Worst Album Yet, Not The Real Dope.......2006-02-07

Don't get me wrong, Dope is a great band; on all their other CD's. This one is like Dope gone limp. If you think Dope is a little hard, get this album, it may be perfect. By far their best album is American Apathy, which kicks ass. This album has one good song, which is Burn, but you can get a better version on American Apathy. Hopefully Dope doesn't produce another album like this one, this one is almost like teenage punk rock which goes against their earlier CDs and doesn't match their music style. I have all their CDs, then decided to purchase this one, I was let down to say the least. Their softest album yet.

not so dOpE.......2005-10-05

Ive never heard any other dope albums but I hope this is the worst because it lacks effort and talent. Poor lyrics that I could have written and not so technical guitar playing. What kind of song is B*tch. Decent drums. Poor effort.NOt worth listening to but i probably will anyway and end up liking it. heh

Awesome Band, OK Album.......2005-10-03

Dope is an awesome band, the songs they make are great additions to the world of hard rock. Unfortunatly I didn't dig this album as much as I liked the first two and American Apathy. If your buying the album for the song Bitch don't bother there is another version on the American Apathy album and I thought it was a better cut.

Practice is said to make perfect, but perspective is arguably just as important. Group Therapy, Concrete Blonde's first new record after an eight-year hiatus, shows that original band members Johnette Napolitano, Jim Mankey, and Harry Rushakoff have gained some of just that. They've stepped out of the shadow of the Pretenders and shrugged off the Goth overtones that characterized their last commercially successful record (1990's Bloodletting), and have found that the balance between stylizing and emulating comes from putting personality--not posturing--first. Group Therapy opens with the radio single "Roxy," a tribute in form and content to Eno-era Roxy Music. With a pastiche of lyrics delivered in Napolitano's strong, throaty voice, the song sets the stage for a dozen tracks ranging in style from adult-oriented rock tunes to truck-stop country ballads to angry rock ragers about growing up and getting real. Though they occasionally read like high school poetry, the lyrics are redeemed by the sincerity of the band's performance. Music to slit your wrists by?.......2004-12-20

I bought this c.d. out of a lingering sense of loyalty to a band that I once enjoyed tremendously. I was sad when they broke up. I was nostalgically pleased when they got back together. But I have to admit that I wasn't expecting that much. In my general experience, bands split when they run out of stuff to say, and they get back together because they miss the moolah, not because they suddenly found new material. I would have been satisfied with a few good songs on this disc. Instead, I got a really solid album that's a, um, bit of a downer.

The album is riddled with nostalgia, longing and an awareness of the pending end. This always introspective group is digging deep into the territory of grief-expert Kubler-Ross. There are tributes to the glory days of other musicians (David Bowie-"all the young dudes" and Rod Stewart-"maggie may") and their own ("I know you liked me better then"). There's a teary-eyed nod to the Roxy and what reads like a lament for lost good-ol' days (in Violent, where "nothing seems to mean what it meant"). There's what seems to me an element of lash-back anger towards the accouterments of celebrity in Valentine, essentially a threat-song from a steel-spined goth queen who seems contemptuous of at least the chroniclers of celebrity. There's the "life is lonely" lost connections, lost love, last calls, last chances of the Latino-tinged Llorona and the superior boozer Take Me Home. Then there is the "ubi sunt"-the "those days are gone," the time-is-ending, end-is-near, days-are-passing songs, like True Part III ("& when / I leave this life / what will you say of me / you who never knew my heart?") and the finale, Memory.

If I had to pin `em to a mood, I'd say it's overall one of bittersweet acceptance. In spite of the wistfulness of When I Was a Fool, for instance, and the awareness of lost chances ("do I surrender & give up my dream / for a brick in the wall & a washing machine"), the song's ultimate message is a strong one: "still, I'd rather be me / than anyone else."

The album seems to intermingle hope and despair, most graphically on the song Angel, made menacing, mocking and tender by lead-singer Johnette Napolitano's razorwire whisper and sardonic laugh. Musicially, it is largely lacking the kind of hooks that make good radio play with a possible exception on Fried, a rap-rock-rage song that could use a little more of the old Concrete Blonde energy, ala Jesus, Please Forgive Me (For the Things I Am About to Say) and a definite exception on Tonight, a relatively upbeat and poppy song that is as short on meaningful lyrics as it is long on sound.

