Among producers, his name remains the simile of choice. If some hotshot studio whiz emerges in, say, hip-hop, he's inevitably labeled "the Phil Spector of rap." That's quite a statement given that decades have passed since this boy from the Bronx remodeled rock & roll to suit his own visions of grandeur. The story of the girl-group auteur is a fascinating one. Spector composed a No. 1 hit at 17 (the Teddy Bears' "To Know Him Is to Love Him," its title inspired by the inscription on his father's tombstone). By 19 he was head of A&R for Atlantic Records. By the time he was 22, he'd founded his own label (Philles) and was churning out Wall of Sound hits at an unprecedented clip, beginning with the Crystals' "He's a Rebel." good box set, great bargain........2007-08-03

This box set has been around for while and is a great bargain at $18.98, marked down from $75. Four discs of Spector-produced tracks, when he was at his peak, including the famous Christmas album. The Ronettes, The Crystals, Righteous Bros.and others in the Wall Of Sound which changed pop music forever. It comes in an LP-sized box with a large, nicely-done book of the lyrics. A must-have for any student of rock history or the nostalgia-seeker. The Christmas album alone is worth the price. This box set takes us back to a more innocent time when he was a teen millionaire and many would say, a musical genius.

All the hits are here played back on a vintage Ampex 351 tube tape recorder by Larry Levine and Phil himself in NYC.
If you put the treble all the way up on your set, this set can sound OK.
Why the Christmas Album was put in here I'll never know.
I wish Rhino would have put this box together instead of ABKCO.

Greatest bargain.......2007-05-16

A few months ago I ordered this set for only about $20 & it is the best CD bargain I've ever had. This set originally sold for about $75 back in the 90's (glad I waited to buy it!)& I keep wondering why it's so cheap now. (Is Spector not allowed to make money on his music anymore?) It is a BIG set in an LP size box (I store it with my old LPs on my shelf),comes with a great big book printed on high quality paper, comes with the Christmas album & even a button. Only thing not big about this set is the sound quality, it's typical 80s & early 90s thin-sounding CD quality, not exactly what I'd call a wall of sound. Also the book has the lyrics to all the songs except the ones on the Christmas album. So if you can get past the fact that Spector may have killed someone 40 years after these recordings (if he did,how could he? He produced John Lennon's "Imagine" for goodness sake!)this is still some of the 60s greatest music.

Cruisin' Music Extraordinaire.......2007-05-15

When I saw the "Back to Mono" box for 20 bucks, I first thought of the barrage of criticism that greeted this set when first released more than 15 years ago and, in particular, the near universal condemnation of the absolutely horrendous digital remastering that marred what should have been an unbeatable compilation. Then I thought, "So what? I LOVED this music 45 years - AUGH! - ago! This is the background music of my life! And a great collection! And I don't have much of it, vinyl or otherwise." So I bought it.

And yes, the remastering is indeed horrible, particularly when listened to through earphones. But if you can pump this music through a tinny 5-inch speaker, perhaps boosted from a '57 Chevy, it all sounds pretty damn fine. So: don't play it on your audiophile equipment: my vintage boom box does the music all the honor it requires.

And what music. A lot of this stuff didn't chart in the New York metropolitan area, so I'd never heard several tracks, but it's all vintage, no filler, hits and non-hits, lots of Ronnie Spector and the Ronnettes, the Crystals, and fewer, but important, sides from Curtis Lee), Ben E. King, Bob B. Soxx, the Righteous Brothers, the majestic Tina Turner and that sidekick of hers, and, of course, the patented Spector Wall of Sound, complete with timpani, maracas, glockenspiels, strings, horns, full brass section, yackety sax, everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink. On the tree of rock, Phil Spector is a taproot (and Bruce Springsteen the most celebrated emulator/branch).

But let's be serious: these are very basic sentiments, harking back to a very different, much simpler time, before Vietnam, Watergate, and universal irony really invaded our consciousness (the first 29 tracks before the Kennedy assassination). The Spector chronology tracks along through LBJ's "Great Society" and civil rights legislation, Nixon, and the onset of cynicism, skepticism, and the beginning of a much more complicated social and political fabric. Through all this, we underestimate the role this and other top-forty music played in shaping our imaginations: it played, constantly, to GROUPS of people in packed cars, at parties and dances, not to one solitary listener through iPod earphones, shaped romantic vocabularies, taught kids how to say "I love you" and how to rebel against parents who screamed "that guy's no good!" My wife's parents.

