Congo-born, Los Angeles-based singer-composer-bandleader Lemvo has been mixing the guitar-driven form of rumba he heard growing up in his homeland's capital city of Kinshasa, with its Cuban forebears--five-centuries-worth of Spanish melodies mixed with African rhythms--for a very long time. For his fifth album, which is named for his newborn daughter, he has wisely concluded that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The result is a deliriously joyous batch of bold-and-brassy, accordion-laced, percussive, sinfully melodic hip-swingers sung in several languages, but not only in the expected Congolese Lingala dialect, French and Spanish. For example, "Serenata Angolana," with sultry second lead vocals by Cape Verdean star Maria De Barros, is interpreted in Portuguese as a tribute to Lemvo's Angolese grandfather. But "Elebette," while transformed into a slinky bolero, is performed in the original Turkish. If "Malambo," written by the late, great Franco Luambo, and Tino Baroza's '50s-vintage "Lollobigida" constitute a return to the old nabe, "Mentirosa," with its gently propulsive charanga violins and flute, is more redolent of Havana by moonlight. Among the talent on hand, stand-outs include legends like guitarists Papa Noel, Bopol and Huit Kilos, singers Nyboma and Wuta Mayi, and bassist Miguel Yamba, but this is to name only a few. Fans of Africando and Kékélé should definitely snap this one up. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful music to my ears............2007-06-24
I had heard bits and pieces of Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca in the past, but I had never really taken the time to listen to and appreciate their distinctive style(s) and the authentic touch they give to African salsa (Lemvo is from Democratic Republic of the Congo) as well as the other genres they play (boogaloo, son, kizomba, rumba, and bolero, among others). Their style is reminiscent of Africando, another wonderful band made up of a cross-section of very diverse musicians (from Mali and Cuba, just to name a couple of countries). The songs on this album are in Spanish, Lingala, Kikongo, Swahili, Portuguese, and Turkish [yes, I said Turkish]. Never have so many languages and types of music (and rhythms) melded so beautifully together.
Though, I was really a great fan of salsa music, and enjoyed learning about different styles, that isn't the limit of my musical scope and interest. This album starts out with the style of boogaloo, with "Kasongo Boogaloo." It's peppy and is modelled after the boogaloo music that originated in the Nuyoriquen (New York Puerto Rican) communities. Yet, it sounds different. What makes it so distinctive? Lemvo mixes the languages of Spanish and Lingala together, and the percussion sounds more rootbound to the African origins of Latin music styles we have come to know today. It has a great, earthy and organic feel. I also highly reccomend the beautiful boleros and heavenly ballad featured on the album ("Habari Yako," "Elbette," and "Serenata Angolana"). This album is gorgeous, people. If you haven't heard of Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca up until now, you will be a convert to their musical repertoire after listening to these beautiful songs.

This CD is one of the best from the Willie Colón/Hector Lavoe duo.

A classic salsa album.......2006-08-03
Only some simple words: if you like salsa and don't have it, you don't know about salsa, if you have it and don't like it, don't try salsa any more: This is one of the classical and great salsa album.

Take a spicy Cajun tour through Louisiana's bayou country on Choo Choo Boogaloo! The musical scenery includes foot-stompin', two-steppin,' finger poppin' zydeco emblazoned with hot guitar licks, sassy accordion, and a dash of blues thrown in for good measure. Traditional titles, including "Get on Board," "Iko Iko," "Little Red Caboose," and "Cotton Fields," have been well adapted to zydeco style, while "Crawfish Song," "Mardi Gras Mambo," and "Give Me a Squeeze, Please" are right at home in this celebration of Cajun culture. Children will have a wonderful time moving with the new rhythms and exploring the sounds of various instruments used to create the unique zydeco style. --Deborah Moore

