5 out of 5 stars Takes you into the Holy of Holies.......2006-04-22

I am a praise dancer that usually dances/listens to Gospel music, but upon encountering this CD I realize that I have never heard/danced (to) music that has taken me so close into the presence of the Father. I had this cd years ago and played it until the CD broke. I am so glad to be able to have it again, and pray that you will buy it and listen to it. It truly takes you into the Shekinah Glory, and is allows an experience in worship that is like no other..

Des louanges grandioses pour adorer le Seigneur tout puissant.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Inspirational Music ! Get The Video Too !!!.......2003-05-07

I have listened to a lot of Gospel/Christian music of late, some of which has been quite inspirational. However, I can honestly say that this CD by Paul Wilbur is by far the best Christian music that I have come across.

The lyrics, music and atmosphere purveyed during the production are absolutely incredible. Performed live in Jerualem, Israel, this has to be a must-hear for every Christian. Seldom has such music been so moving.

The adoration for the Lord Jesus through the music and lyrics is extremely personal and intimate and is like balm to the soul.

The lyrics are so deep and meaningful and the music is pure worship. The singer appears to be lost in worship and adoration for the Lord, not to mention the Choir and even the audience themselves !

I really am lost for words as how to describe the sheer majesty and praise emanating from this work ! If I could only recommend one Christian CD, then this would be the one. Highly recommended.

There is also a VHS video available of the actual live recording of this event in Jerusalem. It is incredible ! The praise and worship will blow your mind. One of the most amazing spectacles of Christian music that I have ever seen.

Paul Wilbur's other CD's "Shalom Jerusalem", "Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem" and "Lion Of Judah" are all highly recommended too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my opinion.......2007-08-01

This recording was reccomended somewhere as being even better than the newer version with Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming - it really is tops, I think. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is as lyrical as ever. And the other soloists are also breathtaking.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

5 out of 5 stars Continuing Their Tradition of Great Worship CD's.......2005-03-11

This is trio Phillips, Craig, & Dean's third worship CD. I love their first two, and was quite eager to get this one. I wasn't disappointed.

Unlike the first two, this one only had two songs I was familiar with. The "In Christ Alone" medley takes the recent praise chorus and combines it with the chorus to the song of the same name made famous by Michael English. I was surprised to learn that Shawn Craig had written the song before the group formed. The other song is "Wonderful Merciful Savior." I've recently learned this great chorus, and their version of it is outstanding.

As with previous projects, the guys contribute a couple songs of their own. "Because I'm Forgiven" focuses on the reason we praise God. "Be the Praise of My Heart" recognizes that true worship comes from every action of our lives and not just the songs we sing. "Awake My Soul" is a prayer to be surrendered to God and become more like Him. Finally, "Mighty is the Power of the Cross" reflects on what was done for us on the cross.

The rest of the songs are great as well. The CD opens with "Friend of God," a joyful song about the mind-blowing idea that the God of the universe calls us friend. I actually heard "You are God Alone" on the radio before I got the CD and couldn't wait to get my own copy.

Every song on this CD focuses praise on God for all He's done for us and who He is. Music doesn't get much better then this.

5 out of 5 stars Impeccable English Style.......2007-07-13

If you favor blend, balance, pitch, and all the other parameters of the English traditional choral style, you'll be very impressed with the Tallis Scholars' refined presentation. the music speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud.......2006-07-27

In the last couple of years, the Tallis Scholars have been compiling their sizeable recording output into attractive two-disc editions. Here, they've collected a large number of their interpretations of their namesake, Thomas Tallis. Tallis (c. 1505-1585) is, of course, one of the giants of Renaissance music, and he was certainly the greatest English composer of liturgical music between John Dunstable and William Byrd. I personally consider him the second-greatest Renaissance composer after Palestrina, but I'm not dogmatic about it. I love the music of Josquin, Victoria, and Byrd almost as much. Let's just say that, if you're interested in immersing yourself in the work of a single Renaissance composer, you can't do much better than Tallis.

These recordings were made 1985-1998, and they all sound great. Included in this collection are most of Tallis best and best-known works: the two Lamentations of Jeremiah, O Sacrum Convivium, Gaude Gloriosa, Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter (which contains the theme that inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams' famous Fantasia), and the incredible 40-part motet Spem In Alium (which is one of the supreme masterpieces of the 16th century). Unfortunately, there are some notable absences, such as the Tallis Scholars' own recording of O Nata Lux. The Mass for 4 Voices, certainly one of Tallis' major works, is also nowhere to be found. Of course, there's only so much music that will fit onto two CDs, but it's still a shame that they couldn't fit at least one of Tallis' masses. Nevertheless, the music that's here is beautiful and powerful.

