4 out of 5 stars From anyone else 5 stars..........2007-05-22

...but In Flames has spoiled us...again and again, on Colony, Whoracle, Subterranean, and of course the absolute masterpiece, The Jester Race. So...the expectations are high. Do they meet them? No...Every song on here has great potential, but almost all of them have some flaw or another that takes them from great song to pretty damn good song that you'll never listen too anyways because In Flames has so many other amazing songs. However, there are several songs that are up there with the best. Bullet Ride is a great opener that also is just simply great. An excellent song. Up there with the best. Brush The Dust Away is definitely on my top 5 In Flames songs ever. Pretty much perfect, all the way through, with an opening that pulls you in, great use of drums, and an excellent mix of clean and screaming vocals, not to mention excellent lyrics. People have been making noise over Pinball Map, however I find that song both incomprehensible and not all that great, although it's perfectly solid. I also like the mid-tempo Satellites and Astronauts. The album is solid all the way through. However, I would recommend Colony over this, as I think that album is generally stronger, and also that one includes a couple bonus tracks, which this does not. If you are new to In Flames, this would be a good starter, however, as if you start with The Jester Race, everything else they've done will be ruined for you.

5 out of 5 stars Comparable to Metallica's Black Album.......2007-05-07

This was the first In flames CD i heard, and their best. Its soo easily comparable to Metallica's Black album because of all the albums before and after are different. The earlier ones are heavier, thrashier sounding and You can tell the mastery of the english language has improved with every album. The albums after Clayman are lighter, more mainstream. Think Metallica's Kill'em all as Jester Race and Load/ Reload as Reroute to Remain. Clayman brings out the best of both worlds.

Tracks 1-6 and 9 are my favorites, while the rest fills out the album nicely.

5 out of 5 stars This IS the In Flames Album (not a kid I am 17).......2006-08-30

In Flames. What more is there to say. Well not much more for a real In Flames fan but if your not an In Flames fan there is a lot to be said about this amazing artist. I recently brought this album from my local music store (if you call 2 months recent). You might call me crazy but I didn't let my iPod leave that one CD ever since then from getting played. As for how much longer it'll stay in my iPod getting replays is unknown.
The band In Flames is best described like this. The band is a melodic death metal band. That would be a band with growling vocals and specializes in making beautiful guitar playing. The band has the most unique vocalist in metal history as not a single person has yet to sound like him. He sounds like he means business. Also the vocalist goes amazingly well with the guitars which make Anders the perfect vocalist for the band. He sounds like a hound and my 2nd favorite vocalist. Only Mikhael beats him if you ask me. The guitarists are.. I can't describe them. If I try to describe it it'll end up going like this. A fast, brutal, and beautifully melodic onslaught that doesn't really give up at all. That doesn't even come close to describing them though. The bass is very noticeable here so if you like bass there is no question at all on getting this as a lot of metal bands have unnoticeable bass today. The drums aren't really that noticeable on here though, not at all. Not for people who like drums, as in a lot.
With this CD, you like Colony also buy it. Hardly any difference with this CD except two small things. 1) The sound is SLIGHTLY softer. It is still immensely heavy. 2) Also there is sound effects in the CD. To those who don't have Colony not much else to explain. Heavy, exetremely melodic, and very good sound effects that are mainly aimed at Anders voice and sometimes is used to make the bass noticeable.
This CD has my fine approval stamp. I loved it and find it AMAZING. I BEG of you to buy this CD. You won't regret it at all. - Clay

Song ratings from 1 bein the worst to 10 bein the worst.

-------------------------------------------------------------

1. Bullet Ride: 10/10 Starts off with my favorite song off the CD haha, amazing. This song doesn't sound like any of the songs off the CD at all. It sounds some what closer to Opeth without it's progressive influences. I love this song it's so freakin heavy. The song alone is worth about 10$ of the album's price.

2. Pinball Map: 9/10 The single off the album. Very very good as this is my first In Flames song. Has a thumpy feeling off the song like Bullet Ride except it's got a boomy feeling about it instead of one of those Opeth guitar feelings.

3. Only For The Weak: 10/10 Listening to this right now actually. For the 3rd song in a row I am forced to call this amazing also. I can't believe it; is In Flames really from this planet? It's slow but the guitars are so beautiful and heavy in the song I coundn't help myself but cry when I first heard it. No wonder why this is known as a metal anthem.

4. ...As The Future Repeats Today: 10/10 Ok I know I look biased but still this song is also amazing. The sound has a sorta out of this world sound to it. As in your going into another dimension. It's no ...And Justice For All (making a joke if you get it) but it's still amazing!

5. Square Nothing: 7/10 Finally a song that isn't as good I am glad cause I was gonna get scared if this album was perfect!!! lmao.. This song has a nice soft guitar melody in it then it explodes into faster, heavier guitars. Very nice.

6. Clayman: 7/10 Another good song. The bass is clearly the main point of this song as editation of the song made it like that. Also the vocals are edited to. It makes this song sound powerful so editing music prooves to not be a bad thing completely.

7. Satelites And Astronauts: 10/10 Arghhh... I love this song so freakin much. I laughed at the lyrics. "From this perspective it seems sorta silly". It's the longest song off the album. It's got umm western type guitars actually. But what really gets me off this song is the rhythm. The rhythm is outstanding. It's just another emotional rollercoaster offered up by In Flames. My veins won't last much more of this.