But the album is a cohesive, coherent whole, a melodic soundtrack for an evening with a bottle of whisky and a few old friends, or, anyway, very good inspiration for a bout of bittersweet introspection.

I'd rate it 3 1/2 stars.Never being THAT huge of a Concrete Blonde fan,I remember seeing them perform live awhile back and have always been drawn to their first widely known tune,"Still In Hollywood".Forgotten about them until here recently,with the release of this comeback CD,which I'm sure their long-time fans would probably get more out of it than I did.All three original members are back in the ranks.Johnette Napolitano-bass&vocals,Jim Mankey-guitar and Harry Rushakoff-drums.Can't help but notice that Mankey's guitar playing JUST may be the best thing this disc has going for it.Tracks that I liked best were the glossy pop opener "Roxy","Tonight",the rocking "Take Me Home"(sounds as good as their early material),"Valentine" and "Inside/Outside".Just good straight ahead Los Angeles-based post punk is what I would call it.Might appeal to fans of Psychedelic Furs,The Call,Garbage and The Sparks.

A great comeback CD after 8 long years.......2004-07-02

I was so psyched when I found out that Concrete Blonde was reuniting. I won from Manifesto a copy of the CD single for Roxy even before it was released, and I played it nonstop. The rest of Group Therapy had the same effect. After 8 years away from one another, I was glad to see that Johnette, Jim, and Harry could still make great music together. Although most critics found Group Therapy to be good, but not in the same league as their past efforts, I disagree. I found Group Therapy to be very catchy, but with a different and more mature sound. Still willing to take chances and deliver with great hooks. Maybe not as many classics as say on Bloodletting, but every song is consistently good, and a few are flat out stellar. Group Therapy is another worthy collection in th Concrete Blonde arsenal! Go get it!

One of the best bands of our time.......2003-05-13

I listened to about half of the CD today on the way to Smyrna & back. Roxy is said to be the hit song on the LP and it's definately good. The next three tracks were outstanding also, even more so because of the lyrics/vocals.. or maybe the awesome guitar playing.. or maybe the great drumming. I can't decide.

It was sunny and hot out, a nice day to be outside I guess (except for that evil tan-causing sun).. I was driving along 285 almost in tears while listening to each song... Johnette Napolitino is one of the most talented wordsmiths I've ever listened to. And she is still a very beautiful woman inside and out. Wish there were more singers like her. And more guitarlsts like Jim Mackey.. the guy is phenomenal!

About damn time!.......2002-12-30

Damn.....I've been waiting for Concrete Blonde to get back together again for years, somewhat with anticipation, along with a bit of dread (I've bought my share of [poor quality] "We're back after 8 years" CD's). Let me tell you that I was pleasantly surprised with with CD. Their Sound was a bit different (Every Concrete Blonde album had their signature sound). First- "Roxy" blew me away - they've been one of my favorite bands in the last 30 years, including Bryan Ferry's solo albums - Thank you JN for that classic jewel. Another favorite was "memories", and "Violent". Please.....keep me going with future albums - Regards, WBY

Southgang simply ROCKS!.......2007-07-10

Southgang is one in a line of bands that came along at the tail end of the 80s metal scene and didn't get the recognition they deserve. They had one minor hit from their debut album ("Tainted Angel"), but this album is where the band really began to strut their stuff. Another reviewer mentioned that had this album been released in 1987 it would have went Platinum... I couldn't agree more. I've owned this album since it came out in 1992, and with every listen, I am still just completely blown away at how much I enjoy listening to this. I would rate this album as one of the top ten discs in my entire collection. Songwise, I could honestly live without the first track, but from there on, this album is simply as good as melodic rock gets. Fire in your Body, Final Resting Place, Misery, and The Call are tremendous standout tracks. The only downside to all of this is that singer Jesse Hart hasn't done any other work to my knowledge outside of one track on Erik Turner's Demo for Diehards album. He's really a terrific vocalist, and you'll wish there was more available from him. But on the flipside, guitarist Butch Walker took his turn behind the mic and has released a handful of quality albums through The Marvelous 3 and solo work. Bottom line, if you're a fan of Bon Jovi, Warrant, Skid Row, etc., then you should certainly pick this one up. The debut is almost as good, and should be picked up if you can find it reasonably priced, too.

