It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars one of the best CDs I own.......2007-07-25

Other reviewers have gone into a lot of depth about this CD already, so I'll keep my endorsement short and to the point. The CD is fantastic and is one of the best that I own. You will never get tired of listening to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Simply addictive!.......2007-07-12

This is her best album!
Her voice is unbelievable, the delivery is amazing and the lyrics are stunning!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting sounds.......2007-07-06

For 3 months, my Norah Jones CDs have taken over my car stereo. This woman is very talented!

5 out of 5 stars The phenom Ms Jones.......2007-06-27

This is such an outstanding production, so much better than the later(I think) CD. Miss Jones should be careful which guitar players back her up. She should stick to Bill Frizell or maybe she should try Mark Knoffler, if she can get him away from Emmy Lou.

5 out of 5 stars Glad i bought it ( Part II )...!.......2007-06-20

I knew that Nora Jones was good music but i had no idea just how good...My sister-in-law bought me this CD for Father's Day...i have listened to it 3 times today. The way i would describe her lyrics and delivery is equal to "Musical Rose Petals". So smooth and so inviting is her voice. I really love the Piano work also. Her birth name being "Geethali",Nora Jones along with the likes of Michael Buble have added a nice, new, fresh selection of music to today's currently enemic sound. This album made her only the second artist ever to sweep the "Big Four" being Album,Song,Record,& Artist of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2003. Standouts for me include: "Come Away With Me","Don't Know Why", and i really like her rendition of Hank Williams SR.'s "Cold,Cold Heart". With her throw back to Billie Holiday/Roberta Flack days voice coupled with a very welcomed piano based style, Nora Jones can take me away anytime! If you've waited to give her a listen ,as did I, do yourself a favor and don't wait any longer.

Norah Jones blew everybody away with her jazzy, country-tinged, Grammy-winning debut CD, Come Away with Me. On this recording, Jones doesn't mess with her trademark formula. Under Arif Mardin's cozy coproduction, Jones is supported by her writing partners, her Handsome Band, and some special guests (country legend Dolly Parton, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of the Band, and jazz drummer Brian Blade, to name a few). Jones's Texas-twanged vocals and her sparse acoustic and electric Wurlitzer piano lines enliven the CD's 13 tracks, from the light and lively single "Sunrise" to Tom Waits's "The Long Way Home" and the bouncy duet with Parton, "Creepin' In." Jones's soul-baring piano/vocal rendition of Duke Ellington's "Melancholia," retitled "Don't Miss You at All," proves she's a true Blue Note artist with unlimited potential. --Eugene Holley Jr.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best.......2007-06-17

"Feels Like Home" is a welcome addition to any fans' collection. I gave it four stars simply because I did not think it was as good as her first or third CD. If you like Norah's other work you will like this CD, but if you don't have extra money or you would like to introduce yourself to Norah Jones purchase "Come Away With Me" or "Not Too Late" instead.

2 out of 5 stars a snoozer.......2007-06-09

Wonderful intimate voice, great musical heritage, extremely monotonous songs....great if your trying to lower your bloodpressure or achieve REM state. This ain't jazz it's elevator music.

A 20-track collection from the Reprise years that tries to cover too much ground. Very Good Years sweeps from the early 1960s to 1979's "New York New York," focusing on the most obvious Sinatra standards. The watchword here isn't art but populism. That's not a problem, really--but it means that serious fans (or those aspiring to be) will be better served elsewhere. It would be a fine introduction for the casual music lover, but so would any decent collection. For a compact Reprise-era sampler, try either this one or something from the Greatest Hits series. --Gavin McNett

All my favorites for riding in the car.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-05-29

Great stuff on this CD for any Sinatra fan. From the theme from "New York New York" to "It Was a Very Good Year" you'll find all the best that Sinatra is known for.