In short, this music and its peer recordings helped fill in pieces of our emotional identities. In this set we hear lots of 16 year olds pouring out their hearts into diaries via girl-group doo-wop. From the Righteous Brothers, a more mature, wistful kind of heartbreak with full choirs of strings. And from Ike and Tina, my god - River Deep, Mountain High has enough emotional energy to blow a bank of Marshalls, a clear high-point on a collection of high points.

The 96-page booklet is almost worth the price of the box. I didn't need the lyrics - many of them, goofy, saccharine, maudlin, trite as can be, are grafted into my brain, courtesy of that Chevy speaker - but the photos of those wonderful, innocent, vibrant faces, the essays (one by Tom Wolfe), and the discography are all splendid.

So: if you've ever loved this music - that's a significant qualifier: my kids (all in 20s and 30s) think it's virtually unadulterated corn (with the exception of River Deep, Loving Feeling, and a few other tracks) - forget about the atrocious remastering. (I'll bet Rhino will take care of that, sooner or later, and we'll hear these in gorgeous, layered monaural.) Just buy this now while you can get all four discs, the big booklet, and the huge box for 20 dollars or less. Then boogaloo or slow-dance your baby to these legendary tunes.

Essential Musical History.......2007-05-13

With his name in the news, it is easy to dismiss Phil Spector for current accusations, but you can never deny his place is Rock'N'Roll pantheon of musical touchstones.

This collection is an absolute must have for all those who love great rock and roll and the extras in this box are phenomenal. The booklet documenting these historic recordings is amazing, as are the collection musicians that sat in on these sessions (Sonny Bono, Brian Wilson, Leon Russell, etc.).

Just having the classic recordings of The Ronettes (Be My Baby, Walkin' In The Rain, Baby I Love You), The Crystals, Darlene Love -- along with Ike and Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High" (referred to by George Harrison as the greatest single ever made) and the complete "Phil Spector's Christmas Album" -- makes this collection indispensable!!!

THis has to be the best album ever... Every song is absolute superb:) From the very beginning of the first song, through the ending of the last is pure magic. I'm never getting tired of listening to this CD.

Hard Southern Rock At Its Finest!.......2007-05-09

Wow! What a great sophomore effort from the Showdown! Very little screaming, especially when compared to their debut, and that's a good thing. This band is clearly finding its voice. Edgier and harder than traditional Southern rock (Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, 38 Special), The Showdown reveals maturity beyond their years. Begining with the raucous Fanatics and Whores, possibly the best track on the CD, Temptation hits on all cylinders throughout. The fact this is Christian Rock should not sway you from purchasing. These guys hold their own against any secular band out there. The Showdown rocks!

New album = good. Old album = metal masterpiece.

Ok so the new album is a huge change from A Chorus of Obliteration, and I, like many others, was at first a little unsatisfied after the first listen. I'm gonna say that a few songs got me snakebit, but probably more of a python bite as opposed to the full on venomous Black Mamba bite that the A Chorus of Obliteration will strike you with. The name of the game for the Showdown has always been High-Voltage heavy metal. It stands true, just not quite as true as it did on the first album. The songs are incredibly slower than the first and there is definitely a lack of screams. That said, I am not one of those metalcore guys who only gets their kicks of screaming. BUT David Bunton has the best scream known to man. Hands down. So I was hoping for more of that on this album and was slightly disappointed in the lack of it. Fact is, David just has an amazing voice all around. Every song on this album is full of his voice which compliments the songs perfectly, like peanut butter and jelly. If any of you have ever seen The Showdown live, you have experienced getting snake bit, lightning bolts and all, and this new cd doesn't quite fit their live shows as well as A Chorus of Obliteration, but it still gets the job done. Now I find the cd very satisfying, it just took me a while to deal with the total change of pace. The cd is a great listen all the way through (with the possible exception of "It Drinks from Me" i still can't get into that one). I highly recommend this record, but not quite as much as I recommend the first one. Buy them both.

P.S. I don't mean to bash anyone else, but please for the love of Pete, do NOT believe what someone else said about there being a dash of Nickelback in there.

