5 out of 5 stars amazing, this is a must for any metallian, do not overlook this, pure power metal mastery.......2007-03-31

hello fellow metallians, god i love this band. dark moor fit nicely along side bands like dragonland, freternia, vhaldemar, arwen, vision divine, cryonic temple, highlord, axenstar and so on. this has to be one of the most talented bands in power metal that i have heard in a very long time. i think dark moor made the best line up change that they ever could have. they dropped the female vocals which were not bad but were not as awesome as their new singer, this guy has such range, the way he sings is amazing, listen to the first song before the seal. this band writes amazing hook laden riffs with mellodic vocals and choruses that revolve in your head for days. the sing along choruses and amazing riffs along with the cool keyboards and light symphonics are more than enough to satisfy my metal cravings.the last album titled dark moor was awesome as well and had the same male singer, that cd is awesome , it was a little more symphonic and or epic. on this album they have went with more of a straight forward sound and added some awesome choruses and catchy lyrics. the 8th song beyond the sea is superb, i cant get enough of it. #8 along with#1 are the top songs here and could be hit singles, not to mention that the other tunes on here are awesome as well. i would love to hear dark moor remake their first 2 cds with their new singer, sort of like iced earth did on days of purgatory where they had mat barlow redo all their old classic songs. that would be very cool, and if any of the band members happen to read this review please consider doing that. we metallians would surely eat it up. i am eagerly awaiting my pre orderd copy of the new album tarot. i can not wait to get that album. but for now i will continue to crank this bad boy and i must say that all you true metallians out there are in for a real treat when you get your hands on this album, and dont pass up the last album titled dark moor, because it to deserves a place in your list of top metal albums. my metal collection over the years has reached a staggering 1600+ all true metal cd's and there is not one of them i dont enjoy and love, but this is with out question in my top 20 cds of all time. metallians enjoy, sit back crank this baby up and rejoice at how great power metal can be, espescially when in the hands of masters like dark moor, your brother in metal, brandon whitson 25 of north carolina.

    3 out of 5 stars .......2005-09-04

This is heavy metal that's pretty laid-back and ear-friendly. At times it can be very majestic, which is when this Spanish band shines even more, and at other times the material sounds very straightforward, which makes it predictable. The verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure is applied firmly on most songs, but Dark Moor does it with such nobility. Mandatory ballads like "Green eyes" do not sound forced or romantic, which is a plus unlike many metal bands out there experimenting with their softer sides. Romero's singing accentuates the music very nicely. It doesn't require him to scream or hit long-range notes; it simply gets the job done according to what the music calls for. Tracks like "The silver key" and the title track itself are very traditional, and the use of keyboards here and there add color to the music. This is recommended listening for those relaxing Sunday afternoons, but also expect top-notch musicianship.

    4 out of 5 stars they changed..........2005-06-30

First off let me just say that this band does not sound like rhapsody. I dont know why people think that cause they dont at all. This album changed quite a bit, there is no chick vocals that im aware of. This album is really concentrated on time and is a bit slower on tempo. Dont get me wrong its not all slow i just mean that it is showing best that this band makes masterpeice albums. If you like this bands older stuff and if your really into the girl vocals then watch out because this album is a bit differant, but strives into patience and perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Quite the unique melodic metal band with female vocals.......2004-01-26

Dark Moor is a great Italian band. Elisa brings forth a female voice like you've never heard. She's not operatic like Tarja of Nightwish and not angelic like Sabine of Edenbridge. Instead, she's just flat out good. She isn't like Power Symphony's vocalist, either. Dark Moor uses a lot of choirs.

There are no epics on this CD and the first track is a short intro. For those of you into beauty in a very soft form, "The Sound of the Blade" is perhaps the most beautiful song out there. I love quite a few other ballads more, but the pianos, choirs, and synthesizers/keyboards make this song AMAZING. Too bad its track 7 and you can't listen to a sample... Take my word for it - do you like Season of Change? Do you like Don't You Cry? Do you like Lamento Eroico? Then you'll love this one.

