Best Hawkwind Album.......2007-04-28

I love this album pop it in maybe 1 time every week, all you really need to know is You Shouldn't Do That, it has to be my faviret song of all time.

Light Years Ahead Of Their Time.......2007-03-13

Worth the price of admision for the 2 tracks-'You shouldn't do that', and "Master od the universe'. Absolute masterpieces. Firsy track clocks in at over 15 minutes and I never get tired of it. Sensational feel, full of synths, sound generators, hippy vocals, all backed by solid drumming and Rickenbacker bass (Dave Anderson,-whatever happened to him?)-superb line up! A must have for any Hawkwind fan. Forget about the rip-off compilations and live stuff-get this, and the later 'Electric Tepee'

'You Shouldn't do That' track ruins half the album!! Because it's 15 minutes long!!.......2007-02-03

I went through a big Hawkwind phase in the early 90s and remember the excitement and joy when this CD arrived at the local mall from being specially ordered (This was before the internet was big, and odd, weird, unpopular stuff had to be special ordered by phone or catalog)

On first listen, I was let down. 'You Shouldn't Do That' can be described as one of most atrocious instrumentals known to man. It does start off cool enough with an eerie, trippy special effect intro simulating something taking off into space. Then as soon as the saxophone kicks in, everything turns to crap! It's one thing to know how to play the sax and quite another to just mindlessly blow into the stupid thing. Anyways, when all the key instruments get introduced in the beginning and kind of work their way up into the main riff, it then sounds like the sax and guitar start vomiting on eachother, and then it repeats and repeats and repeats and repeats until they vomit on eachother again; then repeats a few more dozen times for a total of 15 painful minutes!! At one point, everyone in the group seemed content to plunk out any old note which made the song barely listenable at all. By then, the only musician holding this fiasco together was the drummer. And the lyrics? Why would you put non-sensical hippeeisms into a so called 'space rock' song? I dont know. Out of the 30 or 40 times I heard this song, I only sat through the WHOLE thing twice!! Apologies to die-hard fans for slamming this track, but it really IS that bad and puts a big dent in the album considering its length.

Now that that atrocity is out of the way, on to the rest of the album- the other songs aren't really that bad and make for some interesting soundscape music. 'You're Only Dreaming' has a wonderful 'breath of fresh air' motif as a backing to it's graceful swirl of electrics. 'Master of the Universe' was the sinister heavy metal track about the all supreme being- the guitar chords to this are nice fat and distorted. I do prefer this version to the 'Space Ritual' version because even though the Ritual's version is faster and heavier, it repeats itself beyond all levels of tolerance. 'In Search of Space's' version seems slower but shorter and to the point at the same time.

'Adjust Me' is another exploration of atmosphere and fuzzed out electronics. It conjures up images of an android assembly plant and one of them seems to malfunction beyond control: 'adjust me... adjust meee adjust meeeee adjust meeeeeeeeeeee'. Very cool.

'We took the Wrong Step Years Ago' and 'Children of the Sun' are very extremely well played acoustic works that draw beautiful, lush, vivid images. I would say that mr. Brock fares better with the acoustic guitar than the electric. He has very good rythm.

All in all, a decent early 70s space rock album save for the first 15 minute bowel movement. It renders this album rather short but thankfully, the re-issue has bonus tracks to make up for this.

Their best studio cd?.......2005-03-17

I came to Hawkwind through their live cd "Space Ritual", which is one of the outstanding live cds of all time. This studio cd is from about the same time period, and is the only cd that replicates the power of Hawkwind's live performances.

The opening cut, "You Shouldn't Do That", (which clocks in at 15:41!) is a good test of whether you are or are not going to be a Hawkwind fan. Many of my friends find the song boring and repetitive - but in fact it makes good use of a repeated themes intermixed with background variations, and is in the same league as songs like "The Sheltering Sky" by King Crimson. The next three cuts keep things moving at a nice pace. "We Took the Wrong Step Years Ago" is particularly noteworthy - it is a powerful acoustic song that in some ways reminds me of some of the acoustic pieces on Led Zepplin's zoso cd (Led Zepplin 4). The final two cuts on the cd are a bit weaker, and the three bonus tracks, while good enough, are hardly essential (though one of these, "Silver Machine", has achieved near legendary status among some Hawkwind fans because of a rumored live cut of the song that was apparently left off the "Space Ritual" cd.

The question mark in my review refers to the fact that I have yet to listen to any Hawkwind cd more recent than "Quark, Strangeness, and Charm". Certainly "In Search of Space" is their best early studio effort, and though not perfect, it is well deserving of a five star rating.