The Tallis Scholars themselves need no introduction. They're one of the most famous groups specializing in Renaissance music. It needs to be said, however, that if you're looking for "authentic" recordings (that is, recordings that approximate what the music originally sounded like in the 16th century), you might want to look elsewhere. The Tallis Scholars use female singers instead of boys or (ahem!) castrati (though it's doubtful that Tallis would have used or written for castrati himself). And one could complain that these recordings use too many singers for some of the smaller pieces or that the sopranos overpower some of the larger ones (like Spem In Alium). I'm neither an enthusiast nor an opponent of the authentic-performance movement; since we're listening to recorded music anyway, these issues strike me as moot. The Tallis Scholars are experienced and accomplished singers, and they achieve their primary goal: to provide superlative-sounding recordings of important early choral compositions. If you're looking for a fine compilation of Tallis' music or an excellent introduction to Renaissance music, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars Original is the best........2007-04-10

This is the original recording of the '60s Swingle Singers. It focuses on Bach and provides entertaining and intricate renditions of his works. I recently saw the New Swingle Singers, who were very good, but they are diverging into jazz and often sound like Manhattan Transfer. Their newer CDs all begin to sound alike. I prefer the original artistry.

5 out of 5 stars Swinging Bach.......2005-12-30

When the Swingle Singers take on Bach's polyphony at full speed, it's exhilarating. Very cleanly done, very fun, and the jazz drums and bass add nicely to the sound.
Like many people, I have a soft spot for this group because my parents listened to them. (Next time your favorite retro-hipster starts in, pop this disk in, followed by a little Switched-On Bach, and let the love/hate debate begin.)
I could have done without a few of the slow Bach chestnuts featured here (maybe the "Wachet Auf" wasn't overdone in 1963), but the strong numbers, such as the mini-epic "Sinfonia", with a great soprano solo, carry the album to a higher plane. The drummer overplays in a few spots, but overall this record just plain works.
Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I've been looking for this for a LONG time..........2005-06-19

I loved listening to this with my Dad in the 60's and 70's and had always wanted a "clean" copy of my own. I have the original LP, but the pops and hisses now mar the recording and let's face it, a CD is a lot easier to listen to. This is NOT the title or album cover of the LP issued in the US, but IS the same recording as the "Bach's Greatest Hits" LP released here in 1963 (or 1964) with the white album cover and grey line drawings of Bach et al. It is just as I remebered it. What a nice memory.

It was in Paris, France, probably on June 8th 1964. For the first time four ladies and four mans on stage in Cite Universite as vocal group Les >Swingle Singers. They open his first public appearance with Fugue in D Minor. Thirty seven years later I am seeing very clear those shine faces of artists, joyful that his project vocalize J. B. Bach is a true. I am hearing now one of the best singers in Europe, not only at that time, Christiane Legrand (sister of famous composer, conductor, piano player an even excellent singer M. Legrand). Hers voice in Aria is simply fantastic. I have the chance to hear this group on his second concert in Paris, several months later. This was also an excellent concert, but without unforgettable fire of the first one. I have 12 LP of this group even this performed by the group called Swingle II. If you hear the CD Jazz Sebastian Bach you would understand what told ones Charlie Parker. J. S. Bach is the greatest composer in the history of mankind. You would understand one other miracle, why last year Bobby McFerrin were able to improvise on Bach and at the same time the public on the square in Dresden sings Gounod's Ave Maria. > Igor Catic, Zagreb Croatia From time to time jazz presenter on Croatian broadcasting systems.

This was the Tallis Scholars' first recording devoted to their namesake composer--and it remains one of the best Tallis discs available. Its centerpiece is the famous Spem in alium for eight five-voice choirs. This is a spectacular piece, with voices entering one by one, leading to a sudden, crashing entry for all eight choirs. The choirs then toss pealing phrases back and forth (listen with headphones!) and finish with a monumental 40-voice chord.

