5 out of 5 stars Thank you Jonathan Schwartz.......2007-01-14

This is another unbelieveable talent that I was introduced to through Jonathan Schwartz's show on WNYC. The recording quality of this live album almost defies belief. Additionally, the song selections are nearly perfect for a forum such as the Rainbow Room in NYC. What a wonderful album just to sit back and enjoy with your eyes closed and a nice tumbler of Scotch. I promise, you will love this album. And, if you're already a Jane Monheit fan, may I also recommend another wonderful talent in the same genre, Nancy LaMott.

2 out of 5 stars Good news, bad news.......2006-12-19

Jane Monheit has a lovely voice, reminds me of early Maureen McGovern. That's the good news.

The bad news is everything else. The songs she chose for this live CD are uninteresting and over-performed by practically everyone else. Worse, Monheit and her back-up arrangements have no tempo, no intention, and no gut feelings invested in them. It's the aural equivalent of watching paint dry. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is so stretched out, you could do a load of laundry and your grocery shopping, come back, and she'd still be singing it. Monheit also feels the need to talk between every single number, before she launches into her boring rendition of it.

I asked for this CD for Christmas, based on the 4 1/2 star rating it recieved on Amazon.

Don't believe everthing you read!!!

4 out of 5 stars Goddess.......2006-09-29

This CD is worth it for "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Since You've Asked." The orchestrations take you to other worlds, and Jane's interpretations are deeply enthused with feeling. The only problem I have is with the CD graphics. This was recorded when she was still "full figured" (and in my opinion, more in touch with her music) and all of the pictures are stretched, skewed and pixelated. Why? Because we wouldn't buy it if she was bigger than a size 0? Disappointing message being sent with the art choices, but the music more than makes up for it.

3 out of 5 stars Return to Oz, in living color.......2006-07-12

While Kurt Elling virtually owns the field of male jazz singing by default (who else is there?), female jazz divas proliferate at a dizzying rate. As a result, I'm probably the last person with ears (and eyes) to get to the much hyped Ms. Monheit. On the basis of this recording, Jane reveals that she indeed may come closest to possessing the virtuosity and control of an Ann Hampton Calloway--but not so close that she can trust her musical rhetoric alone to force the result. Were the word "live" not in the title, the occasional, distant audience response would hardly be noticed, notwithstanding the artist's curiously disembodied "thank you's." On the other hand, the epithets "everything," "enchanting," "magnificent," "magic" are so numerous on the back cover of the jewel case that one wonders how the texts of the songs themselves will even stand a chance.

This one is a producer's dream, featuring a performer whose spinning vibratos, constantly crescendoing phrasings, hasty deference to the contributions of her musicians bear the stamp of a talented ingenue confident of possessing it all--the program, the repertory, the audience' adoring, unqualified approval. Unfortunately, there's hardly a moment that swings ("Cheek to Cheek" is the lone exeption, albeit overly "arranged"), nor scarcely a musical measure whose intrinsic breath can compete with Monheit's melodramatic sighs on this strangely lush and suffocating, heavily textured session that nearly defies description--sort of quasi-operatic pop with occasional jazz inflections. Maybe Monheit is looking for a chance to team up with Manilow.

Or maybe the problem is the "Rainbow Room," which appears to influence the entire program, starting with "Over the Rainbow"(this is the first time I've heard "Waters of March" sound like "Yellow Brick Road"). Let's hope Jane's next live venture takes her back to Kansas: downstairs at the Village Vanguard with a mere piano trio led by the likes of Mike Renzi or Fred Hersch, and with the presiding muses of Billie, Carmen, Ella, Sarah, and Etta Jones (or, for that matter, Nancy Lamott) to insure that the tradition doesn't get sacrificed to another merely pretty voice, however perfect, magical, and enchanting the smarmy producers choose to describe it.

5 out of 5 stars Jazziest Monheit album.......2005-09-24

The jazzier she gets, the better I like her. The trouble with other Monheit discs like "In the Sun" and even "Taking a Chance" (though there are a few good, jazzy cuts on the latter), is that they seem to have been aimed at a wider (not jazz-oriented) audience. I prefer it when Monheit embellishes. That's exactly what I'm listen for. Consequently "Live at the Rainbow Room" contains my favorite versions of the songs that she has recorded on other albums. This includes "Over the Rainbow." I have heard two other Monheit renditions of it, and this is the best.
Curious that few reviewers think as I do that her rendition of "Tea for Two" is actually sad. Seductive, yes, but also sad. It's as if she's singing about how happy they'll be with their picket fence and 2.5 kids, yet subconsciously there is a dirge in there--she knows it won't turn out as she hope. It's about the melancholy pleasure of expecting happily-ever-after even though it won't ever be.
There are some numbers I like less, but mostly, it's great, and Joel Frahm on sax, Ron Carter on bass and the rest of the featured musicians are excellent. I think its on "Dindi" that Frahm really cuts loose with a great solo. And on the "Waters of March" there is an amazing duet between Monheit and a horn. (At least I think that's what I'm hearing.)