5 out of 5 stars Let's be Frank about This.....................2007-05-16

The last thing that your Metamorpho wants is to be typecast when it comes to his reviews. That said- I may get criticized severely for straying outside of the pop/rock genre. But, as I advised in a bygone review, one has to stretch and see what else is out there. The world is vast and there is much to explore. (Your Metamorpho has recently discovered old, pub drinking folk tunes- and you said my musical taste was not eclectic!). Regardless, many Seer moons ago some friends of mine played Sinatra for me and then, as they say, the rest was reflective history.
This man is an absolutely incredible and astounding vocalist. Perhaps, one of the very best in the 20th century. You just have to listen to him, the cool smooth sometimes swingin', sometimes the serious and somber timbre of his vocals. What makes him so special anyway? It's how he phrases the lyrics, how his soft blanket of enunciation and knowing the right emphasis to use creates a very high standard that others hope to achieve. It is hard to define Sinatra so that you'll understand. But, if you're not too familiar with him, then this c.d. will help make it clear. It's everything: his vocals, the band sound, the arrangements. This is so fine- and so very classic and quality. Let's pour a drink, relax, and listen to Sinatra. So easy and wonderful on the ears.
Of course, as you would expect, this C.D. is filled with songs by the greatest songwriters of all time. Cole Porter,Johnny Mercer, Rodgers, Cahn-VanHeusen, Sondheim. We have exceptional compositions here. Plus Frank's later hits, "Strangers In the Night", "Summer Wind", "My Way", "New York, New York". The c.d. is a joy with great renditions by Frank. I especially like "The Best is Yet to Come" with Count Basie and his Orchestra. So cool, so jazzy, so Frank.
This is a great starting point by merely scratches the surface of his excellence. I suggest getting the box set of "The Capitol Years". That is his essential classic phase with arrangements by Nelson Riddle. You just can't get any finer music. Take my word. And even then, there is much more about him to discover. The best IS yet to come.
In conclusion, your Metamorpho, from time to time, needs to forget the rat race out there. Frank is a refreshing oasis of sound in sometimes a desolate music scene. He will always be this - for the ages. His legacy is cemented and will always be the best as more generations discover him.
Jazzy, suave, essential - this is Sinatra.
Very high marks for this one.
Now you must excuse me- Frank calls and a martini awaits me.

Flying to the Moon--- the "music for the ages" Metamorpho

4 out of 5 stars I really like this cd.......2007-05-14

This cd is great because it has alot of my favorite songs. My favorite track is stranger in the night. I recommend this cd to anyone who likes Frank.

5 out of 5 stars Sinatra is God..........2007-04-21

Of Jazz singers anyway. I don't even know what to say. He is the best Jazz singer of all time in my opinion (sorry Billie), and this is his best disc. Sure there are other cuts that are must haves, but as a compilation there is no comparison... This is the best one. It's a great place to start a Sinatra collection, or if you just want a single disc of his best stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Not as seen on TV........2007-03-12

Firstly, this is not the two-disk set you've seen on TV. It is just one CD. So bear that in mind when pondering your purchase. That said, it is a decent compilation of some memorable hits from the last eight or ten years and makes an excellent gift for that friend or family member we all have who just can't move on from their highschool days. A solid C.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat happy.......2007-02-13

I thought this was the same CD version as the one I have seen on the TV commericals. This is the shorter version. I wasn't aware of that until I opened it.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong CD Listed Online.......2007-02-07

I bought this CD thinking it was the 2 CD set I saw in the commercial, and I was wrong. It is a single CD with only half of what the TV version has.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2007-01-22

the songs are great, but its not the 2 cd music from the tv. it was dissapointing in that sense but other than not having all the songs. its great.

2 out of 5 stars upset.......2007-01-20

When making the purchase I was unaware that there was both a double disc and a single disc version of this product. When i researched it I only found the double version. I thought I was buying the double version and did not see any disclaimer that there are different versions and I needed to check which one I was buying. Had I known this was a single disc version, knowing only about a double disc version being available I would not have made the purchase.

English singer-pianist Jamie Cullum comes into view as an already heralded jazz-pop artist, signed to a million-pound contract and riding a CD that's already registered double platinum in the UK. The "jazz" label doesn't hang that comfortably on the 24-year-old Cullum--he's more in the mold of polished lounge swingers like Bobby Darin and Buddy Greco and has more in common with, say, Billy Joel (definitely a "New York State of Mind") than any traditional jazz artist you might mention. An ironist who covers both Cole Porter and Radiohead, he's aware of the contradictions that he embodies. Those contradictions drive the title track as Cullum's lyrics plumb "twentysomething" uncertainties ("Maybe move back home and pay off my loans/Working nine to five answering phones") while moving to a mock-primitive chanted riff that's pure '50s hip. What surprises most is Cullum's emotional and musical range, and the way he combines methods to create depth and complexity. "Blame it on My Youth" is delivered with the heartfelt delicacy of Chet Baker, while his reading of "The Wind Cries Mary" suggests that Jimi Hendrix might have just about invented smooth jazz. "I Could Have Danced All Night" explodes with playful energy and creativity, launched with scat singing over a rhythm pounded out on drums and piano wood. Cullum has energy and talent to burn, plus a postmodern knack for layering idioms that signals a welcome direction for jazz-pop. As "Lover, You Should've Come Over" attests, he can also project an emotional intensity that breaks through the clever arrangements. --Stuart Broomer

I saw Jamie Cullum on a PBS special and was captivated by this young man's passion and true love for the music he performed. I immediately went online to purchase his CD's. Definitely worth the money, and you are supporting a great young hip artist.

