Zez Confrey (1895-1971) may not be a household name, but his 1921 masterpiece "Kitten on the Keys" certainly is. The Illinois-born composer studied the classics growing up, but somehow the temptation of Vaudeville sneaked its way into his compositions and he found success writing catchy ragtime miniatures with goofy names ("Wise Cracker Suite," "Dizzy Fingers," "Blue Tornado"). Republic of Georgia pianist Eteri Andjaparidze performs 24 of Confrey's works with technical perfection and plenty of spirit--two requirements for these compositions--but sounds a tad robotic on some numbers. Between "Kitten" and 1959's "Fourth Dimension," Confrey explored blues, rags, Latin rhythms, and--of course--jazz, but the real highlight here is a slow number, the four-movement Moods of a New Yorker. In sum, this a great tribute featuring great music, perfect for fans of George Gershwin, Ferde Grofé, Jelly Roll Morton, and Joseph Lamb. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Piano master.......2007-07-30
Zez Confrey is part Gershwin, part Joplin and part Art Tatum, yet still unique - you pretty much can't miss with that combination. The music is totally original, complex, melodic and beautiful. The performances, by Eteri Audjaparidze, are flawless and heart-felt; I think Confrey would be pleased with her interpretations.
Oh, Kitten...it's a Must Have.......2004-12-29
Hats off to Naxos for releasing this absolutely perfect tribute to Zez Confrey - it was high time, someone had to do it, and Naxos has done Confrey real justice. One would expect caricature of his work, rather than the respectful, honest, accurate renditions of his work featured on this album.
I discovered my love for Confrey thanks to the Aeolian Hall Birth of Rhapsody in Blue album (another of my reviews covers that great one), which featured a small selection of his compositions. The distinct, unique sound of his work snagged me immediately, and so I was thrilled to come upon this little Naxos treat.
Every piece on the album is sheer delight, but several do stand out from the rest. "Kitten on the Keys" (Confrey's most famous composition, here done full justice), "Meandering" (which just glides and lilts along like feathers on a breeze), "Kinda Careless" (a sensuous, seductive little number), "Yokel Opus" (a snappy little foxtrot), "Coaxing the Piano" (which seems almost an homage to 'Twelfth Street Rag', in a skewed way), "Movie Ballet" (which sounds exactly like its title would suggest), and "Rhythm Venture" (so gracefully syncopated, it's practically a marvel).
Any and all Confrey and jazz fans should consider this album as required listening, and well worth owning. The price alone is reason enough - you cannot go wrong with Naxos' rates. But even if it were four times the price, it would still be a bargain.
Almost , Nearly, perfect.......2003-10-25
Wonderful selection of pieces, most of these are lesser-known Confrey and tend to represent his more "Serious" music. Perhaps because of that the pianist (a superb performer) tends to emphasize their concert qualities over their popular music aspects. This is only a tiny complaint. There's a lot of excellect music here, and at Naxos' low price it's a bargan.
Much more than Kitten On the Keys.......2002-05-16
If you thought an album of Zez Confrey music would be track after track like Dizzy Fingers or Kitten On the Keys, you are in a for a pleasant surprise with this superb CD.
The performances of the said party pieces are fast, furious and fun, but there are also some great blues renditions, and some lyrical, reflective pieces.
I would have preferred if the CD had included a few more of the well-known pieces like My Pet, Poor Buttermilk and You Tell 'Em, Ivories, but the many pieces I had never heard of are interesting, and are played beautifully.
Zany yet poetic!.......2000-09-04
Once again, in its "American Classics" series, Naxos has pulled a pleasant surprise rabbit out of the hat. Zez Confrey must be a new name for virtually everyone, unless they are well past my own age, and I don't go back quite that far. The name was certainly new for me, but a few of the pieces on this disc brought memories flooding back, most likely because my parents once had them coupled on an ancient 78 shellac.
Confrey (1895 - 1971) had been relegated pretty much to the dustbin of history before this release. But he did have his days in the sun between the two world wars. Undoubtedly his brightest moment was when he shared billing with George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman on the occasion of the premiere for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, where Confrey had the stage in the first half of the concert and Gershwin in the second. For the most part, after that February, 1924 "An Experiment in Modern Music" concert of Whiteman's, the paths of Gershwin and Confrey began to diverge; Gershwin was, to put it simply, an overnight success.
All of the music on this album is fun, and virtually all of it demands virtuosic pianistic ability, which Confrey must certainly have possessed. Listening to it is like taking a trip down memory lane, back to the popular music in the first third of the previous century. There are pieces which have clear roots in ragtime, embellished upon and brought forward by a few decades, and at least a selection or two which sound very much like Gershwin preludes in their "bluesy" feel. It's also clear that Confrey was not unaware of the classical music of the period, because a few of the pieces capture the idioms of the piano music of Rachmaninoff and Ravel of that period (although they soon veer off into "Confrey territory"). If you listen carefully, you'll even hear a passing reference or two to Chopin. But, like the Rachmaninoff and Ravel musical allusions, these too are in fact just "passing references."