5 out of 5 stars Endearing Collection of Montovani Film Music.......2006-09-28

This is a very good collection of Montovani film music. These recording are so soothing and pleasing to the ear. Most impressive are Montovani's versions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is incredibly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Movies and Mantovani Make Magnificent Musical Memories. .......2005-04-18

In this year in which fans celebrate Mantovani's 100th birthday, another excellent British compilation of some of the great maestro's original recordings has been released. The tracks on this CD come predominantly from Mantovani's 1957 bestselling LP, Film Encores, his 1959 Film Encores Volume 2, and his 1967 LP entitled "Mantovani/Hollywood." Up until now, the six tracks from the Hollywood LP have been the most difficult to find on CD in locations other than Japan, and it includes Monty's exciting arrangements of the themes from Zorba the Greek, the Magnficent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia, and You Only Live Twice. While these alone are worth the CD price, the remaining selections comprise the very best of Mantovani's film music library, including Unchained Melody (now better known as the theme from the movie "Ghost"), April Love, the theme from The Apartment, and Charlie Chaplin's Limelight. Attentive Mantovani fans will hear the inclusion of a less heard variation of the "golden hit" Moon River in which the maestro replaced the trumpet solo with the soprano sax in a later recording of this forever popular number. Sooner or later, and we hope sooner, everything recorded by the original orchestra led by the incomparable Mantovani will appear on CD. That is a just and fitting tribute to the most popular light orchestra leader in the 20th Century whose music will live on and will be heard to delight fans all over the world in the 21st.

5 out of 5 stars At his best.......2000-09-23

Gillan's voice is amazing and powerful. I would even put this album next to Made in Japan by Deep Purple.

Most of the songs are from Clear Air Turbulence, his unusually funky and jazzy record. The style of Ian Gillan stands out with every single record he produces. Live at the Rainbow catches us in the time period, when he was trying to find his style after breakup with Deep Purple.

The remake of classic Child in Time sounds much better than the studio version, and the vocals on Purple classics is great!

5 out of 5 stars Simply excellent.......2000-08-22

Wow! I just finished listening to this album, and I must admit the quality of this live recording is exceptional. The opening cut of "Clear Air Turbulence" was really tight and super funky. You can almost tell that these guys were listening to Zappa at the time. What really stood out was the re-working of "Child In Time", Which had a great Pink Floyd-ish drum break down. Fans of Deep Purple and Ian Gillan Better wear their diapers, this c.d. absolutely rocks!!

4 out of 5 stars Great performance.Less than perfect recording........2005-02-17

Some fans who have this disc may wonder why the disc is in somewhat gritty mono sound, even though some of the songs appeared in full-fidelity stereo on the album "Strung Up".It can be explained. Two recordings were made of this show:a multitrack recording and a mono soundboard tape.Unfortunately, the snare drum never made it onto the multitrack, forcing drummer(the late) Mick Tucker to dub in a newly performed snare drum in the studio...but only for the songs that the group was planning to release. For the other songs, the only tape with the snare drum is the mono soundboard tape. Some previous reissues(such as the one on the DOJO label) combined the available stereo tracks with the rest in mono. This release is entirely from the mono soundboard tape, hence it is totally free of studio overdubbing and doctoring. It is what the audience heard at the show.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet-"Live from London 1973".......2004-11-12

This album,is "Sweet" at their best, all the way from "Little Willy" to their soon to be released "Teenage rampage".It includes their only number one hit,"Blockbuster" and includes the song that has since become their anthem, the classy chinn-chapman compilation,"The Ballroom Blitz".It is unlike any other live album, because the songs sound almost the same as the studio.Moreso it shows the group at their personal best!!!!

This is a great live album, albeit a short one, and the renditions of "Running Kind/Lonesome Fugitive," "Back to the Barrooms," and "Sing Me Back Home" are the best you'll find anywhere. This is real deal country, not the garbage the CMA promotes today, and the cd is a joy to listen to. Recorded when Haggard was at the top of his game, this is one of his rowdiest and more energetic collections of songs. Highly recommended for those new to Haggard. Grab it before it's out of circulation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME Live Album .......2007-01-24

