Tourniquet for the New Millennium.......2005-12-05

This is my favorite Tourniquet recording next to their first one "Stop the Bleeding," which had a different (better) singer.

Tourniquet is a metal band that possesses their own very UNIQUE sound, but if backed against a wall I'd describe them as a rough hybrid of Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond and Slayer.

Although they're a very different band on this 2000 recording than they were in 1990 when they released "Stop the Bleeding" -- Ted Kirkpatrick being the sole original member -- this CD still possesses that unmistakable Tourniquet sonic vibe. This pretty much proves that Kirkpatrick was/is the nucleus of the band (i.e. the most influential member).

The vocalist, Luke Christmas -- whoops, I'm sorry, Luke Easter -- is no Guy Ritter (the original vocalist) but he's adequate for the purposes of the band. He's incidentally been with the group since 1994! At first I didn't much like his vocals; he's pretty much an average gruff vocalist. Yet he grew on me. What I appreciate most about him is that he's very varied -- he doesn't "sing" the same way every stanza of every song (a problem with most gruff-styled vocalists). And, believe it or not, he throws in actual singing here and there.

The songs are all long, untraditionally structured and labyrinthian in scope (think Metallica's "And Justice for All"). The first time you hear the album you'll lose your way; this is without a doubt thinking man's metal. Yet repeat hearings will slowly unveil hidden gems spiced throughout; the 'chorus' of "The Tomb of Gilgamesh" is a good example.

As for the drumming, anyone who know's anything about Tourniquet knows that Kirkpatrick's drum-playing ranks up there with the best of the metal genre. Whether you're a Christian, Athiest, Sciencefictiontologist or Hindu, you need to do yourself a favor and expose yourself to this man's incredible talent!

I had a hard time deciding whether to rate this CD 4 or 5 stars; I chose 4 stars solely because my mind hasn't yet recovered from the boggling metal assault.

Awhile back,I thought there were MAYBE two different bands that had the same name,Tourniquet.After digging this CD up and going online,I can easily see now that there is just this one.Didn't realize the L.A. Christian metal ensemble had so may releases out.The eleven cuts here seem to have plenty of well played guitar riffs.Haven't heard that many 'metal' bands like this one.Tracks that make this disc worth repeated plays are "Drinking From The Poisoned Well","Servant Of The Bones","Martyr's Pose" and "Immunity Vector".Basically,just good thinking man's metal.You know,a band with something to say.Line-up:Luke Easter-vocals,Aaron Guerra-guitar,bass&vocals,Cameron Stone-cello,Jennifer Hall-flute and Ted Kirkpatrick-drums.Might possibly appeal to fans of Fates Warning,Nuclear Assault,Leatherwolf and Crimson Glory.

Coming from a guy that owns the Rock Detector Encylopedia, I'm shocked and apalled Torniquet isn't in it. I guess they could be Thrash, but more likely they boarder on Progressive / Power. Oh, you know-it-all purists can hit the road with your technical info, especially Hellstar4... I could give a crap what your baseless knowledge has to say.

Telescopic View is a great find. Tourniquet expands their audience with a few new ideas. It's not the same old re-hashed 90's Tourniquet, but a new idea altogther. For one of the survivors of the fallen 90's Christian Metal scene, this is one of the better ones.

Slayer and Metallica have nothing on this band! Tourniquet plays better faster and are far more technical than Slayer and Metallica. Don't even try to deny it! The drumming is extraordinary! The guitars are wonderful, and oh yeah, did I mention that the lyrics really don't force the bible down your throat? With Microscopic View of a Telescopic Realm, Tourniquet attempt to bring their message to a wider, more secular audience, in addition to their devoted following among fans of Christian heavy metal. Luckily, the band members are inventive enough musicians to make the record worth a listen even for the unconverted; although their primary focus is on melodic, neo-classical metal, there are also ample doses of more complicated progressive metal, as well as chaotic thrash riffing. Ok ok well just say it, this is a Speed Metal band. Oh boy do these guys freakin rule. You know a reviewer is biased if he simply rates Christian bands 1 simply because they believe something different than they do, and then tries to force his beliefs on us. A must buy!