Stepping Forward.......2005-03-12

The second album from legendary star-traveling metalloids Hawkwind is a big step up from their charming if flawed debut album...and almost where they'd plant themselves with their magnificent third album. They're getting there, though, and for the most part it's an engaging listening in. Especially since the beginning of the best-known Hawkwind lineup is now in place: aside from the early mainstays (guitarist Dave Brock, saxophonist/flutist Nik Turner, drummer Terry Ollis, keyboardsman/electronicat Del Dettmar), second guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton is gone, bassist Dave Anderson is succeeded by Ian (Lemmy) Kilmister before the album is done (Anderson co-wrote two songs), poet/vocalist Robert Calvert is aboard, and Dik Mik Davies (who seems to have exited briefly after the debut album) returns to team with Del Dettmar (who joined when Davies first departed) on keyboards and electronica.

The good news: It has their first bona-fide band classic, the extraterrestrial thrust of "Master of the Universe" (which beats the bloody hell out of Black Sabbath and their "Masters of Reality" any day of the week, and has probably been beaten to death for its popularity in concert over the years) and a pair of exquisite electro jams, "You Know You're Only Dreaming" (written by Brock) and "Adjust Me" (a group composition). Not to mention a pair of sweet acoustic dreams, "We Took The Wrong Step Years Ago" and "Children of the Sun."

The not-so-good news: "You Shouldn't Do That" is fifteen minutes of grandly pounding rock and roll with perfectly understated electronic lacing and transdimensionally spare flute and guitar lines, as if the Velvet Underground had scored a 1950s sci-fi B-movie, but disrupted rather unconscionably by a lyric which doesn't exactly sound like it really belongs to this music.

The bonus news: Two brilliant earlier singles--the underrated "Born to Go" and the coming major hit "Silver Machine"--are included with this remastered version. So as a package of stepping forward and then kicking themselves right into their own future, the new "In Search of Space" probably outpoints the original album.

The best news: "In Search of Space" is a direct line to the beginning of their best studio work and, probably, their best-remembered period.

Flawed Track Inclusion.......2007-07-29

I have to admit right off the bat that I don't own this album, although I've been trying to scrape up all the original soundtracks for the movies and some of the TV series. But looking through the track listing, it seems muddled with too many sound effects and tracks that could've been replaced with better ones. I wish Paramount and the recording industries would release a 2-CD set of tracks that includes only the main title sequences of each Star Trek TV series and standout tracks from the 10 feature films, since most of these soundtracks have gone out of print and are hard to find. Most of these compilations of different film tracks never include the main title sequences of the films, which are often the standout orchestral tracks of each movie. I hope they release an album like this, filled with only the best Trek music that is hard to find.

Quite good, but not a stellar "Trek".......2007-05-18

Silva Screen Records has made a name for itself releasing reproductions of modern orchestral soundtracks, with most of its products centering around a particular genre or composer. Star Trek has a history of quality music, so its no suprise Silva has taken a crack at music in the final frontier. This is a fine release, with some strong points and some weak ones as well.

IN GENERAL: For the purist looking for a "best of" compilation taken from the original soundtracks take note: this isn't that product. Rather, these are reproductions by Nic Raine conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic. That said, this is a quality group, and the general sound is professional and comes off quite well (for the most part..I'll mention a few exceptions). It is superior to the other releases I have heard from the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

SELECTION: The biggest advantage here is variety of sources. The Trek feature films are all represented here, as well as the various series (except for the last one, "Enterprise"). The thouroughness seems to match or excel the oher Star Trek Compilation CDs that have been released. There are a few other offbeat additions..notably a four minute suite from the videogame Star Fleet Academy. Personally, I found this bland track to be four minutes of wasted disk space. The original series has many memorable moments (listen to the Amok Time/The Doomsday Machine soundtrack) which would be be more exciting and also a better fit on this album.

Jerry Goldsmith's standard Star Trek March is heard far too often on these 2 CDs. The march itself is terrific, but it has been used so much it has become the franchise's major theme and the album's producers rely on it by representing many movies by their "End Titles". Unfortunately, Goldsmith's end titles consistently use a three-section approach: two sections of the "standard" Star Trek March sandwich a middle section of music that is unique for that particular film. This is OK if you are listening to a single movie's soundtrack, but for a compilation album, the fourth or fifth time you hear the march, it is too much. It would have been a better idea to cut a few "End Title" performances in favor of other selections from the films' soundtracks.

PERFORMANCE QUALITY: For the most part it is very good and captures the spirit of the original soundtracks. Selections from Horner's scores for the second and third films stand out as particularly well done. The last movie, "Nemesis" also has a terrifically arranged suite, and most of the movie soundtrack reproductions are very good quality. The only exception is from "Klingon Attack" in which the awesome bass of the "blaster-beam" from the original cannot be matched by the comparatively hollow synthesized atempt here.