Other treats include the popular Pentecost motet Loquebantur variis linguis, two beautiful settings of the prayer Salvator mundi, and the 20-minute votive antiphon Gaude gloriosa, which has intricate imitative passages for three to four soloists alternating with vigorous writing for full choir. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Superlative Performance of Spem in Alium.......2006-02-15

I had generally avoided this musical period, and had been ignorant of Thomas Tallis until hearing the version of Spem in Alium on the Kronos Quartet's disc Black Angels. Curiosity compelled me to seek out this performance, incomparably superior to the other:

A lone soprano voice seems to float, weightless, on a sea composed of the other singers' voices. Although we have no way of knowing how the composer intended the piece to sound (the liner notes reveal that even Tallis' reason for composing Spem in Alium is unknown), its success may be judged on the merits of the present performance. From that standpoint, it is a perfect blend of explosive power and unspeakable beauty, in its pure expression perhaps unequaled by anything that followed. Hearing it is a soul-expanding experience, as it must have been for its listeners half a millennium ago.

2 out of 5 stars totally unbalanced.......2005-01-18

The sopranos aggressively dominate the sound (-2 stars) and the Spem is awashed in vowels (-1 star). Did you know there are 24 tenor and bass parts vs 8 soprano parts? You certainly can't tell from this recording. This can only be recommended to those with no interest in hearing anything aside from the soprano melody with maybe some backup support from the alto and background noise from the male voices. Also the Spem is recorded with the singers in a straight line ... a less than ideal position.

A previous reviewer mentioned the Obrecht Missa Maria Zart recording ... again an amazingly beautiful piece, the sound of the recording is rich and resonant but then the sopranos start singing and ruin the mood.

5 out of 5 stars Musical splendour..........2004-06-05

--Thomas Tallis-
Thomas Tallis, born in 1505, was one of the outstanding liturgical composers of his day, being the acknowledged master of the composers of England from the time of Queen Mary's reign forward. He was a composer and Gentleman of the Chapel Royal during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth, and worked closely with many other composers, most particularly William Byrd. He was an organist in addition to composer. He died in 1585, having navigated his way through the tumultuous catholic/protestant difficulties of the church which provided his livelihood and creative outlet.

--Spem in alium--
This piece, Spem in alium numquam habui (I have no faith in any other [than God]), is Tallis' most famous piece. It is a 40-part motet, set up for eight five-part choirs. It is a masterpiece. Tallis blended the chordal with the polyphonic here, to great effect. The number of voices makes for interesting effects, particularly when done in cathedral settings. Several stories have appeared about why this work was composed, but in the end, it remains unknown.

--Other music--
Other pieces included on this disc include Tallis' Sancte Deus, one of his early works, done during the reign of Henry VIII, and two settings of Salvator mundi, salva nos. These are rather smaller pieces, particularly in comparison with Spem in alium. Gaude gloriosa is more in keeping with Spem in alium, in terms of length and phrasing. The Miserere is a seven-part technical masterpiece very close in form to traditional English canonical settings. The final piece, Loquebantur variis linguis, is a seven-voice chant.

--Liner Notes--
Being internationally acclaimed, the Tallis Scholars' CDs typically present their commentary and texts in English, French, German and Italian (together with any Latin texts); that is true of this disc. The cover art also typically represents visual arts contemporary with the compositions - here it is a piece from the Munich collection of Alte Pinakothek by Albrecht Durer in 1500, roughly contemporary with Tallis.

--The Tallis Scholars--
The Tallis Scholars, a favourite group of mine since the first time I heard them decades ago, are a group dedicated to the performance and preservation of the best of this type of music. A choral group of exceptional ability, I have been privileged to see them many times in public, and at almost every performance, their singing seems almost like a spiritual epiphany for me, one that defies explanation in words. Directed by Peter Phillips, the group consists of a small number of male and female singers who have trained themselves well to their task.

Their recordings are of a consistent quality that deserve more than five stars; this particular disc of pieces by Thomas Tallis, the namesake of the group, deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who loves choral music, liturgical music or Gregorian chant, classical music generally, or religious music. It is remarkable, both in composition and performance. The original recording was made in 1985.

Spem in Alium is just amazing!
I'm a big fan of choral music but had not really got my head around exactly how complex it could get.
Until I heard this one.