Speed is one of the harder things to explain with Dark Moor. Recall the opening song on "A Time Nevercome" by Secret Sphere if you've heard of it. Remember how the speed is constantly changing? That's what Dark Moor sounds like most of the time. They can go from super fast drums with a super fast bass to mid-tempo just like that with perfect transition. One time, I came up with a great thing to say about Dark Moor. It was to say that Dark Moor is Kenziner + someone. I can't remember who, but I guess if you like Kenziner, you should like Dark Moor.

Overall, the sound of Dark Moor is quite beautiful. Keyboards are all over their sound. On their newer CD, Between Light and Darkness, the first 3 tracks are like all acoustic or something, and there is almost no bass sound. Track 4, "The Echoes of the Sea", is an instrumental song that I don't know how to describe yet. Its not all that atmospheric. Its almost newage sounding. Tracks 5-8 are more like what you hear on tracks 2-6 and 8-10 on this album (7 is the ballad discussed above). Tracks 7 and 8 total for about 20 minutes. Also, Dark Moor is the band who did a cover of Helloween's Halloween, found on the CD Keeper of Jericho. Good luck finding that CD for less than $35.00... The original is on Keeper... Part I.

There's a lot to say about a band like Dark Moor. They can closely be compared to Secret Sphere, only with a female vocalist. That's really all there is to say unless you wanted a track-by-track explanation. When you get the time, please go read some of my other reviews and say if they were helpful to you or not.

4 out of 5 stars A great power metal buy........2003-02-13

All I have to say is Children of Bodom meets Rhapsody. This album had enchanting melodies, excellent guitars, and amazing keyboards. I also recomend it if you are annoyed by the overly powerful voices like those of Rhapsody.

    4 out of 5 stars decent effort.......2003-01-06

This is good ol' 80s power metal, crisp and clean as it comes, with some nice strong vocal work by Elisa (no last name). Nothing groundbreaking, but a solid effort nonetheless, and a CD that I enjoy listening to on an occasional basis. If I came across something else by them, I'd certainly check it out.

    5 out of 5 stars Impressed.......2002-10-27

I have to agree with Patrick - this is one of the best symphonic metal CDs that I have - the music is great - and has good variation - not just the same stuff over again - a bit af clasical influence here and there. My favourite track is "Quest for the eternal flame" and "Notre Dame". If you liked "Stormbringer Ruler" by Domine and "Luca Turilli"'s "King of the Nordic Twillight" - you will like this one a lot. If you want to buy a Dark Moor CD - buy this one

    3 out of 5 stars A subjective critic.......2001-12-08

Impressive at first, but I use to get bored at the second listenning. Technicaly, there isn't any sign of weekness, guitar and keyboard are impressive. SilverLake and Somewhere in dream are my favorite songs. But I get bored of the voice of Elisa (too much acute). If you like that type of music, i would recommend to look at Rhapsody.

      5 out of 5 stars A solid release!.......2005-06-07

Although Dark Moor certainly isn't new to the whole melodic metal scene, I think it's safe to say that the new "era" of the band started with their self-titled release with new vocalist Alfred Romero. Although the fan-base of Dark Moor was somewhat divided between the old, neo-classical sound and the new, more straight-forward sound, I can safely say that I prefer the new to the old.

Beyond The Sea, Dark Moor's fifth full-length release, is easily my favorite. One of the first things I noticed about the album was the great amount of balance and diversity present. There is no single element that is overdone or blown out of proportion - every element, from the speed to the symphonics to the heaviness, are used with class. It's rare to find an album like this (in which I am not downing bands that focus on one thing, for I love them too), and it's a pleasant surprise when one does roll around.

As for the structure and songs present on the album, I have to that the whole record flows especially well, with some definite highlights, such as the epic The Silver Key, the mid-paced title-track or the classic power metal number Going On. Every song has its own identity, whilst also possessing the overall identity of Dark Moor.