Fun! Fun! Fun!.......2007-07-01
We love this CD. It has old favorites and new favorites. It's hard not to tap your feet and sing along!
We love this CD!.......2007-04-04
I saw Buckwheat Zydeco live at a summer festival and they were a blast! I was even more excited to find out they have a children's CD out! My son is two and just adores the music on the CD. It's fun to dance to and easy to sing along with. I love the cajun twist on old classics and I think it's a really cool way to introduce a different culture into my son's life. Plus, it's a well appreciated break from the sappy, sugary children's music that tends to be out there!
Zydeco nostalgia.......2006-04-08
I'm from Louisiana and can validate that Buckwheat is an authentic, well-known zydeco musician. He does not normally play children's music, so I was pleased to learn of this CD. I, as the parent, enjoy zydeco, and therefore enjoy this CD, which is fun and appropriate for children. My son loves it. I am pleased that he will grow up knowing the same songs that I sang as a child, and be familiar with rich Louisiana roots music. The Crawfish and Cotton Fields songs are especially nostalgic. They were my favorites growing up.
Product arrived on time and with no damages.
Too much hype.......2006-01-10
After reading the reviews for this, I was soo excited to receive the cd. While I liked the idea of having narration introducing children to the music and the different instruments, I found the recordings themselves to be surprisingly flat. Where's the fun and excitement?? This is zydeco! This is zydeco for CHILDREN! The music and vocals didn't come from the heart, I felt no life in the recording. Even the Sesame Street zydeco song was better than this. My class (2 1/2 to 5 y/o) was not dancing around the room to it, either.
AI-EEEEEE!.......2005-11-15
Absolutly my children's all-time favorite CD for the car! Children under three may be a bit young to appreciate it, but once they get to "sing-a-long" age they'll be hooked. My kids were three and five when we got it, and that was just about right. Though now getting to the "cool" ages of 10 and 12, they still pull this one out occasionally. The theme of the album is a musical journey through buyou country, MC'ed by the conductor of the "Zydeco Express." Between tracks he talks about the music and the songs. Some reviewers have felt that their children didn't like or appreciate this part, but I believe they soak in more of it than we realize, as evidenced by my kids' recall of some of details years later. It's a great introduction to a fun genre of music.

Ever since Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría arrived in the United States from Cuba in the late 1940s and hooked up with bebop legend Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, and Pérez Prado, he's been the most imitated conga drummer in Latin jazz and salsa music. Further, his pioneering flute-violin charanga bands have almost singly expanded the parameters of Latin sounds in America.
These 1960s Columbia Records sides contain his coveted hip-shaking pop covers with flutist Hubert Laws, master santero Julito Collazo, drummer Bernard Purdie, and trumpeter Marty Sheller, with Santamaría and company conjuring up fun and campy red-beans-and-rice versions of Top 40 soul classics. Santamaría lays the boogaloo down on James Brown's "Cold Sweat," the Temptations' "Cloud Nine," Ritchie Valens's "La Bamba" and Booker T. and the MG's' hit, "Green Onions." But make no mistake, Mongo Santamaría was no novelty act. His rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" and his own composition, the 6/8 syncopated standard, "Afro Blue"--recorded by legions of musicians, including John Coltrane, and captured live on this compilation--best showcases his thunderous and articulate polyrhythmic genius linking Africa and the Americas. --Eugene Holley Jr.

WE GOT LATIN SOUL !.......2006-06-17
Mongo Santamaria was one of the best latin jazz artists of his time. Rest in salsa heaven !!
Take this release for what it is!.......2004-03-05
1960's: Early corporate controlled commercial "Latin-Jazz." Read the liner notes. Mongo did it for the opportunity Columbia offered him and for the bread! He was making a living doing what he loved, can't really bust his chops for that. But he was/is a talent and his band had a sound. Okay it's commercial... but so was just about everything else on the radio in the 60's. Think about it... 60's radio, Beatles, Honky Tonk, Commercial Jazz -- the 70's had some alternative/progressive stuff going on early, but then the suits took over... 80's commercialism, 90's commercialism... here we are 21st century... what have we got? 60's radio... commercial, "smooth jazz"... maybe Mongo was the smooth jazz of the 60's... wait, wasn't that the West Coast Jazz scene? Mongo is early Latin Jazz. Earth, Wind and Fire, Santana, Mandrill were all inspired by it. If you're into a heavy jazz experience... this ain't it brother and sisters. But it's ALL good!
Pink 'Palm Beach'.......2003-10-31
The last cut, the exquisite 'Afro Blue' is worth the price of the CD or, at least, that is what I am telling myself now that I own it. 'Watermelon Man' adds the other star for nostalgia's sake and 'Chili Beans' is admittedly funky. What remains though is a strange excursion into commercial bugaloo and R&B - think 'Austin Powers' meets 'Beach Blanket Bingo' - actually painful to listen to. It must have been a case of an artist (get 'Afro Roots' or 'Sabroso') providing what his producers and market demanded. Danceability? If you're throwing a 'Retro-Retro 60's' party, this is the CD for it; bring your pink 'Palm Beach' sport coat and your madras shorts.
A Man Called Mongo........2003-05-22
During his long and extensive career, Mongo Santamaria fused sensual Cuban rhythms with r&b and jazz, making him one of the most revered musicians of our time. This hits collection compiles sixteen of the percussionist's most essential recordings, and they all have "class" written all over them. Covering material from the mid to late 1960s, the music here conjures up images of a hot July beach party, tequilas and all. He admirably covers the Otis Redding classic "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay"--years before Michael Bolton had the chance to butcher it. There's also the groovy sax-flavored "Twenty Five Miles," the breezy "Fat Back," and "Cold Sweat." But this disc saves the best for last with the closing track, a 10 minute live recording of "Afro Blue." If you want to bear witness to the depth of Mongo's talent, then hear this jam, which is a memorable mix of Cuban percussion and traditional jazz. Thanks to the perfect harmony in which the band performs, "Afro Blue" is a brilliant piece of work that gets under your skin and stubbornly stays there. To be honest, I was introduced to Santamaria through my Dad, who was a huge fan of not only jazz, but particularly Latin-flavored jazz. When I learned of Mongo's passing, I revisited his work and decided to pick up this disc, which instantly gave me childhood memories. But even more important than that, this hits collection is a great survey that loudly answers the question, "What was so great about Mongo Santamaria?" The answer lies in this CD.