Aww Sh*t.......2007-04-25

Well, lookie here, we have yet another band that decided to go ditch their previous sound and make a boring radio rock album. Okay, here's the problem, I picked up The Showdown's first album, "A Chorus of Obliteration", because it was a catchy metal album with some excellent leads. It took me a while to get into, but I enjoyed it. But here, with "Temptation Come My Way", you might as well be another copy of Avenged Sevenfold's "City of Evil", which is just bland formulatic arena rock. I downloaded this CD, because I wanted to hear how it would be. Well, it was deleted from my hard drive after I listened to every track on this album. I am so disappointed with this CD. If you're into southern rock or radio music, you'll cream yourselves over this. Old Showdown fans, don't even bother.

Simply Incredible..........2007-04-03

This album starts out totally different than their first effort, actually, the whole cd is a masterpiece. Let me say it like this, If you took Metallica, Def Leppard, Randy Rhodes, Joe Satriani, Eddie VanHalen, AC/DC, Ozzy, Megadeath, Iron Maiden with a drop of Skynard, threw them all in a blender, cranked the volume and ripped the knob off you would have the sound that emits from these guys. They start with Whores and Fanatics and melt every track, including the heavy southern bluesy sound of It Drinks From Me, this is a powerful album with a great message to boot. Their cover of Kerry Livgren's "Carry On My Wayward Son" is a great move on their part to show the diversity of this album. This is a must if you are looking for a great Christian Metal Album that will completely rock your socks off. I could continue but get it for yourself, you will not be sorry.

Worth Repeating.......2007-05-14

I love this cd! It's too bad they only came out with one. I first saw/heard Life In Mono on MTV of all places and had to check them out. I love every single song on this cd and often listen to it on repeat in the car while driving.

Portishead, Olive, Esthero, Poe, Fionna Apple sound can be completely thought about with this album. Quite a bit off kilter than the others, but a contolled adventure. Mono has a varied sound enhanced by her voice.

There is much comparison but the contrast highlights all above. If drum and bass and some raw hip hop is your game this would be a great addition to your collection.

I happen to enjoy this album much more than I do Portishead's "Dummy". Funny how people mention this album/group being overrated: I see Portishead as being the overrated one... "Sour Times" was the only PH song i really liked, and that got played out FAST.

Not 5 star because I don't see it as a 'classic'... but I give it 4.5 - i think it comes close. Great sounds and styles at work here.

Amazing Despite de Mare's Lame Lyrics.......2006-08-15

The lushness and smooth, flowing sounds of this CD are what have kept me coming back to this CD for the past 10 years. Listening to them transports you back to 1965 and Bakelite telephones that never ring when you want a call from your man in his leisure suit and loafers. It's not quirky or chattering music, but it's so svelte and velvety in texture and rhythm that you just sit there and feel a contented sort of melancholy just to hear it.

Then, you hear a screeching banshee hiss her "s"s and whine in a nasal tone about how she can't find love and how her life is all messed up and her man is this and that. In about half the songs, it works, since you sort of close your eyes and imagine a nice 1960's drama set in a Londonian penthouse overlooking the Thames. Visions of avocado green and taupe carpet swirl in your head and you can get into that vibe...but on the other half of the songs with vocals, she's just plain irritating. You want to hear the complexities and little samples firing and there's this high-pitched keening going on. It's really hit-and-miss and de Mare's voice doesn't particularly add to the overall musicianship of the album, other than to render of slightly off-key notes that sort of fit the minor chords in some of the songs. The overall effect of her singing is to basically pigeonhole each song she sings as a wistful and brooding unrequited love/my-life-sucks paean so that there's no way you could play this at a party unless that was the mood you were going for. Hello Cleveland! is mysterious, deep, dark, intriguing and can be played anywhere and at anytime, but the vocals on the other tracks sort of limit the amount of playtime this CD can get outside of 1960's TV drama viewings.

I would say this is a definite buy since the music is good enough (you'll get relief from Siobahn's whining on Hello Cleveland! and if you get the Formica Blues single, a couple of those) to succeed in spite of Siobahn's best effort to blow the membrane out on her microphones and shatter the studio glass.

Mono hasn't been active since I was a college kid, but Marty Virgo's music is so good, I am not sure if he could have done anything afterwards that could even come close to this.

