Better than studio.......2006-07-20
Really like this album, and it sounds so much better than their studio songs. Everything is just as clear on the album but certain things like the guitar are accented more and there is a much more powerful sound. This is why I love Live albums, and Royal Hunt reminded me of that. The vocalist (I believe it was DC Cooper at this time, correct me if I'm wrong) is very charismatic and a great vocalist. But the best part was when they sang "Kingdom Dark" (Is that the name of the song?). That was a real surprise since I didn't expect it to be on their setlist, and while I didn't enjoy the song on the studio album, it sounded better here.
Excellent live collection........2002-08-30
Royal Hunt's 2-disc release Double Live in Japan is a live retrospective of the band's time with vocalist DC Cooper. Recorded before the band fired the amazing vocalist, this double album is the only chance most of us ever had to hear what Royal Hunt with DC sounded like live. DC's voice is so clear and powerful live, and has this emotion that the studio discs just don't catch. He really shines when performing.
The first disc is a collection of songs that were previously available on the band's previous live release, the import-only 1996. The second disc, also previously released, is the band's Paradox - Closing the Chapter album, a live performance of the band's Paradox album in its entirety. The first CD is the better of the two, as it features songs from the band's first three studio albums. Hearing DC sing songs from the albums the band made prior to his joining them is just a real treat. They perform a great mix of material from Land of Broken Hearts, Clown in the Mirror, and my favorite album - Moving Target. The Paradox disc, while still a great live performance, lacks the variety and crowd interaction that was present on disc 1. It's still great stuff, and classic DC Cooper; just not as exciting as the first disc.
Given that the material on Double Live in Japan was already available, at least overseas, I have to assume that this package was intended for American fans that wouldn't typically be able to acquire the earlier import versions. Casual fans should be pleased with this release, but die-hard Royal Hunt or DC Cooper fans owe it to themselves to seek out the 1996 live album to get the best possible live performance.
Hard to believe; absolutely amazing.......2001-10-24
As I found myself growing up, I came to realize that live recordings(cassette, record, even CD)never appealed to me. If it wasn't the studio version, my judgement on the recording was usually negative. Royal Hunt has shown me what a fool I have actually been.
On this double live CD, one cannot debate the fact that this group of musicians were meant to work together. From the opening of 'Flight' to the final track on disc two, 'It's Over', I found
myself shocked at how clear and detailed this music is to the studio versions on their previous albums, 'Paradox' and 'Moving
Target'. D.C.Cooper has never earned the criticism that was sent his way; his voice is mesmerizing and at the same time, able to command and blend in perfectly with Andre Anderson's haunting keyboard arrangements. And although at times I would
like to compare this band with Yngwie Malmsteen's(whom I have
developed much respect for in the past), Royal Hunt seems to
capture more of a mood and intensity that Yngwie misses occasionally. The overall effect of this recording(and Royal Hunt's two previous albums 'Paradox' and 'Moving Target') is pure power, hope, and an emotional force which cannot be explained.
It saddens me to hear about D.C.Cooper leaving the band, but it makes listening to these CD's all that much better. It also disappoints me that we have to listen to Royal Hunt in Japan when they could probably shame the 'American music scene' swiftly playing live here.
If you're ready for real music again, and live music at that,
pick up this rare treasure. Progressive metal has a new leader..
Better Live than studio.......2000-05-03
Royal Hunt has produced a great live cd here, along with Porcupine Tree's Coma Divine, the best live rock available on disk..I hope people get a chance to hear this remarkable group..Rock is alive and well ,on this disk...Symphonic progressive rock, Heavy and beautiful it's all good.

Kimocks creates sound from outside the box.......2006-02-09
I've been following Steve since I first heard Zero Blues by the way get it ,its worthy!,I l like the sound of this c/d because not only does it blow doors over alot of the other c/ds he's done but just about every track sounds good, has his trademark liquid~Chimey guitar meltdown that expands and periates beautifully in mid air is evident on each and every track,he's done his homework,he always uses fresh strings at each show, and he seeks out the latest cleanest sounding gear to work with, form strings to tube amps, hes been in relixs more times than I can count, just on his knowledge of elcectronics, gears what sound compliment which guitars, his explorer guitar is sex on the ears,I mean it,seek out steve's music:Zero,Steve Kimock band,KVHW,Marajuina JazzBand,he's played with Phil and Friends,see:FLOK.ORG and KIMOCK.COM and catch the WAVE Peace Larry. P.S. Listen to song: Long form part 1 SwEEEEEET!!!

Great CD!!!! Steve's guitar playing ability is amazing. I recommend that anyone who's not heard this band check it out, and purchase this CD!
a mixed bag that makes sense.......2003-05-27
Kimock's music can be listened to in many ways: there's always enough of a groove to dance to, ambience to space out/meditate to, with always thoughtful and creative arrangemnts and improvisation for more analytical listeners. Kimock is a master at combining some 'spacey' tones and ideas with clear structures that keep his long pieces from ever becoming 'run-on'. With possibly the best rythm section in any rock-related organization, and Kimock himself adept at a wide variety of styles, this cd is a necessity.
Deep music for serious music afficionados.......2003-02-27
East Meets West is for patient listeners who appreciate a truly good composer. Steve Kimock is much more than just a flashy lead guitar man. He is a legitimate composer who knows how to write an actual 15-20 minute guitar concerto, without repeating himself more than is absolutely necessary to establish a melody. Be forewarned that not many of these songs jump right out of the starting block with blazing speed and catchy intros. You have to sit back and let the songs run their course before they really start building up. But all of this is a good thing, because the songs do in fact build up to ultra-dramatic highs that can only be created through contrasts of hushed dynamics and high peaks. Steve Kimock's other live CD, Live in Colorado, might even be better. You might have to go to the actual band's website to get it.