Pretty good!!.......2006-07-28
Sounds great and very well put together. But, If you don't like the live concert sound with audience background noise this cd is not for you.
Ahhh, real salsa, the kind you rarely hear anymore!.......2006-02-24
Every single artist on this CD wears a crown for his/her craft! The days when you could (without fear) stand and dance to the music at the Fania All Stars at Madison Square Garden are gone...but the legacy will never fade. This CD envelops the hearer with the sound of every instrument played and the ballads bathe your ears like a warm waterfall. A must-have for every latino who truly appreciates his/her culture! Pass it on to the next generation.....
Salsa Artistes At Play.......2006-02-03
Live performances that should please both salsa and jazz fans. The Artistes are evidently having a good time playing with and to the audience, judging by the amount of applause generated at appropriate moments. It all makes you wish that you had been there in Madison Square Garden.
The downside to this collection is that you can't really mix the applause out, so I'm going to save this gem to enjoy in the comfort of my own home.
Good album, but sounds a little off.......2004-06-25
I'd give it 4 stars but the introduction tracks are annoying and the "live" sound sounds fake to me. The crowd feels artificial, the recordings sound almost studio like, and the segways don't sound right.
If you can get past that, the music is great.
A fantastic album.......2004-01-16
Put this on when you want to dance!

Awesome Salsa selections!!.......2006-07-27
This is a good choice for me because the song selections are very uptempo and not the usually repetitive salsa beats!! I would recommend this CD to people who like to dance and for those who also appreciate good vocals!!
Hot Salsa!.......2005-10-15
Man! This CD takes me back. Tons of great songs on it from when I was first learning to Salsa. Good times. Good music. Worth every penny!
Good mix.......2005-08-10
I grew up listening to this music. Is a good variety and the sound quality is good too. I'll recommend it to anyone who wants to have a good salsa selection from the 90's.
A very decent Salsa CD.......2004-12-01
I have this and many people have borrowed it from me. I especially like the 1st song. There are some songs that don't appeal to me that much, which is why I give it a 4 star instead of 5, but overall, an excellent album.
An Excellent dance compilation.......2004-02-02
I have a love of dancing mambo, this is one of the best compilations around for dance music for salsa and mambo used in dance competitions all over....I reccomend it, I have not gotten tired of it for the 6 years I have owned it.