...how wonderful this album is. I love it and have been listening to it often since I received it 2 days ago! Fun, original, get-your-feet-tapping jazzy tunes. Jamie Cullum enjoys doing what he does and it comes through the music. His energy is contagious! Definitely a must-see if he were ever to come to this part of the world.

5 out of 5 stars A male version of Diana Krall.......2007-01-14

I guess the review's title says everything. Jamie Cullum is a wonderful artist, he combines jazz, rock and pop in a perfect manner. His performance playing the keyboards is excellent and his distinct voice is the last element of his success.

Amazon.com essential recording

When Jimmy Buffett eventually becomes the subject of a college course--and given his enduring popularity as a singer-songwriter and author, you know he will someday--here's what'll be on the final exam. Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads is so named because the four-CD collection divides Buffett's collected works among those categories, giving each disc a theme. From early classics such as "Biloxi" and "Come Monday" to more recent fare known only by the Parrothead cognoscenti, this set is the perfect accompaniment to a cool drink and a hammock on a summer afternoon. What kind of cool drink? Well, that'll be on the final, too. --Daniel Durchholz

This is a great collection. All of Jimmy's favorites plus many less known songs. I am really enjoying the Parrot Head Handbook that comes with the set. We wore out the "Boats" CD so I am now ordering one for the house and one for the truck. This particular CD (Boats) has all my favorites on it so I have listened to it countless times over the past 3 or 4 years. I will let my husband have the older copy and I will keep the new one. "A Pirate Looks at Forty" is my favorite, followed closely by "Havana Daydreamin" "One Particular Harbor" "Changes is Latitudes". I really love the old stuff but I also have most of the newer CD's as well. Needless to say, I highly recommend this purchase.

I got this CD set for my Dad and by boyfriends dad, they both love it!
I is a great gift that no one refuses!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for every Parrothead CD collecion.......2007-05-08

I have really enjoyed this collection. I DJ at a country/western night club and I insert Jimmy Buffett album cuts into my play list and my customers really appreciate it. This is a broad collection of songs that are categorically put on different theme discs which make it quick easy refernece for me when needing to find a particular song fast. I also enjoy putting a disc in my car CD player to fit the particular mood I am in. They help me relax and keeps me on a pretty much permanent mental vacation. This is a MUST for the casual and hard-core Jimmy Buffett fan.

4 out of 5 stars The 2 CD Set is a Better Bargain If you Count the Songs Correctly.......2006-07-15

I just wanted to correct the reviewer "Tanya" who stated that the 2 CD Platinum Edition only contained 20 songs versus the 18 on this particular edition. The set with 2 CD's is a GREAT value because it includes 32 songs, not 20!!!! It helps to count the entire song list when comparing the CD's.

The 2-CD Edition includes the following songs that are not included on the edition with only 18 songs:

1. Angel Song - Great White
2. Don't Close Your Eyes - Kix
3. Fly High Michelle - Enuff Znuff
4. Honestly - Stryper
5. House Of Pain - Faster Pussycat
6. If You Needed Somebody - Bad Company
7. I'll Never Let You Go - Steelheart
8. I'll See You In My Dreams - Giant
9. Love Is On The Way - Saigon Kick
10. Miles Away - Winger
11. Only Time Will Tell - Nelson
12. The Flame - Cheap Trick
13. When I See You Smile - Bad English
14. When I'm With You - Sheriff

You can figure that each of these songs would cost $0.99 if purchased individually through a service such as iTunes, so I recommend paying the extra money for the 2 CD edition versus purchasing this CD with only 18 songs. This is the best collection of power ballads on the market.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't seem to be what the commercial promised.......2006-03-10

I imagine that this disk has all the songs advertised on TV, but somehow I remember being a lot more excited about it while watching the commercial than I was when I got the CD. There are a few true gems on here though- perhaps those are the only songs they played in the commercial. Something everyone should know: the 2-cd edition costs twice as much, but only has 20 songs compared to 18 songs on this disc. This disc lacks 3 of the songs that the other set has, but has an additional song not included in the 2-cd set.

