Album Description
Marina Records proudly presents The In-Kraut -- twenty handpicked soul, beat, now sound, mod and soundtrack gems from Germany -- all recorded between 1966 and 1974. Among them many Kraut-pleasin' obscurities and long-forgotten nuggets that appear now for the very first time on CD. While the musical climate in Germany of the late '60s and early '70s was clearly dominated by horrible Schlagers, nevertheless, records of outstanding class were cut with Teutonic precision. Just check out "Gemini" by Günter Noris, a stomping piano-led instrumental worthy of Ramsey Lewis. Or the proto-funk of Erwin Halletz "Das Stundenhotel Von St. Pauli" -- a tight soundtrack groover clearly inspired by James Brown. Or the elegantly sweeping "Naturally Stoned" by Helmut Zacharias with more than a trace of a brilliant John Barry arrangement, and the Blood Sweat & Tears-inspired "Molotow Cocktail Party" by Vivi Bach & Dietmar Schönherr. The guys behind these productions were usually slick jazz players and studio musicians from the tightest orchestras of the country. Somehow these middle-aged men knew how to move the Kraut and adapt their skills to the swinging sixties. The In-Kraut was compiled and annotated by Stefan Kassel and Frank Jastfelder who also compiled two acclaimed Lalo Schifrin anthologies, several volumes of Universal's Get Easy! series, the Mad Mad World Of Soundtracks compilations, and retrospectives of the work of Gary McFarland, Horst Jankowski, Lee Hazlewood and other cool cats. 2005.
Customer Reviews:
Wunderbar! .......2007-01-05
A remarkably high ratio of hits to misses on this compilation -- sehr komische from start to finish, plus some impressively funky rhythm sections. (Ersatz funk courtesy of middle-aged German guys who I'd guess were steeped in jazz, but that's part of the charm of this music.)
Just a few highlights: Hildegard Knef sounding like the definitive Teutonic drag queen on the opening track (I know she's an actual woman, but just see if she doesn't sound like the inspiration for "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"); the funniest Stones cover ever; and some great psychedelic guitar on "Undergroovin'," from an obscure early movie by Hans-Jurgen Syberberg, the ultimate high-brow, braniac director. (Who knew he had the funk in him?)
In contrast to most compilations of this genre, the booklet is not only stylin' but intelligently written and well translated. The booklet also includes the original 45 or LP covers for each track, adding to the overall mood of kitschy fun. Hier finden Sie viel Spass!
Review from Modculture.......2005-11-11
An amazing selection of German grooves from the 60s through to the early 70s.
There's so many albums you wait an age for which inevitably let you down, then albums come from nowhere and knock you out. Such is the case with 'The In-Kraut', appropriately sub-titled 'Hip Shaking Grooves Made In Germany 1966-1974'.
When you think of German music past, it's hard to get past Kraftwerk and hair rock. But like all cultures, if you go past the obvious and scrape the surface, there's some great stuff hidden down below. I first heard album opener 'From Here On It Got Rough' by Hildegard Knef on the radio, prompting me to seek out this collection. Like Nico does northern - incredibly quirky and catchy and a sign of things to come. Some tracks are cool and funky variations of the big band sound, like Guenter Noris' 'Gemini' which operates in Ramsey Lewis territory and Fredy Brock's 'Beat It', featuring a class JB style rhythm section. Best topping those is Orchester Helmuth Brandenburg's 'Moving Out', not a far cry from the Starsky and Hutch theme! There's the annoyingly catchy 'Marihuana Mantra' with its driving guitar and chant-like chorus or the fuzz-pop of Bill Ramsey's 'An Unknown Quantity'. And check out the breezy 60s pop of Marianne Mendt's 'Wie A Glock'n' or the more sleazy 'Pussy Baby' by Bill Lawrence. Talking of 60s pop, I love Heidi Bruehl's 'Berlin' - almost like a soundtrack piece, complete with great psych guitar solo (rumoured to be from Jimmy Page!). And for a piece of driving hammond, The Boots' 'Alexander' hits the spot.
And there's tracks that have already become sought-after collectors' grooves. Check out 'Why Don't You Play The Organ, Man' by Memphis Black - a monster funk piece. And feel the groove on the opening of 'Sunday Love Affair' by Orchester Frank Pleyer. More mainstream funk comes courtesy of Erwin Halletz, with 'Das Stundenhotel Von St Pauli' - a blue movie soundtrack inevitably! A track that has already been lifted wholesale is 'Bodybuilding' by Orchester Werner Mueller - re-worked by Bentley Rhythm Ace into a hit single a few years back. And no album of this nature would be complete without a bonkers covers version - enter Peter Thomas with his early synth and brass take on 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'.