One of FIF's Most Powerful Albums.......2006-06-03
Although I am not a Christian, I am still able to enjoy FIF's music, which is incredibly unique. On this album they have left their straight ska sound behind, and have gone down a more neo-New Wave path, a la Fountains of Wayne with horns.
In response to one reviewer who called "The Day We Killed" the equivalent of "musical Spam": you missed the entire point of the song! The vocals utilized in this song are screams because of the deep anguish the band feels for what the United States has done and continues to do to Native Americans; they are the only sort of vocals which fit this song. Crazy Horse was a Dakota chief killed by the U.S. Army, and in the song is utilized also as a metaphor for the various Native American people's. The song is certainly not about "American Indians" named Crazy Horse, and no, he didn't get beat up at school, but was murdered by the U.S. Army, as were hundreds of thousands of Native Americans. This is actually one of the best FIF songs, in my opinion.
Very Good.......2006-03-19
Five Iron never fails to deliver. It took me awhile to get into it, because I was used to hearing some of the songs on their live cds.
But, that said:
There are really powerful songs on this cd, along with some goofy ones. FIF's unique style is as pleasing as always. I couldn't give it 5 stars because there's no hidden tracks -- come on, that's half the fun, getting extras! Though if you look at it from a different angle, no hidden tracks mean that you can put the songs onto a playlist without minutes of empty space.
Over all, FIF gets my applause.
So very Powerful!.......2006-02-15
If you like Five Iron Frenzy, or ska music, or Rock music, you cannot dislike this CD! This is quite possibly FIF's hardest hitting, most powerful CD to date. Though, I cannot say it is better than the others, they have all captivated me in a way no other ban has come close to doing. This band is, in my opinion, the best our gerenation has yet seen! Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
It will dominate your life.......2005-03-04
I am the proud owner of three FIF cds (Newest album, End is Near, Boogaloo) and this one dominates them all. Listeners beware, though: these songs will get stuck in your head like bubble gum in your hair. They will be running through you brain all day so loud that people sitting next to you will probably hear them too.
Pre-ex-girlfriend is possibly one of the best and funniest songs I have ever heard. The blasting brass (and saxophone) will have you jumping around in your room so much you'll probably be decapitated by the ceiling fan. If you're having one of those days where everything goes wrong (your dog dies, you lose your job, a madman abducts your children, you're shot three times in the abdomen), listen to song number 8, Plan B. The rhythms are quite cheerful. Track 11, Car, will, if you are listening to it in your car, probably cause you to plummet over a cliff because excessive head banging will impair your driving.
In this day and age when people will buy an album for one good song while all the others sound like the musical equivalent of Spam, you can rest assured that on this cd there are only to bad songs. Case 1: The Day We Killed. The dragging, ear-splitting sounds coupled with lyrics that are about American Indians named "Crazy Horse" (I bet he got beat up by all the other kids at school) make this song easily skippable. Case 2: Eulogy. This song lacks compelling beat. It is deeply poetic and, as a result, hard to decipher. Plus, the tempo is as slow as a one-legged race-horse. But please, do not let this defer you.
Whether or not you are considering buying Electric Boogaloo, you should purchase it. CDs like this do not come out every day. Just be sure not to listen to it in the car.
When you want to rock . . ........2004-11-10
An Atlanta band called Loudflower released an album in 1997 entitled "Happy Now?" Their label, Gray Dot Records (Third Day), hoped to cash in on the ska-core craze by signing a band with a knack for writing emotive rock and roll backed by a horn section. No ska rhythms, no rockabilly, no new wave comparisons. Just straight-ahead rock in the Americana realm with some horns in the background, just enough to emphasize melody and structure.

Five Iron Frenzy has never been one to follow a trend. If, as a serious musician, you didn't read any reviews and delayed in purcahsing "Electric Boogaloo" because you thought it might be as annoying as some of the tracks on "All the Hype that Money Can Buy", join the club. If you also feel stupid for having waited so long to buy it, your feelings of self-deprication are understandable. FIF pushed through with a blistering rock album that emotes without being overly emotive, ponders without being self-important, and satisfies the harder rock yearnings of its base of fans.

I'm not going to give a blow-by-blow of each song. Suffice it to say that this is one of the stronger, tighter records of FIF's career, second only to their magnum opus "The End is Near". The band understands that for one to rock and still sound viable, one must rock steady if they are to rock at all. The dual-guitar techniques of playing alternate lead riffs opposite the other is still in place here, although the arrangements are somewhat more intricate. The horn arrangements threaten to knock the wind out of you, but don't become annoying or overpowering. Unfortunately, unlike Loudflower's knack for making the horn arrangements part of the structure of each song, FIF's horns seem to be more along the lines of countermelodies, filling space left by sustained vocals and spacious chord progressions.

