5 out of 5 stars A milestone in the Death Metal world..........2006-06-05

1989, the year of many great Metal albums, Beneath The Remains, The Years of Decay, Practice What You Preach, Fabulous Disaster, Slowly We Rot...you get the point, and this fits in that catagory of great Metal albums from that year.

This album is very fast and very raw, and very evil sounding too, love the production, sounds totally evil.

David Vincents vocals are different on this one, unlike the rest of Morbid Angel albums with Vincent, on this it's more of a thrashy rasp, not really a growl, wicked cool sounding.

Treys riffs and leads absolutely rule, all catchy, fast, and brutal, and the solos are out of this world.

Sandoval's drumming is superb, really fast, and hits every note.

The best songs on the album?...haha, ALL, yes ALL of them are classics, if you like old Sepultura, Obituary, and sorts, and haven't heard this, 2 words...BUY IT!!

5 out of 5 stars death metal milestone.......2006-06-04

This album is a milestone for death metal and is probably the greatest effort by Morbid Angel. The guitars a little bit soft on this CD and the solos are weak as far as sound is but it still displays the guitar work of master Trey Azagthoth. David Vincent's vocals sound very demonic and raspy growling in this CD compared to his more grave and deeper vocals which would be features in the next three records by Morbid Angel. All the songs on this CD are pure mayhem and speed up so fast and the blast beating is incredible! This is definitelty a must have for death metal fans~!

5 out of 5 stars Among the best death metal debut albums.......2006-04-05

This album came as quite a shock to me back in 1989 - when I was a fourteen-year-old metalhead. There was little at the time that could compare with it, wildly careening riffs provided by Trey Azagthoth and Richard Brunelle, the menacing rasp of David Vincent, and especially, the hyperactive pounding of Pete 'Commando' Sandoval. This was quite unlike anything I had heard before at the time, and it still stands as a classic and 'must-listen' today.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Blessed or Covenant.......2005-10-25

This album sounds as good to me today as it did when I first heard it about 15 years ago. Listening to it, I am reminded how far Death Metal has come. When this album was first released, the "growl" and "blast beat" were new inventions but have now come to characterize the genre as a whole. This is a must have album for anyone who likes Metal.

5 out of 5 stars Old school blasphemous metal.......2005-08-07

This album is quite possibly the greatest early death metal release. It characterizes all the stylistic trademarks of what was to come in the genre, but hadn't been done extensively yet. All the songs are great and have their own identity, making this an interesting listen. Tempo changes abound, the riffs are pure evil, and the solos are about as crazy as they come. David Vincent's vocals are great and Pete Sandoval's drumming is very fast. My only complaint is the production. Although remastered, it is still muddy, especially in the guitar area, and the solos are, in my opinion too low in the mix. This is the only downfall though. Every fan of death metal, or just metal in general, should own this.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Really Awesome.......2007-07-19

You have to give credit to Morbid Angel for their impact on the Florida death metal scene that rose in the late 80's, but you also have to give them credit for making albums that still amaze the listener, even after over fifteen years since they came out. "Altars of Madness" is Morbid Angel's first full-length, and this album is one hell of a ride through lyrics about the ancient ones and Satan, amazing guitar solos and thrashing riffs by Trey Azagthoth and Richard Brunelle, and everything else that made bands like Slayer and Metallica run for their lives. Dave Vincent's vocals are rather unique and hard to compare, and Pete Sandoval's drumming is excellent. This album deserves all the respect it gets. Believe the hype and purchase "Altars of Madness" if you want relentless vintage death metal.

5 out of 5 stars Morbid Angel's best.......2007-06-02

This album could easily fall into the genre of black metal.
Actually, Infernal do a cover of the song Bleed For The Devil, and it sounds awesome. It can be found on their Summon Forth The Beast EP. If you like Dark Funeral, you'll probably like Infernal, as there a members of Dark Funeral in Infernal, making the 2 bands sound just about the same. Cool bands though.
Anyway, Altars Of Madness is a must own cd for any true death/black metal fan. It is a classic masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars YOU MEAN I HAVE NOT _________ REVIEWED THIS ALREADY?!.......2007-03-21

I have had this album for a really long time, and I just reviewing it. Nevermind that ______.

ALong with SLayer and Venom, this was another band to form death metal the way it was today. Thanks to bands like this and Suffocation, bands like Nile and Crypopsy are here today, and real metal lives on and that ________ metalcore, and nu-metal will die.

Aside from the _________ lyrics (though it is far superior to any of the Deicide ______ out there), this is awesome music. Everything is awesome, but two people make this band awesome. Trey _______ Azargoth and Pete ______ Sandoval. Trey's riffs are insane (not to mention his solos), and Pete's blastbeats are also insane. It's hard to think that someone like that can drum for so long. ALong with Flo and the drummer from Dying Fetus, they really make the blastbeats insanely.

With Richard's backing up (keeping up the melody along with killer solos), and Dave's demon vocals. In Altars of Madness, his vocals are really ________ raspy, not unlike Chris Barnes of CC (if you odn't know who that is, why are you looking at this?). IT's one killer line-up.

