Album Description

"Dogs Of War was in our opinion, our first move back to a heavier style after Solid Ball Of Rock and Forever Free. The album did have its problems, mostly with Graham Oliver, so much so that Rainer Haensel replaced his guitar parts in the studio. The album was co produced and engineered by Kalle Trapp, Rainer and myself and I think Kalle got a fantastic sound and in retrospect we should have done Forever Free with Kalle. I think we had some great times with that partnership, the last concert Graham Oliver did was Bremen Aladin on the 31st of December 1994 New Years Eve. The Dogs Of War Tour was the first tour with Douglas Scarratt, who was the replacement for Graham Oliver. It was also a return to using Paul Gregory on the album artwork, you may notice one of the four horseman of the apocalypse is an Indian Warrior, we did this as a surprise for Rainer because he bred paint horses. Paul is the artist who did the Crusader cover and many more after this. I think the album was a milestone in our career because it was a fresher and heavier sounding album. I hope everybody likes the re-release and crank it up!" (Biff Byford 2005)

A Perfect Blend!.......2007-01-15

Despite being overshadowed by Solid Ball of Rock and Unleash the Beast, Dogs of War remains one of my favourite albums. The perfect blend between the classic hard rock and heavy metal sound Saxon have always wavered between. The songs Dogs of War and The Great White Buffalo show Saxon are as capable as Iron Maiden of powering out historically inspired metal epics when at their best.

Burning Wheels, Big Twin Rolling, Hold On and Demolition Alley are classic rock tracks - reminiscent of Australian pub rockers AC/DC and The Angels. For 1995 this is brilliant stuff, and i wish more bands would write this sort of material! The only songs i skip are Don't Worry, because its just weak, and Walking Through Tokyo, which is good but a little uninteresting.

Saxon took on a full on, heavy metal sound after this album, so this is the perfect album to close the band's classic rock era. Recommended.

Classic metal amidst the grunge.......2006-09-06

If Iron Maiden and Def Leppard were the two most successful bands to come out of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal in the late '70's and early '80's, a great time for real metal fans, then Saxon probably is the most underrated, at least in the US.
Maiden has hung tough, thanks to a ferocious following, and Def Leppard ceased to be metal after their first two albums. Saxon has retained enough of a primarily European audience to remain active to this day. Metal is a strange beast - the music is the most confining in all of rock, but those who excel enjoy life spans that far exceed most any other genre.
Saxon's reissue of 1995's "Dogs Of War" defiantly retains the classic metal sound they helped forge, thanks in part to being influenced by Judas Priest and Thin Lizzy, to name a few seminal metal bands. Biff Byford's vocals and lyrics remain the cornerstone of the Saxon sound, but his voice has aged noticeably to more of a boozy Bon Scott style tone, especially on "Big Twin Rolling".
The guitars are sharp and thankfully have not copped out to the dropped "D" grunge tuning that took over damn near every heavy band in the '90's. The title track should be plenty heavy enough for anybody, and I must admit it takes balls to record a very '80's sounding pop-metal tune on "Hold On."
"Great White Buffalo" and "Walking Through Tokyo" show how bands weren't afraid to stretch their creative wings at one time, and bully for Saxon for doing it.
All in all, "Dogs Of War" is a fine latter day effort from a band that deserves much more credit than they've received over the years.

good album with a couple dogs.......2006-02-26

As Byford's review says, this is a move back to the more straight ahead heavier Saxon sound. But it retains a few more "melodic" songs as I guess they or their label had not totally given up trying to be a top 40 metal act. Which is weird because by 1995 grunge had taken over rock radio, in America at least.
The first song, Dogs of War, is a good opener and has some of the most groove for any Saxon song. Then a classic Saxon song for number two. Then song three. It's called Don't Worry. It should have been called Don't Play This Song. It's a horrible attempt, I guess, at a ballad but it never hits the mark in my book. After that the album evens out although Demolition alley is pretty uneven and one I'll probably skip over. Walking Through Tokyo is a very Saxonish anthem, a great song.
Overall I'd give this only 3.5 stars as they were'nt quite back to just being the straight ahead denim and leather Saxon we want them to be. Some good songs but with some to avoid.

Not what you might expect from this great singer.......2007-07-11

War Dogs is definitely not the kind of album you'd expect from David Glen Eisley, the voice of such bands as Giuffria, Dirty White Boy, and Stream. Instead of the melodic rock he's best known for, Eisley's War Dogs album hardly qualifies as rock at all. It's a very tranquil concept album about (of all things) the service animals that assist soldiers. Like I said, not quite what you'd expect.

