5 out of 5 stars A total classic from the Northern Hyper-Blast!.......2003-01-25

As far as technical death metal goes, Kataklysm is by far one of the best bands in the genre. This album is excrutiatingly brutal, with some of the most inhuman vocal performances you can ever hope to find. Although the album hammers you in the face with full-blown chaos, there is a vein of melody throughout, which truly holds this masterpiece together. Very intense stuff, and very well arranged. One of the best!

5 out of 5 stars Mystical, technical death metal at its finest.......1999-12-30

My first reaction upon hearing this disc was, "Wow! " You see, the few scattered sound clips I'd heard of Kataklysm just hadn't impressed me very much. But one day I saw this at a local music store so I thought, "What the hell? You don't see Kataklysm's first disc very often. Might as well pick it up." So I did and it made my day. Kataklysm ain't the most technical beast I've ever heard (this album is from 1994 you know) but the mystical and magical elements thrown in basically make this one of the best albums I own. Anyone who likes their death metal technical and thought-provoking should do themselves a favor and pick this up.

4 out of 5 stars Listen to our magick!.......1999-10-27

All I have to say is that "Elder God" is just heavy as all get out. One listen to just this song is a dose of death metal to hold me for the whole day! Yeah! Those nondescript 'incantations' in the high screamy voice make those with even a casual interest in light, love and goodness wither into a dry husk. I won't even bother myself with whatever streetwise\rap bull they are doing now - why punish oneself? Sylvain Houde is the mic-eating MAN!

5 out of 5 stars Come on metalheads........1999-09-13

Support death metal. Buy this CD. The guitar playing is even better then Metallica! Singing great. Hurry and buy it now.

5 out of 5 stars Kataklysm Sorcery is an extreme album. Insane ......Awesome.......1999-05-28

Sorcery is slightly the best Kataklysm album. This album is very technical and the only question you will have for it is WHAT THE F**K ARE THEY DOING,MORTAL'S CAN'T DO THIS!!!. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. KATAKLYSM fans and any fan of true metal should get there hands on this.

3 out of 5 stars extremely short even for Zorn.......2007-07-16

I have over 100 Zorn cd's and this one surprised me at it's short length. only about 36 minutes or so. The only reason i bring it up is that certain groups are great at pricing their cd's accordingly as EP's but to pay full price for half a cd filled with music....maybe it's just me. Tzadik as usual made a great package this time using Salvador Dali tarot cards (which i own a set!) as the front cover pic which is very fitting. Zorn describes the way the music was constructed and its meaning towards magik and sorcery but I have certainly felt more moved by some of his other pieces. He writes that the drum piece at times makes it sound like an octopus is playing but this release is very quiet and muted. Not really any aggressive playing just a "less is more" approach this time around. If you like some of his quiter works I would certainly try this one out.
I myself prefer his more daring and noisy compostions :)

4 out of 5 stars Two virtuoso solo performances and an ensemble piece........2007-07-06

"From Silence to Sorcery" presents three compositions by John Zorn from the last decade-- 2002's "Goetia" for solo violin, 2000's "Gris-Gris" for 13 tuned drums and kick drum and 1997's "Shibboleth" for string trio augmented by clavichord and percussion.

"Goetia" is the highlight here for me. In the time I've listened to Zorn's composition, his string works have really been something I've been attracted to, in particular when Jennifer Choi was featured on violin. "Goetia" is a solo piece for her and Zorn really puts her through the paces-- before I heard it, I have to confess I was expecting technical wizardry as Choi is one of the most phenomenal violinists I've ever heard, but Zorn instead chooses subtlety and technique, allowing Choi to be at the same time expressive and impressive, showing a staggering array of technique and at the same time being evocative. It proves to be a fine addition to Zorn's catalog.

Nearly as interesting is "Gris-Gris". It reminds me a bit of "Dark River" from "Redbird" in that it grabs your attention and has a similar pulse-like feel to that piece, but unlike "Dark River", this one is audible and assertive. Performed by William Winant who manages to capture a great circular feel, the pieec feels as though it could hold your attention for hours and that it ends too quickly after just under ten minutes.

"Shibboleth" features a set of Zorn regulars-- string trio fo Choi on violin, Lois Martin on viola and Fred Sherry on cello augmented by Steve Drury on the clavichord and William Winant on percussion. This piece, composed in 1997, seems to fit better with "Redbird" then with anything else in Zorn's catalog. The piece is one that emphasizes a delicate nature, it is quiet, almost disturbingly so, and in being so demands your attention. But ultimately unlike the other pair of pieces, I don't get much from it. It's a fine listen, but nothing that I find a desire to come back.

Nonetheless, with two great performances and one that's pretty good, "From Silence to Sorcery" is a great record. Recommended.

Telarc has come up with a real novelty--four Copland scores new to CD. All date from his populist period of accessible Americana tinged with modernism and all make for fascinating listening. From Sorcery to Science accompanied a puppet show plugging the history of drugs for the 1939 World's Fair. Its often witty score begins with a fanfare, segues to chinoiserie, and winds up with a flag-waving march. The City, written for a World's Fair film extolling social engineering, includes some of Copland's finest music in the simple vein, from bucolic rural portraiture to urban bustle complete with blaring auto horns. Copland's music for The Cummington Story, a government documentary about refugee resettlement, is austerely moving; he later used it in his Clarinet Concerto's slow movement. The North Star, a Hollywood World War II epic about Nazis devastating a Russian village, drew an effective score from Copland, huge chunks of which sound like leftovers from Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky. Topnotch sound and performances make this essential for Copland fans. --Dan Davis

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sampling of Copland's Movie Music.......2001-03-13

Copland wrote music for several movies, jumping from entertainment to documentaries and back. This CD contains music from both, some pieces recorded for the first time.