The album revolves around showcasing the bands playing. IT's not boring, whatever M. Warren is smoking, I have no clue. Yes, it has melody. But enough ranting. IF you like death metal, thank devote yourself listens and let this grow on you. If you do, I'm telling you, it will ________ rock you.

5 out of 5 stars Classic death metal.......2007-02-14

This is definitely something for every fan of death metal. The music is great on many songs. Morbid Angel definitely put some originality into death metal with this debut. Morbid Angel is one of the few bands that does blast beats in a tasteful way, which is definitely apparent with the song Blasphemy.

A negative reviewer said this album is unnecessarily satanic. I agree. Satanic lyrics are dumb. I personally don't pay attention to the lyrics on this album nor most others, so I don't care.

5 out of 5 stars Let me just go ahead and get this over with..........2007-01-07

If you don't have this album, don't even think about calling yourself an elite death metal fan. Very brutal, technical, and fast, not to mention a classic. There isn't much else I can say that hasn't already been said. Make this your next purchase!

5 out of 5 stars This dilapidated "unreal" foundation is cleared away .......2006-10-07

Morbid Angel's message is about thinking for yourself. To be a force that loosens and helps to tear down the conditioned limiting paradigms which enslave mankind by blocking the realization, flow and manifestation of Spirit in their lives. To interrupt the mass hypnosis that hinders one's pursuit of their dreams and causes the illusion of separation from the Higher Self. To promote clarity and to quiet the clamoring of those treacherous ones who seem only to wish confusion and belittlement upon mankind by influencing us to willingly receive and find comfort in these shackles presented to us all by the falsifiers. To shine some light, which removes the shadows and illusions, so we all may reach the potential that is ours by birthright. And it's not about destroying those who try to manipulate for they are already their own worst enemy, but rather to first remove within ourselves the fear induced confusion which would give nourishment to their unskilled influences and ultimately give aid to those disconnected ones as to help free themselves from their own sufferings and "sin". Only once this dilapidated "unreal" foundation is cleared away can the individual witness the Affluence Of The Living Continuum and utilize the magic that is deep within each and everyone of us, always.

ALTARS OF MADNESS

"One man's insanity is another man's genius and from these altars of madness the heretic rejoices in things unseen."

After several years of experimenting and lineup changes all was finally in place for our first record. Altars Of Madness, a title so fitting for this was truly a product of divine intervention, a meeting with The Most Ancient Of The Days. Inspirations only possible through our commitment to the Ancient Ones.

"We willfully give of ourselves to be your instrument on this earth."

Like every recording that followed, we received a bit of "opposition" from those who found their strength through aligning their beliefs and meanings with this or that group. Paradigm Shifters are always dealt a large portion of resistance before they are accepted and embraced. All the pain and rejection was well worth it for we have inspired and motivated many musicians and therefore did our part to keep the cycle going. It was only due to our commitment to the Ancient Ones that resulted in this extreme "living" music but it wasn't for the casual "it's cool to be fooled" listener.

During this time I couldn't be bothered to have to conform to certain keys or scales and for some who witnessed Morbid Angel live it was an experience that was quite painful to the eyes and mind. This music was pure chaos and chaos can cause confusion to those conditioned by certain doctrines of musical, and even overall discernment foundational orders.

It's from these fashioned systems of thinking and the presuppositions resulting that create useless oceans of illusions that some unknowingly spend their lives drowning in. All that there is - is here and now. The wake never propels the boat and it's only through the attachments of the ego holding on to the past and creating a dependency on how others abide by one's hierarchy of rules that causes the toils of sin. The "burning in hell" Christian concept at best reflects on the suffering brought about by one's determination to hold on to such illusions while the Higher Self is subtly showing that these attempts are the works of folly. That with such efforts men confuses iron shackles with golden chains, luxurious palaces with sorrow filled dungeons, respect with fear, and all the while adding more concrete to his cell. The self-made prison in which he further buries himself in this realm of time and space, this realm of illusions, this realm of the mundane. It is only through one's investment into such falseness that causes one's "separation" and blindness to the cornucopia and affluence that is in everyone by birthright.

Trey Azagthoth

5 out of 5 stars One of the best death metal albums EVER.......2006-08-16

Altars of Madness was released in 1989 and to this day, it is hailed as one of the best death metal albums ever. Sure it doesnt have the up-to-date production that bands have today, but make no mistake this is what its all about. Evil vocals, amazing blast beats, insane solos... I honestly can not put into words how great this album is.

Morbid Angel has re-released this album and included a 2nd bonus DVD of Morbid Angel on the Grindcrusher tour back in 1989. The sound is excellent and the DVD is worth the price alone.

All metal fans should own this CD. All Morbid Angel fans MUST check out the DVD as well.

I like this album very much.
but I hate the DVD side, the editing.
Why do they use a "fade to black editing" when David is talking.
Come on!!! I want to see David talking to the fans there, I only hear his voice and see a black screen, I HATE IT!!!!!
I don't mind about the sound and the quality of the colour of the video.(it's not that good but it's not bad)
I love the gig they did.
