An overlooked gem!.......2006-02-19
I've been a HUGE fan of Joe Lynn Turner ever since his Rainbow days. Glenn Hughes was a name I kept hearing but wasn't familiar with his work until I started really getting into Deep Purple in my 20's. I stumbled on all three HTP CD's here on Amazon and bought them immediately. The combination, alone, sold me. I have to say, the boys did not disappoint. This CD is friggin' hot. THE DEVIL'S ROAD and BETTER MAN are the major highlights, but the whole thing is great. The vocals do get a bit much at times, but hell, its rock 'n roll. The guitarist from Loudness guests on a couple of tracks and sounds great. The only downer is that John Sykes only graces one track. If you're a JLT fan like me, you HAVE to get this CD. While you're at it, get them all. You'll be glad you did.
Ride The Storm!!!.......2005-03-31
I picked this CD up at a shop that I frequently visit, and much to my surprise, I was shocked at what I heard! To be honest, I was expecting a mediocre attempt at making 70's style rock, like the latest Company of Snakes album! I should have realized that HTP is comprised of two veteran rockers that have been established for years in the music industry. Both Hughes and Turner sound great, and the music is surprisingly heavy at times! If you like Deep Purple/Rainbow style rock n roll, HTP takes it up to an all new level! Buy this CD now! In addition to this, check out the Brazen Abbot projects. Joe Lynn Turner has been involved in all of the Brazen Abbot projects, and they're great as well!
Awesome.......2003-09-19
This CD jams. Both JLT and Glenn sound great with Akira Takahashi from Loudness totally shredding like a wildman. A must buy!!!!!
really freaking awesome.......2003-05-14
glenn hughes has always been great, even in his stint with Black Sabbath...and turner was just as great in rainbow, both have been in deep purple, and both can rock you till you can't take it anymore....now they are one one cd to team up on you, a welcomed vocal assault!

The Best New Rock Disc in Years!.......2003-10-31
Glenn Hughes has always been a genius, from Deep Purple to Hughes/Thrall. This disc is no exception. This is the first "real" soulful hard rock music I've heard in many years. This disc definitely threatens to breath life back into "real" rock music!! Both Glenn and Joe Lynn Turner are exellent on this disc. They weave seemlessly back and forth on vocals and the effect is great. Aside from great rock, however, there are some great slower moments and also some more funk/soul influenced tunes that are also excellent. I highly recommend this disc!
Great rock, vocals overbearing.......2003-09-13
I'm a Deep Purple/Rainbow fan; I was hoping for solid, art-inflected rock 'n' roll, and I got it. Solid guitars and organs with great pumping beats. Catchy choruses. Screaming solos. Progressive breaks. It's all here and it's all tasty. The only downside to this album is that Glenn Hughes must have the most singularly annoying voice ever. Joe Lynn Turner, usually competent and capable on his Rainbow releases and on Deep Purple's "Slaves and Masters", seems to be trying to outdo GH in his over-the-top wails and yowls. "Mystery of the Heart", which features JLT alone on vocals, is a sturdy number with a singable chorus, and shows more restraint vocally than the other tunes. But really, Glenn, if you yowl all the time, it's going to lose its impact. Save it for the moments when it's really called for.
I still recommend the album for good solid rock-n-roll fans.
Nice Try .... But No Cigar!.......2003-09-07
This is a shakey release of "supposedly good hard rock" and it misses the mark for many reasons. Let me first make it known that I am a BIG! Deep Purple and Rainbow fan and I am a true fan of hard rock and heavy metal music in general and many other countless GOOD! bands that have some decent degree of originality to what they are doing. This release has very little of that kind of quality. The biggest problem I have with this CD is Glenn Hughes. The way you change the tone in your voice while you sing is not good, try to sing normal and maybe it would sound much better. Also what is up with that picture on the back of the CD?. You two guys are Trying to look cool and Fail Badly!!. Where are any pictures of the other people who contributed to this release. This is a Rip Off of Deep Purple, Rainbow and Cheesy Eighty's Metal. VERY little new or original here. This is a disapointing release people, be forewarned and save your money and not throw it away like I did.
Great Tunes from Beginning to End.......2003-06-01
This CD rocks from beginning to end. From "Devil's Road" and "You Can't Stop Rock and Roll" to "On the Ledge," Hughes and Turner give nothing but their best. "Mystery of the Heart" and "Heaven's Missing and Angel" are slower, but still good. If you like Deep Purple and Rainbow, this is a definite must have. If not, still give it a listen. After the disappointing turn rock has taken lately, this should up your spirits.
They don't make EM like this anymore !!.......2003-04-19
GREAT CD
< I heard this cd featured on Tripping Tree Internet Radio :....One Saturday morning , and it brought me back to a time when Rock & Roll was a very healthly thing ! Not ;like today

