Customer Reviews:
Great album!.......2007-03-21
Gorefest's "Soul Survivor" is one of the best Rock/Metal albums of its era.A lot of people will say its a drastic departure from Gorefests pure death metal, but if a band doesnt evolve its sound then they will go down in history of the genre as just another statistic.Fortunately,"Soul Survivor" shows how talented Gorefest is.From beautifully crafted melodies to heavy riffs and nicely done solos, this album has it all.I've followed Gorefest since their begginings and this album is still my favorite. You have to be openminded enough to appreciate a masterpiece like this.
1/3 of Gorefest's 6cd GOREOGRAPHY (part 3).......2006-09-28
Some stats: Gorefest 'Soul Survivor' (1996) 18 trks CD TT= 77:23
Gorefest 'Chapter 13' (1998) 20 trks CD TT= 77:06
Ahh, Gorefest. The band that's not afraid to evolve yet stays pretty darn close overall to their Death Metal roots.
Besides the above mentioned albums both cds are loaded with demos, previously unreleased, live and altered versions.
1996's 'Sole Survivor' is the most criticized of their output, straying as far afield of Death Metal than they'd ever go. Because of this they lost a portion of their fanbase. Too bad cause its a great album though different. It's very Death 'n Roll...powerful guitar solos (ala Hendrix), blistering thunder-drumrolls, below-the-belt bass, and some keyboards(!)...but the vocals remain Gorefest all right, though not the growled rumble found on prior releases 'Mindloss' 'False' and 'Erase', but sort of growled-gargled singing here(!). The contrast might sound off-putting at first but it works with the awesome music. The distinct diversion found here stays with this release only (some say thankfully), for in 'Chapter 13' Gorefest get back on track.
'Mindloss' and 'False' were perhaps Gorefest's purist Death Metal offerings. Then 'Erase' came into being, and though terrific Death Metal there were hints that this group wanted to expand their sound (death'n roll slips in).
Perhaps in 'Soul Survivor' they went too far, too fast.
Musically 'Chapter 13' is right on the mark. The music is classic Gorefest (they have a unique take on this Death Metal genre) but it does veer into Death'n Roll territory. Imagine Crowbar (without the sludge) mixed with Blue Oyster Cult. Hard as hell to pidgeonhole but damn good!! As a two-fer with extras, great pix and liner notes, it's a fine package to purchase.