High quality thinking man's metal!.......2004-03-31

I would have to say this is Tourniquet's best album to date. This is saying alot because everyone of their albums are excellent, all with thought provoking lyrics. I have listened to all their albums many times (and I listen to lots of metal in general) so I know what I'm talking about. Ted Kirkpatrick (drummer, guitarist, song writer) is the driving force behind Tourniquet and has been with the band since the beginning. This is why Tourniquet's sound has stayed pretty consistent even with all the band member changes. What Tourniquet does best is metal with a heavy classical influence and "Microscopic View" exemplifies this. Most of their songs use allegory and symbolism to communicate their faith and daily struggles as Christians. I highly recommend Tourniquet to all Christians and anyone else who listens to metal. You will not be dissapointed with this album. Then check out some of their other albums like "Pathogenic Occular Dissonance" or "Psycho Surgery".

Magnet's boyish charm comes through with a new strength as many of the songs, although still questioning life; start to find a new direction and purpose within the stage of intimacy and comfort.

I listen to Magnet because I like being able to listen to dreamy romantic contemplations savoring each inflection of his voice in his magical electronic landscape. Comforting, relaxing, and definitely for those who enjoy each moment in music and the weaving of a delicate intimacy between souls.

Great CD........2006-03-13

Magnet (Even Johansen) is one incredibly talented guy. This is clearly evident in his new CD - "Tourniquet." Every song is extremely well written and catchy. You can hear the creativity and hard work put into each track. There are layers upon layers of effects, loops, various percussion and other instruments - most of which are played by Even himself.

Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing Magnet live in concert. His performance is one that I will not forget. Even played his guitar as a one man band, looping bass notes, percussion, and effects all from one instrument and then proceeded to play and sing the rest of the song. His talent, not only as a musician, but as a writer and creator surpasses many popular indie artists today. I foresee him rising to huge popularity within a couple of years.

"Tourniquet," however, falls short of the amazing-ness that "On Your Side" possesses. For long time Magnet fans, this new CD is a must. But for those who are not quite yet familiar with Magnet, "On Your Side" is the CD that I would recommend first.

"On Your Side" has such a strong passion that you often feel happily lost in his songs. The CD takes you on a journey changing emotions with musical style throughout its entirety.

"Tourniquet," on the other hand, falls short with somewhat predictable song lyrics and a similar sound approach through the whole disc.

This, by no means, makes "Tourniquet" a bad album. It just falls slightly short of the genius heard within "On Your Side." Both CD's are fun, beautiful and creative. If you are a fan of folk and indie, both of Magnet's CD's (and also his "Even Johansen" CD) are for you.

simply amazing..........2006-02-20

I am again amazed by Magnet's talents to write such beautiful songs, lyrically and the way he puts them to music. It wasn't as long of a wait this time to get this album in America as it was the first album, but it was worth the wait. "Believe", "Fall At Your Feet" and "Miss Her So" are my favorite songs on the album.

RELAXING. .......2006-06-29

I find this music can be relaxing at night. I don't know if many would consider that a good thing or not. It sounds great. I've heard a lot of bands that have had string tributes done. Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Radio head, Metallica ect. Other than the NIRVANA string tribute this is the best of the POP MUSIC string tribute CDS I've heard. I like the NIRVANA STRING TRIBUTE just a little more than this one but it's really close.

I loved the idea of strings playing Evanescence songs. I love violins and cellos and so I was very excited about getting this cd and hearing my favorite songs being played on my favorite instruments.

It was just...disgusting. It sounded off-key, and I'm nearly positive the quartet threw in extra notes. I wanted to try singing to these instrumental versions, but the extra notes kept throwing me off. I imagined that the instruments would be softer and follow more of how Amy sings rather than the drums and other instruments, but they did go more for the music rather than the singing when interpreting Evanescence's songs. The music was just too harsh. Harsh is good in rock, but not with many violins.

The string playing is absolutely atrocious.
The idea behind the disc is great, but seriously, the group is not dead; do they really need a tribute?
I thought it would be a good investment...stick with the real Evanescence disc's and decent string quartet playing - like the Emerson string quartet.

This CD is ok, some of the songs are in the wrong key (Going Under, and some others), but they tried. I mean, I can picture Evanescence's music being played classically better than most other bands...