This is one of the best live albums ever released. You want to hear virtuoso musicians play their instruments extremely loud and with consummate taste? Do you want music that barnstorms over you, kicks your behind and energizes you without being some simplistic hard-rock or heavy metal crap, that sparks your imagination without being pretentious and soft? Well, you don't have to go as far back towards the blues as the Allman Brothers or as far out into jazz and indian music as Mahavishnu Orchestra or as far into classical music as Yes and ELP for that, you can get a perfect blend of all those influences right here with Focus. You get long jams with incredible, building, super-busy, master-controlled, angular, cutting and ferocious guitar solos by Akkerman that are just the perfect blend of jazz and rock and classical. Akkerman is the famous one and in fact, at the time this album came out in 1973, he managed to beat out Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Duane Allman, Jeff Beck & others in a Melody Maker Magazine Poll to be named 'World's Greatest Guitarist.' Then you have the rest of the guys in this great band who are not as well-known but just as much true artists on their instruments: Bert Ruiter (bass) Pierre van der Linden (drums) & Thijs Van Leer (keyboards, flute, vocals) and you add the famous Focus sense of humor for spice and BAM! The entire album is a highlight but the most energetic track is the superfast version of Hocus Pocus and the endless yodelling breaks (and one operatic break!) that keep slowing down and speeding up.

Great remastered sound to crank way up on your stereo (not surround, don't use surround or it'll thin out the sound, these albums were recorded for stereo playback). In fact I was surprised at how good the sound was since Focus albums aren't known to have the best production.

In short, if you like the Allman Brothers, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Yes, King Crimson, ELP or any of those early 1970s monster bands, then you cannot afford to pass up "Focus Live At the Rainbow" which is up there with greatest live albums ever released.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album Must Have...........2006-07-24

I have over three hundred titles in my CD collection which covers much of the early to present pop cultures, and if they were to be lost and if I was left with just this Live cd concert of this dutch group, I would still be heaving a sigh of relief. Ten years ago I found my copy thru an internet buying store and to tell you it took me 14 years to get it on cd format. Man it was like looking for a needle in a haystack, if you know what I mean. I revere this over everything else in my music collection, why, maybe because I have never heard any other group play like this group, great progressions of music at its time and counds refreshing to this day.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Complete Concert!!!.......2005-11-12

This CD - Live At The Rainbow, used to be a double album in the seventies, I bought it back then for proof. It is missing a couple of tracks, namely; Anonymus, but other than that it is a good CD. Because it is missing a few tracks, is why I give it 3 stars. I hope it might get reissued properly, the way it was originally, the way it was released for the U.S.A.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent but pointless.......2004-12-24

Like most Focus albums, this had a different cover in the US and Europe. The CD uses the European cover. The CD is 42 minutes long, and the sound quality is good, but not bright.

I don't know whether to give this CD one star or five stars. The music is excellent, but it is not much different than the studio versions on the first three ablums. So, in a way, it is kind of pointless if you already own the first three albums.

The first 20 minutes of the album is a suite of music. Each of the compositions is actually shorter than what was on the original studio albums. But, it is blended together perfectly, and played beautifully. It is very mesmerizing. It is one of those concerts where you can go into a complete daze.

Next comes an 8 minute version of Eruption, which was 22 minutes long on the Moving Waves CD. I usually don't like it when a group plays a truncated version of a track. The group usually plays the main themes and piece comes out as a annoying, frustrating tease of what could be better. A prime example is the excerpts of Six Wives of Henry VIII that Wakeman plays on Yessongs. But, Focus does a good job of editing down the material.

The album ends with an 11 minute version of Hocus Pocus with a little bit a Sylvia mixed in. It contains what is probably the best yodel jam in all of rock history. But, it may get a little overboard and silly near the end. Besides the yodelling, they play this tune with a lot of power and energy.

Besides the elongated Hocus Pocus, there is nothing really that new on this album. But I still enjoy because they take some of their best music and present it in a new way. I played this album just after listening to Moving Waves and Focus III and was still entertained.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums of the '70s.......2004-09-03

The playing is looser than on the studio versions, but also more impassioned. Jan Akermans guitar playing is amazing, he really stretches out and plays some very fast and creative jazz-rock solos. Excellent playing all around, the band is firing on all cylinders. I have to say that I prefer many of the live intepretations over their studio counterparts. "Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!" is much better live due to the amazing solos. The sound quality is fine: its well recorded and the mix is ballanced. An excellent album, their third best after Focus 3 and Moving Waves.

4 out of 5 stars One of punk's best live sets.......2001-05-30

Let's face facts: punk rock is not a genre for good live albums. There are rare exceptions: MC5's "Jams", Iggy's "Live At the Channel 88", Viletones' "Saturday Night Sunday Morning", boots of the Pistols' Winterland swansong and this CHORDS set. Recorded in 1980 (but not released until 86) this album shows this great Mod band to have been exciting before an audience. In the studio the Chords recalled the Clash crossed with the Jam but live they were faster, looser, cruder & better. Best songs: "something's missing", "happy families", "British way of life", "tumbelling down", and "maybe tommorow" (their best single).