I am a heavy metal "music" fan, with at times,a bit of rock, pop and soul entering the cd player/put on the venerable lp machine. My forays into classical are about as frequent as the proverbial rocking horse poo. However, this disc is the one I probably play most often. Why?Because it's beauty is unsurpassed. It is the only piece of music that has brought a tear to my eye.As someone above wrote, crank it up when the kids/breadknife/hubby are out of the house and you will be treated to sonic joy.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Album Description

Produced by the composer himself, this is the first recording of the original ensemble version of John Rutter's radiant Requiem. Written in 1985, the work is not a conventional setting of the Requiem Mass but comprises a personal selection of texts from the Catholic liturgy and the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. John Rutter maintains intimate ties with Clare College and many of his anthems are left as a musical legacy to the college. Among these are two simple, tender Blessings: Go forth into the world in peace, dedicated to the choir on the eve of its first tour to America; and A Clare Benediction, written as a gift to Rutter's alma mater. This recording is dedicated to the memory of Christopher Rutter.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best copy of Rutter's Requiem!.......2007-06-27

In my opinion, this copy of Rutter's Requiem is the best one available. The orchestra does not overpower the chorus. The soprano soloist, Elin Manahan Thomas, is sublime.

5 out of 5 stars Requiem.......2006-07-07

This CD has some of the most beautiful sacred music I have ever heard. Though a requiem is focused on a person's death, Rutter's Requiem leads you to consider the living Christ. "Requiem aeternam" and "Sanctus" are both uplifting and worshipful, and "Toccata in seven" is pure fun.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......2006-06-09

Beautiful is one of those words that I don't use often and I don't use lightly, but this recording of John Rutter's Requiem and other choral works is worthy of description with the full weight of the word. All seven movements of his magnificent requiem are flowing with rich, delicate beauty. Rutter uses the full palate that the orchestra and the chorus has to offer such as the light sustained oboe throughout "The Lord is My Shepherd" and the bellowing low cello in "Out of the Deep." It's cool to hear a mix of Latin and English texts throughout the work. The soprano solo on "Pie Jesu" is breathtaking and the work closes with the sonorous, harmonicaly rich "Lux aeterna." The "Sanctus" is triumphant and the incredibly haunting "Agnus Dei" sends chills up the spine. The main theme introduced in the first movement is just beautiful. I am sure that if I heard Rutter's Requiem performed live and well, it would certainly bring tears to my eyes. It is a simply beautiful piece of music and is very well interpreted on this album. There is an excellent attention to the text and the shape of the phrases. A truly wonderful recording.

As for the other works on this album, they are just as impressive. The bombastic, sonorous "Arise, Shine" has enough G-force to plaster you to the back of your seat. It is wonderful to listen to the dialog between the chorus and the flute in "Musica Dei donum." "A Clare Benediction" is absolutely beautiful, as is "Go Forth into the World With Peace." The chords in "Come Down O Lord Divine" are incredible.

As for the organ pieces, the "Toccata in Seven" is bright and exciting, though a little heavy in some sections. The epic "Variations on an Easter Theme" is just astounding. Rutter takes us through a labyrinth of harmonic and rhythmic variation on a simple theme with wild obligados, fierce runs, dynamic shifts, tense harmonies, argumentative counterpoint and lyrical melodies. This is an amazingly exciting piece with two organists using all eight of the appendages between the two of them to make some amazing music.

This is quite a great collection of great sacred music from one of the best composers around today. Not to mention, you cannot beat Naxos' value. For under 10 bucks, this CD is a must.

5 out of 5 stars A glorious piece.......2005-12-16

--Music--
Rutter's Requiem was written in 1985. In Catholic liturgy, a requiem is a Mass for the Dead, and as such involves strong tones both of mourning and loss as well as elements of hope and eternal life as reflected in Christian belief. Rutter states that, like Brahms and Faure, there are elements that depart from the traditional lines of a Catholic requiem. Rutter takes some of the texts from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Both the first and second movements, Requiem aeternam and 'Out of the Deep', set very dark, low, sombre tones. The use of strings at the beginning of 'Out of the Deep' is very effective, together with funeral-dirge like vocals. This contrasts greatly with the Pie Jesu, light and spiritual. The Sanctus is almost playful in aspect, and the Agnus Dei and Lux aeterna draw the listener higher and higher into the fullness of expectation of God's presence.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

This recording is produced by Rutter, but is performed by the London Sinfonia, a group that he has worked with but is not the usual Cambridge Singers. This performance compares favourably with Rutter's own group, with areas in which there is greater subtlety and depth.

5 out of 5 stars Rutter brought me into the 20th century with this recording........2005-10-01

Prefering Classical, Baroque, & Romantic Music and particulary Requiems, I only gave this recording a chance because I could not find another requiem at the time, shortly after my parents had died. Having sung a few of Rutter's compositions in university I knew of his quality and flavor. To my surprise and complete amazement this piece and this particular recording was an incredible salve on the deepedst of open wounds. To this day, 10 years later, this is one of my top ten favorite albums. I have heard other renditions of Rutter's Requiem, however, none have had the intensity that this one has had, conducted by John Rutter, himself.

