5 out of 5 stars Past, Present, and Future.......2007-01-19

Morbid, irreverant, funny. That's the style of Rob Zombie---and a great style it is. Past, Present, and Future gives an incredible scope to the music of the early White Zombie and the late, later, and latest (work) of Mr. Zombie, the man of dark seasons and gothic wit.

HIStory's 2 CDs (one hits, the other new) were Jackson's attempt to connect his glorious past to a dodgy present and--given it's commercial and artistic performance--cast a shadow on his future. Conceived as his formal coronation as the "King of Pop," HIStory's second disc instead presents Jackson as an epauletted, single-gloved Richard III. By turns paranoid, angry, bitter, sentimental, and, in one instance, possibly anti-Semitic, HIStory was less a collection of songs than a case history. A few tracks--mostly those produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--are sleek, modern pop/soul, but too much of HIStory has the overblown vacuousness of a musician who knows his time is past, but is unsure as to how to react to the situation. --Steven Mirkin

4 out of 5 stars Not bad but...........2007-02-20

How many times people have to pay for Michael Jackson greatest hits album? Come on this should have been a single disc album. I already bought all of his old albums! Anyway I review the new songs there.
I liked They Don't Care About Us, Stranger In Moscow, Earth Song, You Are Not Alone, Come Together, and Little Susie. They are all excellent tracks and I enjoyed them greatly. Scream, This Time Around, History, 2 Bad, and Smile are all average songs acceptable as filler
D.S., Money, Childhood , and Tabloid Junkie are very much junk.
Please Michael we all know you need privacy and tabloids are not treating you right and you had a "bad" childhood. I am sick and tired of hearing these type of songs over and over which are similar to old ones. So please stop nagging and make unique music

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Makes History.......2007-01-16

The title of the album is very appropriate. With the first CD giving us a blast from the past of amazing songs, and the second disk pulling us into the future. Many people have complained about the second disk, but I find that the songs on it are quite brilliant. The first song, Scream, is one of the most original songs of the nineties. It has a sound you won't find anywhere else, and the brother/sister duo mix their vocals extremely well. The second track, They Dont Really Care About Us, is so passionate and stimulating. You almost can't help turning up the volume. Stranger in Moscow is one of the most beautiful songs MJ's written, and its production is top notch. Earth Song is THE most beautiful song he's done, and it has a feel that gives you goosebumps. Overall, the album is one of the best I've heard. Some people critisize it for being too angry, but the anger gives the songs a passion and a depth that other artists lack. Its definitely worth the money for this deep and interesting work of art.

5 out of 5 stars HIStory Is Great.......2006-12-27

The media has attacked this album since day one! Why? Well, the reason is that this album is viciously attacking the media! After they tried to destroy Mr. Jackson with the FAL$E 1993 Allegations. This is Michael's most heart-felt album & definitely one of my favorites. The album still sold 18 Million Copies (36 Million Disks) worldwide.

This album mixes anger for injustice, racial equality, saving the planet and love. It is a truly wonderful album & Mike expands his musical abilities by producing the whole album and playing most of the instruments on the album.

5 out of 5 stars Past, Present, and Future in the past........2007-05-14

This was a great album when it came out and it still makes good listening today. I admit to being a bit biased on this because I listened to this one a lot in the seventies. This is the album that set the mold for many future Al Stewart albums with a collection of often historical story songs. It stands up pretty well.

4 out of 5 stars Great second half.......2006-12-19

WHEN THIS WAS AN LP, NO ONE PLAYED THE FIRST SIDE.

Released in 1974, this is Al Stewart's fifth album, depending on how you are counting. It is 42 minutes long and the transition to CD is very good.

This album had two killer tracks, the 8 minute Roads To Moscow and the 9 minute Nostradamus. In between those 2 songs was the very good 3 minute Terminal Eyes, which reminds of the Beatles Come Together or I Am the Walrus, but not quite as wierd.

The first side of the album consisted of some boring, tedious songs. It seems like Al Stewart is at his worst when he sings about the Navy (just like Lord Granville on the Year of the Cat).