Close, but no cigar..........2005-09-01

Being a musician myself, The String Tribute to Evanescence is an okay cd when you're just in the need for background music. Some songs like "Going Under" are pretty good, while other songs like "Bring Me To Life" are too jarring for the ears used to hearing Paul McCoy belt out his lyrics intertwined with Amy Lee's and getting a messy carchophonic scrawl on an electric violin. Of course, considering the newness of Evanescence, there isn't a whole lot of pieces to choose from unlike, say, Tool. Regardless, the quartet does what it aimed to do, though it does leave you wondering how often have they played the original songs beforehand.

The vocals are just as bad on this album as they were on the last album...nay Tourniquet...fire your singer. I would give this CD no stars if I could.

Their Weakest?.......2006-01-21

Seeing someone review this as the "weakest" Tourniquet cd ever forced me to write my own review.

This amazing cd remains one of my favorite metal cds after 2+ years of listening to it. It is without doubt the strongest Tourniquet cd. Period. And I say that as a fan who has followed them since their first release, and owns everything they've put out.

There are no weak tracks here, or anything that makes me want to skip to the next track. Where Moth and Rust Destroy, Archithustrus, and Healing Waters of the Tigris are standout tracks for me, and In Death We Rise is an interesting end to the cd. But it's extremely good from the first to the last track, and brilliant in places.

Most of Tourniquet's other cds are not as listenable. They usually have some great songs, and some not-so-great songs... their first cd was always the one cd of theirs that was consistently strong from begining to end, other cds were more uneven. And as for their middle-career cds like Crawl to China and Vanishing Lessons, to suggest that those are somehow superior to this gem is an incredible joke.

If this is a disappointing cd, then I can only hope Tourniquet goes on to disappoint more often!

I expect better from Tourniquet.......2005-12-27

I own all 7 of the full-length Tourniquet albums, as well as their EP. I have been listening to these guys for about 14 years now (all the way back to 9th grade). I am not a Tourniquet expert; however I am well versed in their music. The band itself has released some phenomenal albums, some good albums, and a few average albums. Unfortunately, I am sad to report that I find "Where Moth and Rust Destroy" to be just an average album. In fact, it's Tourniquet's weakest full-length album, in my opinion. It's not bad music. Far from it. It's just that when you've heard their first three albums and then listen to this, you expect better.

Tourniquet's music can be divided up into 2 time spans. 1) The first 3 albums are the band's first phase (Stop the Bleeding, Psycho Surgery, Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance) which they had their original linup and released some of metal's greatest music. 2) And then phase two (the band's members changed) is all the albums that followed afterwards (Vanishing Lessons, Crawl to China, Microscopic view of a Telescopic Realm, and Where Moth and Rush Destroy). After the lineup change, Tourniquet could never achieve that level of musicianship from the first 3 albums.

The music on this album is weaker than their usual stuff. Not just because the music itself is not as heavy as Tourniquet's early albums, but the technical aspects of the music are also weaker. There's not the variety that we see in the other Tourniquet Albums. There's no hard-pounding music that totally awes you, like we hear in their first 3 albums. Also, when they try a changeup to the tempo or mood of the song, it doesn't work as well as it should. "Drawn and Quartered" is a good example of this. It sounds too forced.

My personal recommendation: "Where Moth and Rush Destroy" is for those Tourniquet fans who need to complete their library. This should be on the bottom of the list for Tourniquet purchases. Tourniquet is usually an above-average band, so I rate it harsher than I normally would. This album cannot even compare to their monumental album, "Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance."

True to Form.......2005-07-17

Moth and Rust was a true to form Tourniquet release. As a long time fan of the band, this CD follows suit with their earlier CD's. That is not to say that it is the same, old music. The opposite is the case. Tourniquet's pattern is to constantly push the envelope of creativity. While classic elements of Tourniquet music can still be seen, there are a myriad of new effects which Tourniquet uses on this CD to continue their pattern of constan innovation. Tourniquet has truly outdone themselves with this release

Thinking Man's Thrash Metal.......2004-08-14

Tourniquet are the absolute best progressive thrash band Marty Friedman does most of the solos on this, and they are killer. Bruce Franklin of Trouble does the rest and they rule as well. An incredible thrash album; worth any true metal fan's time.