To sum it all up, if you're a fan of melodic metal with a fair amount of diversity and class, I highly recommend Dark Moor's latest masterpiece Beyond The Sea. You may find yourself quite surprised as I did!

4 out of 5 stars Old Stuff Rehashed.......2005-09-10

I don't know why Dark Moor released this album. The reasoning was apparently was as a last hurrah for the departing often good sometimes awful singer, Ellysa C. Martin. It's certainly not a best of album, since their best work doesn't appear here. That doesn't mean this is not a worthwhile album to purchase.

What "Between Light and Darkness" appears to be, is a grouping of songs that didn't appear on their regular studio albums, bits and pieces from here and there. In fact many of the initial songs have the feel of medieval folk music, like "Blackmore's Night" and the fourth track, "Echoes of the Sea" is an instrumental chamber music piece. It's nice but it's not like there other albums. It's not power metal. The fifth track, "Mystery of Goddess" is back to their original style and the last three songs, all good, are bonus tracks from various previously released albums.

Overall, it's not bad. Just don't expect the usual Dark Moor sound that's on the fabulous albums, "Gates of Oblivion" and "Halls of the Olden Dreams".

4 out of 5 stars Leaves You Wanting Moor.......2007-02-07

If you're a fan of European power metal with lots of smphonic touches akin to the first Rhapsody album, this is one for you to check out. The female singer isn't stellar, but she's not terrible either, and she isn't trying to sound like singers from other female-fronted bands such as Nightwish, Epica, etc. My main complaint about this album would be that the songs sound very much alike; some more variatoin in the songwriting would help the tunes stand out more, rather than running together. Still a solid album overall; I plan to check out more of their catalog when I have the chance.
Do note that more recent albums feature a different singer 9and several other lineup changes too). Some folks seem to like the new lineup just fine, while others think the band went downhill after the change. I can't say, having not heard the newer material

4 out of 5 stars by far the best of the Rhapsody imitations.......2006-08-22

I love old Rhapsody, so I have spent a lot of time and money tracking down bands that are in that same genre of symphonic fantasy metal. Dark Moor is far and away the best of these.

The songwriting is excellent: the lyrics probably better overall than Rhapsody (which admittedly isn't saying much), and the symphonic compostions and interludes are superb.

Musically Dark Moor is, to my ears, a clone of Rhapsody, right down to the guitar tone, except for one thing: the use of a female vocalist. She is the sole weakness of this band. While she is much better than the awful Nightwish type of wailing wench (that is, the cold-fish opera singer who just walks through it using technique, hitting the notes without actually trying to breathe any life into the lyrics), the singer here is just too erratic. Her sense of pitch is fallible and at a couple of points, she is singing out of time and out of tune, which is just inexcusable. The explanation for why these parts were not re-recorded on such a well-produced recording would likely be that she wasn't capable of doing any better. The effect of hearing this great band and this great material fronted by this amateurish wailer is strange, to say the least -- like a bad paint job on a brand new car, or discovering a hair in what was, up to that point, the best bowl of soup you'd ever had...without her, this would be a five-star album all the way, and fully up to the level of Rhapsody themselves.

However, there is good news: she left the band some time ago and they evidently got a real singer...but in the meanwhile check this album out. The singer sings like she means it, at least, and as erratic as she is, she doesn't kill the album. This is such strong work you could pull somebody off the street at random to do the vocals and it wouldn't kill it (unless he or she was a black or death metal vocalist, or a rapper, or something. Yuck!).

4 out of 5 stars Good album but not one of the best.......2005-05-27

This band rules! Full of virtuosity!
Every track has its own magic. It could be better but it's really good.
In case that you don't know this genre try the "...Oblivion" album, that one is almost perfect.

5 out of 5 stars A stimulant that Takes Your Breath Away.......2005-05-05

If this CD became embedded in my car stereo, I would probably not bother to have it forcibly removed for quite a while. This is a classic: I venture to say that it will still be seen decades from now as a masterpiece.

