5 out of 5 stars best album ever.......2007-07-01

You suck if you don't own this cd in your collection. If you're religious or not, Pick..It..Up! The chaotic madness on this cd just never gets old for me. I really don't need to write an extended review because you should already be listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Getaway.......2007-05-28

I've had this album for a while, ever since it came out, oh what five years ago? Just never on disc format. This album still has alot of push in it. I just bought it for the first time, in compact disc form, the other night and I still love it to death.

Norma Jean sets the benchmark for all those who have tried to follow in their footsteps. This album alone proves why they are the best, the superior definition to this genre, and what better album to show off as being the best of the bunch then Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child. Buy it now. Even all you pop punkers out there reading this.

5 out of 5 stars Very satisfied.......2007-03-08

Why are you still reading this!!
I was lucky enough to find these guys one day and this album ripped my face off and then tried putting it back on so it could rip it off again. I love everything on this CD and I pitty someone who loves hardcore or metal who hasn't heard this.. your standards will go a bit higher and suddenly things you thought were the pinnacle suddenly will not seem as good.

In all seriousness they have a created a great album that anyone metal head/ hardcore fan should own. I've been a fan ever since this came out and have not regretted anything they've put out. Please give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IN ANY LANGUAGE.......2006-12-26

I bought this CD for the song "Love Is Spoken Here" which was sung at my father's funeral, to celebrate his life and love of music, especially Church music. Our soloist was a friend whose voice warmed our breaking hearts. But when I saw that I could also get the Mormon Tabernacle Choir version along with many other beautiful American songs, I ordered this. I highly recommend MTC if you are seeking choir music to lift your spirit.

5 out of 5 stars It's Jill...need I say more?.......2007-01-31

Jill Scott, consistent from start to finish, never fails to satisfy. It's no secret that Jill writes and delivers a song with equal intensity, however, we had no clue how well she could collaborate with industry greats, not only holding her own, but often outshining music's seasoned veterans. Who is Jill Scott? If the answer to that question has not been clearly answered by The Experience and Beautifully Human, one listen to Collaborations will clarify Jill Scott as the last of the real deal entertainers, no gimmicks, no distracting stage shows or music videos, fully clothed, confident and intelligent, her talent alone speaks for itself. She is the role model that our little girls should see. I guess she proves that there is no need for bling bling, when you can sing sing. And if it wasn't enough to get Ms. Scott doing her thing with the likes of the Isley Brothers, Al Jarreau, Mos Def and Common, this Limited Edition, 2 CD Set, contains bonus material boasting a live performance from the Roots, the original demo recording of You Got Me and sample songs showcasing Hidden Beach Record talent. With so many artist putting out mediocre 1-hit discs, you simply can't go wrong with this one. BUY THIS CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars A real gem for all trombone and brass enthusiasts.......2007-05-18

This is another superb performance by Alessi, Hartman, Lawrence and Bollinger. These players are extremely gifted musicians. The musicality and technical prowess of these players is first rate. They play beautifully as an ensemble and the entire disc is very enjoyable. This should be required listening for all aspiring trombonists and brass enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Trombone CD from the 4 of a Kind Guys.......2004-01-06

I purchased the first 4 of a Kind CD shortly after it came out in 92. At the time there weren't many "Classical" Trombone CDs (well ok I admit it, I bought it on Cassette Tape), and the release of this item was a real find for me. I loved the tape. It was just great to hear what a trombone could sound like in the hands of a master.

As an amateur trombonist of more than 30 years, it has been very tough to develop as a player as there aren't many audio resources available to help you with things like sound and approach. At the time of the casette's release, the cassette was a real find, and I was happy to add it to my collection of trombone playing resources.

Well, it is almost 11 years later, and I am very happy to add this second great CD to my collection now. As a student and a listener, there is so much "to get out" of this CD. From a technical standpoint, the balance of playing, overall musicality of every recorded number, and the many styles presented is a wonderful resource to help you learn to play this great instrument. Of especially significant note is the absolutely beautiful sounds that can be heard, the balance between each and every part, and the perfect tuning of this ensemble (at least to this listener's ears). Things just ring in the high range, and "rattle and roll" down low. Listen for some just great Blair Bollinger Bass Trombone on this CD throughout. The playing and blend is gourgeous, and it is easy to see why these very fine players are so admired.

From a pure listener's standpoint, this album is fun listening and a musical joy to the ear. From the first track to last, this CD is full of musical gems, plenty of good musical ideas, and imaginative and very inspired music making. What becomes clear quickly as you listen is just how obviously much these guys like playing together, and the fun they are having. It comes out over and over again in every number.

