Customer Reviews:
EASTWOOD IS ALSO A GREAT SONGWRITER.......2007-06-11
This is a "semi" career spanning CD (and the only decent one in existence) of the movie themes from some great Eastwood movies. The earlier pieces are from his days in TV and transition to movies. The more mature work with Lennie Niehaus displays Clint's artistry, no not only as an actor, award winning director, but great composer. My only complaint is the disc is missing the off-beat and totally original jazzy "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from THE GAUNTLET.
The disc does contain his wonderful A PERFECT WORLD and THE UNFORGIVEN. Why Eastwood never won an Oscar for some of his original scores is a mystery to me. He is more celebrated as a director than as an actor only because he won more awards in that category and his acting style was known for it's low-keyed and reactionary style. But the Clint Eastwood the musician cannot be dismissed and here is that more than proves his versatility. A known jazz lover, for fans of that genre, give a listen to WHY SHOULD I CARE from "True Crime", another great Eastwood composition.
The remainder of the disc is a salute to Eastwood and his work with a heavy emphasis on the jazz.
First rate. I've been a fan since his directoral debut in PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Little did I realize what a great composer he would turn out to be.
A must for any fans as there are no single soundtacks available from his movies featuring his work.
Play Misty For Me.......2005-12-20
Nearly an hour and 20 minutes of "Music For the Movies of Clint Eastwood". What fan wouldn't be happy with this CD? 23 Tracks, and a great compilation. From the early TV days, the "Theme from Rawhide"(this was about the time I fell in love with Clint, I think I was about 8)performed by Frankie Lane, and Spaghetti Western, the "The, Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"(does anyone REALLY know the words to this one, and does it really matter?)to the romantic Doe Eyes"(the love theme from "Bridges of Madison County", the music will have you reliving the great moments from great films that just say Clint!
The first half of the album features both Clint's own works and the fabulous talented composers he has worked with. Ennio Moricone's oh so recognizable style("The Good, The Bad and the Ugly"), the moving music of Lennie Niehaus("Pale Rider"), the haunting sounds from Lalo Schfrin("Dirty Harry Theme", where you will relive Clint doing the, "Do you feel lucky punk?" speech), and some other wonderful musicians including the great Civil War and Western sounding "Theme from Outlaw Josey Wales", by Jerry Fielding, and Erroll Garner's"Play Misty For Me", a gorgeous piano rendition. Some of Clint's own works, included are "Claudia's Theme" from "Unforgiven" "Kate's Theme" from "Absolute Power", "Big Fran's Baby" from "A Perfect World", and of course the mesmerizing and above mentioned "Doe Eyes".
Second half is a 10 part instrumental suite, "Clint Eastwood, An American Filmmaker Suite". This is music composed and conducted by Lennie Niehaus for the PBS "American Masters" documentary " Eastwood: Out of the Shadows" The music tells Clint's story musically, and it flows beautifully and emotionally. It has a little of everyting, including some great jazzy numbers. The orchestration and the musicians capture the journey wonderfully. For list of all 23 track titles, see buying info. You can also listen to samples from there.
The quality of the CD is excellent. A pamphlet with some production notes, and the tracks is included. There are some great pix of Clint as well. It doesn't have ALL his films included. Hopefully the music form "Kelly's Heroes"("Burning Bridges) and "The Beguiled"(more from Lalo Schifrin) will make the sequel album!
Take it in your car and listen to it when you are stuck in traffic, and it will take you somewhere else for a while.Just say "Play Misty For Me" and hit track 8. Highly recommended for the Eastwood fan. And for those that can't get enough, I would also recommend the soundtrack to "Bridges of Madison County". One of the most romantic albums I ever heard.
"Head 'Em Up, Move 'Em On....Keep Them Doggies Rollin...Rawhide!"
Enjoy....Laurie
"Go ahead, make your day!".......2004-06-21
There's really not too much to say about this, except that any big fan of "Clint Eastwood", or at least the majority of these movies should like this. What I enjoy most are the tracks from his westerns, as they all set a nice mood, but the rest are very good as well. I can't help but think this would have been twice as good had it contained dialogue from each of these films too. Overall a great collection for the fan. After all, if there's one thing "Clint" knows about as much as his acting, it's his music.