The new is old....is new.......2007-05-04

Big D. One of the forefathers of the christian thrash/speed movement are finally back after, what, six years? This one delves back into the Stay of Excecution/Learn years with just a hint of the thrash that they are still so fondly remembered for on their fist two albums. Seems Jimmy Brown, who is the machine driving D, just doesn't want to play speed demon anymore. Vocally, it's a little more gritty then his latter work but the Bowie influence is still the biggest factor and again it works very well with the style overall. Always able to find good rhythm players to back his riff monster outings the sound here is a sort of progressive/light thrash metal.
Lyrically it's kind of all over, addressing skeptics of christianity, personal pleas to be more like Him above, and what sounds like a bite at those who use religion for personal gain. The lyrics show as much change and growth as the music from the first two albums. D started with just blatant and often direct quotes from the Bible to more allegory and introspection, yet their is really no question where they stand and hope is shining through.
I highly recommend this for any lover of metal in a progressive fashion. If it was any more technical and a little faster it would start moving into the Nevermore range. I love it and give it 4.5 stars as I really would like a song or two of just outright speed as in the old days.

Tourniquet's typical speed metal sound has always been extremely musically complex in a genre that musical ability lacks depth. In Carry the Wounded, the guys slow down and show off their God-given musical ability and lets you know that they are talented beyond their metal roots.

I had a copy of this one and I loved it! Then, one day it disappeared. I'm so glad I found this one, I've been looking for a long time. Tourniquet did a killer job remaking "Oh Well" You oughtta check it out.

at first I thought this cd was weak. it was out of the genere of tourniquet. but after awhile the songs began to stick on me. The guitar sound is superb. the singing by ted is very good. it shows how talented ted is. god has gifted him very much and all the other members of the band. "carry the wounded" is a ear catcher.it gets to you. the acoustic intro is very good. "when love is right" is a ballat to teds exfiancece'. the rest of the cd is good. "Heads" is good title is a paradox but it sounds cool. I reccomend this cd to any "days of the new" fans and christian metalheads. tourniquet rocks!

OK it's hard to say in words how great this album is. As a long time fan of secular bands like metallica and megadeath I had my doubts about Tourniquet's musitianship until I heard this disk> It blew me away how thechnicall the guitar riffs and leads were but, the bass lines are raw and punchy, and co-founder Ted Kirkpatrick's drumming is off the chain. The falsetto vocals are great and the lyrics are deep, and well thought out. This is a must have for any thrash/speed metal fan, Christian or not.

By maintaining the highly technical aspect of their progressive speed metal they thrilled metal fans in both the mainstream and Christian markets. Sanity Obscure would go on to become a standard must have album for fans of thrash metal in the vein of Slayer, Tourniquet, Kreator, Exodus, and early Living Sacrifice. Fast and furious, the dissonant and growling aural mayhem ensured Sanity Obscure was one of those albums that grabbed the hearts and souls of even casual metalheads. To say that this 1991 album has stood the test of time is a grand understatement. The release of this album opened the doors for the band to play mainstream venues with bands like Bolt Thrower, as well as have their albums widely distributed in mainstream markets. Even in the year 2004, Heaven's Metal Magazine reviewed this reissue and describes the Sanity as "...one of the classics of yesteryear...highly technical thrash with addicting, hypnotic riffs, and aggressive drumming that pound relentlessly at your skull."

Once again, I could justify a 5 star rating, but I'm trying to use discretion. If you know Believer's other work, what you need to know is that this is more technical, lyrically superior development from their first album, but only shows the slightest hints of what is to come in the third (and final) album. The lyrics draw from Ecclesiastes-type themes, and the music is definitely experimenting with more time changes (though not overdone) and occasional dashes of what I think are acoustic parts (very brief) to make this an interesting listen. But it remains intense throughout. One song experiments with female vocals, but this is long before this became the trend with various goth doom and black metal bands. Only Celtic Frost could have been an influence on that score. In general, this is lyrically strong, good, straight up thrash with enough changes to keep it interesting. A nice listen, and particularly well done when one considers the dearth of original Christian bands at the time. (Also, the CD version has a not-too-bad sort of punkish
rendition of U2s "like A Song"--not a bad touch).

An Instant Classic.......2005-10-16

The Composition is breath taking, artwork stunning, just simmply amazing. This album Is a must have for any Slayer, Anthrax, Extol, Living Sacrifice, Old Metallica or Becoming the Archetype Fan. Excellent Album. Theres just not enough good things to say about it. Go buy it Now!