There isn't a single clinker on this CD, or anyting that is disappointing or below standard in any way. The "Barber of Seville" is espcially good fun; I could see Elmer and Bugs in my mind as I listened to it (as an aside, if you haven't seen that famous Warner Brothers Cartoon featuring The Barber of Seville excerpts, try to find it, ooh, wait till I get that Wabbit!). On the other hand, I must also profess a real love for baseball, and the tune "Take me Out to The Ball Game". I just loved the arrangement, and the ensemble playing. It was just great. Including the "Crack of the Bat" and fan noise close to the end of the track just tops things off.

I really think these wonderful musicians have produced a truly great CD that obviously was put together with the listener in mind. From a techncial recording standpoint, you don't need to adjust the volume any time while listening to the CD, and the quality of the recording and editing of every tune is just great. Consequently, this CD simply flows by from beginning to end. You will want to play it again and again.

Personally, I very much recommend this CD to Student, Teacher, and music afficinado alike. This is a great CD that will make just a super addition to your musical library, regardless of the reason why you may have bought it!

Guitarist Kenny Burrell's only recording for producer Creed Taylor's CTI label, God Bless the Child is in some ways a typical CTI affair. The hallmarks of the label's sound--slick production and lush orchestration--are on full display, which means that much of the appeal of this album will be a matter of taste. Listeners who prefer Charlie Parker's albums with strings, for example, will love it, while those who thrill more to Bird's small-group efforts will probably be turned off. But even those in the latter group will have to admit that the magic on some of these tracks is undeniable--despite arranger Don Sebesky's sometimes superfluous string orchestrations, Burrell's guitar playing here is simply gorgeous. On "A Child Is Born" and a thrilling version of the title track, Burrell is in luminous form, building from beautiful chordal soloing to soulful single-note lines in a manner entirely his own. With an all-star band (including bassist Ron Carter and drummer Billy Cobham) providing an intensely swinging backdrop, Burrell shines even when the arrangements threaten to drown him out. The added bonus tracks on the CD reissue--an alternate take of "A Child Is Born" without the string orchestrations and two solo guitar performances--will further delight listeners who crave more of Burrell's guitar. --Ezra Gale

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Late night music.......2007-03-02

This disc from the Detroit native and master jazz guitarist, Kenny Burrel, was originally recorded in 1971. The disc features an all-star cast of musicians, technicians and producer;it is a classic. Check out the personnel accompanying Burrel, you have, Freddie Hubbard on Trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, Hubert Laws on flute and two of the best percussionists, Airto Moreira and Ray Barreto, plus a string section arranged by Don Sebesky, enginnered by the great Rudy Van Gelder and topped off by a Cecil Taylor production! Talk about jazz all-stars! As for the music, well it is timeless, perfect for a reflective late night, a bit on the mellow side but nonetheless a fascinating collection of a who's who of vintage jazz that sounds as good today as some 35+years ago. The first two tracks are almost like a warm up session for the talents of Kenny Burrel has he unveils his talents, pushing the Charlie Christian style into then, new territory. His mellow guitar licks are tasteful and classy. It is not until "Do What You Gotta Do" that the accompanying musicians open up for extended solos, most notably and eloquently by Freddie Hubard, who blows a mean solo. The highlight of this disc is the title track, "God Bless The Child" that features quiet souful renderings on guitar accented by string accompanyment. Strings are not always a jazz aficionados favorite addition to a jazz ensemble but it adds a touch of class and in this case it further advances the mellow nature of the song. The strings also play counterpoint to the bluesy jazz guitar of Burrel. The strings play endlessly while Burrel dispatches his signature sound and they excahnge dominance over the song ultimately relinquishing the lead to the man himself, Kenny Burrel. If there is one complaint about this disc, it would be that there are not enough solos and give and take between the musicians; it seems clearly that this was Kenny Burrels disc and not a group of his but rather top notch studio personnel brought in for the recording. All in all, this is a good change of pace disc for those quite nights, late at night, when you want music to be unobtrusive.

5 out of 5 stars Extravagant Jazz Collection.......2006-08-31

Kenny Burrell is one of the most prolific jazz guitarists to span about 6 decades. This recording produced by Creed Taylor, one of jazz's major successful commerical producers, in 1971 is Kenny's most elaborate work to date.

Classic jazz songs (each over 8 minutes long!) include "A Child Is Born" and "God Bless The Child" plus a Broadway tune "Lost In The Stars". In addition to these standards, there are original songs written by Kenny Burrell. On top of that, add a who's who of musical talents who join Kenny in this musical palette. These jazz legends include Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Ray Barretto, and Freddie Hubbard to name a few. What an entourage!

The original lp released in 1971 had only 5 songs. A cd released in the late nineties included 7 songs. But this cd has an extra bonus cut, another version of "A Child Is Born" which is over 7 minutes long, remastered from the original tapes and includes 8 songs for your listening pleasure.