20 tracks - no filler and one of the best booklets I've had the pleasure to read in a long time. A fantastic trip through the German underground of the 60s and early 70s and an album I just can't recommend enough.
REVIEW FROM IGLOO MAGAZINE.......2005-11-10
Tight as hot pants on Pam Grier. Smokin. Slick. Mod. And as advertised, groovy as a corrugated roof, shaking hips like a cronked belly-dancer: The In-Kraut is all that and a bag of buds.
Encompassing some of the best of the late sixties and early seventies, it's a raunchy Deutsche gumbo: smooth Bacharach bounces that even Burt would envy, a psychedelic anthem extolling the joys of marihuana, chicks sounding like Nancy Sinatra doing Dietrich, and even a dirty back-beat soul jam that Bernard Purdie and Jimmy Smith couldn't do more funky.
This is a treasure trove of rarities. It makes Rhino releases seem like K-Tel. Tunes from the musty, dusty days of a still divided country that evince American influences, but also show off their own distinct flavors. And they're tasty.
The variety is fantastic. Lounge, high-camp, rock, soundscape, jazz - each tune brings something new and fab to the mix. It's hard to imagine a mélange like this coming to a gel. But these are jelly and jam, hot sauce and jalapeños: sweet as hominy grits and honey one moment, sultry as a silk garter the next. Lord Jesus, this disc is so good it's driven me to more colloquialisms than Dan Rather on election night.
So I'll end my review with just one more final, no jive comment: Get yourself to the record store now and buy this collection. Hell, buy 2. It'll make the perfect Christmas present.

A Very Worthy follow-up.......2006-12-01
I was going to write a review, but the first reviewer covered that ground more than capably. I find the cover of "Mas Que Nada" out of place, but the sampler very much has the strength and energy of Volume One of this series, and both volumes should be considered extremely strong samplers overall - very sexy, very energetic, exceptionally recorded. Okay, in one track in Volume Two, the female wordless vocalist is kind of weak and probably ought to have been either mixed down, or vocally processed, or both. Hildegard Knef returns with a great track that has almost a smart, beatnick poetry feel. Max Greger doesn't appear here but some of his finest fellow travelers, such as Fredy Brock, do. Both In-Kraut volumes definitely survive repeat listenings, and can fire up any party crowd not jaded against music that doesn't REEK. Marina Records: You guys RULE!
FROM THE UPPERS ORGANIZATION.......2006-11-17
This one hasn't left my CD player yet! It's all a "hit" and not a "miss". The upbeat "Swinging London" by the Hazy Osterwald Jet Set is a standout. The band shouting out London landmarks and addresses of "The Swingin' City" over a KPM styled groove. Mary Roos offers a take of the Jorge Ben penned Sergio Mendes hit "Mas Que Nada" - here in German as "Blauer Montag" (Blue Monday). The legendary James Last provides a number titled "Soul March". It's uptempo, full and well produced with a nice touch of flanging to give it that "sky-ing" effect. Trippy! My fave of the disc is by an attractive gal named Hildegard Knef. In her slightly accented English she talks deadpan over a light jazzy groove on "Holiday Time". It's way out - try to imagine Nico pretending to be a dominatrix reading news headlines and you've got the drift. Dieter Reith's brilliant funky Hammond n horns "No No No" reminds me of Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames take on Earl Van Dyke's "Soul Stomp". No wonder it's culled from an album entitled "Hammond Explosion". The organ and sitar groove of Carlos Fendeira on "Gimmi Moro" is a wild mix that really works and sounds like a deleted cut from the Vampyros Lesbos film soundtrack! "Moon Mission" by Kai Rautenberg & Orchester Juergen Ehlers is a fuzz guitar vs. organ duel that is definitely my favorite instro excursion on the disc. If horns and Hammonds are your thing you need The In-Kraut Vol. 2 for your next soirre, gig, love-in et al.

