A surprising gem.......2004-05-31
Hawkwind was coming out of the worst peoriod in their creative history with the addition of a female singer (Bridget Wiseart) and the readdition of violinist Simon House. With Richard Chadwick on drums, Alan Davey on bass, and Harvey Baimbridge on Keyboards, they had a really accomplished lineup--as the quality of the sound will attest. Band leader Dave Brock was taking Hawkwind into the 1990's with a new sound that would see a greater emphisis on the techno / electronica sound mixed with metal overtones. Palace Springs represents the dying gasps of the previos era where the band strugdled with its identity and put out a series of lackluster albums with truely awesome names like "Sonic Attack" and "Choose Your Masques" and "Zones." Simon House, the boomeranging violinist, seems always to have a positive effect on the band's sound, making it smooth and dreamy. On Palace Springs his influence is felt in Songs such as Treadmill (the most awe-inspiring track on the CD) and "Void of Golden Light." An era of stasis was ending and Hawkwind was on the edge of the exodus of most of the band, and this album was a fitting link from old to new. Buy it for Treadmill, if nothing else. It's worth the price.
Hawkwind - 'Palace Springs' (Roadracer Records).......2004-03-28
Another decent live Hawkwind effort that was recorded on the band's U.S. tour in 1990.Line-up is as follows:Brock,Bainbridge,Alan Davey,Richard Chadwick,Simon House and vocalist Bridgett Wishart. This CD has got to feature the QUIETEST live audience I've ever encountered.I've spoken with two fans that actually attended a few dates of the band's 1990 tour and both confirmed it was, indeed a quiet crowd. The disc's track listing is somewhat impressive with older tunes such as "Lives Of Great Men"(actually "Golden Void"),"Time We Left" and "Damnation Alley".Then there's a couple of songs that are exclusive to this CD,like "Acid Test" and the mind blowing "Treadmill".Great sound mix.

In my book, Hawkwind's best from the 1990s.......2002-05-08
I won't forget the day I found a cassette of Palace Springs. It was on the RoadRacer label, a label that general dealt with speed/thrash/death metal. I already had a few of Hawkwind's releases from the 1970s. I was curious how Hawkwind sounded in the 1990s and once I heard Palace Springs, I was amazed. The band did not sell out, and did not turn to speedmetal (thank goodness) despite them being on the same label as Sepultura. The album was recorded live, but it has all the quality of a studio recording. There are several new songs like "Back in the Box", "Treadmill", and "Acid Test" as well as very inspired version of such classics as "Damnation Alley", "Time We Left", "Void of Golden Light", and "Heads". I was also really amazed at the band's synth sound. Certainly lots of digital synths are used, as you expect from a 1991 recording, but there are plenty of Moog-like lead synth sounds making me think that they also used analog synths, or make a digital synth sound analog. The band was trying for a '70s prog sound, but with some modern, early '90s elements, like the aforementioned used of digital synths. Definately more guitar oriented than Space Bandits and the band seemed to have dropped their '80s style drum machine for real drums, making me feel this is quite an improvement over Space Bandits. This was the last Hawkwind album to feature Harvey Bainbridge, Simon House, and Bridgett Wishart. Although many seem to prefer their 1992 followup Electric Tepee, for me I feel that this was one of Hawkwind's best from the 1990s.
Bainbridge's Best.......2000-04-14
This CD contains Harvey Bainbridge's best work, Acid Test, the culmination of his experiments with ambient rock. For that reason, it's an absolute must-have.
