Customer Reviews:
their best album.......2007-07-22
i like this album the best from them, but i don't like the way it's recorded. if you listen to frail words or ashes, they are a lot more raw. the drums, guitar, and even the vocals sound too clean on this album. i like the songs themselves better on this album, but i like the raw sound on their other albums better. i hope an ocean between us (the new album coming out in August) sounds more like frail words than like this.
Ehh???.......2007-07-09
I like the album booklet, but the music itself is just mediocre. I wish there were more guitar solos, and I can't stand the guys vocals. I guess I don't mind the screaming, as I like "The Fall Of Ideals" from All That Remains. But this guy's screaming is not tight, it's very sloppy. Anyway, don't get me wrong, the music is fast, drums are tight, guitars are chuggy, but I wish the vocalist would try something else out.
Sick rythemic pulverizing music with a subtle touch of melody.......2007-06-13
When first listening to this album, i thought it was a stepdown from frail words of the collapse since the general tone in this album had less melody and not as many catchy vocal hooks but, when listening to it again it grew on me big time. The guitar grooves on Shadows are so damn aggressive and they capture an empowering feeling more so then Frail words of the collapse. In fact I actually like this album more then frail words for that reason.
Every song on this album is done well. The overall tone here is pulverizing rythemic guitars with change over melodic riffs which still sound aggressive. The vocals are in line with everything and add value to each song..
Outstanding Christian Metal Band.......2007-05-24
As a Christian with growing interest in Metal and Hardcore (especially Christian) music, I bought this CD as an experiment. I immediately fell in love with it. As I Lay Dying's vocals, guitars, and drums are all very good with certain sections being completely off the wall. The vocals on Shadows Are Security are mainly screams through the bulk of the tracks. However, a few tracks (confined, the darkest nights, through struggle) have background vocals in the form of normal singing. I think it is important to note that the background vocals on Shadows Are Securtiy do not sound weak or whiny like so many bands (Atreyu, this is you) but merely serve to support the gifted main singer. My only real complaint with this CD is that it is short, only about 43 minutes long, meaning that many of the songs just feel like they are over too soon (hardly any guitar solos). This one complaint is certainly not enough to seriously harm my opinion of this CD, in fact I would say that it is one of the best CDs in all of current metal music, either Christian or Secular.
There is no reason to buy this CD.......2007-05-20
This album by As I Lay Dying is essentially the distillation of what is wrong with metalcore today. The writing is competent, the riffs are somewhat catchy (though often extremely non-technical), the vocals are average, but there's nothing to separate the album from all the other bands in the genre. Sure, there are a few solos to spice things up, and a piano part in "Repeating Yesterday," but these minor attempts at variety are so predictable that they lose any ability to make things interesting. As I Lay Dying plays one riff after another, one song after another, and there's really no distinguishing between them.
All the musicians are competent, but none of them are exceptional. The drummer can play pretty fast and very accurately, but his drum patterns have no variety at all, and the vocalist really doesn't seem to have any idea how to come up with a memorable vocal part. The bassist has the decency to play nothing but root notes so that you don't have to go to the trouble of actually hearing what he's playing. The guitarists are, really, the low point of the band, with the rhythm guitarist seeming to only know one chord (the open C power chord) and the lead guitarist seeming unwilling to write more than four or five riffs per song. The solos are precisely what you'd expect, with the lead guitarist going from note to note at top speed in the most unimaginative way possible.
I don't know if I should call AILD's release `bad,' per se, but there's no reason to call it `good,' either. If you've listened to any metalcore at all, there won't be anything new or fresh for you in this release. If you haven't listened to any metalcore, start with a more competent band. (Zao would be a good choice, but even some less exceptional bands like Bloodlined Calligraphy and Nodes of Ranvier would top this.)
