'll know what I mean.) Other lyrical themes include a domestic violence, a protest against animal experimentation (one of the doomiest songs Tourniquet has done), and a theological critique of numerous, what traditional Christians take to be pseudo-Christian "cults."

A possible drawback (though I adjusted) was the occasional Guns'and Roses, nasally kind of vocal, mixed with a vaguely Megadeth-ish barking. But while it isn't that good, it works because this band "fits" so many styles into what they are doing, that any one vocal style can be used without seeming out of place. If you focus on Christian metal, this is 5 stars--but any objective metalhead would acknowledge its merits, whether or not its style(s) is their own particular cup of tea. Throhghout, it is musically and thematically well-performed,diverse, and creative.

4 out of 5 stars soon to be classic.......2005-01-05

Showing off great technical skills, Tourniquet's second album really shows how great of musicians they really are.

4 out of 5 stars Metal For Your Brain.......2004-11-12

This is Tourniquet's second release and one of the band's best. "Psycho Surgery" is a huge progression over the band's great debut "Stop The Bleeding". The band was still in the process of finding it's unique sound, what some have termed Thinking Man's Metal. The bands influences , (Slayer, Megadeth, Metalica), clearly show through. The title track is an absolutely amazing Slayer influenced thrasher and still one of the band's best songs. "Sterotaxic Atrocities" is the best song that Megadeth never wrote. Guy Ritter, the band's singer does his best Mustaine on this track. The thrash riffs are heavy and fast. The vocals, handled by Ritter and lead guitarist Gary Lenaire are melodic and agressive. The band not only play great riifs, but they also know how to write great songs . This cd is recommended for fans of lates 80's / early 90's thrash metal. However, unlike so many bands of that time Tourniquet delivers heavy music with a purpose. Music that was made to offer hope in a world so full of despair.

Simply a VERY STUPID CD complete waste of money as with all their other albums.

5 out of 5 stars Great cd's.......2007-08-03

Great cd's. Really classics of that time period of Christian rock. Stop the Bleeding is the best cd I have heard of Tourniquet. I believe these are also the two classic cd's of Tourniquet. No collection would be complete without them.

5 out of 5 stars Old Cassette that I have of Tourniguet.......2004-02-17

I have a cassette tape of Tourniquet that recorded Sept 11,1990 by Intense Records.I'm assuming this tape was recorded at the time they started recording. It's a good tape, one of the best I've heard in that year (1990).I never thought that they made itcause I never found any of their cd's.Now they have a 2 Disc cd for 50 bucks and more cd's I wasn't aware of.I find that this is the best tape or cd to hear.I would like to find out what this tape is worth.

4 out of 5 stars 2 incredible albums...and can be bought NEW for $12.......2002-07-04

These are two of Tourniquet's best albums, hands down. The ultra-technical guitars, the 'King Diamond-esque' vocals, right down to the superior song writing...

4 out of 5 stars Two albums that maybe shouldn't be in one.......2001-01-14

I just became a Tourniquet fan recently and got their new Cd "Microscopic View of a Telescopic Realm", but after that got old, I started going back and listening to their old stuff (which is really hard to find now!). STOP THE BLEEDING If you've heard old Stryper or Bride albums, this one's merely a duplicate. It rocks, but Guy Ritter's high-pitched shrieking gets old. This album is too 80's for Tourniquet. Why even feature those two musicians as part of the band when they did absolutely NOTHING on Stop the Bleeding? PSYCHO SURGERY: ah yes, one of my favorite albums to date. Ritter's voice is unpredictable and the two guitarists are amazing (that's why I like it). This album is more speed-metal with unpredicatable changes in beat and vocals. But only 9 songs?!! (one of which is just a musical) Not fair. If you ask me, they should have done a Psycho Surgery/Pathogenic Occular Dissonance Cd set instead! (Pathogenic is after Psycho and is more of the speed metal I like from Tourniquet.) Psycho Surgery is all you'll like from this set really.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for metal enthusiasts........2000-05-03

Even though they saw fit to release most of these older Christian metal groups CDs as two CD sets, this is still worth buying. Tourniquet starts off with Stop the Bleeding and cuts it up from there. Granted, if you weren't much into the 80's metal scene, you may not like the first CD. Guy Ritter sings better saprano than a lot of women I've heard. Despite that, Lenair's guitar playing, and Kirkpatrick's drumming are something you just can't ignore. That in itself makes this CD worth it all. You Get What you Pray For was their single off of this one, and it is something you can jam to. Psycho Surgery sets the stage for some of their best work. Guy Ritter came down off the 80's trip, for the most part, and really refined his voice. As for the rest of the band, they took what they knew how to do, and put out 110%. I'll admit I don't know anything about how to describe a guitar player's abilities, but there is some awesome stuff on this CD. There's a guest apearance by PID on Spineless that takes you back to oldschool rap, and that's pretty cool. Now, if you're looking for anything beyond these two, you may have some trouble finding Pathogenic Occular Dissonance, which was Guy Ritter's and Eric Mendez's last CD with the band. As for the following albums, they should be no problem. For their best work without Ritter, look for Vanishing Lessons and Microscopic View of a Telescopic World, with Luke Easter at vocals. As for Crawl to China, well, that wasn't the Tourniquet I've ever known.
