Brilliant........2006-10-09

I find very fascinating the overall evolution of symphonic black metal, from the earlier days of Burzum using the subtlest tinge of keyboards, to Emperor's romping epic grandeur, and now to this, Limbonic Art, whom really have very little to do with metal in the traditional sense and have transcended themselves to something entirely different altogether. Moon in the Scorpio is itself a Symphony that thinks its a metal album. It is wrought all throughout with enough gripping pathos, angst, grievance, introspection, and redeeming ecstasy to fill the biggest Shakespearean play. Its opening track, Beneath the Burial Surface, alone has a two minute-long symphonic intro, and by the time the nearly 14 minute long track is over you've felt like you've already heard the whole album, but it's just beginning! As in all classical Black Metal, this album rewards those who pay attention and get into the atmosphere and long-winded progression, and agonizes those who would rather listen to a neat and concise four minute long Cradle of Filth track to scare and impress their friends.
Limbonic Art has always used a drum machine, which could theoretically make them Industrial Symphonic Black Metal, but I really couldn't care less. The drums serve their purpose and keep a steady, rumbling pace of blast beats and double-bass, and actually sound quite organic anyways. The guitars, once again as in lots of SBM, are withdrawn and reduced to static, textural tones of distortion, which, along with the sizzle of the cymbals, provide a very shearing treble sound that I suppose provide some sense of the traditional hazy, grim Black Metal atmosphere at some parts, but mostly the guitar serves to support the keyboards.
One thing I've noticed about playing this release is that it just does not work during the daytime. The atmosphere evokes such a strong feeling of darkness and biting cold which only works during the nighttime. My recommendation: Take a nice, long midnight stroll, under the full moon, with this CD playing in your Walkman.

I don't know who this guy below me is that claimed this is his third favorite Limbonic Art CD. This is the best Limbonic Art CD.... frankly, this is the best Black Metal CD, ever.

(p.s. I am an old fan of Dissection, Arcturus, Burzum, Emperor, etc... all the old classic BM bands.)

Melodic, brutal, sick, twisted, orchestral, moving, dark, gothic, whisper quiet, raging noise,....these are all words that can describe this album, it is a very strong release from these masters of symphonic black metal

An unheard masterpeice.......2006-07-04

i got this album after i heard ghetto heaven off of the chain album.of course ghetto heaven became one of my favorite records ever with its soul II soul inspired tempo.then of course i heard sweet liberation.after hearing that i wanted more songs like that in the future and sure enough i got more than i bargained for.

this album is like hard rock,funk,soul,hip-hop,contemparary jazz all rolled into one.along with livin colour's "times up",faith no more's "angel dust" this is one of the most eclectic albums ever released.sandra's voice is stronger than tina turners on a sugar rush.the album almost become speed metal on some songs.the instrumentation is bad azz on this cd.people truly don't know what their missing.

Why is it all the best music comes as a chance discovery - 2nd hand in an obscure record store, or through word of mouth? I have to admit to hearing Shades of Blue a couple of times on the radio back in the day.. but man, these guys were SOOOO underrated. Just like Fishbone, 4hero, Jill Scott, Meshell Ndegeocello... and so on. All black musicians too.

Anyway enough lamentation, this albums rocks hard and with socially conscious yet uncontrived lyrics. It also features the unbelievably sexy vocals of Sandra St Victor... most of the time she sounds as though she is close to orgasm. Vernon Reid of Living Colour puts some screaming guitar on New World Order, and the album has some pretty ahead-of-its time programming and dance rhythms for 1991.

There is also gospel in the form of Where Does Mommy Live?, and a beautiful jazz instrumental called Free Spirit. Musicianship and composition is first rate and I am still playing it 14 years later, so get your groove on and buy it off eBay, or live a dull and soulless existence!!

WOW.......2006-01-29

Musicianship, lyricism, arrangement.. this album has it all. Quiet Desperation absolutely floored me. It's evident that Peter knew that what he was writing wouldn't be popular with mainstream radio by the track Plantation Radio. I thank him 4 sticking to his guns anyway. Hopefully, oneday, we'll see his return. This one bad who was truly versatile. They could rock HARD, chillout, and make a killer ballad. All the respect in the world goes out to a truly talented band with content and purpose.

One of the best records you never heard.......2005-05-14

One of the best records you never heard... if you haven't that is and you really should. Some records are maybe just a little too good to be a massive success but this deserves your undivided attention.

The Family Stand was one mighty talented collective, in each and every department (as singers, writers, musicians, producers...) This is like a soul map of musical possibilities within so-called 'black music'. I mean it pretty much touches on every pre-dominantly black form of music, be it blues, jazz, soul, funk, gospel... (even some rap) ofcourse it also totally rocks and I guess being white, listening to this makes me feel SO white but hey I still want to listen to this more & more & more please, it just feels so damn good. Not that it's strictly feel-good music, in fact a lot of these songs deal with very serious matters, so worth paying attention to the lyrics as well.

If you see this baby somewhere don't hesitate to snap it up.

Epic rock album.......2005-04-27

Add me to the list of people who love this underrated album. I saw them perform "Shades of Blue" on David Letterman one night. I was in bed, almost asleep when they came on. By the time the song ended, I was out of bed and dancing around the room. The next day I bought the CD. "Quiet Desperation" and "Sky Is Falling" are just two of my favorites on this rockin' set.