This was one of those LP's where you played only one side. You listened to the other once, and would never play it again. There were many like that in rock history, like Iron Butterfly's In-A-Godda-Da-Vida or Rare Earth's Get Ready.

5 out of 5 stars "Roads to Moscow" is a masterpiece, but Bruce K. got it wrong!.......2006-09-12

It will be impossible for me to take any review Bruce Kendall writes seriously ever again after reading his review of Al Stewart's masterpiece, "Roads to Moscow" from his first purely historical album, "Past, Present and Future." In his review, Mr. Kendall tells us that the song is about a "soldier in Nepolean's army" who is "captured by Russian soldiers and sent to a prison camp in Siberia"...unbelievable. Did you even bother to listen to the record, Bruce? Clearly not. The album, with the exception of the last track, "Nostradamus" explores each decade of the twentieth century (up to it's writing in the early 1970's) from Al's unique historical perspective. "Roads to Moscow," in Al's own words, the heaviest researched song he has written with historical record taken from at least 50 books, takes place more than two hundred years after the Nepoleonic Wars! Were there Tiger tanks in Nepolean's day, Bruce? Probably not. The song documents not a soldier in Nepolean's army, but a Russian soldier who has fought on the Russian front in WWII for four years and finally experiences the dream of marching into Berlin as Hitler's army is at last defeated. Thinking he is going home now that the war is over, he is taken from his comrades and interrogated over his capture and release by the Nazi's years earlier. As he explains to the KGB that he got a "lucky break," he realized that they do not believe him as his train continues on and on, presumably to Siberia. I wonder if the Bolsheviks had Siberian prison camps in the first half of the 19th century...?
How can a guy get it so very wrong? One listen to this exceptional track clearly clues the listener into the time period and circumstance of the story. I cannot believe that you ever listened to this record Bruce, and if you did you should be ashamed of yourself for writing a review as wreckless as this. It is clear that you simply "made this up", perhaps after listening to the first 30 seconds of the song, or more likely, bought your information from some college term paper web site, the kind that cause their customers to flunk out of school. Sadly, people including myself have relied on your reviews to make buying decisions. This shows us that you are nothing but a fraud and should not be allowed to participate in this forum ever again.

5 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Musical Gem.......2006-08-07

I first heard this album in 1974 and I've been a fan of Al Stewart's music ever since.

The best known tracks are "Roads To Moscow" and "Nostradamus" which both got some FM air play in the 70s and established Al Stewart's name among a small cult following before his 1976 album "Year Of The Cat" earned him a Top 10 spot.

Al Stewart is a great songwriter who always comes up with great lyrics. He also has a strong interest in historical subjects and that interest often finds its way into his songs.

"Nostradamus" is about the 16th French seer whose visions of the future have been the subject of countless books, articles and documentaries.

"Roads To Moscow" is about a nameless Russian soldier in WWII who is captured by the Germans, escapes, makes his way back to Russian lines and is treated as a spy and/or a traitor because he was captured and survived. The Soviet political commissars send him to a prison camp in Siberia. It's a great song; read your own interpretations into the story.

Bottom line: this album is a musical gem which never achieved the recognition it deserved. It deserves your attention; buy it.

For right-minded buyers of the reissued Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack, the odds of disappointment are about as remote as Miss Piggy's chances with Kermit. If you loved the movie, you will love the loopy mayhem of the Muppet Brass Buskers ("Good King Wenceslas"), the cartoonish malice of the black-hearted misanthropes Marley & Marley ("Marley & Marley"), and the hope-swollen harmonies of Tiny Tim and Family ("Bless Us All"), Muppeted here to hilariously humble effect. If, on the other hand, your interest in this disc has more to do with its inclusion in the way-narrow Christmas-record-for-kids category--if the spirit of the season doesn't extend, for you, to the magic of the Muppets--you may want to keep browsing, as it's a soundtrack first (overture, instrumentals, and all) and a Christmas CD second. That's not to suggest you're stuck with an un-fun disc should it land on your holiday stack without a prior screening, though. Miles Goodman's score sweeps and inspires, and certain tracks--"One More Sleep 'til Christmas" and "Fozziwig's Party"--are future classics. (Note to the right-minded: After a misstep on the original release, Martina McBride's version of "When Love is Gone" is back.) -Tammy La Gorce

