5 out of 5 stars A gem from Abbado's past.......2005-09-04

I think Abbado has evolved into our greatest living conductor, but it was a long road. In the beginning he sowed exceptional promise, but there were years when he turned out careful, well-balanced, uninspiring performances. This isn't one of them, unlike his tchaikovsky with the CSO. He had chemistry with the LSO, and this colleciton of "unknown" Mussorgsky is dramatic and committed from first to last.

Everyone has already pointed that out, but if you have reservations about a conductor who is sometimes demeaned as "a-bored-o" I wanted to alleviate your fears.

5 out of 5 stars Abbado's early recording of Mussorgsky.......2005-08-23

The recording was made before Abbado became the ultimate interpreter of Mussorgsky, but one can see why he became so.

The analog to digital remastering is fine.

The orchestra playing is colourful.

The main reason to purchase it, though, is the repertoire:
Mussorgsky's first version of Night on the Bare Mountain, and the composer's choral works.
All are wonderfully expressed.

I see that Abbado recorded a newer cd of similar content.
Perhaps you should check it out too.

5 out of 5 stars Mussorgsky's incredible early choral works.......2003-09-29

Yes, the original version of "Night on Bald Mountain" performed on this CD is much better than the Rimsky version. It's ferocious and almost terrifying at times. But it is Abbado's recordings of Mussorgsky's early choral works that make this CD such a gem. I have never been able to understand why these brilliant works have not achieved wider currency. Outside of Abbado, very few conductors have recorded these pieces (a Valeri Polyansky CD on Chandos Records has a couple of them and Abbado recorded all of them again for Deutsche Grammophon a few years ago but this CD is sadly not available in the U.S.).

If you are captivated--as I am--by the choral pieces from Boris Godunov and Khovanshchina, then you will surely enjoy Mussorgsky's early choral works. The choral pieces on this CD, though written by a young Mussorgsky, are no less inspired than those from his later operas. "Joshua" and the "Chorus of Priestesses" are from Mussorgsky's first opera Salammbo, which he left unfinished after completing only one act (Salammbo was recorded about 20 years ago in Italy for CBS Records but this recording has unfortunately never been transferred to CD). "The Destruction of Sennacherib" and "Oedipus in Athens" are independent choral pieces, both of which are quite striking and contain moments of great depth. To be sure, there is little of Mussorgsky's more 'advanced' harmony in these pieces, of the sort employed in the song-cycle Sunless, for instance. But it scarcely matters! These pieces stand on their own. The "Destruction Of Sennacherib" contains a central section that is supposed to depict the Angel of Death, which in my view is one of the most arresting and haunting passages in all of Russian--or Western--choral music.

I should also note that the Prelude and Galitsin's Journey from Khovanshchina live up to the quality of Abbado's live recording of the complete Khovanshchina on Deutsche Grammophon. (I have to agree with the other reviewer that Abbado is the greatest conductor of Mussorgsky.) I would frankly recommend all of Abbado's Mussorgsky recordings, but especially his Khovanshchina. If you don't want to get the entire opera, try the Sony CD with Abbado conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, which contains some further excerpts from Khovanshchina not included on the CD under review here. Anatoly Kotcherga's singing on Shaklovity's aria is profoundly moving.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the original 'Night'.......2000-06-15

If you've heard Mussorgsky's 'Night on Bald Mountain' before chances are that it was the Rimsky-Korsakov version, which is much more familiar to the world (the introduction is used in countless commercials, movies, TV shows etc. and it was used in a truncated form in Disney's original Fantasia). While Rimsky's version is wonderful and I enjoy it very much, the original surpasses it in both originality and excitement. This piece was radically ahead of its time, so it's no wonder Rimsky toned it down when he re-orchestrated it and rewrote certain parts- he, like most people of the time, probably didn't understand it. Rimsky managed to retain the spookiness of the piece, but what his version lacks is the original's percussive nature and outright savagery. The conclusion of the original is much more exciting than Rimsky's 'morning breaking with church bells'- it represents the orgy of the pagan spirits and witches with much more vividness, and has more of a climax. If you have a recording of the Rimsky version I suggest this strongly, and if you have neither version I suggest it even more.