PERSONAL GRIPE: the inclusion of sound effects. Every so often a special effect like "Warp Drive" or "Dogfight in Space" pops up between tracks. This by itself would be extremely cheesy. Add to this that these are not the actual sound effects from the TV shows or movies and the cheesiness levels reach a level I think only a Wisconsin resident could appreciate. Sci Fi music (and Star Trek in particular) seems to inspire some labels to add special effects inclusions like this. Who knows why.

I must disagree.......2005-07-17

I own all the original recordings, and I still enjoy this re-recording. It is good. It is better than the Cincinatti Pops "Symphonic Star Trek", it is better than the Richard Hayman "Star Trek" compilation from 89, its better than the Sci Fi compilation on the Edel label from 93 and for the most part is better than Varese's Ultimate Star Trek from 1998.

This collection has music you will not find anywhere else. The Tasha's Farewell track is beautiful and the only other place its avialable is the Edel "Best of Science Fiction" compilation from 1993, and while that was recorded by the same orchestra, it was with a different conductor, and comparing the two, you can tell that Nic Raine was more successful with Prague than William Motzing was. That said Edel release is also more than $30 here on amazon. Also this release is in HDCD Dolby which is a plus. There's also two cues from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; one of them is on The Best of Star Trek: 30th Anniversary Special, the other is not on any other album. In addition, there is music from Ron Jones "Starfleet Academy" video game which is pretty cool to listen to, and not availble anywhere else that I know of. Finally, Jerry Goldsmith's main theme can get boring after a while, I mean, its repetitive that it is in all the end credit suites, it would have been nice for Insurrection to have maybe an action cue instead of the end credits suite...And Nic Raine, did just that, only for Star Trek: Nemesis. Instead of the tradition end credit suite, Mr. Raine arranged a professional suite with the main Nemesis theme, some action cues, as well as the Goldsmith Star Trek march, and it is a wonderful 8 minutes. If you already have the 3 space and beyond albums, the Star Trek Nemesis track as well as Birds of Prey Decloaking from Star Trek III are the only new tracks on this CD.

This is a must-buy for fans of star trek in general, and hardcore star trek fans should buy this album for the aforementioned cues that aren't available anywhere else.

SUCH a PHENOMENAL work of art!!!!!!.......2003-02-21

This is a contender for being the greatest album of all time. I really mean that. I have had several spiritual orgasms listening to this stuff. "You Shouldn't Do That" is a work of pure genius, and if it were a painting, it would make sense to take down the Mona Lisa and put this song up in its place. I love the song "Adjust Me" just as much. I think the psychological state of nirvana might sound like this album. I have been in love with it for ages. Imagine a group of people with extreme musical creativity and talent combining space music, heavy metal, jazz, and folk into one form. That is this album. (Hawkwind had several other great albums in their early days, by the way.)

CLASSIC HAWKWIND!!.......2002-03-02

The first HAWKWIND album, aside from the opening and closing
tracks, sounded like one long, very unpleasant dream. IN SEARCH OF SPACE is MUCH, MUCH BETTER and still stands as one of their
greatest albums! Every track, except the headache inducing acid
trip ADJUST ME, is great! It's odd that this is the only album
where DAVE BROCK and NIK TURNER wrote songs together, for their
two colloborations on this, YOU SHOULDN'T DO THAT and MASTER OF
THE UNIVERSE, are two of the best HAWKWIND tunes ever and were
the first two songs that really defined who HAWKWIND were or were
going to be. YOU SHOULDN'T DO THAT is 16 minutes worth of hard
rock guitar riffing, free form jazz soloing and spaced out vocals
and vocal chants and has some outstanding jazz influenced drum-
ming from TERRY OLLIS; it also has a very cool bass line by DAVE ANDERSON and some wild and crazy electronics by DIK MIK and DEL DETTMAR(love
them names!!). On top of all that, it's a very catchy song and even at 16 minutes long, STILL doesn't feel long enough!
MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE is a heavy metal/space rock classic, with
one of BROCK's most irresistably catchy guitar riffs. Again, the
drumming is outstanding, as is DAVE ANDERSON'S bass playing.
I never cared for the live versions of this song; I feel that they sped it up too much. This is the definitive version of this
song. CHILDREN OF THE SUN, a NIK TURNER/DAVE ANDERSON, collobora-
tion is a very folksy/hippy like acoustic number and a mighty
catchy tune at that! DAVE BROCK's two songs, YOU KNOW YOU'RE ONLY
DREAMING and WE TOOK THE WRONG STEP YEARS AGO, are also quite en-
joyable; the former being a very psychedelic song and more like
something from their first album and the latter an acoustic
guitar driven protest song. The only real fault with the album, I
think, is NIK TURNER's vocals, but this is but a minor gripe!
This is a great album; no HAWKWIND fan should be without it!

