About the Artist
BABYLON A.D. wich consists of original members, Derek Davis vocalist-songwriter, guitarists and music writers Dan De La Rosa & Ron Freschi, Drummer James Pacheco and Bassist Eric Pacheco was formed in 1989. Emerging from shared childhood and rival bands in the suburbs surrounding Oakland California, these five guys quickly took the bay area music scene by storm. Playing over a hundred shows up and down the state of CA, they soon gained a massive following. Armed with a three song demo tape and self produced video, the band caught the attention of Arista Records president and industry music mogul Clive Davis who signed them at a showcase in Los Angeles.
in 1990 BABYLON A.D. released their self titled album which gained critically acclaimed praises from the major rock press magazines world wide. Conjuring up lifes bittersweet realities, their songs were more like cinematic stories that spoke of the all too real sometimes disturbing side of life. This easily separated them from the pouting party rock bands at that time. Their first release produced four singles and three videos with two years non-stop touring in every major city across the U.S. and Canada. The band also spent 35 straight weeks, peeking at #51 in Billboard magazine with three #1 tunes on Concrete Foundations radio play list chart. They also had the lead track and stared in the video promotion of Orion Pictures Robo Cop 2. The fallow up album titled (Nothing Sacred) was released in 1992 and also produced two top ten A.O.R. singles and videos as well as two more years of endless touring. BABYLON A.D. sold over 450,000 units combined in this period as well establis! hing a fanatical fan base.
In 1994 with their growing disillusionment with the business side of music, restrucuring at their lableand the changing climate at MTV and overall music scene in general, the band decided to take a break. A long break!
But now there back! Ready to explode onto the music scene with apocalyptic proportions with the new (Live In Your Face)CD, as well as playing choice concert dates through-out CA, and working on new material soon to be released 1n 1999.

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05
I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!
A Good One!.......2006-11-10
This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24
If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.
Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26
This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.
The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.
There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.
This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.
This is a fun disc to have.
A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03
This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.
Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05
Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2004-02-20
Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.
Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11
This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Too Bad.......2007-04-23
Pretty much, I bought a $13 single. Mine and my husbands song is the bonus track and I didn't know what to expect from the rest of the CD. Wish I could say, I was pleasently surprised but, the rest of the music on the CD is boring. I'd go with a $.99 I-Tunes download instead.
One of the best CDs... period!.......2005-02-13
It's nice to hear real talent again in today's age of manufactured mediocraty. What can I say except Kelly can do it all... sing, write, produce, play in the band... it just pisses me off how dang talented she is! Song for song, this is clearly one of the strongest and memorable CDs I've heard in a long time. "All in Your Head" and "Happy People" are destined to become classics. Take a chance on a real up-and-comer and buy this album!
Great.......2004-01-14
From an old Exposé fan, this album is a grand departure, but Kelly's vocals fit in with this sound perfectly. Buy this and you will not regret adding this to your collection. ...and for fans of 'Days Of Their Lives' there is a little something for you here too...

Just as good as the studio versions........2002-03-15
Babylon A.D. happens to be one of those great hard rock bands that made it around the scene in the early nineties months before grunge took the mainstream by storm. While bands like Slaughter and Firehouse DID succeed fairly well (quite better than Babylon A.D. did, that is for sure), B.A.D. recieved a rather mediocre response by the media and not an awful lot of airplay. The saddest thing about this is that Babylon A.D. was actually a very good band who DIDN'T rely on make-up and neon pink clothes to get where they wanted to go, they relied upon their music. Pure, unadulterated, hard-hitting blues rock. They drew a good deal of inspiration from the likes of AC/DC and Aerosmith (note the cover songs on the live cd) as well as some Led Zeppelin influence. B.A.D.'s first two records (self-titled, 1990 and 'Nothing Sacred, 1992) are, sadly, out-of-print even to this day SINCE the band rejoining a few years back. If you are able to find them, they are worth the money--let me put it to you that way.
As for Babylon's 'Live In Your Face' disc released in '98? If you are a fan of live rock albums with a very solid performance in part by each individual member of the band, then you have come to the right place. I honestly would have to say that the live performance on most of the songs are as good--and sometimes better--than the original studio recordings, I am not kidding you. The song selection and the order in which they were put in was also done quite well. I was happy to find that the two cover songs (AC/DC's "Girl's Got Rhythm" and Aerosmith's "Rats In The Cellar) were placed at the END of the record--not in the front, not in the middle, but at the END. Nice track order. I do have Babylon A.D.'s studio cds as well, and at times it is very hard to distinguish between those and the live versions--they're that good. The production of the live cd is pretty decent and the booklet's cover art and photography is unique. All in all, B.A.D's 'Live In Your Face' cd leaves me with no complaints and only good things to say. If you would like to hear a very good live rock album you haven't yet heard, buy this one. Four and a half stars.
Peace, bros.
