A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

SEATTLE GOD BAND.......2006-05-27

My friends, takke time to read this review, because you wont regret it. WILLARD is the Lost GOD BAND of SEATTLE , who got lost in the alternative shuffle. Unfortunately they put out only one album :STEEL MILL: Produced by SIR JACK ENDINO.
This album WILL MELT YOUR EARS, KNOCK YOUR SOCKZ OFF, GRAB YOU BY YOUR THROAT and throw you around the room.
ONE HEAVY FAT ASS SLAB BASS, HEAVY CRUNCHING GUITARS, POUNDING YOUR BRAIN ,THROBBING DRUMS..AND you have a GEM of an album
Rumor has it that these guys worked in a Steel mill in Seattle , and hence the name.But what a ALBUM TO Put out, and Take down your frustations of working in a STEEL MILL. Belive me , I work In a Process Industry all my life, and I know these Guys Frustations. I was lucky to find this Album in a Used Store in Seattle, And I spin it Daily.
Similarity to BOISE,ID Band Tad cannot be ruled out, Though this album Does not Slow down the Pace.
ONE HEAVY MOTHER OF AN ALBUM......GET IT OR LIVE TO REGRET...

Willard is one of the hardest acts to come out of 90's Seattle, they had a distaste for major labels so they remained pretty much undiscovered...They sound similiar to Tad, focussing more on metal then on Stooges riffs. Willard was a good band but they might take some time to warm up to if you aren't a big fan of metal....BANNED BY THE SPD!

I think Willard is just another grunge band without any kind of idea of what music is.Go to look for other bands from Seattle and Washington State,inside "grunge minor choices" you can find better stuff choosing Gravel,My Name,Skin Yard(even if Steel Mill is produced by Jack Endino),Blood Circus,Seaweed.

Boredom?Maybe.......2005-08-06

This album is not bad,but it's very boring.Except for "High Moon" and "Sweet Kali".The first seems a song made by Tool,the guitars has same effects of Adam Jones guitar on Aenima.If you're not afraid of boredom,you can buy it.

Nirvana's Second Bleach Album HARDCORE GRUNGE.......2004-08-23

This album kicks so much a** .. i cant believe it never got any recognition. MOST UNDERRATED ALBUM OF THE NINETIES this is like Nirvana's Bleach meets Heavy Metal. You are not a TRUE Nirvana fan unless you love this cd (once you hear it) .. if i was gunna be mean i would say unless you have this cd. It's a gift from god this cd and IF YOU ARE READING THIS DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO BUY IT. i see people are selling it used here.. but ill be selling it on ebay too new. i will probably be under the name of lazyedogg or .. djs46. this cd is from the grunge era from the grunge state and their job.. hence the title, was the grungiest. they worked in a fricken steel mill. this is true grunge, metal blues .. i dunno nevermind dont yell at me if you think im wrong i forgot the meaning of grunge that i made up.. but it is A HEAVY METAL MASTERPIECE IT IS A GRUNGE MASTERPIECE IT IS A HARD ROCK MASTERPIECE. I DUNNO TRUELLY WHAT IT IS BUT ITS D*** GREAT AND DESERVES TO BE LISTENED TO. THESE ARTISTS SHOULD BE MILLIONAIRS LIKE THE (...) COURTNEY LOVE IS. AND IMMA GO OUT ON A LIMB HERE BUT THIS CD IS EITHER JUST AS GOOD AS BLEACHED OR BETTER. IF IT WERE UP TO ME ID CALL THIS PANTERA OR METALLICA MEETS NIRVANA. I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT METALLICAS EARLY MUSIC OR PANTERA BUT I THINK THEY HAD THAT SOUND SORTA ALONG WITH NIRVANA. THESE ARE TWELVE TRACKS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. A COOL THING YOU WILL NOTICE IS THAT THERE ARE MAJOR MAJOR SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE SONG SWEET KALI (TRACK THREE) AND EITHER THE WHITE STRIPES SOUND ALL TOGETHER OR ON ONE OF THEIR POPULAR SONGS OR SOMETHING (DONT REMEMBER BECAUSE I HAVENT HEARD THEM FOR SO LONG). A horror film whose topicality is tied to the dot-com boom is asking for trouble, and sure enough William Malone's follow-on to House on Haunted Hill turned out to be something of a murky bust. But composer Nicholas Pike's smartly understated score certainly deserves a better hearing. Working from inspirations as diverse as brooding Russian classical motifs, the baroque, and 20th-century modernism, Pike serves up a subtle cocktail of creepiness. On the cues "Alistair Gets Cozy/Cozier," he playfully turns the horror-film clichés of creaking hinges, leaden footsteps, and squeaking doors into wry mini-concertos of dread. There are a few obligatory crashing crescendos, wailing choirs, and action cues in the composer's largely seamless melding of the orchestral and electronic, but overall it's a soundtrack that wisely relies more on spacious dynamics than on cheap jolts to paint its evocative soundscape of dread. --Jerry McCulley