Some will say that this is not Kenny Burrell's "true sound" due to lush orchestrations and the addition of other very fine jazz legend talents. But a truly gifted artist is always improvising, always growing, and always discovering. In this collection, Kenny Burrell shows us a side of himself rarely seen. Always in the foreground of the accompanying musicians, this music is as much about Kenny Burrell as any other in his recording career. We are the lucky ones to have the opportunity to enjoy the experience.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-06-24

I discovered this record in 1974 as I was just beginning to develop an understanding of and a love for jazz. All of the material on it is interesting and tastefully done, and, since it is a Creed Taylor production, it's as likely as not to have performances embellished with string arrangements. In general I'm not a huge fan of jazz with strings, but I have to make an exception in this case, and that is because of A Child Is Born / God Bless The Child. Although on both the CD and on the original LP, A Child Is Born / God Bless The Child is shown as two separate pieces, in fact it is a single continuous piece with a short section of semi-schmaltzy solo strings bridging the two together. When I first heard it, I liked the guitar parts, and I didn't quite get the string parts. But I quickly became very engrossed in it - so much so that I have not tired of listening to it in the thirty years since I first listened to it. The entire piece has a logic to it and it builds in a smouldering sort of emotional intensity from beginning to end with the middle section being like a breathing space. If there was nothing else on this CD it would still be worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Slow and Sweet.......2005-03-31

Don't expect any fast music here - the sort that you would expect from other virtuosos like Benson (the early one). Nevertheless, this is a very sweet album that any jazz guitar fanatic should buy.

And even though it's just a "bonus track", I love the "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men".

5 out of 5 stars Guitar master in top form..........2003-08-31

Lovely album, all the way through. One could argue that some moments seem over-produced, but it's a minor quibble. Burrell obviously knows how to pick and how to please, and if you like his other work, you can't miss this one. If you are looking for your first CD with Kenny on it, I might suggest the "Kenny Burrell With John Coltrane" release on Original Jazz Classics as just as good or better. This one has about 50 minutes of mellow, but not boring, music. Focused listening with ear phones is a good way to start here, then throw it on the changer and go on with your normal life.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Voice From The Past.......2006-07-27

This two-disc set gives a good overview of the great Russian Bass singer. It has a total of 36 selections, and covers the years 1911 to 1936.

With a voice of tremendous range and power, Chaliapin could also sing softly and with feeling. A very flexible instrument that comes through the old recording technology of the 78 record era. A good example of the pure physical gifts of his voice is 'Farlaf's Rondo' by Glinka. A 'patter' song, with words and syllables sung rapidly and seemingly without taking a breath. As if the performance wasn't difficult enough, Chaliapin speeds up the tempo at the ending of the rondo! It shows the breath control he had, and while the singer seems to be none of the worst for wear, I was left breathless just listening!

Two selections, Boris' Monologue from 'Boris Godounov' and 'Song of The Flea', by Mussorgsky, are represented by two different performances. This gives a good idea of the breadth of Chaliapin's art, as each performance of the same work is full of nuance and artistry. It is hard for me to pick which performance I like best. As with any great artist, each time a work is performed it is not just a repitition, but a unique recreation.

The transfers naturally have much surface noise, as all are from the 78 rpm record era. I have most of these recordings on transfers to LP's and the noise is much more apparant than on the CD transfers. With older recordings such as these, any transfers and 'cleaning up' of the sound can only go so far. If too much of the noise from the originals is 'cleaned up', the recording can lose presence. Whomever engineered the transfers to CD has hit a happy middle ground. The background noise is still there, but not so annoying as on LP, while the sound of the actual music and Chaliapin's voice seems much more alive.

What I have read about Chaliapin says that he was not only a great singer, but a great actor also. The two do not always go together, for a great voice in opera can make up for a lack of acting ability. To have both talents rolled into one is rare. Contemporary accounts of Chaliapin's operatic performances comment as much on his acting as his singing. There arevideos of his film performance in Ibert's Don Quichotte, which I want to see when I have the chance.

If you're passion is the human voice, you must hear Chaliapin. It is not possible to say he or anyone else was the best. But these recordings show he was a consummate artist, and are well worth exploring.

Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Chaliapin - Prima Voce.......2006-03-18

The recordings are old but the only way one can hear a legend!

The selections are excellent and the quality is as one would expect from this vintage recording.

I enjoy going back to hear these voices and this is the only way to understand the history

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2005-11-02

Michael Allen Harrison's "A Tribute to Gershwin and Friends" is by no means a new album, but it's new to me, and what a killer! I had the opportunity to meet Harrison in Portland, OR last year and to see him play live. He's one of a handful of pianists so extraordinarily gifted that he seems to be the most at home with the piano at his fingertips, making the most difficult passages look like child's play. That doesn't mean that this album is showy or full of bravado. The clarity of Harrison's playing and the depth of emotion conveyed is head and shoulders above the majority of pianists out there (Michael Dulin and Philip Aaberg come to mind as players with this kind of pianism. Awesome, all three!!!) "Gershwin and Friends" is made up of thirteen compositions that harken back to a more innocent era when music was more relaxed and less competitive. Six of the songs were composed by George Gershwin, two are original Harrison pieces, and the others are standards that were composed at about the same time as the Gershwin pieces. Most are piano solos, but a few of the tracks include bass and/or guitar. For the most part, this is a quiet, soulful recording, but there are some upbeat and lively moments as well.