But most of the album is pure Confrey-style pianistic wizardry: Fleet fingers, crossing hands, syncopations and rhythmic "irregularities" with the colorfully descriptive titles of "Meandering", "Coaxing the Piano" and "Stumbling." And his two most famous pieces (which, probably, many of us have never heard), "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers." (In fact, it was "Dizzy Fingers" and "Stumbling" which must have been the coupling on that ancient 78, because they were immediately recognizable.)
Eteri Andjaparidze is an excellent technician in this work, which can be very demanding of technique if it is to be pulled off properly. By and large, she does very well by it. In particular, she succeeds in capturing the passing allusions to the classical piano music of the time. If I had my druthers, I might ask for a little more panache, or insouciance, if you like, in the Confrey specialities noted in the previous paragraph. But who can quibble, especially at the Naxos price, without appearing to be a piker?
Neat stuff for a refreshing change of pace, with an opportunity to hear an hour's worth of music by someone who had been ignored for too long. That's a "get it" recommendation!

Hypocrisy becomes moody - 2.5 stars.......2006-08-23
Penetralia and Osculum Obscenum are two amazing albums. Once you pop in this disc, you might not recognize them. Keyboards start to become a major instrument in Hypocrisy on this album. Its not used on each song, but it is prevalent. I just cant get into this album as much as their previous albums. I actually sold my copy of this album, cause it just doesnt do it for me. There are song good songs, but overall the album just was a disapointment for me.
superb...SUUUPERB......!!!!!!!.......2006-03-18
what an execution... what riffs, what tempo. The man behind it all, peter Tagtgren, the so many times referred to as the mastermind of metal and its genre of death metal!! the f#$% riffs is what kills me im listining to it as i write and man cant get enough words out...oh and the solos, so gracefully created....YOUR MISSIN OUT DAMNIT!!!!BUY It!!!!!!!!
...ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE !!!.......2005-05-29
If you have never heard anything by Hypocrisy, then you don't know what you're missing out on. This in my opinion is their best release, with Osculum Obscenum, and Abducted right along side. Everytime Hypocrisy release a new CD, you are sure to be surprised. This is the album where Hypocrisy start to make their music heavily emotional, which is not really heard on any death metal release before 1994 (in this quality anyway).
This is an epic album, yet it still retains it's underground traits. This is Hypocrisy's big step forward in many aspects, firstly, Peter Tagtgren takes on the role of vocals/guitar, replacing Masse Bromberg (vocals on first 2 albums), Peter used to be on guitars only, now there are only 3 members in the band. Secondly, the structure of the songs, the sound qulity, and imagination put into this album are all improved on this album by 300%. This album has fast tracks, slow melodic tracks, progressive tracks, and each song has something special to make you remember it and hum it when you're not listening to it.
If you want death metal's best, look no further than this CD. This is the BEST! I rate this album 6/5, but the limit is 5/5, that is why the album is called The Fourth Dimension.
I prefer the latter stuff.......2005-05-20
Im not a huge fan of hypocrisy,Its not that i dont like them its just not a band that appealed to me largely.I do own a couple of hypocrisy albums and a bunch of Various tracks(that i picked up on samplers and stuff)but i just find this album slightly boring.Ive never been a fan of slow doom/Death style metal and this album did very little to change my mind.
The songs are too long and slow,The album drags and after about 20 minutes i was just wanting the track to end.Dont get me wrong i love my metal and if its doom/Death you are after It may well be a masterpiece,But if your new to this style of music proceed slowly and with a lot of patience.
Fourth Dimension.......2004-03-04
I just got this CD today, along with The Arrival, They both kill!, If you haven't heard Hypocrisy before Abducted, then beware, this is a bit different, more gutteral growls, anyways, this CD kills, killer vocals, killer riffs, killer drumming, and the production is good, So far I own, Fourth Dimension, Hypocrisy, Into the Abyss, Catch 22, and The Arrival, they all kick A$$, each are different, killer band, my freind got me into them, and I don't regret buying any of they're cds, My favourite tracks, "Apocolypse", "Slaughtered" "The Fourth Dimension" "Mind Corruption", but they all own, I encourage you to buy this if your a fan of the band, or a Death Metal fan.

Pretty decent album. Always good to support local talent (Florida). I met these guys and they are all humble and put good effort into what they do. Their live performances are solid and in my opinion better than this album.

I saw these guys at the Bob Marley Fest in Houston Texas. They were the closing headliners..they came onstage wearing white camouflage suits; no one knew what to expect and suddenly they busted into some heavy dub vibes. This Cd is definately a must have for any world beat...actually any music lover. It has an authentic vibe. My favorite track is Fourth Dubmension..one of the wickedest reggae dubs I ever heard.

essential material to understand Stratovarius.......2006-03-12
Clear that this album isn't a complete melodic work like episode or visions.. but recreate your mind to tell you how stratovarius become what it is. (remember that always first metal albums are the real fans's favorite.
