NOT CARPENTER'S ORIGINAL SCORE...IT'S A HACK JOB..........2005-12-04
What a piece of ****. Do not buy this worthless CD. If you are a fan of John Carpenter's scores, you will not like this. Don't waste your money like I did...And the only reason it got one star is because you can't give it any less!
not for fans of carpenter's scores.......2004-12-03
like other reviewers said, this is someone else playing those classic carpenter tunes. sometimes it sounds like elevator music. unfortunately, the cover doesn't say anything about this piece of work...
Essential what?.......2003-07-08
As the previous reviewer noted, nowhere on this CD does it indicate that the 'Essential John Carpenter' is someone re-recording all of the famous cues. Naturally all the info is on the inside.
And the disc? I don't see the point in bothering. They might as well make Assault on Precinct 13, Dark Star, and They Live (which pretty much don't have scores in print anymore) available again, even if they have to combine a couple to make one disc.
Carpenter does not use orchestras or elaborate bands for his scores. He does most of it himself and that makes another Carpenter collection simple. It's not difficult to play the notes, but everything is just slightly off and after a while you wonder what's the point.
This is NOT the music from the Carpenter films you love. This is someone playing that music. Assault on Precinct 13, which provides most of the attraction of this pretty worthless disc, sounds lousy and has none of the life of the throbbing synth of the original. Not only that, but they have the nerve to throw in two (2) cues from Starman, a Carpenter film that he didn't do his own music for(!) Instead the disc is broken by the Jerry Goldsmith pieces that sound NOTHING like anything Carpenter has done. It's bad--it belongs elsewhere, namely the Starman soundtrack which is still in print.
Stay away from this thing. It's a ripoff, another attempt to cash in on a name without providing any real product.
AVOID THIS IMITATION GARBAGE!!!!! FAKE CARPENTER.......2003-06-25
These jerks did a great job hiding the fact that these tracks are re-recorded by some schlep. Avoid this lame piece of garbage at all costs. The tones are totally wrong, it sounds very little like the genius originals. I bought this to get some of the Assault on Precinct 13 stuff, and was horrified to find that everything had been re-recorded. THIS IS NOT MENTIONED ON THE OUTER PACKAGING IN ANY WAY!!! You would never know until you open it and read the liners. Shame on these bastards for trying to dupe and rip people off. AVOID THIS [STUFF]!!!
"absolute in capturing the original scores".......2002-12-03
Hats off to Gareth Williams, James Fitzpatrick and Silva Screen Records for this venture into the world of John Carpenter. Silva has done a masterful job of recreating the feel of the original Carpenter film scores. This awesome compilation of "great thriller music" sends chills up our spines from composers Ennio Morricone, Jack Nitzsche, Dave Davies, Alan Howarth and of course John Carpenter. Each selection is arranged and performed with plenty of suspense dating back to 1974, which gave the audience a supernatural and imaginative fright. Each score paints the mood for every cue, which writer, producer and director Carpenter required...and then some.
Each score takes on a life of its own away from the film. If you've never seen any of the films, your imagination plays a key role interpreting what our legendary director/composer has up his sleeve when writing and directing the music. Entire album is a stand out ~ this one's for Carpenter and Silva fans alike, a collection for the first time with tremendours power and immediacy of each cue can now be heard. With Dolby Digital Surround Sound Recordings...this is a must have for your collection. All "film-score-buffs" beware, this is guranteed to give your goosebumps on the very first track, gotta love it!

unification part 2 is really what the title should be. more amazing power metal.......2007-05-10
hello metallians. iron savior are one of the truest power metal bands around and they write some of the hardest hitting catchy anthems the world of metal has ever seen. this album is alot like unification. i am obsessive over unification as i think it is one of the 10 best albums ever made, but this album is in many ways just as amazing. the metal god kai hansen does his best song ever on this cd. solar wings is to me what power metal is all about . that song has to be the best song kai has ever done. the riffs are jaw dropping and the choruses will bring the metallian out of anybody who even remotely cares in any way about metal. piet sielk is also an amazing writer and guitarist,as well as a great vocalist. piet is the head man here, he is the lead singer and writer. piet has an amazing sense of mellody and knows just the right amount of power and mellody a song needs to become a master work. kai hansen is not in the amazing album battering ram or condition red but that does not hurt this band at all. however with kai piet wrote some of his best songs period. kai is a guitar wizard, he has a style all his own and it is the best guitar sound i have ever heard. this cd is a buffet of anthems. the amazing made of metal and predators and ive been to hell, thats not all. i mean every song is awesome. you should buy this album for the song solar wings alone.solar wings is one of the best power metal songs ever made, that i garuntee. also you can not own this album without owning unification. this is power metal at its finest. your friend in metal, brandon whitson,25 of north carolina
Excellent.......2006-09-20
This is a great album that any Metal fan (especially Power Metal) should own. This is the first Iron Savior album I have listened to, and I will definitely be getting more in the future. "Never Say Die", "Dragons Rising", and "Made of Metal" are especially noteworthy tracks. Iron Savior, I salute you \nn/ >_

Same old, Same old...........2002-05-23
This is the 4th Iron Savior album that I have and it will be that last. Iron Savior started out with a couple of strong albums but then the cracks started to appear.
Dark Assault is just like each of their preceeding discs. The band has not progressed at all. The music is well done technically, but cold and uninviting.
The greatest flaw; however, is the drum-work (Thomen Stauch). The same beat over and over and over--this wouldn't be so bad except that it crosses over into their earlier albums making each album sound largely identical. It's so bad that after a couple of listens, it's difficult to not believe that Iron Savior is using a drum-machine
Extremely poor drum-work seems to be a staple of many recent power metal bands, and Iron Savior, sadly, is no exception. Maybe they should hire Sir K Luttinen (The Black League) for an example of how to make the skins sound like an additional instrument instead of just the mindless banging put out by Stauch.
I liked Iron Savior, but this...........2002-02-06
Iron Savior started with a great concept, building a story through their music across 3 CDs... but now the story is now long dead. I hoped that they would have started with a new one for this CD, but they're just dragging it on and on and on... This CD has some pretty amazing gutar work, but its just not enough to save the CD from its almost annoying lyrics and killed off concept.
If Iron Savior rises again with a new story, I will be the first in line to buy it, but this CD, you can do without.
GOOD BUT UNIFICATION WAS BETTER.......2001-08-10
Unification was a landmark album, hard to beat for anyone, even the creators themselves. Dark Assault has some great #'s like 'Seek and Destroy' and 'Solar Winds', the chorus section on 'Made of Metal' will make you want to pull over - guaranteed. However the opening track 'Never Say Die' does not measure upto 'Coming Home' in Unification. Opening tracks define the album so right there it fades somewhat but picks up on the next 2 tracks and trk 7. The tempo is not maintained as tightly as Unification. Iron Savior does the best covers having done Priest's 'Desert Plains' superbly and Sab's 'Neon Knight' - just awesome, the last song is a Priest cover 'Delivering the Goods'. Great stuff but could have been done better since the talent is in place.