From Sorcery to Science is a light, almost frivilous, piece that does to various forms of "medicine" what Saint-Saens did to zoo animals. A witch's cauldron being stirred by dancing strings, the percussion-heavy medicine man, and so on so forth. The music is short, but so was the documentary.

The City is perhaps the most well-known of this collection of movie music, thanks especially to the Music for Movies compilation. I saw this movie in a course I took on Planning Theory; one of my classmates described it as "Fantasia for Planners." The movie was music-heavy with little narration, and, as is typical of these suites based on movie music, contained additional material to the base pieces presented here; but not much is missed in terms of new material. The documentary was long, drawn out, and repetitive, but nevertheless had its elements of humor. The movie promoted New Urbanist type communities opposed to conventional suburbs and inner-city density, this being a somewhat revolutary idea for its time.

The Cummington Suite: if any of this music sounds familar, don't be surprised. Copland borrowed themes from Down A Country Lane and Sunday Afternoon Music (or was it vice versa?), both solo piano works. It does have a smattering of new material, though. Simple, populous style Copland.

The North Star is a war-like piece, with increasing tensity as the piece prograsses. Reminds me a bit of Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky, but not nerely to the level of depth and drama. Interestingly, Ira Gerswin wrote the lyrics to the Song of the Guerillas.

Also be sure the look into the Red Pony and Something Wild, two of Copland's other movie scores. And we're still waiting for more music from Of Mice and Men; there are two pieces from this movie in Music for Movies, just enough to make you want more.

4 out of 5 stars Copland rarities, recently unearthed and expertly performed.......2001-02-26

If you enjoyed the excellent "Copland: Music for Films" by Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony on RCA, toss this one in your shopping cart. Besides pure enjoyment of the music for its own sake, you'll get a deeper appreciation of how pervasive and influential his musical voice has become in American culture. On this disc, only the score for "The North Star" was attached to a Hollywood release. The other selections are from what you might call specialty films, two produced for exhibits at the 1939 New York World's Fair and one by the federal government during World War II. These selections are simultaneously unfamiliar yet familiar. You've probably never seen the films, so these specific scores may be entirely new to you in that sense. Still, the Copland style is recognizable.

    wow,this thing is unreal....
i was turned on by this band by exposure to the trailer for the film "stuntrocker" - a bit of extreme 70's bad-film nastiness.
what caught my attention was the music...a curious mix of "heavy metal" with southern california party-rock.imagine if Spinal Tap where a REAL band, and not a parody(at least not a blatantly obvious one).lyrics are ridiculous, riffs are kinda cheesy but fairly heavy & fuzzy (fu manchu, anyone??)for the time.
All N.W.O.B.H.M fans (though they arent British),"stoner rock" fans & assorted heavy metal historians consider this an essential purchase!!

I saw the group when i was watching the movie Stuntrock. The music is solid and pure. Just the way i like it. The music they make is hard to describe, what i can tell is that it's one of it's kind and in my opinion a must have.

4 out of 5 stars If you like SAMAEL, KOVENANT, KMFDM, or MINISTRY..........2005-03-09

One thing you'll notice about my reviews, I try to only review the releases I like. I don't want to thrash anybody, you know? It's hard enough to get your own music recorded and released, let alone find success... With that said,

I WILL NOW REVIEW MY OWN BAND! YOU READ IT RIGHT, I do play guitars and keyboards for Psionic.

Nu-Tech Cyber Sorcery was recorded with a Roland 24 track HD recorder. I think the sound quality is pretty damn good, with that taken into consideration. It's as good as anything that's come out of Abyss Studio, that's for sure. The drums are a little flat, but that's because they were programmed. We should have added a little bit of reverb to them. The guitar sound is awesome on some songs, and a little better than average on others, but the bass sounds great on every song. The best song on here (in my opinion) is "Deleted Souls", although there are a couple close seconds: "Demon Energy Cube" and "Serpentine Frequencies" The first track, "Thought Bomb" has really intricate drum programming , some stellar keyboard work, and the heaviest guitars on the CD. The keyboard sounds were step-recorded, which means that the keyboard itself has a multi-track recorder built-in (so to speak) and once you save your work on the keyboard, it can be played back with a touch of a button perfectly every time. And don't tell me that this is "cheating" because every friggin' band that uses keys these days does that, except for a couple Power Metal bands... Put it this way, if you listen to the bands I've mentioned above (SAMAEL, KOVENANT, KMFDM, or even STATIC-X) you will like this CD - just for the fact that an American band pulled off this sound!!! Think about it, most American bands try to copy what the Euopeans do, except they usually do a lousy job!! I can say (without bragging) that we are certainly comparable to the European Industrial/Rock/Metal bands. Check out our newest CD called "Manifest" you can get it through our website at www.psionic.info