A MUST BUY.

Unexpectedly Good.......2007-07-25

I received this CD in the mail today and finished listening it. I had to write a reveiw of the album. This was definitely better than the last album she has put out. The stand-outs for this one are tracks 3,5,8,9. They display a quality that is playfully mature for Emma. Something we didn't see in the last go around. Her voice illicits a teasing temptation and at the same time an innocence that can only be displayed by the one who was known as Baby Spice. Yes, that image is somewhat following her, but in this album, if you didn't know her previous identity, you would never guess. She has left that identity behind in most ways, but lovingly brings it back in slight glimpses and only at times when she needs it for those certain moments in the songs. Over all, this is a wonderfull album and the bonus tracks are nothing to be ignored. They are as much a part of the ablum as all of the other songs. Downtown and Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps are great and give an extra dimention to this CD. This is a great third outing for Emma and she really is getting comfortable with this new image she has forged for herself. Hope you enjoy this CD as much as I have. You'll see, it is awesome.

WOW. This album is FAB baby........2007-06-30

I left this review for a few days so I could give it few listenings.
Free Me was a really great album, which I did not buy until March this year.
When I first listen to it I was blown away, I just did not expect this from Emma.
Now over to Life In Mono, First listening to It did not seem as good as Free Me.
But its a grower Emma has a sweet singing voice, which is pleasant to listen to. All the songs are good, still having the 60s bossa nova sound to most of them. Best tracks are. Life In Mono, Mischievous, He Loves Me Not, I Wasn't Looking, Take Me To Another Town, I'm Not Crying Over Yesterdays, All That You'll Be, and Something Tells Me.
All in all this is a solid album, and is as good as Free Me if not better.
well done Emma for a third fantastic album, and the best so far.
Rating Six stars, yes it really is that good.

Another great release... destined to be ignored in the US.......2007-06-20

Emma has given us another really great 60's influenced pop album. Out of all the Spice Girls, who would have imagined that the one called "Baby Spice" would end up with the most accomplished pop career? She chose substance over commercialism and really hit a home run with pop fans. Why hasn't she been asked to sing the next 007 theme song? Or alteast be a Bond girl in the next film?

Former Spice Girl, Emma Bunton's new album Life in Mono is a great step forward. It follows the same vein as her last album and I would highly recommend it if you loved her first.

Almost a Pop Masterpiece.......2007-04-26

Its really ironic that the most 'untalented' of the Spice Girls bunch would consistently provide us with such good material into the 2000s. Her last album "Free Me" was a classic that still finds plays on my Ipod.

1. If you love 1960s 'girl-group' melodies, you will love this.
2. If you like film-noir, and the soundtracks to the James Bond and Austin Powers series, you will love this.
3. If you like very poppy verse-chorus-verse, you will love this
4. If you're into Bossa Nova, Brazilian beach pop, and a little bit of reggae, you will adore this.

At its best, this sounds like a lost soundtrack to some 1960s French masterpiece by Truffaut. Very "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" but with a lot more zest and pep. You really have to get it and find out what I'm talking about.

The only downside is that the opening track is the weakest here, so many people may be put off. Do get this and discover a fabulous artist you may have neglected until now just because of her "Spice Girls" tag.

To sum up, Emma is a million times more accomplished and a real artist when compared to the remaining Spice Girls. This one album is better than all the others' solo releases combined. Seriously.

I had ordered this particular CD. However, After the second tried. i am yet to receive the CD. And i was really hoping the second CD could appear in my doorstep on the expected arrival date or 1 week later.

The cd is so phenomenal. The music is so traditional and it show so much of the greek culture. The bouzoki that they use which is a greek instrument was such a musical sound. In my school we are doing a GREEK PRESENTAION and we are going to use this music. We will dance to it and are going to be a success. So overall this is a superlative cd after all!!!!!!!!!!

The Greek Music is Great.......2003-05-05

I loved the strong rhythms and colorful harmonies of the traditional Greek numbers. The film score is lyrical but bland. This truly is a combination of "apples and oranges!"

This is a great album, great songs beginning to end. This new "Southern Hardcore" is a breath of fresh air. Very innovative. I don't know if there are other southern hardcore bands, so I can't compare Maylene to any others, but it seems they've really got this thing nailed down. I typically listen to Norma Jean, The Chariot, Underoath, but Maylene is now my most listened-to.