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Finally released.......2007-05-23

If your Christmas isn't complete without listening to this music, this CD is a must buy. The audio quality is excellent despite the age of the film. Michael Cain and Belle come out crystal clear in their solo and ensemble work. The surprise of this album is the inclusion of two tracks (one by Beaker and Bunson and one by Scrogge's primary school teacher) that are not in the film. They are fun but unexpected. I could only ask that the CD last longer with such beautiful traditional music, but alas there is no more music to include. Maybe they could market Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island together in the future?

    5 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2007-02-14

4 out of 5 stars Holiday Classic with Kermit , Miss Piggy, and Michael Caine.......2007-01-12

The score from The Muppet Christmas Carol is full of the spirit of Christmas. The familiar story by Dicken's is given new life with the great score (mostly written by Paul Williams). Great energy is relayed to the listener as Scrooge (Michael Caine)is painted in words and as Bob Cratchet (Kermit the Frog) sings with his co-workers 'One More Sleep 'Til Christmas'. The love song duet between Scrooge (Michael Caine) and his fiancee during a ghostly vision brings great pathos to the character. For lovers of the Muppets and or Dickens, there is no better way to enter into the spirit of the season.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-08

These are some of the most heartwarming songs. I even find myself singing the ones about poor Mr. Scrooge.

but I do hope for another creative HIP-HOP explosion that LONS were part of from '88 to '96.

Fun and creative is what most people wrote about this. I would say they are about . . . 100% right. I, also, wondered what happened to the trio since this album was so original.

I came to watch a documentary on the group or Busta Rhymes on MTV or Vh1 about 2 years ago. If you noticed it, Q-tip said that there was eerie feeling when LONS would be rapping. ' a very competitive, or extremely competitive spirit between them.

I think it was just strife or over the top competition that drove them apart.

Besides that, the samples, beats, and rapping flows(or styles) all flowed into one unit . . . for each and every song.

    ' a good album. ' a classic? . . . Well, we will see in about 40 years.

    later,

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THOSE CLASSICS THAT SHOULD'VE GOTTEN MORE SHINE.......2007-03-04

you know, i loved LONS. some i know say this here i wack. what i hear though is hip hop with a bit of a twist. i love especially CASE OF THE PTA, FEMININE FATT, SOBB STORY, INTERNATIONAL ZONE COASTER, SOUND OF THE ZEEKERS, and WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE. i wore this out when i had it. if you are into finding that good ole hip hop stuff, this is fo ya.

    5 out of 5 stars Criminally slept-on...a fantastic classic.......2007-01-02

I can't believe that "A Future Without a Past" is as unknown and underappreciated as it is. I can count on one hand the number of rap albums that are as consistently funny and entertaining as this one. This album is simply phenomenal throughout. The three MCs here are fantastic. Busta Rhymes would of course go on to be the quick-lipped apocalyptic mainstream MC, but here he is a hilarious, immature teen. Dinco Dean carries the weight as the one who gels Busta with the equally zany and funny Charlie Brown, whose yelling and chanting make him the one who really stands out. Cut Monitor Milo makes the beats, along with an assorted group of other producers, and raps on occasion. LONS are a joy to listen to because they celebrate youth, and are quite capable of tackling issues on the youth of the world amidst their crazy humor. The production is excellent, using samples and creative instrumentals to make a unique yet simple sound that doesn't sound slightly dated fifteen years later. I can't think of another group that has so much character and charisma. "A Future Without a Past" is a concept album that follows Busta, Dinco, and Charlie through a day at school. These guys have hysterical thoughts about the goings on at the high school, and I laugh frequently whenever I listen to this. This album is a must-have for any fans of 90s classic hip hop.