<
< but wait this is a new release !!! Hey maybe if these guys keep putting out great cds like this ,things aren't so bad after all !! I won't run down the track list.I'll just say if you love real Rock N Roll you'll love this CD. A Must for Deep Purple and Rainbow fans. Now just Buy it trust me !!!

Interesting collaboration by two second tier rockers........2005-09-07
I bought this Live In Tokyo with some hestitation. First off, Hughes already destroyed Japan with his own band of musical mercenaries in the 1990's, and a damn fine job he did. He also has managed to release a long string of always interesting musical projects for the world to hear. Jolene, on the other hand, has not exactly set the world on fire since leaving Rainbow and Deep Purple. I avoided the two HTP studio albums like the plague, but took the chance on a live setting either making or breaking them for me. Well, other than an original composition that's a complete steal of Highway Star as a concert opener, the album starts well. Too much howling and screaming for my taste, and being forced to listen to Jolene scream is a nerve shatterer. Both Joe and Glenn try to upstage each other, which is only annoying because their band is completely smoking them in every song. The band plays so well and so confidant, they could make anyone look good. They frequently carry the load of keeping the songs on track as both singers bask in the spotlight a bit too much. Still, despite the occasional goof, the musicians pull this one off very well. Some of the best versions of Rainbow songs ever played on a stage, by ANYBODY! (Yes, I'm talking to you folk boy. PLEASE, leave little mama at home one night and come out and play with the grownups, BRING YOUR STRAT!) With the chances of the MIB playing electric looking slimmer each year, maybe the only chance to hear these songs played right is by supportin HTP. God help me, I'm actually encouraging people to buy an album with Turner on it! If you like Purple and you liked Rainbow and you can stomach JLT and Glenn howling like banshees from time to time, this album is for YOU. The musicians are just superb and play some of the songs better than the originals did.
Right Where They Should Be.......2003-06-20
Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner are right where they should be on this album. Showcasing Deep Purple, Rainbow, and HTP songs, "Live in Tokyo" is an example of two veteran rockers who could play any new group under the table. Both sing with an intensity rarely found on live recordings from new "rock" bands. "Devil's Road" and "You Can't Stop Rock and Roll" are great opening numbers, and my favorites (among the new songs) on the CD. Of the older songs, "Death Alley Driver," "Mistreated," and "King of Dreams" are my favorites. "Death Alley Driver" sounds even better than on the Rainbow studio recording. Hughes turns out a soulful and emotional "Mistreated" -- not to be missed. Turner's voice, of course, is as sexy as ever on "King of Dreams."
All in all, it is definitely a top live recording. This is a cd that captures two veteran rockers that have survived the ups and the downs of the business. They are obviously in it for the music. Their Japanese backing band (different from the backing band on the studio version) never falter. The guitarist even sounds like Blackmore at times! The organist is ever-present. The drums at the beginning of "Ride the Storm" blew me away.