I love this band! Their guitars freakin rock and i like the singers unique singing style. Hes doing alot better job on this band than he did with Underoath with Changing of times. I think all the tracks are pretty awsome. tHere is not one that i do not like. So quick, go buy this album, there is no time to waste. And if you like these dudes you should listen to He Is Legend, cause He Is Legend sounds a bit like these guys.

And fix up your bar because this will put hair on you where hair doesn't belong. Crunchy riffs, clean solos, and ferocious vocals. It's a mix of hardcore and southern rock. The truth is in the music folks. Dixie-core...or Kentucky Fried Hardcore? Whatever you call it, it's an evolution. Give it a listen, you'll be out of Jack and back on your Harley and to your favorite bar in no time.

This music makes me want to beat people up and crash my head through concrete structures. Dirty, dirty guitar and Dallas' voice sounds better than ever. Love this stuff, actually prefer them to The Showdown, these guys are more gnarly and fun. I don't see why anyone who likes metal or balls out rock would not love this album. Five stars.

Riffs that would make Dimebag jealous, overlain with the competent yawp of frontman Dallas Taylor (of Underoath fame). Guaranteed to make you pump your fist and reach for a bottle of Jack Daniels. Will evoke images of cowboy bar fights. Christian, southern metalcore? You bet your ass.

A truly remarkable album that sounds like 'My Chemical Romance' and 'Fall Out Boy'. Even rock fans that don't like screaming shound'nt turn this one down.I personally hope this band makes it big. 'Fiends','Janus',and Queens are some of the best tracks on this album. 'Chemicals' has a catchy chorus:"C-c-c-chemicals and cannibals!/This kiss b-b-becomes medical,yeah!" I know it does'nt look catchy in review form,but it is very catchy in music form. I have'nt heard this CD in a few hours,and I can still hear it in my head! A 'must' for fans of rock and catchy tunes.

A Solid Sophomore Effort.......2007-05-18

"Fiends" by Chasing Victory is much different than the band's wonderful debut album "I Call This Abandonment", but it is good nonetheless. As mentioned by other reviewers, CV have decided to head in a brand new direction, musically speaking. On this album, you will hear similarities to bands such as The Classic Crime (in The Skeleton Key to a Skeleton), Matchbook Romance (in G.O.B. vs. Tony Wonder), or even The Bled (in the lead-in to Rapture Raptors). Though CV have cut out much of the screaming, it is still present in spurts. The first four songs on this album are solid, then the quality declines a bit. Overall, however, this was a very good effort.

I've been listening to Chasing Victory since their EP was released a couple of years back. It's amazing to see the progress that the band has made over the years. This new album is a mixture of old and new. The band has taken a more melodic approach toward their music by combining their signature guitar riffs with Adam Harrell's Jeff Buckley esque vocals. This is no longer a screamo outfit, but more a defined alternative band. Highlights of the cd include, "Zombies", "Wolves" and the unforgettable "Fiends" which is a track that takes a shot at phony music fans and kids that tend not to listen to music, but listen and act upon the trends. CV has made a huge stride from their debut album and this is a strong sophomore effort. This is a very good conceptual album that should be given a chance by all. Even all you old CV fans. You just might find something that you like.

Solid Experimental Rock.......2007-05-08

This album veers off the course set by their first album and enters into a more experimental zone of rock rather than just plain emo. And its a perfect fit for them. The singer can sing high and weird and the guitars and tones used in this album swirl about with a beautiful ambient effect remenicent of Mars Volta. I also like this album because the lyrics are more practical than in the last. Each album title deals with a sin that must be faced. Great effort.

Mono can be compared to Explosions in the Sky, and it is understandable. Their songs start off soft and builds up slowly to a raging climax just like Explosions in the Sky. You Are There will please all fans of EitS and all fans of beautiful instrumental music in general.

Addictive Post-Rock.......2007-05-23

I can never seem to get enough of this album. While Mono's melancholic post-rock sound reminds more often than not of Explosions in the Sky, their progression into the songs' climaxes are less steeped and lead to less bombastic "explosions", which help make the overall style of the Japanese band a bit "quieter" than that of their Texan counterparts.