All of the tracks on this album are wonderful, but I have some favorites. The CD opens with a sultry "Our Love Is Here to Stay." With just piano and acoustic bass, this is the perfect slow dance. "God Bless the Child" is dark and slinky in an easy, sensual style. Bass, electric guitar and very light percussion enhance the mood. Yum! "Autumn Leaves" has been one of my favorite songs since I was a kid, and Harrison's arrangement does not disappoint. Flowing and elegant, the heartbreaking melody touches deep within. And then there's "Summertime," my all-time favorite Gershwin piece. Dark and bluesy for a couple of verses, the last minute or so is more uptempo and improvised - an incredible arrangement! "Swanee" begins in a ballad style that is dark and slow and develops into the melody most of us are familiar with in a whimsical, nostalgic style; it ends with a phrase from Stephen Foster's "Old Folks At Home" - a cute touch! "My Funny Valentine," another favorite standard of mine, closes the album with an enchanting love song full of easy grace and tenderness.

What a great album! Michael Allen Harrison has inspired me to pull out some of my Gershwin piano books and dust them off, but I can only dream of playing this music like him! Very highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great playing by Kenny Burrell -- as usual!.......2003-12-02

I'm a big Kenny Burrell fan. He's the most soulful straight ahead jazz guitarist around, no question about it.

I too own this effort in vinyl and CD. While it may not be the very best recorded jazz guitar ever, it IS very, very good and if you're a fan of Kenny Burrell, consider this an essential recording.

His signature tone and effortless, bluesy, funky, tasteful chording and phrasing is just perfect. It's all good.

The backup musicians are jazz giants in their own right, including Ron Carter, Freddy Hubbard, Billy Cobham, Hubert Laws and Airto Moreira, plus a string section. Forgive me, those I didn't mention!

Five stars plus!

5 out of 5 stars THE Standard for Jazz Guitar.......2002-02-05

Total command of the instrument, consummate taste, and phrasing far surpassing that of any other guitarist before or since...
The vinyl LP's side two consisted of "A Child Is Born" and "God Bless The Child", treatments comprising what remains to this day quite simply the greatest album side of jazz guitar ever recorded .

5 out of 5 stars Burrell at his very best.......2001-07-12

I bought this album as a"vinyl" in 1971 when it was first realeased, after 10 years or so it was more or less worn out, but somewhere around 1992 I luckily found it on CD. The music rewards repeated listening.BUT....you will be caught the very first time you hear it. This is the only album that Burrell did for the CTI label, s far as I know...The usage of small string group of violins and cello gives an impressionistic touch, and gives the music a kind of a beauty that almost hurts when listening to it. Burrels playing is absolutely outstanding it consists of his mix of sophisticated blues lines combined with very pretty harmonic playing, where each chord is carefully outlined, and he plays with such a confidence that it is overwhelming. Freddie Hubbard plays a beautiful solo on "Do what you gotta do" which also is one of the best tracks, but also the two classic ballads, "God Bless the Child" and "A Child is Born" are oustanding.. in my mind those two ballads might represent the best playing by Burrell ever. Buy this one if you are a Burrell fan, or just love beautiful swinging sweet and bluesy music.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2001-01-16

I happened upon this CD in a music store, and because it was on sale I decided to buy it. I wasn't quite sure who Billie Holiday was, I just remembered my mom talking about listening to her when she was young. Needless to say I didn't expect to relate to the music at all. To my surprise I absolutely loved the CD. The songs are timeless and Billie's voice is amazing, unlike any other I've ever heard. Now I listen to her music whenever I get a chance. I would recommend this CD to anyone, young or old. It's definitely a classic.

5 out of 5 stars A good way to get most of the bonus tracks.......2004-12-03

I got this album basically because it was probably the easiest/cheapest way to get most of the bonus tracks offered on the exorbitant Japanese import albums. Since there are eight songs in all, it IS almost like buying a complete disc by itself, which was another big selling point to me. I've only just begun collecting Nightwish CD's and like their other material that I'm familiar with so far, it does not disappoint at all. In particular, the songs "A Return to the Sea", "Sleepwalker", and "Nightquest" should not be missed. The only bonus song they neglected to include is "Sleeping Sun" which isn't too hard to come by on other albums. If you're a big fan and want the bonus material, I would definitely recommend this CD as an excellent means to do so.