Along with Black Sabbath's Master of Reality, in Search of Space combine my best preferred couple of albums of all times. It is wayyyyyyy hard to distinguish any song among others in this album. They are all excellent except, perhaps, for Adjust me which is simply very good. In short, if you don't have the monovenical IN SEARCH OF SPACE ..thennnnnn..YOU SHOULDN'T DO THAT!!!!!!!

A 3-CD box set,that many would probably consider to be a cheezy compilation with second rate songs that would cost next to nil to release.And they're right,to a degree.'In Search...',hard to believe has many tunes that aren't half bad.Some of the tracks that I sort of liked are Gong-"Pot Head Pixies",13th Floor Elevators-"Kingdom Of Heaven",Electric Flag-"I Was Robbed Last Night",Amon Duul&Robert Calvert-"Urban Indian",Hawkwind-"Welcome To The Future" and "Silver Machine",Daevid Allen-"Opium For The People" and the Yardbirds-"Shapes Of Things".A few that I didn't think at ALL belonged here are Fleetwood Mac-"Got To Move",Chicago-"25 Or 6 To 4" and the bloody awful lost Can track "Like Inobe God".This cut should've STAYED in the vault!!
For the price,'In Search...' is okay.

A SERIOUS MISTAKE IN A BOX.......2004-04-22

These CD's represent what happens when a record company has access to music they have to pay little or nothing for the rights to reproduce and market. The audio quality is atrocious and the music means nothing---"In Search of Space Indeed"! The quicker this arty-fact disappears the safer all unsuspecting buyers will be.

Very pleasant to see the oldies mentioned. Heavy acid influence on an r an b background. I have it on reel to reel . This copy has extra tracks , but it shows the widespread appeal of the band . Still releasing . Mind blowing then and now. Pink Fairies anyone?

The grandfathers of spacerock.......2000-04-02

I am not a Hawkwind follower (the contemporary Hawkwind is, well how should I put it..hmm...dead), but Dave Brock and co. did in their early days search for space, and I dare say found it on this very album. My favorite tracks are the very catchy "Masters of the universe" and the beautiful "Children of the sun". All the songs are great though, and In search of space can rightfully be called a classic.

I grew up on this record in the early 70's with the proper "special fx" as accompaniment... The peak moment for me was in 1972-1973 when the only tape in my (homebuilt) 8 track was a copy of this album which I used to play again and again in my 1960 Mercury Park Lane Turnpike Crusier. An old car with a bubble windshield, it was like driving a spaceship around the (Dallas) world and "In Search Of Space" was the perfect soundtrack for my cruising...

Or in other words, this, for me, is the essential Hawkwind. Web commentary sez Lemmy played bass on the lp but it does not sound like him, I tend to believe the credits on the lp instead. Dave Brock and Nik Turner, together, making sounds that they both agreed on, that is Hawkwind. Sing along to "You Should Do That, You Shouldn't Do That", play "We Took A Wrong Step Years Ago" for your girlfriend, my favorite other two songs are "Adjust Me" and "Master Of The Universe" (original) and the whole lp is really special, I cannot do a special thing here but all you zombies, enjoy! (And Terry Ollis, drums, are you still around? - your drums were perfect!...} - darms

some like the lemmy era, some enjoy the calvert period (after calvert, forget it). I could mention these later albums by name, but why bother? 'in search of space' is a genre-defining release on par with 'paranoid,' 'in rock,' 'demons and wizards,' 'salisbury,' 'fragile,' 'atom heart mother,' etc... this album introduced me to the notion that progressive rock was at least as much about adventure and wonder as it was merely about complexity and dexterity. while I am basically aware of what came before and (to varying degrees) painfully aware of what came after, 'in search of space' really is the all-time last word in cryptic, drug-addled, space-conjurations. if you've got the money and the inclination, buy every hawkwind album with 197 as the first three numbers of the release date. this band is more prolific than the grateful dead when it comes to compilations and live albums, so try to purchase discs wilth 1970's release dates and avoid live albums expect 'space ritual.'

great charm .. limited musical quality compared to later releases.. the developing Hawkwind sat very much in the late 60's musically

Production isn't great at times . Some tracks are good eg We took... some (only Dreaming, children on the sun, adjust me) do little for me. Master of the Universe became a great song live, the original studio version sounds to me tame and poorly produced.

As an evolving band this album has an innocent charm hence the rating