8. Brush The Dust Away: 6/10 This is where the downspiral of the CD occurs. The CD is still good but just not as good. But anyways this song is very heavy. The lyrics are about a card game. Anders Friden is known to play poker games so this song is somewhat personal for him although you coundn't tell by his vocals. The song is definitly bland compared to everything else though.

9. Swim: 6/10 Another ummm average song. It's good but blah. Sorta has an ummm... I dunno how to describe this. God I am sorry. It's unique off the album lets just leave it like that. Some people will like it others will not and I am sadly one of them.

10. Suburban Me: 7/10 Better than the last two songs but still this song is average gahhh. The guitars just like the last song is different. Probably because of a guest guitarist playing on here. It's still fine though and this and the past two songs are DEFINTILY worth a listen. But anyways after this song I was getting really scared that this album was going to end on a sour note. My fears were answered with...

11. Another Day In The Quicksand: 10/10 AMAZING I COUNDN'T BELIEVE IT!!!! Omg I loved this song. My 2nd favorite off the album. The solo is the best off the album. No doubt in my mind about that. The song unlike the last three pulls away at my heart strings. Just like Clayman (the song), the bass is the highlight. Only difference is this song is better than Clayman. This song was worth 8 dollars instead of a simple 1. Not for the weak minded.

If you get the deluxe version there is two more songs. This item you are veiwing is not the deluxe version but if you look around Amazon you will find it.

12. Strong & Smart: 4/10 my least favorite off the album. Horribly weak and bland. It has no direction plus it's short It's still worth a listen every so often though.

13. World Or Promises: 10/10 My 3rd favorite off the album. For me this was the album closer as "Another Day In The Quicksand" closed too fast to be an album closer. This song is very heavy, melodic, and a very very cool vocal style in the chorus. For me the deluxe version was worth it for this song and not Strong & Smart as I felt that song was the only real filler off the album.

As if you coundn't tell I was very pleased by this album. My 2nd favorite from my favorite band In Flames thus far (Jester Race was first but that's obvious). For me it was worth 30 dollars and not 17. I guess that explains why In Flames is one of the most popular bands in Sweden. If only America could like this type of music *sigh*. They don't know what they are missing. Anyways buy this album. Spread the In Flames word around. Even to nu metalers as this was the band that got me out of the nu metal crap.

2 out of 5 stars This is NOT the In Flames album.......2006-08-12

Not that good, simply put. The first three songs are all great, as well as "Satellites and Astronauts", but almost everything else is rather bland. "Swim" employs an obsolete '80s riff on the verses, a vibe that unwelcomely pops up throughout this disc, even in the chorus after the mighty verse riff on "Pinball Map".
This CD is okay, but it just pales to compare to the overpowering songwriting and intricacies of The Jester Race and Soundtrack To Your Escape.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Melodic Death Metal.......2006-07-14

This is in my opinion the best performace from Anders. He mixes his higher pitched vocals found prominatly on the newer albums with the classic Melo Death vocals found on earlier albums. There is also some low talking thrown in a few songs, Bullet Ride being one of them.
Musically, while its not their best, it is very good. Similar to the vocals they mix old and new sound on this CD to create a masterpiece. Pounding and yet melodic guitar work is the In Flames trademark. Also, Daniel's drumming on this album is probably his finest hour, a standout for him being Brush the Dust Away.
Stand out tracks overall are:

Bullet Ride
Pinball Map
Square Nothing
Brush the Dust Away

All the songs on here are awesome those are just my favorites. This is a good CD for newcomers because it isnt too much like the old or new and its a great mix.

All in all, this is not only one of my favorite CDs from In Flames, but all time as well.

4 out of 5 stars Deluxe Edition.......2006-05-10

2000's Clayman followed on the heels of a series of absolutely perfect melodic death metal albums by In Flames: Colony, Whoracle, and the Jester Race. While Clayman was very much a Swedish melodic death metal album, it was obvious the band had updated the sound a bit to include some more modern elements. It wasn't a radical departure from their signature sound (like later releases Reroute to Remain or Soundtrack to Your Escape), but it definitely shook things up a bit. I happen to think it paid off. The band managed to revitalize their sound to avoid becoming stagnant, and the end result is an album truly worthy of the In Flames name.

Nuclear Blast's Deluxe Edition reissue of Clayman contains two bonus tracks, both of which are cover songs. I'm a sucker for a good cover song, especially if it is one you might not expect. In Flames couldn't have picked a more diverse pair of songs. The first one, Strong and Smart was originally recorded by Swedish hardcore band No Fun At All. The second, World of Promises, was originally recorded by Swedish melodic rockers Treat. The Deluxe Edition also has some multimedia extras and a nifty foil cover for the CD booklet.

The track listing is as follows:

1. Bullet Ride
2. Pinball Map
3. Only For the Weak
4. As the Future Repeats Today
5. Square Nothing
6. Clayman
7. Satellites and Astronauts
8. Brush the Dust Away
9. Swim
10. Suburban Me
11. Another Day in Quicksand
12. Strong and Smart
13. World of Promises

NOTE: Amazon's product description has an error or two. The correct name of In Flames's guitarist is Jesper Stromblad, not Jesper St. Romblad (though the latter is a much more Spinal Tap sounding name), and while he was briefly a member of Ceremonial Oath, it was vocalist Anders Friden who appeared on that band's debut album.