Besides 'Night' this recording features a very good selection of other Mussorgsky works (most of which are Rimsky versions, though). The 'Chorus of the People in the Temple' from 'Oedipus in Athens' is one of my favorites. Abbado, as usual, is marvelous as are the LSO and Chorus. I'd recommend this CD for the original 'Night' if nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars Infinitely surperior version of "Night on Bald Mountain".......2000-05-24

A superb disc throughout, yet the original version of "Night on Bald Mountain" is what sets it apart. After listening to this rarity I was shocked at the liberties Rimsky-Korsakov took in rewriting it to the more "listener friendly" version most of us are so familiar with. They're two completely different pieces; the original sounding almost as if it could be from the 20th century, while the altered piece retaining a definite romantic sound. I would venture to say that, in its original form, it may well have been inspiration for Stravinsky's "The Rite Of Spring".

The other works are certainly worth a listening as well. Unfortunately, however, most of them are Rimsky-Korsakov versions. It would have been preferable to have all original pieces, but I'll take what I can get.

        Album Description

Evgeni Svetlanov, along with Kondrashin and Rozhdestvensky, was one of the three most famous Russian conductors of the later 20th century.

While A Night on Bald Mountain and the Polovtsian Dances are thrice familiar (and beloved), the other works on this colorful disc are rarer. Balakirev's Suite in D minor is a skillful orchestration of four piano pieces by Chopin, which here sound surprisingly (and comfortably) Russian. The Destruction of Sennacherib is an independent choral cantata by Mussorgsky based on a poem by Byron. Jesus Navinus is another Mussorgsky choral piece, this time salvaged from his previously abandoned setting of the exotic novel Salammbô by Gustave Flaubert.

These are original recordings from 1963-1985.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome little CD, Multiple Versions Available.......2006-07-22

I have had this CD for some time now, and it is a cool single. This version has a Gristle mix, which had mixing help from Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. The title track, and forclosure of a dream are both album versions, but the Gristle mix is a neat addition because it fortells of woes soon to come in the megadeth mix (Risk...a whole lot of over mixing there).

There are also two other versions of this single available, One has track two Edited Gristle, and Skin O My Teeth Live. The other has Break Point and Go To Hell as the other 2 tracks.

All in all, good Single to have, collectors Item, and for low prices going used. Buy this sigle if you don't want the whole album, or buy it because you are a collector by me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, fun classical.......2005-06-01

I am a teacher and this is classical music, but more driving and "fun," because it is, of course, punk music from the early scene (mostly UK). All the songs are well done (in my opinion), and I enjoy the variety greatly. It's such great mood music. The first time I ever heard it is when some friends of mine played it for their wedding march music, good choice (well at least for them).

2 out of 5 stars Be Very Careful.......2004-01-01

An interesting concept, but to me, a bit flawed. First of all, I'd rather have a comp. CD of all these songs done by the original artists, but that's not what this is. I'm rating it two stars because it was a somewhat fascinating experience to listen to these songs played by a competant orchestra. BUT, after one listen, you say, "Wow, that was pretty neat," but after repeated listenings, the sentiment is more like, "This is growing tiresome fast. Where are my good old punk CDs?"

If you dig classical music, you might get a bit more use out of this CD than I did. I enjoy classical now and then, but I'd rather listen to the masters, than listen to this type of gimmick CD. To me, it just doesn't hold up. After a while, this CD reminded me of bad elevator muzak.

I suggest you take full advantage of Amazon's provided sound bites and think long and hard if this is the type of CD that will get repeated playings or become just another dust collector sitting unused on the shelf.

          4 out of 5 stars Punk Harmonies.......2001-06-04

I first heard about this recording on John Peel's BBC World Service show. First he played the instrumental version of the Undertones' Teenage Kicks, and then the original. What the juxtaposition gave me was a sense of the melodious and the beautiful in punk music. And the rest of the album is similarly an exploration of three-chord progressions using string arrangements. There was sense to all of this. As opposed to, say, the lack of sense in having Metallica play with a string orchestra heavily distorted. Buy this. If you like sweet music, punk or classical, you'll love it.

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

          1 out of 5 stars Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04

FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31

After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

5 out of 5 stars Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20

After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-10

Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14

I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.