I feel this is the greatest of Rutters compositions and as of now , this is the best production of his Requiem I have heard yet. IMHO

Will Oldham, the guitarist-singer-songwriter behind Palace Music and its various incarnations (Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, and plain Palace), is not a rocker by any stretch of the imagination, nor even a particularly good musician. But despite (or perhaps, because of) his limitations, he manages to make disarmingly unique and effective recordings. Palace music, whether buffeted by the slide guitar and banjo of the 1993 debut There Is No One What Will Take Care Of You or framed by the piano figures and low-tech Maya Tone drum machine heard on Arise Therefore, always sounds as if it teeters on the edge of oblivion, one whimper away from breaking down and one languid, creaky note from crumbling completely.

While Oldham's hiccuppy blues tendencies have led critics to brand his Palace music somehow Appalachian, the Louisville-based former actor probably doesn't know enough about song forms to imitate them effectively. But his strained voice and low-fi folk approach to what's essentially indie rock do create the illusion that he's fronting a rustic mountain jug band. Still, Oldham's delicate poetry reveals lyrical sophistication. You know there's something a little more postmodern going on. --Roni Sarig

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Accidental Hero.......2006-04-11

I like this album. It is good.

Yes apparently, despite not being an ahem, particularly good musician, Will Oldham somehow (how? how?) has managed to create fragile yet effective and emotionally resonant music. Wow, quite something for someone who is not a musician (presumably making music is not quite enough to make someone a musician...) So, how could an amateur who apparently doesn't know enough about song forms possibly have made music that was moving and made one think etc? Perhaps it was luck, a full moon, ANYTHING except the skill of the artist. Here's a bombshell: when art has an effect on you, it is because someone has spent a very long time, thinking very hard to make something very specific. Then, the traces of effort, the signs of the artist's hand usually have to be disguised, to enhance the power of the work in question: (books, music painting etc). The effect is not an accident (and yes I know all the Death of the Author stuff....) Here's another bombshell; maybe Will Oldham knows more than it sounds like he does, and maybe his songs are indeed full of intertextual references, walking the line between knowing and referential and using a rustic and homespun aesthetic for a purpose? To put it another way, when you watch a magician do a trick, do you credit "magic" or the performer's skill in creating the effect?

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent!.......2006-02-16

A masterpiece of comforting sounds and images. I know of nothing in this world like this record. Like the tender secret that I keep warm and private, I'll only reveal this record to my most intimately trusted friends. If I go around telling everyone about it, I'd feel too exposed. I think I'll make a little velvet pouch to keep my copy in.

5 out of 5 stars Recline and arise.......2005-03-13

I wish I had the patience to review every Will Oldham record. The man knows how to write a song. Were there a lyricist's word for prose poetry, it would be a good way to describe the form, I think. Oldham has a captivating narrative style, the way he combines words, the surprised in the middle of an anecdote, suddenly brutal or sexual. And such charming, funny titles, which may or may not have anything to do with the songs.

Half of the songs I'm not confident I understand, but I think it's like trying to understand an abstract painting. The undestanding comes in being somewhat passive to the song. I love this particular record because of its consistent mood: heavy, pensive, seductive. No big drum crashes or guitar solos. The words hang like smoke. Spread out against the bong water stains and hit play.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece...no, seriously.......2003-07-11

Will Oldham will one day be looked back upon as a true poet. Now whether his lyrics lack the mastery to achieve such a title -well, there's more to him. If musically he lacks the mastery to achieve such a title, well there's more to him. His gift lies in the marriage between those two aspects - and through that, you get a glimpse into an intuitive and radiant soul. If you own any album by this enigma of an artist, you will see "Arise Therefore" as a departure from his usual approach. This is his most complete work. It should not be individually broken down by song. The highlights are unmistakeably moving. The low points are completely heartwrenching...I wish I had been there at the "All tomorrow's Parties" festival where he played this album out beginning to end. Let "Arise Therefore" slowly creep into your world...there's no way you couldn't appreciate it if you give it a true chance.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific; Like Nothing Else.......2003-02-08

I have been listening to this over and over again for the last three hours and can't get the haunting out of my mind.
The song Disorder has a resonance I cannot describe. Like a black and white photo.
Do it. Get it.