A sequel more than worthy of the original.......2005-02-15
In the last few years I have rediscovered the music of Glenn Hughes. Having only heard Glenn's 80s stuff which by all means wasn't that impressive, I went on a whim and bought Voodoo Hill simply because I liked the guitarist Dario Mollo. I could barely recognize the vocalist. Was this the same man from the less than enthusiastic Black Sabbath lineup of the mid eighties?
This finally encouraged me to seek out more Glenn Hughes material including Deep Purple and his own solo material. Finally I wondered upon the first Hughes Turner Project featuring, of course, Glenn and former Rainbow and Deep Purple vocalist Joe Lynn Turner. While I liked his Deep Purple contributions (though it was extremely short lived) I cant say his Rainbow material ever grew on me.
The Hughes Turner Project CD proved that my distaste for JLT was only skin deep and wasn't a reflection of the enormous talent the man posesses. The combination of the two of the most underrated vocalists in rock made for one hell of a CD.
Finally I opted to get the sequel, expecting another valiant and enjoyable effort, but in return I got was is damn near a flawless CD. The vocals display much more emotion that its predessor and the music has a wider range. From the ultra heavy, to the ultra melodic, to the ultra soulful, this disc only took a few spins before I realized it would not be leaving my CD player anytime soon.
Sadly, Glenn has informed the public that this will be the last HTP CD. And while that is bad news for fans like me who yearn for more, if ever there was a way to go out, then this is it!
Hughes and Turner Sound Great.......2004-07-24
First know that I'm an old Rainbow/Blackmore/Purple fanatic and felt cheated that Turner only put out three albums with Rainbow. On a chance trip to the record store, stumbled on Turner's latest JLT....give it a 7 out of 10, but good enough to get me looking for more. Then stumbled on the first HTP effort. Again, sounds good, but not great. Yet good enough to drop another $20 on HTP2. This is the most surprising, awesome, modern, jamming CD I've heard in a long time.
The biggest difference between this and the first HTP album is how well Turner and Hughes' voices are integrated in every song. "Going my Way" sounds like a long lost Rainbow track...I even looked to see if it was Blackmore on guitar for that song. If you were a Hughes fan with his early Purple or Gary Moore days, his voice has never sounded better. The songs are very upbeat, melodic, modern and worth listening to over and over. Turner's voice sounds great, a little raspy at times, but very good. "Time and Time again" is a very "Street of Dreams" sounding song. My favorite song is "Hold On", a Rush-riff driven song that Hughes nails the vocals on in the verses and the duo nails the choruses...very Mk III Purple-ish.
If you like Rainbow, Purple, Turner or Hughes.....GET THIS CD
Rock 'n' roll is not deat.......2003-11-26
I never thought that Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner would follow up the Hughes Turner Project album from last year. But now they have, and I must say that this album, titled "HTP II" is nearly as great as the first one. The majority of the songs are solid rock tunes in mid tempo with a perfect blend of the heavy and the melodic. A lot of the songs have a harder approach during the verses and a softer, more melodic chorus - a touch I think is very appealing! This album holds a lot of references to hard rock from the past; for example "Losing my head" have a "Kashmir-sounding-riff", while "Time and time again" reminds of the Rainbow semi ballads. But don't worry, the songs have a lot of originality to them and there's no rip off's. Rock 'n' roll is certainly not dead, something this album (along with others, like Deep Purple's "Bananas") prove. Highly recommended!

Hughes Turner Purple Rainbow Fans NEED This Show.......2007-01-11
Fans of Deep Purple, Rainbow should get this show.
Where many rock vocalists pickup weaker players and continue on...these guys come up with the goods.
The musicians play well. The guitar player sounds 'in the ballpark' with other Blackmore replacements. A little bit of excess notes, but good overall. A point off for the overdone licks.
The main attraction here is the vocals. Glenn and Joe DO sound great as ever. There is no problem with buried vocals. Hey...it's a good live recording.
Mixture of original HTP and older Purple, Rainbow songs. The newer tunes fit in well with the expected hits.
Very enjoyable.
Glenn Hughes Buring Japan Live w/JLT.......2002-11-23
This is a monumental, historical live recording between two of the best classic rock singers in the business. Both have impressive resumes and have been in the same band at different periods. Glenn Hughes, incredible voice of Trapeze, Deep Purple, Sabbath, John Norum, Voodoo Hill and countless others as been singing nearly 30 years. His co-hort, Joe Lynn Turner hasn't been in the business (professionally speaking) that long, but has a rich history of being another Deep Puple Alumni, as well as in Rainbow and Malmsteens band, as well as an extended catalog of solo and guest appearances. So the pairing of these two RAWK titans sounds great, and there studio album released earlier this year is excellent. Live they are again spectacular, or atleast let it sound like they can be. This CD recording does nothing for me. Trust me, I love Hughes, Turner, all their past projects, including their live offerings, but this just doesn't hit you over the head. The setlist is great full of Purple/Rainbow songs as well as songs from their HTP CD, and backing musicians are fine (especially the Japanese guitar player, who carbon copies Richie's playing almost to a 'T').
It's just Glenn's voice is sort of grounded in the mix, and he just really can't be heard (to what I am use to hearing him live). JLT is good, but again suffering from the same low vocal mix problem. The overall sound is a D, could of been better, the performance is a solid B. Like I said everyone is in fine condition, it just doesn't sound like a live recording.

