This recording was reccomended somewhere as being even better than the newer version with Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming - it really is tops, I think. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is as lyrical as ever. And the other soloists are also breathtaking.

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.

Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24

Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

We were looking for a good source to introduce our children (4 and 6) to various classical composers and melodies. We had tried one of the Baby Einstein tapes, but all the music was done on synthesizers. This compilation is done with real orchestras.
It has been a great tool in getting the kids familiar with all different types of composers - from Baroque and Classical, to Romantics and someone modern composers.

    This is a ten CD box set with a huge number of great classical piano pieces. Most are played by Jeno Jando, who gets high marks from the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs and DVDs (highly recommended in its own right for the novice and experienced classical music CD buyer) for his playing on budget labels. You will recognize many of the pieces and they will serve as a jumping off point for additional exploration of classical piano. At roughly $2 each, you can't lose!

    The Laserlight label also offers a similar box set of orchestral selections "Meditation - Classical Relaxation". At the time of this writing, that boxed set enjoys a much higher sales ranking than this one. This boxed set deserves to be discovered too. Don't let the low price fool you, these are excellent recordings.

      Unlike the first volume of historic performances by Benno Moiseiwitsch released by Naxos, which was devoted to major works, the second volume is filled almost entirely with encore pieces, most of which are now rarely heard. The one exception--and it is itself an infrequent visitor to concert halls--is Liszt's gigantic transcription of Wagner's "Tannhauser Overture." In this 1938 recording, one of the pianist's greatest, Moiseiwitsch achieves what even so great a modern master as Jorge Bolet (BMG) failed to do--realize Liszt's seemingly impossible aim of reproducing the sonority and might of the orchestral score on the piano.

      The short pieces are just as superb. The 1939 performance of Weber's "Invitation to the Dance" (in Taussig's dazzling arrangement) is matched in elegance and tonal beauty only by the recordings of his fellow Leschetizky students, Ignaz Friedman (Danacord), and Artur Schnabel (APR), both of whom perform Weber's original text. Moiseiwitsch's version of Liszt's Concert Étude in F Minor ("La leggierezza") deserves its legendary reputation. This transcendent reading, with the limpid delicacy and beauty of its leggierissimo playing, brings the work's title to startling life. Moiseiwitsch's dazzling virtuosity was disciplined by calm but intense musicality. He was able to make much-abused pieces such as Liszt's Liebestraum No. 3 and his Second Hungarian Rhapsody sound fresh: whether through the liquid poetry of his playing in the former or his rhythmic élan and devil-may-care good humor in the latter. Any of these performances would make this disc worth buying at full price; Naxos's super-budget price makes it irresistible. --Stephen Wigler

      This issue is spectacular. Sound quality, for me is of little consideration when buying a cd. One has to learn to glimpse beneath the veneer of hiss and cracking, and hear the soul and artistry of the player.
      This cd, has been beautifully transferred, and reveals the genius of Benno Moiseiwitsch. His artistry is beyond description, it transcends the categories we are used to hearing. Technically, and emotionally, this is a unique record, of a particular tradition or school of pianists. I have never heard piano playing like this, and don't expect to. I shall say no more...

        It seems obvious that Bach's sacred music and organ works were written for church services, yet we listen to them almost exclusively as disembodied concert pieces. Luckily, Paul McCreesh makes a specialty of remedying this; here, for the first time on any commercial recording, he's placed Bach's music into the order of service (in this case, for the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day) from Bach's own church in Leipzig. For that reason alone, this is an important release; as usual with these performers, it's thrilling music-making as well. McCreesh uses very small forces in the vocal works--usually one singer per part and never more than two--yet the performance never feels underpowered. Quite the contrary: the opening chorus of cantata no. 180, for example, gets a good-humored, jaunty swing; the Kyrie of the Missa builds from gentle grace into magnificence, while the Gloria sounds deliriously joyful (with ferocious horn playing). What's more, listeners familiar with these works may hear a lot of instrumental detail that's usually obscured by a larger choir. The singers acquit themselves well in the "choruses"; while countertenor Angus Davidson doesn't sound quite up to the breathless "Quoniam" in the Missa, the other soloists are very good indeed, particularly the nimble tenor Charles Daniels. It's a pleasure to hear Bach's organ music brought together with his cantatas, and the two organists even improvise (as Bach did) brief flourishes between each line of the hymns. Which brings us to the performance's one flaw: the congregational hymn-singing, so exciting on this group's Praetorius recording, can get a bit tedious here. Don't let that put you off, though (CD players have "skip" buttons, after all)--even by McCreesh's formidable standards, this is one fabulous record. --Matthew Westphal