The skits are part of what make the concept work so well and make the album so much fun. Beginning with "Homeroom," which has the guys skirting into school amid some sort of riot, and the classic song "Case of the PTA" plays the school theme perfectly, poking fun at the school system over a legendary production with an infectious chorus. "Too Much on My Mind" allows the MCs to voice the problems of their teenage lives, with a horn-laden hook. "What's the Pinocchio's Theory?" is crazy and hilarious, anchored by Charlie Brown. Despite its standard fun, "Just When You Thought It Was Safe..." displays a social consciousness that only the best MCs had in 1991. After a visit to the "Lunchroom" is the incredible "Sound of the Zeekers," a crazy song with multiple guest rappers. "Sobb Story" is great, and "Feminine Fatt" is a funny song where Busta speaks happily of heavyset women. I love "Transformers," and "Afterschool" the LONS ask for role models on "Show Me a Hero." "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" is infectious and fast, as is the well-produced and executed "International Zone Coaster." The self explanatory "Teachers, Don't Teach Us Nonsense" precedes Busta's hilarious "My Dingaling." The album closes with the perfect "Where Do We Go From Here?"

For as much success as Busta Rhymes would later find, in my opinion this is by far his greatest accomplishment. "A Future Without a Past" is amazing. It's unbelievably funny, musically catchy, and simply entertaining as the best hip hop is. Fans of A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and even Brand Nubian or Wu-Tang should pick this up without thinking twice, and they will see that LONS are a group as unique and enjoyable as any. This is an album that never received its due respect but is a must-have for any hip hop fan.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Brown was the man........................2006-10-31

Charlie Brown & Busta were the stars of LONS. My beef is Charlie could have been as big as Busta. I'm not sure what happened but C Brown was a star.

Dam! Music I played back in 91 while in 7th grade is like old school rap classics now. I like this albume still today in 2006. Dare I say it but it's a fun album. I mean I know hip-hop now you got to be a "THUG" and all. This album just brings back good memories for me back in a time in 7th and 8th grade early 90s. The beats on this album still play to me and aren't out dated. For example, I brought Ice Cubs' 'The Predator' album just for the 'Check Yo Self' track but all the other song beats on that album are mad out dated. I don't know if your a young cat reading this or someone like me around 29, but this LP is just that good stuff! If you weren't around in 91 you might not be feeling me, but tracks for example; Feminat Fatt, Sobb Story, Show Me a Hero, were just my songs along with many more on this LP. I don't know, I just feel those good beats and the creativty on this album, still today!

The whole cd is great I remember when the group first came out
because I was around back then as a teenager and my friends and I use to hang with them before they became famous and they were just starting out. I am so proud of them because lisa was one of the first real hispanics to make it big in the cross over. Everything you here now is garbage back then music was real music
they sang about sex and everything but they did it in a way that was not nasty just well sexy.

5 out of 5 stars A great blast from the past.......2004-02-17

This CD brings back memories of a different day in Hip Hop and R&B.... the music was fun, it made you want to sing along, to dance. The lyrics were about love (Lost in Emotion), relationships (All Cried Out), life (I Wonder If I Take You Home), and succeeding (Little Jackie Wants to Be A Star).

I can remember when "I Wonder If I Take You Home" was THE song. Everyone had it blasting on their car stereos, their boom boxes on the beach in summer, singing it down the hallways in school. You could say that about a lot of songs by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. Unfortunately, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam aren't making music anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Trip down memory lane! I love this CD!.......2003-03-20

If you were a teenager in the '80's (like I was) then you will remember Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. And you will want to buy this CD! It has all the songs we Lisa Lisa fans love, like "I Wonder If I Take You Home", "Can You Feel the Beat, and even later classic cuts like "Let the Beat Hit Em'! I love this CD! It is like taking a pleasant trip down memory lane, and you don't want it to end. I highly recommend this CD!

        Album Description

After living in Austin for nearly three years, Marc Bianchi moved into a little house in the middle of nowhere in Northern California and began recording this release. In extreme isolation and creative re-evaluation, the content of Her Space Holiday's sound and meaning became much broader than previous works. Short stories starring characters have replaced short-sided, one person perspectives. Rather than feeling like you're looking into the life of one songwriter, the listener walks away with a sense of getting a deeper glimpse into the world around them.