5 out of 5 stars No one has put these power ballads in one collection like this! Excellent! .......2006-02-19

No one has ever put these power ballads together like this on one single CD! Although there is a 34-song collection of this CD, the 18 chosen for this collection were pretty well chosen. But this was a strong subgenre from 1987 to 1991, when there were an increasing number of power ballads by heavy metal bands becoming hits. It seemed common for the ballads to peak at No.1 or 2, so very high, while their rockers finished lower at No. 6, 7, 8 or 10. Maybe some people were more comfortable with their ballads than the layers of loud guitars blasting over them. They surprisingly balanced well with the R&B ballads and pop dance hits back then. Most of these songs I've seen on other compilations, but this is the first one to include Carrie's Europe and Kiss' underrated Forever. This one is more balanced, from the acoustic numbers of Extreme, Tesla, Poison and Mr. Big, to the loud guitars of High Enough, I Remember You to even the bluesy Cinderella ballad which I still love. I still love Whitesnake's adventurous Is This Love. It's even message driven, even in Scorpions' Wind Of Change. And there's something about the quiet mood of Queensryche's Silent Ludicity that still is haunting today. Another favorite I like here is Kix' Don't Close Your Eyes, which avoids the typical formulaic approach of the other power ballad hits and has a strong musical performance all throughout. This is a dynamic collection to recall this solid music period in popular music.

4 out of 5 stars Spirit from 4400.......2007-08-01

This soundtrack is prety good! It's Succed the feelings from TV series,. about caracters and his tales. Listen it, is revival the best episodes and will travel to another reality. Failures: the last track (A place in time version Landau Orchestra), the track 6 (Enginers.. compositors?) and overall: The principal theme,A place in time... is too short!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing yet satisfying..........2007-07-27

It was actually the soundtrack that got me interested in the show. An excellently eclectic mix of mainstream and lesser-known artists, this album is perfect for listening while reading or sitting outdoors on a nice day. It's really standalone. Few of the TV soundtracks I've heard have been enjoyable just as a compilation, and this one breaks the mold.
After watching the show, I've gained a new appreciation for the album as well because it contains all the songs from the show's most climactic moments. Both as a soundtrack and a CD it is great.

4 out of 5 stars really good to listen.......2007-07-22

I like the songs and instrumental versions a lot - it is a good mix between alternative and pop/rock music. Although the main team (A Place In Time) is only about 1 minute - the reason for only 4 star-rating. I hope there will be soon a longer version.
Music on this cd is from all 3 season! Very good are also "Into the Fire", "Worry About You" and "Salvation".
If you like the music in 4400, you should have this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Buy for one song.......2007-07-21

Buy this to get "A Place in Time" by Amanda Abizaid as this is the only way I've found to get it. Only complaint is that it's not long enough.

4 out of 5 stars the good songs are very good.......2007-06-26

I really like this CD. The songs that are not so good (in my opinion) are still tolerable. The very good ones are just that...outstanding. I am biased because I really like the show and the music really adds to the on-screen events. I do think that you probably need to be a fan of the show to like most of the music on this CD...

Jamie Cullum returns to center stage of the jazz crossover world with an incredible new album, Catching Tales. A smorgasbord of jazz standards, pop, swing, and r&b grooves, this is the ultimate Jamie Cullum album. Jamie has collaborated with a range of music svengalis, including Guy Chambers, Dan the Automator (from the Gorillaz and collaborations with DJ Shadow), Salaam Remi, Ed Harcourt, and many more, but he's careful not to forget his roots. His brother Ben has cowritten a number of tracks on this album, as he did on Twentysomething.

Album Description

This Deluxe Limited Edition features 15 tracks plus bonus DVD containing Telling Tales, an exclusive 20 minute behind-the-scenes documentary following Jamie throughout recording and mixing the album, the video shoot and on the road across Europe, including a fabulous interview. 28-page booklet containing exclusive photos, Jamie rarities, extended liner notes plus a track-by-track introduction from Jamie himself! Universal. 2005.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't this thing have a zero setting?.......2007-05-20

To all of you who fell for it once again, I shall repeat myself, though in a slightly different and more direct way: if you want jazz go and buy a Charlie Parker record; if you want great jazz singing, go and buy some Billie, or Ella for that matter, or some 50s Sinatra. Jaime Cullum is not, and never has been a jazz musician. He was labelled as one simply to sell pop records, but that is an insult to pop music. This is yet again rubbish thrown at you by a multi international company. A fool is easily parted with his money, yet again! Ha HA HA HA HA!!!!

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-03-20

After two fabulous contemporary "old school" jazz albums which I would recommend to anyone (Pointless Nostalgic and Twentysomething), this album is more like some sort of bad half-breed between "old school" jazz and pop. And not that a cross between jazz and pop couldn't be good music, but this one just really isn't. It seems that he is trying to transition between musical genres, and is falling flat on his face in the process. I have listened to it again and again trying to make myself like it, but it just isn't happening. Save a few tracks, the songs on this album are rather uninspired and dull, and I fear that these days Jamie Cullum really does "Want To Be A Popstar"...

4 out of 5 stars Better voice, less hooks.......2007-03-16

Cullum's voice and musicality are better than his last album but the tunes don't hook me they same way as the stuff he&Ben wrote for "Twentysomething."

However, this is still an enjoyable album with lots to like.