Having heard three other of their albums, including their work alongside World's End Girlfriend, I can say this is their best production so far. Too bad I was sick when they came through town...

Is the word I would use to describe the sound that this record brings, same goes for the like the album art. The opening track "the flames beyond the cold mountain" is an epic start to the album and builds anticipation and suspense, just what I look for to begin a cd such as this one. Although the record is extremely beautifully sounding I also found at times being drawn into the music so much that it conjured up a mixture of feelings and images, maybe that was due to a lack of sleep. Apart from that every other time I listen to it I am soothed with beautiful sound scapes and relaxed but on the tips of my toes at the same time. This album shows a great example Tokyo's finest, most epic and fixating band. I suggest if you really want to be astounded by an album buy this one. Extremely swooning

That album will give you chills.......2006-09-03

Why does it seem to be so important to categorize bands and music in general? I saw a lot of "post-something" in the reviews of this album, and it just doesn't make any sense. Do you really think that these musicians care about what category their art is gonna fall into as they craft it? These Japanese geniuses do what they do best without caring for labels, if you people had been fortunate enough to see them live, you wouldn't try to fit them anywhere...
If you want to write a useful review for readers to know a bit more what they're getting into, comparing Mono to their buddies in Pelican and their labelmates Explosions In The Sky seems slighly more relevant to me, rather than trying to figure out what the hell kind of music they're making.
I saw these guys open for Pelican, and I just had to buy "You Are There" at the show. You're not likely to find this kind of hauntingly beautiful experience with any other band. Their 10+mn compositions go crescendo, making your legs shake as the walls of noise follow the quiet melodies.
Just listen to "The Flames Beyond The Cold Mountain" or "Moonlight" with your eyes closed, and you'll see what I mean. "You Are There" is an enchanting experience, it's not the most technically complex album ever, but it simply swallows you in its own universe, leaving you in awe when it's over. Oh, and it's produced by Steve Albini by the way...
No need to classify this release, except in the masterpiece section.

Good Album, Great Band, Okay Song-writing.......2007-02-21

Again, I want to rate the album 5 stars, but like with their latest offering, flaws prevent me...I know, the Children-of-Bodomish "Hell Can't Stop Us Now" is great, and so is the next three tracks after that. I would even say that the first five songs are flawless and smart, but then it gets a little worse...I agree with Timothy Perrine that this album in places sounds too formulaic or downright uninspiring. Even the first five songs lack originality, I can handpick its counterparts in other band's discography if I wanted to...This is a solid debut, but it is way overrated, as the problem is actually 99% of modern metal sounds exactly like The Showdown's debut...Oh, and the name has got to go...But after all I am giving this 4 stars because the band shows signs of potential greatness, and it is especially evident on the closing song, a slow semi-balad turns death metal scorcher...To fast forward to present day, I prefer "Temtation Come My Way" a lot more...But that is another story...To sum up, The Showdown could be great and their two albums are the evidence. They are with no doubt very skillful and talented bunch, but to achieve greatness of Mastodon, 80's Metallica or ANY Megadeth record,not to mention Dark Tranquility or Opeth,well, THAT takes to quote "Syriana" "Luck and hard work". The Showdown seem to show singns of both so let's give them a few years...Megadeth wasn't built in a day...

Classic thrash meets numetal.......2006-10-10

I first saw these guys play with Project 86... My first reaction was that they are damned talented and they know how to put on an entertaining show, but I have never really been into the screaming. Well, since this show, my friends have gotten really into The Showdown and I have to admit, this cd has really grown on me. The instrumentation is remeniscent of 80's/90's thrash metal like Metallica or Tourniquet. The singing features mostly screaming, which is admittedly not my favorite style, but the strength of the guitars (with tons of great metal riffs and solos) and drums (excellent double-kicking and blazing hands fills) take me back to that great show with Project 86 and I am quickly caught up in the intensity and authentic energy that is a stark reminder of what metal used to be... now that I think of it, this cd could easily pass as an unreleased early 90's Tourniquet album. If you miss the good old days of thrash metal, do yourself a favor and buy this cd.

This album is incredible. Very solid metal, I think it is the best metal cd to come out in the past 5 years. Buy it for sure, you will not be dissapointed at all. Five Stars.
