Album Description
28 songs from the soundtracks of the most popular films of the pre-noir and noir genres.
Customer Reviews:
Skip this CD.......2007-02-13
This CD seems to have gone out of its way to trnsfer the worst VHS tapes to CD Audio and package it as classic film scores. The short excerpts are very bad and fade out just as the tempo begins to build. If you love film noir, skip this CD. If you are interested in film noir, skip this CD.
Great soundtracks "from the original films!".......2006-08-06
I feel compelled to respond to some of the negative criticism below. This is not a collection of restored and re-recorded scores by a modern orchestra. These are the original soundtracks from the films themselves. Given that they are in mono and suffer from age, they cannot possibly be judged by the same criteria as a modern recording. BUT, as a collection of noir soundtracks, they are superb. It's a huge list of title tracks from great films noir. And, as many of these are unavailable as restored and re-recorded scores, it is a wonderful disc to have in your collection. If the only scores you like are high-fidelity, however, then this is definitely not for you. But this disc also can't be judged by those sonic standards. For those of you who desire to listen to some of this more obscure film music--just as it would sound playing the video on your TV--then this is a great disc to have.
Good for fans.......2006-01-18
Given that there are very few Film Noir compilation soundtrack cd's available, I'd say this one works just fine for what it is. It's certainly not the most polished work, but it does have a lot of film scores and no fan should be without it. I'm glad I bought it.
It's at today missing for me........2006-01-15
I am waiting this CD in my home. At today it's missing. Take note of this, please.
Not For Audiophiles, But Wonderful for the Rest of Us!.......2006-01-13
I thought that this disc was quite possibly the best attempt so far at cataloging some of the best themes of the film-noir genre. It leaves out the dialogue snippets that break up the feel and mood of the music, and some of the selections are, quite simply, marvelous. Also, the compilers here were brave enough to include some of the rarer and seldom-mentioned noirs for inclusion here. If you're an audiophile, you must realize that these recordings are SIXTY YEARS OLD, for goodness sakes. I'll never understand why some people put so much stake in stereo sound and crystal clear remastering. I happen to feel that the gritty mono (which really isn't nearly as bad as has been suggested) heightens the hardbitten feel of these works. So, if you're someone who enjoys authentic film music, give this a shot! If you're expecting something butchered, repackaged, and changed around for modern tastes, don't bother with this collection!

Van Gogh's Passion and Agony in Music.......2004-03-06
"Lust for Life" is a beautiful musical score composed by Miklos Rozsa. Roza captures to joy and agony that Vincent Van Gogh had in his short but furious life as a great artist. Rozsa uses French Impressionist themes similar to Claude Debussy for Van Gogh's time spent painting and living in France. There are moving brotherly love themes for Vincent and his devoted bother, Theo. There are musical themes that mirror Van Gogh's mental anguish and breakdown, his fueds with fellow artist Paul Gauguin, and his frustration at establishing himself as a great artist, his deep loneliness and failed attempts at friendship and love. This is a very evocative score that conplements the savage brush strokes of Van Gogh's paintings and his great lifeforce that drove him to create one masterpiece after another and music that shows his decent into madness. No small measure that Miklos Rozsa was up to the task of putting Van Gogh's ecstasy and torment into music. One of Rozsa's best scores and should be more widely heard. Highly recommended aside from his composing for immense epics. Van Gogh's story is well told in musical terms by Rozsa.

A little more on Sonny.......2007-06-14
Sonny Sharrock is the cousin of bandleader Richard Daniel, which is how he became involved with the project.
Brute Force is one of the best bands of its era, and I'm delighted to find this available on CD.
Stan Strickland has gone on to become a music legend in Boston.
Brute Force - At Last!.......2007-04-17
I've been searching for this on CD for years. I lived in Yellow Springs, Ohio (home of Antioch College - no,I wasn't a student) in the late 1960's and saw Brute Force in concert several times. They were mainly Dayton and Springfield, Ohio musicians - with Stan Strickland, the reed man as the driving force. Afro-jazz of the sort Alice Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders were doing at the time. Beautiful, magical music. The second side is more conventional, kind of funk. Sonny Sharock is a great addition, but that was laid on in the studio. To my knowledge, he never performed with the group. They opened in Cincinnati for Herbie Mann on his Memphis Underground tour and blew him away. Unhappily, after finally getting on with, I believe it was Atlantic, they soon broke up. Lost my LP long ago and I'm thrilled to finally have the CD.
For Sonny Sharrock Fans.......2004-09-29
This is pretty amazing. Some fairly interesting Funk-Jazz from the late sixties. The jazz elements are cleary influenced by the New Thing players like Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders et al. What makes it special is that the guitar player listed as playing on three tracks is none other than the great Sonny Sharrock. The greatest guitarist of the era for my money, and there still, after all of these years, is not enough of him on disc for my tastes. To add to the delight, his playing is all over this record and not just on the three listed tracks. One of the great things about Sonny, there was no imitation, you will recognize his voice right away. If you too need more Sonny, grab this disc fast before it goes out of print.
Another Lost Gem.......2004-08-09
This is a very misleading name for this band. The first time somene tells you about Brute Force you automatically think "Heavy Metal". But, when you see the cover of the CD you are quite puzzled and you can't help the temptation in buying it. This is a soul & funk band from the late 60's. Not to be confused with another 70's and 80's band of the same name. This group of six guys know how to jam and they definitely have the funk in them as well. This CD is a mix of vocal and instrumental tracks and is very heavy on horns. It starts off with a bang with "Do It Right Now". The lead singer sort of has a Jimi Hendrix sound to him. I'm sure he was an influence. If you like the obscure and "hard to find recently remastered" soul & funk then you definitely gotta give these guys a try.

a unique artist in a world of blandness.......2004-08-14
Brute Force is a psychedelic tin pan alley song writer. Not sure if he would agree with me on that one, but I do think his writing is wonderful.
The main part of this cd is a live recording of Brute performing at the piano. He is is fine voice and he improvs some funny stuff.
This is not for everybody. Fans of Allen Sherman and Henny Youngman might be happy here.

Imitation of the Stooges.......2000-08-18
Back in the late 60's, an Apple band called "Brute Force" recorded an obscure single, "King of Fuh." This single was Apple's (i.e., the Beatles') way of playing games with the censor. The sweet, melodic opening lines of the song: ". . . There was a land called fuh. . . and in this land there was a king, and everyone called him the fuh. . . " I think you know where we are going here. Needless to say, this single was banned -- for obvious reasons.
When I saw this CD, I thought it was going to be much like the soft, pop rock of "Apple's Brute Force." I was wrong. Instead, this Brute Force is more like the orginal Stooges of the late 60's. Make no mistake about it, this is heavy metalic punk rock -- loud screaming vocals, heavy guitar with feedback, and angry drum beats.
I rated this three stars because of the absence of originality. Face it, we've heard this kind of sound before -- from people like Iggy and the Stooges, the Monks, and the Sex Pistols. Additionally, the aforementioned bands were much better at playing this kind of music.