Customer Reviews:
Amon Duul II - 'Made In Germany' (Garden Of Delights).......2005-01-30
Nice 2004 reissue.Originally released in 1975,I've always thought this lp/CD to be a compilation effort.Turns out it's actually meant to be sort of a rock opera.'Made...' does have the band stepping in a somewhat different direction.Sort of like 'theatrical kraut',if you would. As for the tunes,I liked the rocking "Wir Wollen",the acidic guitar on "SM II Peng" and "Elevators Meet Whispering","King's Chocolate Waltz","Mr.Kraut Jinx",the trippin' "Three Eyed Overture" and the somewhat Dylan-like "Emigrant Song".Thought that a couple of the tracks here managed to capture the early classic ADII sound, vibe and spirit, like "Loosely Girls" with a good sax solo,"Top Of The Mud" and "Gala Gnome"(stunning guitar work).Renate Knaup's hot female vocals shine on "Metropolis","Blue Grotto" and "Wide Angle".Two versions of 'Made In Germany' is out and in circulation. This disc,is of course the one with twenty songs with a duration of 69:51.The other I believe has twelve.Comes with a lavish 28-page booklet with song lyrics and some beautiful Amon Duul II artwork.Recommended.
Amon Düül II - Made In Germany.......2000-10-15
Like it or not, Amon Düül II's 1975 German Rock Opera-esque album draws a resemblance to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (In my case, I like it). With interludes about every song or two sythesizers loop strange sounds simlilar to what Pink Floyd did in their 1973 release. Drawing on Germany's history, AD2 jam out some decent heavy guitar-riffs and surprising melodic & often harmonic vocal lines. Two songs in particular, 'Ludwig' and 'Blue Grotto' deal with the insane Bavarian King, Ludwig and how one of the band's singers, Renate Knaup, is fascinated by his going. If I might add here, madness is a the basic theme in PF's Dark Side of the Moon. Despite themes of insanity, war and decadence, this album is anything but depressing. On the contrary, the band, when dealing with the Fascist era of German history, takes a somewhat humorous approach to Adolf Hitler in a mock interview in which a radio disk jockey interviews the infamous dictator and pokes fun at him. Of the 19-or-so tunes on this album (both lyrical and instrumental), the two most memorable pieces would probably be 'La Krautoma', a 6+ minute, rocked-up, instrumental version of folk song, 'La Paloma', and 'Loosey Girls', a song about the decadent era of the 1930's which sounds like Barry Manilow meets Pink Floyd's 1971 album, Meddle. If you like the Pink Floyd of the early '70's, Made In Germany is certainly worth the while.

GREAT... AGAIN.......2003-10-21
Axel Rudi Pell delivers great album after great album... Is one of those musicians that are so solid that I've never heard a record from him that is not good. This 1995 live album is great, a little short in my point of view (could easily have been a double CD)but still great. The set list includes most of Axel Rudi Pell's best songs to that date, along with a new track composed exclusively for that record. No need to say that Axel Rudi Pell's guitar work sounds amazing like always(In my opinion, he's better than Malmsteen, got more heart). Special mention to the vocal work by Jeff Scot Soto who is one of the best singers nowadays. One of the best live albums I've heard.
Good vocals, good guitars.......1998-09-14
This album is very hot, with good old heavy metal. Good recording quality and really a great show.

A Sign Of The Times.......2006-08-19
A naked old man with his horn hanging out? More like a seasoned veteran comfortable with himself and his legacy. Late 40's is NOT old; it's a transition. Contrary to what the previous reviewer stated, this album IS a sign of the times and a sign that Herb was 'with it'. Granted, the glory days of the TJB were in the past, but Herb just kept on trackin'. Jazz, in all it's many forms, was boldly taking a foothold in mainstream awareness and Herb Alpert was leading the vanguard. The tracks on this album? I'll mention only two; I would critique the other tracks, but I'm afraid the only beer I use is in a glass, and my grass is in the yard where it belongs. I don't need to be stoned to get off on this album.
Red Hot IS hot, in the fusion of Jazz and the soon to be dead disco. It fit in for the 80's, it moved and it grooved. I could have done without some of the 'falso basso' voices in the mix, though. And what the previous reviewer stated with the title of Oriental Lady, come on! Yeah, not PC for 2006, but we're talkin' the '80's here. Would you have the title changed? The song's a tribute, not a put down. You need to enter rehab, pal.
If you're a fan, you WILL enjoy the album. It's Herb where 20+ years of talent, taste and experience meant him to be. Listen fried or listen clear. Either way, Herb's blowing his own horn for you. I'm giving it 4 stars because the mix could have been clearer. But that can be fixed.