        I read the review of this 2 CD work in the New York Times, and thought my husband might appreciate it. He thought he died and went to heaven when he heard it. Even though the litergy of the mass is in German, he faithfully followed the chanting on the CD with the German words in the pamphlet provided (my husband does not speak German). Except for the Bible readings in German, all the music is in Latin as in Bach's time. Even I, with no Catholic tradition, truly appreciate listening to the lovely hymns; and I do not find the German Bible readings disconcerting because they are done in chanting with hymns interspersed. A true masterpiece!

        Paul McCreesh is a master of reconstruction: he takes discrete, sometimes well-familiar, pieces and places them in the context of church liturgy. This endeavor requires formidable research, both into the performing practices of the period from which the music came, and into the devotional practices that coexisted with the music. McCreesh' reconstructions of Venetian services, masses by Praetorius and Morales, and now this Epiphany mass have been praised by critics of all hues, including those who are generally suspicious of the period performance scholarship. This uniform acceptance speaks volumes for the merits of McCreesh' approach to musical reconstructions. As a backbone for the Epiphany service on these two discs, McCreesh uses the vocal music from Missa Brevis in F major and cantatas "Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen" and "Schmucke dich, o liebe Seele," as well as the organ music from Toccata in B flat minor and preludes from several cantatas. These pieces are interpolated with congregational singing of hymns, recitations of prayers, and even a sermon chanted in German at the end of the first disc! If you don't want to feel like you're attending a church service every time you pick up this set, you can skip the devotional interpolations. You will still get more than enough for your money. Both discs are filled to the brink: CD1 is 80 min., CD2 is 79:59 min.! This release features a celebrated organist James O'Donnell and a number of world-class singers such as Charles Daniels, Ann Monoyos and Peter Harvey. As the editorial review mentions, the choral forces are very lean and elegant. The music really breathes under their light touch. Especially thrilling are the two sections sung one-voice-per-part: Sanctus in D major from BWV 238 and the opening chorus from BWV 180. gkolomietz@yahoo.com

        Recorded 1987 at the famous Italian Institute in Budapest, this CD certainly has the advantage of good sound: Balàzs Szokolay's concert piano is very realistic, and occasionally I thought I could even hear him breathing! As for the skill of the pianist: unless you happen to live in a great metropolis, you are unlikely to be able to hear piano playing like this live. Szokolay is especially good on the fast pieces: Weber's "Invitation to the Dance", Mendelssohn's "Hunting Song", Chopin's "Fantasie-Impromptu" all sound tremendous, and the close of the CD (Gershwin's 1938 preludes, Bartók's "Romanian Folkdances") show Szokolay at his best. The slower pieces are also well-played, but here I detected a lack of real emotion: Tchaikovsky's "Barcarolle", for example, can be really moving when played by someone like Mikhail Pletnev, but here it is just a pleasant piece of entertainment. The same could be said of some of the other slower pieces, including Liszt's "Liebestraum [Dream of Love] Nr. 3".

        Piano music from 1780 (Mozart) to 1938 (Gershwin), 15 pieces by 14 composers, and apparently no uniting theme: the original title of this CD had nothing to do with "romantic", and I suppose the CD is really meant just to show what the piano (and the pianist) can achieve, but I found the programme very uneven.