How can this be five stars?.......2005-01-29
I feel suspect for giving this album five stars. I mean everyone who is enthralled by a given album hands them out like a kindergarten teacher who is thrilled that the students are actualy retaining anything. Simple answer - Firewater is the teacher! Like the newly revived CVB or vintage Waits, they simply made an album like no-one does anymore. A variety of styles by a singular voice. So when they pass over the indie rock stylings of "Don't Make It Stop", it feels like a revelation. It's like a great foreign film that suddenly turns to english. So if you like a mixed bag of styles delivered by a band and a singer that make them their own, this is your ticket to ride. Simply fantastic. And while you are at it pick up The Ponzi Scheme. This is a great band that people will discover years after they disappear from the scene. Great lyrics, great music, a singular style. Though I don't play it 24/7, whenever it makes it out, I feel like something is going on, somewhere!--
Great songs. Don't make it Stop!!!!.......2004-12-02
I just can't get enough. I just came across Firewater recently and just love their music. This is a great album. It is a bit of everything. It has blues, rock and pop. Buy it.
life is beautiful.......2003-12-31
It's a beautiful life when you love what you do. This is the firewater gospel.
Firewater is a noteworthy band that started out as an indie supergroup featuring members from Cop shoot Cop, the Jesus Lizard, and Soul Coughing.
Firewater isn't a supergroup anymore. Their lineup has changed several times, but it currently features Tod A., Tamir Muskat, Oren Kaplan, and Paul Wallfisch. For the first time in a few years Firewater is just a band and they have never sounded better.
Firewater creates dazzling and alluring music from the ugliness of everyday life. Their song subjects range from boredom, to missed chances and even suicide. Firewater gives these subjects a human touch, a soul. Their music is very honest and very real. This is very apparent on their fourth release, `The man on the burning tightrope.'
The album starts off with `Fanfare'. This is a bright instrumental piece that is reminiscent of that glimmer of hope at the beginning of the day. (Did I mention that this was short, much like that sliver of hope?) `Fanfare' blends perfectly into the next tune, `Anything at All'.
This is somewhat of a shattered love song. The chorus of the song is, `I would give you anything, if I had anything at all.' Although it also reminds you of the dark side of love, ` Suckers are willing to take anything at all'.
Another great melody on this album is, `Dark Days Indeed'. This song plays like a drunken gypsy caravan that is lost in the wilds of Eastern Europe. Even though this song is called, `Dark Days Indeed' lyrics like, ` I made the devil dance for me and spat into his eye!' shows us that this song is somewhat joyful and definitely rebellious. It reminds us that there's many ways to view life. Often it's through a good bottle of bourbon and a little dance.
The title track, `The man on the burning tightrope' casts Tod A. as the ringmaster. It's a moody piece lavished in carnival sounds. This is seemingly about your appearance to others. At the point when you are truly damaged, the ringmaster reminds you that you could have been somebody. That hurts most of all.
The song, `The Truth Hurts' is strange. It's basically an answering machine message backed by cheesy, sixties pop sounds. (Although you may want to listen carefully to Nicole Blackman's fiery message.)
`Secret' seems to be a continuation of, `The Truth Hurts'. This exhibits Firewater's skill. The band showcases a new twangy, tex-mex sound for this song.
`The Vegas Strip' is awash in sleazy trumpets and drenched in cheap booze.
This song is drunk and has a showgirl hanging off of each arm.
`Ponzi's Revenge' reveals the return of the illustrious Ponzi. Guess what? He's stolen all of your money and is living it up in the Caribbean. Like Ponzi you should dance your troubles away to this song.
Firewater has consistently proven that they are a great and diverse band. Through out their previous albums they have explored such assorted sounds as Indian wedding music, middle eastern folk rock to good ole' rock'n'roll.
However on ` The man on the burning tightrope' they finally find a good balance between their distinct sounds. It's very obvious on this album that firewater love what they do and in the process have shown the rest of us that it's a beautiful life.
This album rockz tha hizouse.......2003-07-02
go buy this album immediately. It'll rock your socks.
Don't Make It Stop.......2003-06-23
They've done it again. Those crazy lads of Firewater have produced another gem.