Underrated rock and roll band...........2004-04-01

Southgang came out a little too late and missed being a part of a great era of music. This disk surfaced in 1992. Had it come out in 1987, it would've gone platinum

Worth picking up if you dig the glam metal style music. These boys from Rome, GA do it a with a southern twang. Some absolute classic on here. "Fire In Your Body" and "Best Friends Girl" are great - but "The Call" and "Misery" back to back, melting into one long song, are the highlights of this disk. Worth it for those two tunes alone.

I had this tape about 6 years ago, found one copy of this one, and one of tainted angel at Best Buy. I don't have them anymore, but some of their songs, especially Final Resting Place is just so awesome!... If you still like bands like Trixter and Poison and stuff like that, you will DEFINITLY like Southgang!

Physical Therapy is just what the name implies--music that soothes the soul, mind and body! These St. Louis brothers can COOK and each track blends beautifully to the next to make a soundtrack suitable for romance. Jim McNeely cut his teeth with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra in the late 1970s, and has been the pianist of choice for any number of big bands since then. Yet Group Therapy, recorded with McNeely's own crack 10-piece unit, suggests that the little big band may be his ideal setting. McNeely gets right down to work with "The Fruit," a deconstruction of Bud Powell's classic that slices and dices the melody into aerated, unpredictable fragments. He pulls off a similar hat trick with "Silent Night," disclosing the tune one phrase at a time and finally re-harmonizing it as a lilting waltz. Even the mother of all standards fails to intimidate this champion arranger: his take on "Body and Soul" boasts a conventional bridge, but the choruses float atop an assortment of vamps and fat chords, marred only by Dick Oatts's slightly epicene soprano. McNeely's own compositions are a little less distinctive. Still, the title cut--in which a somber and memorable theme is repeatedly interrupted by solos, duos, and more than one musical ménage à trois--is a rousing success, as is "A Perfect Six," with particularly snappy contributions from the leader and bassist Cameron Brown. And whichever hat he's wearing, McNeely maintains an agile, helium-light ensemble sound. Yes, there are echoes of Birth of the Cool--thanks in part to the inclusion of Tom Varner's French horn--but Group Therapy is an original creation, without a revivalist bone in its body. --James Marcus

A fun, quirky blend of small group and big band.......2003-05-14

To me, big bands almost always sound a bit stilted or overrehearsed in contrast to small groups, no matter how swinging they might be. Yet, the power of the big band sound still has its appeal to most of us jazz fanatics.

Here, McNeely's ten-piece band gives us the best of both. It's a big band sound in which there's enough solo space and quirky arrangements to give the discerning listener feelings of a smaller, more intimate group.

The highlights are a take of "Silent Night" that's so sly and smooth it'll sneak up on you, leaving you grinning, and a relaxing---but not boring---cover of the classic "Body and Soul."

Even if you don't usually like larger groups, take a chance on this one.

I took a chance and purchased this without ever hearing it. It's now my favorite CD. There are six tracks w/soothing music & crystal bowls & 9 tracks w/crystal bowls alone. You can use the CD while meditating or even while sleeping. The vibrations made by the crystal bowls help to open and balance your chakras (energy wheels which create your body's aura). There are seven different sized bowls on the CD, and the pitch of each one relates to one of the seven main chakras. Healthy, balanced chakras mean healthy, balanced body, mind, emotions & spirit. The energy from your chakras effects your body from the molecular level outward. Closed, blocked, weak chakras lead to sickness, and eventually disease. You can feel the vibrations of the crystals bowls. I put this CD on when I go to bed and fall asleep to it. I let it play all night. It's VERY soothing! Give it a try. I think you'll enjoy it too.