'Hall of the Olden Dreams' exhibits a tremendous improvement from their debut Shadowland, which unfortunately has been described elsewhere in at least one review as "deplorable." That critique is harsh; rather, I consider Shadowland to be a document showcasing the creativity of a band destined to blossom into one of the finest metal acts so far this century.
With 'Hall' we notice that Elisa has either improved her singing skills or that the mixing has smoothed the edges of her vocals. Really, Elisa is what (who) ultimately makes Dark Moor rise above. While not displaying the seductive qualities / operatic voice of Tarja T. [Nightwish], there is nonetheless something extremely intoxicating about Elisa's powerful vocals.
The lyrics are a little bit funny translation-wise, but I give the band credit for their attempts -- hey, I certainly can't write original lyrics in Spanish! (There is nothing more pathetic than an American metalhead complaining about the heavy accent of foreign singers).

Most of the tracks exhibit a certain mastery of music (at least evident in the keyboards) that is realized more fully in their 3rd album, 'Gates of Oblivion.' It seems that most critics prefer 'Gates' over 'Hall,' but 'Hall' is the disc that I keep returning to. The songs on their 2nd album are not marred by unrestrained double bass drums -- a shortcoming of their 3rd album.
Simply put, the 2nd album is catchier. I feel that "Silver Lake" is the highlight of the album, along with the closing track (classical scales abound). These two songs especially are breathtaking, leaving the listener with a distinct impression of genius in composition.

      5 out of 5 stars Truly a Gem .......2004-12-07

Yet a nother 5 /5 rating for Dark Moor. I first heard these guys like in...March I think it was and I could not stop saying "WOW" I heard the short clips Amazon offers to listen to and I had to buy it. This is yet a nother gem I bought on a hunch and I have to say I would be les of a metal fan with out this album. I am a Huge fan of Adagio, Blind guardian Rhapsody and Heavenly. This album has the most of B.G., and Rhapsody . Songs to anticipate when you order are The Bells of Notre Dame, Beyond the fire, and Somewhere in Dreams. There is no question that any one a fan of good clean power metal needs to buy this one, and so does every one else. And any one not familiar to this band they have a woman singer! Though she's not as beautiful of a voice as Tarja from nightwish she's still good, I'd say she's like a girl Hansi (If I can say that) from B.G. So go out and get this one you'll love it.

This is another very good album from the Spanish epic metal band Dark Moor. At the time of this recording, they were fronted by a female vocalist -- which is unusual in this particular subgenre of metal.

Elisa's vocals are strong and the instrumentals are also truly beautiful. It is hard to make a "best of" list for this album, since every track is a highlight. Highlights among the highlights would include Nevermore, Starmaker, Night of the Age and Truth for Me.

It is hard to find fault with this CD. The only complaints I have with this nearly perfect recording (and they are minor) is that the tempo of the songs rarely varies and the drums seem to be too far forward in the mix. Still, this is a great recording from a great band.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Moor - Gates of Oblivion.......2004-11-26

OHMYGOD! This album is incredible. Any Metal fan out there who has not yet listened to this band is missing out. I know that many Metal fans cringe at the thought of symphonic elements in heavy music, but this really rocks! This is Symphonic Power Metal at its finest. Great band, brilliant album!

        5 out of 5 stars NO! IT'S NOT YES!.......2003-09-03

I don't mean to be glib with my review title but these guys do sound eerily like Yes on some songs. Actually, these guys sound like a combination of Rhapsody, Yes and Therion. If you haven't heard some of these groups, that means they sound good.