Still, it's an album worth checking out. I love Eisley's voice, and to hear him in such a mellow setting (picture DGE doing Chris Isaak ballads over Braveheart: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack music) was very interesting. He obviously has some passion for the subject matter, and that comes through in his singing. It's not an album I play all that often (it probably gets one spin for every 10 times I play Lost Tapes), but it's great when I need a change of pace.

If you're a serious DGE fan, you'll want to check this out. Just don't expect another Silk and Steel.

Decent comeback from several poor albums.......2005-10-14

Dogs of War could be said to be the album that saved their fans from leaving them for good, after so many albums were released so close together with such poor performance. It started their slow rise with other great albums such as Unleash the Beast and Lionheart and shows what the new Saxon could truly do.
The first song, and the title song "Dogs of War" is what Saxon is all about, the intro drums and guitar rifts are heavy, hard and just what is needed to start off the album.
The second song "Burning Wheels" follows the first song in terms of excelence, but with a very much different path of music style, and is a reminder of their classic stuff from "Wheels of Steel" and "Strong Arm of the Law"
After these songs however, the tracks become less great with each one, "Yesterdays Gone" is a good end song but the others have already stopped its chances of being a perfect album.
If you are new to saxon then i would not recommend this album, because you will think that this is all they are made of. If you can get the song "Dogs of War" then you are set, but the others do not seem worth it.
I would recommend either their next album "Unleash the Beast" or any one of their first five. The only reason i gave it 4 stars is just because of the song "Dogs of War", it is now one of my favourite Saxon songs.

Slightly better than previous records.......2004-07-13

This is surely an improvement for SAXON, after albums like the obnoxious ROCK THE NATIONS, FOREVER FREE and SOLID BALLS OF ROCK. Anyway, we still can hear glimpses of utterly awful and mean pop metal songs like "Hold On". On the positive side, SAXON tried a lot of differente ideas here. Some worked, some not. It's an album worth to have, if you're a Saxon fan.

Not Their Best But..........2003-08-17

...there are a few gems. some i consider are saxon's best songs on this release. let's take a closer look:

dog of war: title track. hard punching, a true saxon classic. should be considered one of their best efforts.

burning wheels: above average. plenty of kick, nice guitar work

don' worry: doobie/allman brothers mix?? repeatitive chorus lines, biff sounds like he's singing through is nasal passages. not one of their best songs.

big twin rolling: is good for about 3 minutes, then it gets repeatitive. needs to be edited/shorter

hold on: this song is proof why saxon should never explore their feminine side (and have it put on vinyl). yuck!

the great white buffalo: yes!! now this is the saxon i remember in high school, when listening to wheels of steel, the eagle has landed, etc. GWB should be considered one of their best efforts. i really enjoy the live version of this song on the eagle has landed part 2.

demolition alley: not bad, not bad at all. nice pace on this tune. not their greatest, but would definitely find a spot on a cd boxed set if i were moderator...

walking through tokyo: decent. not a favorite of mine, but nice guitar work from graham and paul makes up for the rather simplistic main riff of the song

give it all away: reaching for the american market with this one? where's my remote...

yesterday's gone: yes!! now this song has some kick and plenty of crunch!! although biff sounds like klaus meine, going for a kinder sounding voice to attract the ladies perhaps: it still doesn't deter this song from being one that deserves a redo with the new lineup of players in Saxon's current arsenal. i'd love to hear biff sing this one like biff!! rearrangement of the lyrics would be nice as well...nice ending track!

It has some punch!.......2002-11-20

1995's DOGS OF WAR is their best album since 1983's POWER AND THE GLORY. It runs close with 1984's CRUSADER. The only album that got closer to it is their recent release, KILLING GROUND. Both 1997's UNLEASH THE BEAST and 1999's METALHEAD are inferior to DOGS OF WAR.

Biff has the help of drummer GLockler in writing the lyrics (Glockler is no longer in the band, since after UNLEASH THE BEAST- Fritz Randow is ints place). Also, this is the last alum featuring founding member guitarrist Graham Oliver. It's such a shame that Oliver, ex-bassits Steve Dawson and drummer Pete Gill would come to fight bitterly against Biff and Paul Quinn for the right of using the name SAXON!!

After trying to change their sound a lot for the American market, and obtaining a nule result, SAXON at last decided to go back to form: straigh heavy metal, but THEIR kind of heavy metal> British, original, muscular, strong.

DOGS OF WAR is a pleasant surprise. It's well crafted, well produced (by Bii and Ransel Hainer). It only has one sadreminiscence of their utterly commercial period back in the middle eighties, the commercial pop metal song "Hold on". But, due to the sheer quality of the alum, this mistep is easily forgotten!