Why aren't albums like this released in the States?.......2002-05-01
Why do we have to get imports to get good albums like this? Glenn Hughes' voice sounds awesome on this CD-- listen to his solo bit in the middle of "Ride The Storm". Turner's got a great voice as well. Where have all the great rock singers (like these guys) gone to?? Most of today's bands have the singer as their weakest link.... GOODBYE!! It's a shame albums like this aren't promoted here and get airplay... this should be a top seller instead of the junk that is so popular nowadays.
You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll!.......2002-04-08
What a fantastic sound!! Not being a huge Turner fan, I was a bit skeptical when I first heard about this collaboration. But this is a great album!! Very much in the vein of classic '70s, hard rock. Hughes (as always) slays with his vocal range and soulful bass. And JJ Marsh is dead on with his guitar work here. It is great to hear Sykes work with Hughes as well... hopefully we will see more with Sykes in the future. If you like Hughes and just great rock in general, you must own this album!!
You can't stop rock 'n' roll.......2002-04-05
This album is great! It's back to some basic ground for hard rock and it pleases me very much to see that melodic rock still have some upholders. Both singers do their very best and it's nice to notice that Glenn Hughes have left some of his previous 'slow-lowtuned-heavy-stuff' behind. My suggestion is that you buy this album as soon as possible. Turn the volume up real loud and just enjoy one of the best albums in many years.
Melodic rock is back with a vengance!.......2002-03-26
This is the best CD either Glenn Hughes or Joe Lynn Turner have put out in years. And that's saying alot, because seperately they've put out some of the best stuff I've listened too! This CD will take you back to the days of Deep Purple, and yet it manages to be fresh and exciting! Highlights include "Mystery Of The Heart", "Devil's Road", "Missed Your Name" and the best song on the CD, the Glenn Hughes/John Sykes penned "Heaven's Missing An Angel." This CD mixes rock and funk into a melodic tapistry gauranteed to delight the soul. If you like either Hughes or Turner, you can't go wrong with this CD.

Customer Reviews:
And I'm riding the Devil's Road...........2005-11-12
This is a very good album. I bought it for the new live versions of the Raibow/ Deep Purple/ Black Sabbath songs on it, but was even more impressed with the new tracks. As previosly reviewed, the sound quality is excellent. This was one CD I was glad to have purchased.
Crap? no way!.......2004-07-09
This is a right-in-your-face rock & roll, with lots of feeling (courtesy of Mr. Hughes & Mr. Turner, two of the most talented singers and songwriters of all time) and with hot versions of Purple, Rainbow and Sabbath's classics. A must buy for classic hard rock fans. The reviewer below doesn't have any idea of what true rock is all about...
This album confirms that Glenn is "the voice of rock and roll". Joe is the one when feeling comes around. Together, these guys ara dynamite!!!
Crap ..........2004-01-21
Glenn Hughes is class, but this band does not cut it. Buy Burning Japan Live.
A Live Album as it Should Be.......2003-06-28
This live album encompasses some of the best from the recently released HTP studio album, Deep Purple, and Rainbow. The sound and performances are consistent throughout. Often, new bands sound terrible in concert, but Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner do not falter, indicative of their talent and tenure in the rock world. Their Japanese backing band are quite talented musicians in their own right. The frantic organ playing in "Death Alley Driver," the guitar work in "You Can't Stop Rock and Roll" and "Dark Days," and the thunderous drums in "Ride the Storm" all attest to their talent. However, this album is not without it's more subtle songs, such as "King of Dreams," a wonderful treat from Turner's Deep Purple days. Also, "Mistreated" showcases Hughes's wonderful vocal and bass-playing skills.
Turner and Hughes share the spotlight; their egos do not crowd the cd, which is a benefit for the listener. It seems that their wild days have passed them and that they now concentrate on the music, which is, in fact, the most important thing anyhow. This CD is a definite must-buy. If you love Rainbow and Deep Purple, you'll love this. If not, then you'll probably still like it. Given the type of "rock" dominating the airwaves lately, this will feel like a cool breath of fresh air. If you like it, I'd also suggest you pick up their studio album, which contains wonderful songs not present on the live album.
