Smokin' Horns.......2004-04-24
Wow - this band is smokin' The trumpeter has a great funky groove and is baked up by a great rhythm section. It does not hurt that the sax player is hot too!!!
Highly recommended.
Incredible Sound!!!.......2002-02-28
Very few CDs can keep listening through twelve tracks, but Boogie Stop Shuffle is only surpassed by the band live! From the horns in the beginning leading directly into an incredible drumbeat, the East Coast Funk hasn't left my car's CD player since I received it from Amazon three weeks ago!

I had searched high and low for a CD by this group and I am pleased that I found it. An excellent selection of music. I was not disapointed! There sound is reminiscent of Blood Sweat and Tears, a group that I have always appreciated. Fine musicians all around!

A lot of fun..........2001-07-12
We saw/heard these guys at First Night Boston in 1998, I think. They were awesome live. After that show, we got copies of Dakini and Horns in the House and really liked them. Of course, we jumped on 4:20 in the Land of Plenty. Favorites include "Hey Ramon", "Ensenada" and "Murder on the Bayou". Really would love to have more instumentals from them. Great change from pop music! No professional critique from me, as I am neither a musician nor a die-hard blues/funk/jazz aficionado. We just thought they had a great sound...love driving down the road with the windows down and these tunes blaring.
COOL!.......1999-10-05
That's COOL! Funky and sophisticated sense that they have....especially the bass. When you'll listen to this CD, you'll find the voice in your body & soul saying "Pow!!!". Get it and try it ASAP.
excellent.......1999-06-23
Best horns I've heard since Chicago. Hot upbeat tunes!!
This CD rocks! The music is powerful & the lyrics are fresh........1999-06-12
Every song on this CD is awesome. You can't say that about many artists. You have to see these guys live to fully appreciate their talent. Buy this CD, you won't be disappointed....

Excellent collection of Satyricons greatest songs!!!.......2002-12-07
Wow! This is an excellent "Best of"compilation. They couldn't have chosen a better list of songs. This cd starts out with the multi-hard track called "Filthgrinder", from the record Rebel Extravaganza, and ends this cd with a little taste of the 5th album "Volcano". If somoene just got into Black metal or into Satyricon, i suggest that you should buy this, and maybe buy the other records later.

Customer Reviews:
An Overture of Thought.......2003-10-10
Immediately taken in the embrace of Black Moon Overture - a stunning and dramatic symphonic opener - you will soon realize the greatness that is soon to come ... Nokturnal Mortum's Goat Horns album.
After the five minute intro of symphonic glory, you are taken by the mighty roar of Black Metal ripping through your speakers ... a roar only Nokturnal Mortum can create. Kuyaviya kicks the album off with symphonic layers and majestic guitars. Knjaz's vocals are wonderful as usual and the overall atmosphere of the music screams Nokturnal Mortum. Ancient Pagan landscapes and moonlit nights are all thoughts that Nokturnal Mortum can and will portray within the atmosphere and embrace of their music.
Veles' Scroll is often considered the "epic" of the album clocking in at about 12 minutes. Kicking right off, the song travels into a symphonic Black Metal paradise eventually ending with a gentle yet haunting piano melody to close the opus.
Once all is said and done, you are left to relax to the final track of the album: Eternal Circle. Like the intro, this is a majestic and symphonic keyboard piece that is some of the best you will hear in Black Metal. Being romantic, mysterious and somber you are only left speechless after listening to one of Black Metal's many great moments.