In this album appears Twilight Simphony which one to me is the best ever stratovarius song.
The voice of Kotipelto is clearly different to the nexts albums and made it a special piece.
To be honest this is not the most easy strato work, but i think it is the (equals as Vision) a essential Album for who feels a really stratovarius Fans. (Like me that assisted to 3 concerts en Chile.. including farewell tour last year)
Timo Kotipelto's debut with Stratovarius is a classic!.......2006-02-13
This is the first Stratovarius album with Timo Kotipelto on vocals and it's a classic! Timo's range is over 4 octaves and he uses it perfectly. Timo Tolkki's composing is excellent and this has album has some of his best solos. Timo Tolkki is far from an Yngwie clone...he is influenced by Yngwie but his solos do sound different. Tolkki also puts a lot of emotion into his solos and shreds away aswell. This is a power metal classic.
1.Against the Wind- 10/10 A great fast opener. An insant classic. The riff is great and the vocals soar. Timo Kotielpto's great scream leads into an inredible guitar solo which is both fast and melodic. Cool lyrics too.
2.Distant Skies- 10/10 Another great fast song. The guitar riff is awesome and the vocals are amazing as always. The lyrics are great too. An unbelievable guitar solo too. Another classic.
3.Galaxies- 10/10 Another great song. This song is slower but they keyboards are great and the 80's drum sound is awesome. More amazing vocals from Timo Kotipelto too. The guitar solo is excellent and has a lot of emotion. This has an 80's feel to it.
4.Winter- 10/10 An amazing epic ballad. The intro is amazing. The guitar part is brilliant and the vocals blew my mind. Kotipelto hits such high notes you won't recognize him. Kotipelto's performance throughout the song is inspiring. An amazing emotional guitar solo too. One of the best ballads ever
5.Stratovarius- 10/10 A great neo classical instrumental. This is up there with Malmsteen and Jason Becker. A lot of great melodic shredding and plenty of speed changes. One of my favorite instrumentals and it never gets boring or old.
6.Lord of the Wasteland- 10/10 Another great fast song. The intro keyboard part is great and sounds a bit like the exorcist theme. The guitar riff is great too and when mixed with the keyboards sounds amazing. More incredible vocals from Kotipelto too. Another jaw dropping guitar solo with a cool unaccompanied part. Another melodic masterpeice.
7.030366- 8.5/10 A cool long instrumental intro. The intro is a little too long but the song is great anyway. More amazing vocals from Kotipelto and another great guitar solo from Timo Tolkki
8.Nightfall- 10/10 An amazing slower song. The softer intro is great and this is one of the best songs ever. Timo Kotipelto's vocals are incredible and the guitar riff is great. The lyrics are brilliant and the guitar solo is beautiful. A true classic.
9.We Hold the Key- 10/10 Another amazing song. Again this song is slower and the music is amazing. The guitars, the drums and the bass all sound perfect. The soft part is great and the heavy part rocks. Timo Kotipelto's vocals are mind blowing and the lyrics are brilliant. The bridge and solo are great as always too. The solo has a lot of energy and is very melodic. The second soft part is beautiful too. A brilliant complex epic.
10.Twilight Symphony- 10/10 The intro is awesome and this melodic song is brilliant. Kotipelto's vocals soar and the riff is great. The violins add a nice touch and this has to be one of the fastest guitar solos ever. This song has a great soft part too. An insant classic.
11.Call of the Wilderness- 10/10 An awesome short acoustic instrumental. It's great for what it is but it's too short.
Overall this isn't as amazing as Visions but it's damn close! if you've never heard Stratovarius than I'd start with Visions but you can't go wrong with any of there albums! The songwriting is amazing and the band performances are incredible too. This is similar to Helloween, Rainbow, Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen, Dio, Queensryche, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. This album has everything...ballads, fast rockers, slow rockers, great instrumentals, brilliant epics, amazing vocals, killer solos....everything you could ask for in a metal album.
Timo Kotipelto- Vocals
Timo Tolkki- Guitar, backing vocals
Tuomo Lassila- Drums
Jari Kanulainen- Bass
Antti Ikonen- Keyboards
On the cusp of a breakthrough.......2006-01-11
This album always strikes me as similar to Episode. Both have great tracks and yet both rarely get a spin at my place due to the inclusion of so many naff tracks. An example of the former from this album would be Distant Skies. Not the first time that a band has shown it's mortality and human fear of flying and it won't be the last. The inherent humour in the subject (excepting Saxons 747 - Strangers in the Night) is always fun.
As for the rest, well - just go straight to Visions. And if you despair at the constant restraint shown by this band get a copy of Visions live.
Great album by one of my favorite power metallers.......2005-09-15
This album is great and definitely doesn't deserve such a low rating.
Not as good as Visions but still great!.......2005-09-13
This album isn't as great as Episode, Visions or Dreamspace but it's still a solid album that should get more than a 3 1/2 star rating.