The Man on the Burning Tightrope is a circus nightmare like Mr. Kite on a bad acid trip. Play it for your friends, under hot lights if you want them to confess deeply held secrets. Full of hope and optimism, if you're looking forward to falling into a spiralling inferno. A rock'in 3 ring punk klezmer celebration of doom, interspersed with burlesque, t.v. themes for shows too dangerous to air, and drunken carousel rides.
Tod A is a genius. Too bad he can't use his incredible intellect for good instead of evil.

Captured on this one disc are the great film scores Bernard Herrmann did for several classic science fiction films of the '50s and '60s. Herrmann did not go in for simple atmospherics and cheap orchestral tricks with his music. He knew that the music would have to conjure a mental world all its own. This is especially true in "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad". It's a tone poem Rimsky-Korsakov could have written. The best here is "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with its use of the (then) revolutionary theremin. It's a clear masterpiece, all on its own. --Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
The other essential Herrmann CD.......2004-08-25
I like to think of this CD as being the "Forbidden Planet" of film scores CDs -- technically marvelous, consistently enthralling on an emotional and mental level, and way ahead of its time.
Unfortunately it is not available as I write this. Last time I visited this Amazon site, there was one CD for sale for almost $60. You'll have to make up your own mind if this music is worth that much to you. I made my choice long ago to own this and keep it in my library, conceivably forever.
With five film scores, 35 tracks and 72 minutes of the most high grade science fiction music, this CD should be considered the definitive source for Bernard Herrmann's non-Hitchcock film scores. Not only did he conduct the National Philharmonic Orchestra in these recordings, the composer approved of the Phase 4 recording and mixing. It is, as the notes say, a unique listening experience.
I have found this CD to be a constant source of imagination, vision and scope in film music that still has no peer 30 years after its production. The opening sequence to "Journey To The Center of the Earth" is better than it ever was in the theater, where the music was a hackneyed backdrop to an incredilbe film. In this CD, the music dwarfs the film action.
My favorite sequence in this issue is Herrmann's work for the Ray Bradbury novella "Fahrenheit 451", which was recast in some minds recently when "Fahrenheit 911" appeared in theaters throughout the country.
Every bit of the miracle of that little film is projected through this eerily wonderful music, which seems to comprise a world of its own. The sections help recall Sontag's first trip on the fire engine, the bedroom fire and the finale.
The lengthiest tract on this disk is the near 27 minute set from the film "Gulliver's Travels". I've never seen the movie but will attest that the music is out of this world in a very British way. This section seems closer to following the musical rules for a suite than any other on this disk.
Decca had the good sense to return the Bernard Herrmann-conducted Hitchcock scores to circulation, so maybe they will do the same with this miraculous disk. Again, the notes are nothing to write home about, but even with that considered no lover of film music or the music of Bernard Herrmann can consider their library complete without this disk.

Increible Brasil!!!!!!.......2003-07-30
Azymuth, the best Funky and Groovy Brazilian Jazz !!!!!!.......2002-03-16
This album is absolutely awesome, and if on top of that you add without a single doubt one of two of the most famous and best cuts ever performed by Azymuth, the combination could not be any better. "Samba da Barra" is that superb cut; the other one is "Partido Alto" from their Outubro album. This group has been an outstanding representative of Brazilian Jazz and Brazilian Enchanting Rhythms around the world for over three decades, and this album is easily a perfect example. Buy it today, soon you'll be transported to Brasil and their peerless Natural Beauty.
Brilliant musicianship, innovative sounds.......1999-09-07
I like this band because they move me. They're sensual, yet they drive when they want to. The grooves are tight, the melodies are serious, and their unspoken communication shines throughout this recording. I highly recommend this recording as a first listen to this incredible group.

Johnny's Best.......2001-07-27
I've owned this recording on LP and CD as well as several others of Johnny's. This is his very best recording. One reason why this CD is exceptional is the brilliant driving drumming of New Orleans' own John Vidacovich. It's not to be missed.
Johnny Adams, former greatest living soul singer.......1998-06-24
Johnny Adams was until his recent passing the world's greatest living soul singer, and this album is proof. Combining his soulful, hearfelt vocals with the peerless R&B tunes of the inimitable Percy Mayfield, Adams creates a flat-out masterpiece. If you love the blues, soul, R&B or even jazz, you owe it to yourself to hear this.