The first time I heard Epic Power Metal. I thought, I could really get into this if they would slow down just a little, especially on the faster songs. I was listening to the self proclaimed "Hollywood Metal" of Rhapsody.
The reason I thought this, was that Rhapsody along with Dragonforce and a couple other groups play the percussion at machine gun speed. In fact it was so fast I'm wondering if it was computerized because I don't see how anyone could move their arms and legs that fast

Then I discovered some other groups that played similar music but at a slightly slower pace that would allow my overtaxed mind to absorb and appreciate the music. Now, everyone knows that a lot of Power Metal bands are from Italy but most of the bands I found which played at a tempo that was appropriate for my taste were from various other countries. There was Sonata Arctica from Finland, Dragonland from Sweden, Freedom Call from Germany, Kamelot from (surprise)U.S.A. and last but certainly not least, Dark Moor from Spain

The Spanish melodic power metal band's third release The Gates of Oblivion captivates the listener from the first track. Each song is a masterpiece of epic power metal with the support of an orchestra and a couple choirs. Dark Moor continues to combine thrilling arrangements and grand melodies with the ingredients of classic heroic epic power metal.

This album is an invitation to loose ones self in the music, each song is a highlight, a new world that comes upon the listener. When the song "By the strange path of destiny" is opened by the unbelievably beautiful voice of Elisa C. Martin, you melt away. That's right the singer is a woman. I was surprised too, her voice could easily be a man. In fact she sounds a lot like Jon Anderson. The Gates of Oblivion is almost 56 minutes of top shelf melodic power metal.

        5 out of 5 stars Holy crap!.......2003-06-21

Thisi album came out of nowhere and blew me away! I was already familiar with the more popular (stateside) powermetal bands like Guardian or Rhapsody, but this lesser-profile band is just as good as any of the big names! You can do no wrong with this album, everything is as it should be: epic songwriting, tight musicianship, and great production. There's not a whole lot to say; if you're familiar with power metal, you really need to get to know Dark Moor!

        5 out of 5 stars DELIGHTFUL,SIMPLY DELIGHTFUL.......2003-01-16

The Spanish melodic power metal band's latest release The Gates of Oblivion captivates the listener from the first track. Each song is a masterpiece of epic power metal. Dark Moor continues to combine thrilling arrangements and grand melodies with the ingredients of classic heroic epic power metal. I believe The Gates of Oblivion is one of the four best albums I have ever heard of this genre, the others being Hastings 1066 by Thy Majestie, Crystal Empire by Freedom Call and A Time Never Comes by Secret Spere. You may not have heard of any of these groups but trust me they are good.
Back to the cd at hand. This album is an invitation to loose oneself in the music, each song is a highlight, a new world that comes upon the listener. When the song "By the strange path of destiny" is opened by the unbelievably beautiful voice of Elisa Martin, you melt away. The Gates of Oblivion is almost 56 minutes of top shelf melodic power metal. Highly Reccomnded!

The consensus among reviewers was that this album was a step back for Dark Moor.

The consensus, as always, was wrong. The hack reviewers were caught up in the goth-inspired female-vocalist fad that went through the metal world a few years ago, as well as being afflicted with a condition common to metal reviewers throughout the years: an inability to understand singing (most metalheads are guitarists). Some of them actually thought the awful she-wailer that held Dark Moor back on their early albums could sing, and were going to attack this album regardless of how good it was, to show how enlightened and politically correct they are, I guess.

In any event, the classical compositions are not quite as strong on this album as they were on the early Dark Moor material; that much, at least, the hacks got right. But the guitars are much better, they are much more heavy in tone, and the vocals are a vast improvement merely by being average. So, overall, this one is about equal in quality to the early Dark Moor. Just different. Faster, more power-metal genre-standard, but more consistent and less annoying. Not a masterpiece but very good. Recommended to fans of the genre.

These guys dont make bad musuic. I give this album 4 and a half stars. Its almost perfect but there are 2 songs that dont fit on the album. Once again though i only found 2 songs that have women vocals. I dont know what happened but there older stuff was all about wild vocals which you see in this album also. They also use a lot of violins and keyboard mastery at its best. Dark moor the more i here them they are really maturing a lot as a band that will keep on making great albums. Listen to the solos also some of them are super crazy like the wild that i was talking about. This band somewhat reminds me that in a band you dont always have to play the same jhandra its good to explore out of the box a little such as they do in a few of there songs. I would check this one out if your a hardcore fan of dark moor you have to own this album....