Since everything here is pretty much full volume, there's not really much room for the band to move around. It's all in your face, hypoglycemic, ADHD-injected music, and it may be best to take it in small bites rather than swallowing everything whole. Add to the that first four songs sound a little tiresome if you listen to them back to back, as vocalist Reese Roper's vocals are set within the same high range for a significant amount of time. While effective in the songs themselves, combining all of them together can grate on the unassuming ear. Probably the biggest reason why I'm rating this 4 stars instead of 5.

Otherwise, a major kick-butt album. Buy it now before Christ returns and it's too late.

Best Allstar CD.......2007-03-24
A roomate turned me on to these guys about 10 years ago with this CD and I have seen and heard most of their stuff since because of this CD. Fred Wesley is the most amazing trombone player and I was blessed to have seen him back then with the Allstars at the Fox Theater in Boulder. He's a powerhouse on stage. Karl is just one of the most all encompassing players out there. He's not a showboat, but just plays from his heart. So very, very talented. The other guys are pretty talented too. Which is so fresh in this day and age with all the silly fluff out in the music scene. This is a must have for anyone who loves funk, R&B and jazz. Nothing fancy.....just funky and fun to the core. You'll feel it in your soul.
Groovey.......2007-03-12
Very "Grant Green" in the sound and grooves. Somewhat light, not overly driving funky, but definately great listening. My only dislike is that the quality of the recording is lower then expected, the overall volume of the disc is quite lower than comparable CD's. Other than that I would recommend!
Truly Greatness.... but best ever??.......2006-08-18
Karl D and the Greyboys are the real deal, its jazz-funk fusion with a fresh twist. However, lets not get carried away here. While it is most likely the best album of its kind in recent years, it is in no way the greatest funk, or jazz funk album EVER.
Notice on the cover, it says "with Fred Wesley." Now I know that not everybody knows who Fred Wesley is, so Ill tell yall a little secret. Pick up "The JBs - Pass the Peas," listen to Fred take it higher, then lets talk about the "BEST FUNK EVER" The Greyboys do it right, but they are standing on the shoulders of giants, and one of the biggest graces actually graces this album. It is truly greatness, just not the greatest ever.
best funk album of all time.......2006-07-26
Absolutely changed my life. For Three years I listened to this CD at least once a week, if not more. Just perfect in every way imaginable.
Good but not great.......2005-11-03
I liked the tracks fine, but I have heard better. this was a first time purchase for me. I think that I was pleased enough to explore their other albums.

The title of this CD is mildly misleading as this collection is not strictly homegrown Latin in its focus. There are also tracks by Manzanita, a Spanish Roma (Gypsy) player famous for his rumba flamenca (this is what the Gipsy Kings play); Kaoma (a group famous--or infamous--for its high-profile participation in the lambada craze); and Ricardo Lemvo, a Congolese star with an Afro-Cuban style redolent of Kinshasa during the 1960s. That being said, it is unlikely that these 10 tracks will disappoint anyone. It's prime stuff, ranging from Colombia's Toto La Momposina to Oscar de Leon from Venezuela, to the Bay Area's own Conjunto Céspedes. Latin music is a complicated subject and many would-be listeners are too intimidated to try it. This album was compiled by a fan, rather than a pundit, with a naive enthusiasm that's certain to help beginners feel relaxed enough for further explorations. --Christina Roden

Great Compilation of Upbeat Latin Music.......2007-07-04
You can't go wrong with this album: an international compilation of Latin/Salsa dance and pop music. Every track is great. The $1.00 current used priced tag is unbelievable! Get it!
Latino, Latino.......2006-02-23
I actually heard this CD at a Training seminar before I actually bought it. The music is terrific.
Latino all the way!.......2005-08-19
A great compilation of music from the roots of Africa, Cuba and Latin America interpreting the Cuban son better known today as "Salsa", other musicians from Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela are here too with their traditional rhythms that have been incorporated in the Afro-Cuban sounds. My favorite is a duo "Besame Mama" with Poncho Sanchez (a Chicano from California) and my favorite the king conga player, (Cuban born) Mongo Santamaria. This CD is very good for all Latinos in general.
EXCELLENT LATINO BY PUTUMAYO.......2005-07-13
Anything buy Putumayo is great. This is nothing different--great latino vibes for any party, morning errand or dinner mix.
A great cd.......2001-11-26
This is an album that is sure to lift your spirits. Full of great Latin dance beats, from artists from Cuba, Spain, South America and even Zaire. A great selection and variety, from Salsa and Rumba to Son. The booklet is also very informative, with a piece about each artist and the song. Highly recommended.
