4 out of 5 stars Man, these guys are versatile...........2006-10-09

For the record, the first release from this band, Aeons of Magick, is nothing like this. While AOM was dominantly symphonic and epic black metal, Spectral Transition-Dimension Sirius is extreme Black/Death fusion in the same vein as Zyklon and Myrkskog (Although I personally like Sirius better than either of those), with touches of keyboards and symphonic elements adding to the thundering battery of the drums and guitars. While I personally liked the sound of AOM, and would have been eager to see the band progress that sound even further, STDS is a solid standalone album and really showed off the band's versatility and sheer creativity; very brutal, very fast, and the less-dominant accompaniment of keyboards adds just enough flavor of epic grandeur to give it a movie-score kind of feel. Hell, Into Forbidden Dimensions was the first Sirius song I ever heard, and it flat out blew me away with its sheer ferocity and engaging progression. At the time I honestly couldn't imagine death metal getting any better than this. Daemon from Limbonic Art joins Gornoth on vocals, often laying down dual harmonies of Gornoth's monstrous roars laid on top of Daemon's rasping shrieks, which sounds so friggin awesome.

And did I mention the excellent cover of Emperor's "Majesty of the Nightsky'? Sometimes I think these guys did this song better than the Black Wizards themselves..

An excellent album; it won't quite transport you to new galaxies the way AOM did, but it offers its own brand of epic brutality to death and black metal.

5 out of 5 stars Best Death Metal of 2001.......2004-02-13

Man, the fact that there's only one review for this album just shows how underappreciated it is!!! Sirius started out on their first LP, Aeons of Magick, as an interesting symphonic black metal band with cosmic/space-y overtones. It's an okay album, but kind of unfocused. Then they got hooked up with Samoth of EMPEROR fame and his Nocturnal Art label, and became a very different beast entirely. This album is much more brutal and complex, with a sound much like the first MYRKSKOG and ZYKLON albums. If you don't know those albums (and you should check them out, if you're a fan of death or black metal), then how 'bout this analogy: Anthems-era EMPEROR with blasting, crystal production, more groove and less slow melodic interludes. Not to say that SIRIUS isn't melodic, though - they're one of the most melodic bands you'll find in this style. And like Emperor, there's so much going on in these songs that it'll take you a bit to learn 'em and get 'em down. (There's even an amazing, spot-on cover of The Majesty of the Nightsky from In The Nightside Eclipse.) Vocals range between black shrieks and guttural death growls, all very well done. Keyboards are well-layered and rich, but never overpower the riffs. And just to throw out one more reference, this is the kind of mix that LIMBONIC ART should've had on their last two albums. Anyway, Spectral Transition was one of my biggest surprises of 2001 and my favorite album of that year (and still in my top 10 of all time for metal). Every death metal fan I've recommended this to has come away with their jaw on the floor - you will as well.

5 out of 5 stars great improvement.......2002-08-17

A huge improvement over their first album, which sounded more like Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse. Instead of going that route again, Sirius changed course for a more brutal and death metal approach that definitely surprised me when I first heard it. Although these guys are from Portugal, they sound Norwegian. In fact, their music reminds me of Zyklon. Definitely a great album that should not be overlooked.