Album Description
Nokturnal Mortum dwells in one of the darkest and forsaken realms of the underground. Emanating from Ukraine they have become legends in their ancient lands and are now ready to sweep the rest of us. In seven opuses they feature beauty in its darkest and most extreme form. What can be described as lunar black metal they take on a majestic journey that combines devastating metal, with folklore and classical elements. An amalgam of pagan and eerie melodies this is a legendary epic; a grandiose masterpiece that only Nokturnal Mortum can deliver in what is wickedly entitled "Goat Horns" ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: The story began on 31/12/91 with the birth of the band Suppuration (Unholy Death Metal) with main members being Knjaz Varggoth, Munruthel & Xaarquath. Their first release was "Ecclesiastical Blasphemy" in 1992, and was distributed by Shiver Records in Belgium. After Sataroth joined the band in '92 as vocalist they recorded "Unspeakable Journey Into Subconscious World" ('93). In April '93 Wortherax (guitar) joined the band and the following month they recorded "Cosmic Flight Around Astralspher". The demo was supposed to be out as 7" EP on The Final Holocaust Records, but the label collapsed and Suppuration died in the summer of the same year. Still, as of Autumn '93 there was a new band Crystaline Darkness (Black Metal) in place. Line-up included Knjaz Varggoth - voc/guit, Karpath - guit. & Munruthel - drums. Having recorded the "Mi Agama Khaz Mifisto" demo the band negotiated with View Beyond Records (Czechia). Then in 1994 former Suppuration members got together and recorded the "Twilightfall" demo under a new name which was finally set as Nokturnal Mortum. In the end of '94-early'95 the legendary "Lunar Poetry" demo was created and recorded. The MC was released in Spring'96 by MetalAgen Records. Shortly after release Wortherax left and was replaced by Karpath and Saturious, as a second keyboard player. In the summer'96 the second album "Goat Horns" was recorded (released in Spring'97 by MetalAgen on MC). In December of the same year, "Return Of The Vampire Lord" EP was recorded. It included brand new title song + 2 songs of Crystaline Darkness ("Mi Agama 'haz Mifisto", "Crystaline Darkness"). This EP was originally to be released by MetalAgen Records as a split-MC with Lucifugum (Ukraine) but the band cut short any relations with the label. In 1997, Nokturnal Mortum recorded "To The Gates Of Blasphemous Fire" album and "Marble Moon" EP that included the Ukrainian folk song "Lastivka". At the same time the band signed with The End Records (USA) and agreed to release all Nokturnal Mortum albums on CDs. The first release was "Goat Horns" on March 31, 1998. The new album "To The Gates Of Blasphemous Fire" is to be released March 1, 1999!
Customer Reviews:
Incomparable!!!.......2007-02-19
This album is the quintessential symphonic black metal recording, far surpassing any efforts from better-known competitors, excluding Emperor's 'In the Nightside Eclipse.' Every composition contained here is absolute genius!
The songs are benefitted greatly by the cold production, which acts as testimony to the atavistic nature of the album's content and intention. The limited production is also genuine, as this album was recorded in 1996 it presents a slightly muffled magick that has never been imitated successfully by any now-pathetic band on latest releases(Satyricon, awful-Xasthur, etc.). The faking of bad production in hopes of maintaining legitimacy is bloody stupid. A critique must be made in regards to the quiet guitar volume, as some of the guitar work is often over-shadowed by the keyboards. A re-mastering and re-mixing of this album could provide improvement in the aforementioned area, but intensity is often sacrificed by such efforts (think Stormblast), so it is best to just leave it be. My advice is to get intoxicated on something, sit outside in the woods, turn up the volume, and lose yourself in the power of the album. However if you must skip through the album, 'Veles' Scrolls' and the title track are in my opinion the finest of all the album's brilliant tracks.
It should also be recognised that this album is not identical to those interpretations made by influential Norwegian black metal artists, but rather an eastern European expression of the same atavistic heathen fury. A few moments of the album even venture into slavonic folk, which was and remains a welcome shift from the grandiose orchestral keyboard work which dominates black metal records of the time. The folk experimentation also reveals an impetuous sense of native cultural pride held by the composers, which could be ridiculously labelled as ignominious by those critics eager to award a classification of 'NSBM' to any patriotic band. If some listeners condemn this band for their controversial socio-political involvement and positions, then those listeners probably should not be listening to black metal. Black metal is intended for a specific section of people, and many of those people find identity in or flirt with nationalism/Nazism/paganism/Satanism, which are engaged in ubiquitous conflict with the values of the majority population. Black metal is intended for the extreme person, not the weak and timid. If a listener cannot grant Nokturnal Mortum full-credit for their masterpiece due to the band's convictions, then that listener is the one who is discriminating effectively, not the band. For however extreme the band's exclusive viewpoints be, their albums are on the market available for anyone to interpret.
oi vei! too bad they are nazis!.......2006-10-13
Indeed, i loved their music from moment one, its so black, so devilish, so mischivious. This album came together nicely. The thing is this guys are nazis and think none outside of their rubbish country is ready or even deserves a live concert, hey, they said it in an interview, not me. So, yea, this guys are pricks, they make good music, so its a give and take situation, oh well, they get 3 stars from me, sorry, nazis can't get more than 3 stars.....
album of a lifetime.......2006-04-09
This is one of those CD's. One that when you hear it you realize...this is something you have yearned to hear all your life. I put it in my top ten Black Metal CD's of all time! BUY IT NOW!!!
One Of The Best Albums Ever Made.......2005-09-25
I downloaded the song Kolyada, and that drew me into this wonderful and amazing band. You may have heard that these guys are Nazis or whatever, but i dont know or care anything about that. Whatever they believe doesnt take away from the fact that this is perfection in musical form.
The bass is sick, the drums are amazing and the keyboards are the greatest you will ever hear. The guitar sound is kind of played down, but the keyboards and bass are the dominating factors of the album anwyay.
Great instruments, epic songs, what more do you need? Every track is a winner. This cd should be mandatory in any music fans collection!
I Am Absolutely Speechless..........2005-03-13
Nokturnal Mortum... Overhyped Nazi junk, or absolutely genius symphonic/folk black metal? I'll take the latter choice, personally.
Integrating their bloodline's pride into their music, NM make use of TWO (yes, two) keyboards throughout the album with enchanting string passages, folkish melodies, and tumbling pianos and pizzacato strings. Much, if not all, of the album is dominated by keyboards. BM purists may scoff at this and dismiss NM as a CoF rip-off with a Nazi gimmick. But this masterpiece surpassed all of my expectations. I have never heard such emotion put into audio, alongside Burzum, Ildjarn, and select others. Varrgoth's slighty distorted and anguished rasps let the listener envision ancient Pagan rituals on a dark summer night ages ago. The guitars don't play a huge role here, but use a tasteful distortion, and often back the keyboards with strong and almost catchy melodies. The musicianship is simply superb, especially with the highly skilled keyboardists, steady guitars, and the techno-like pulsating of the drum machine's bass drum. (Actually, they use an electronic drum set, but it's close enough.)
The atmosphere here is absolutely indescribable. The guitars and keys fade in and out and weave beautiful melodies that will suck you straight into the music. A tranquil and magical atmosphere permeates the entire record, especially on the title and the closing intrumental, "Eternal Circle". Acoustic guitars are often hidden behind all the patterns, creating somewhat of an ambience coupled with the extravagant keyboard work.
All the songs are amazing, but the high points come with the epic title track, and by far the 11-minute novel-like song "Veles' Scrolls", which has a mind-biggling song structure, and shows that the band probably spent months, if not years composing. Truly beautiful, its moods change, but remains tranquil in true NM style. All songs use layered keyboards to acherive the ultimate connection emotionally with the listener, and creates a suttle mood.
I would highly reccommend this to fans of bands like Summoning, Agalloch, Ulver, Burzum, or even older Dimmu Borgir material. This is without a doubt one of my favorite CD's ever. This is symphonic black metal at its peak. Amazing.