4 out of 5 stars Marc Pulls out of his nosedive - Enough about "Manic Expressive"!.......2006-05-20

Why do most reviewers have to blab about Manic Expressive?! Most of the comments show no attention was truly paid to his new lyrics, while they go on and on about "His lyrics are about being depressed/He's sold out and catchy now". For one thing, if you had opened your brain/ears at all- Marc IS NOT depressed anymore, nor is the reason he's poppier now strictly due to trying to get airplay. The lyrics clearly reveal this: He's "seen the light". He was a human on his knees with pain, and he has ended up on top- Something most people would admire (as few people seem to learn the positive messages from negative experiences). He pulled out of his nosedive. He started his career heading into heavier and heavier depression, lovers hurting him, etc. On "Young Machines", the love of his live screws him over, and his mother dies. This new album is all about love, the truth, how we are all playing blind in society, etc. Marc Bianchi is now focusing his career on pointing out all of the bull$h!t that he used to live by, and encouraged. He doesn't protect or hide anything- and that is an honesty SO rare in a modern musical artist that I am amazed at him. I find the whole obsession with "I prefer mopy, depressed music the best" pretty lame actually- life is hard, why dwell on it over and over? Marc's revealing, exploring and sharing things now that most people would be afraid to. I commend him!
I will agree, however, that this album at first came across as not so good (Too "catchy"), but after repeated listening and actually paying attention- he's right on track, and is quite ahead of many artists right now.

1 out of 5 stars Her Space Tragedy.......2006-04-14

If home is where you hang yourself, then Her Space Holiday - take your own advice. I agree fully with the reviewer before me regarding lyrics. They are absolutely absurd and wow, the woh's of being an indie artist. What is this, the Marshall Mathers LP? Get over yourself. I used to really like Her Space Holiday. All the earlier material from The Astronauts Are Sleeping (vol1 & 2), etc. is brilliant. I think the reviews should be a little hard, because of the many successes and potentials that have surrounded Marc. Manic Expressive at this rate will be the record HSH is known for. The Past Presents the Future seems to have no continuity or flow, almost like fragments. I want to just slay myself when I hear Weight Of The World. Honestly, there is not one good song. At least on Young Machines the musical compositions were sound - this is rubbish.

        2 out of 5 stars Flush!.......2006-02-26

I wanted to like this cd so badly. I gave this several listens and still could not begin to even start tolerating this release. I liked Manic Expressive, I even liked the Young Machines but this one was a bit of a stretch. His lyrics are garbage, don't kid yourself otherwise, I overlooked it in Young Machines but this is inexcusable. Someone needs to tell Marc to stop writing about the pains of being a musician because its not relatable, and quite frankly if you can't handle the criticism stop putting out records.

5 out of 5 stars The Past Presents the Future...literally, an evolution of Her Space Holiday.......2005-10-06

I can't think of a better title for this album, since it is very evident that Her Space Holiday is moving on from their established sound and themes of deep desperation, loneliness and love. Luckily they do this without losing the personal connection that is so much a part of what makes Her Space Holiday one of my favorite bands. Few people have come close to putting such true and honest feelings into such beautiful lyrics as Marc Bianchi, with the help of his laptop.

His past albums seem to have been centered on love affairs, drug abuse, and always deep depression. This album seems to move into a brighter light, yet keeping with serious subject matter. Bianchi's lyrics now touch on powerful themes, such as his own exploitation of his feelings on his album and acceptance of sexual orientation differences in America.

If you have listened to The Young Machines, this album is the perfect follow-up. If you are new to Her Space Holiday, be sure to check this out, and all of his other albums, especially the amazing Manic Expressive.

I cannot stress how personal a connection all of Her Space Holiday's albums make, and this one is no different.

2 out of 5 stars The Past Doesn't Present the Future.......2005-10-04

It's more or less a discarding of past accomplishments in favor of future experimentation with the mainstream ear. "The Past Presents the Future" could be called the bigger, more flamboyant brother of "The Young Machines," which I'd call HSH's first stab at reaching out to the pop-friendly, radio, mainstream public.

While I believe that Marc Bianchi's greatest achievement ever was the emotionally powerful "Manic Expressive," threads and tiny tidbits of said album do exist within "TPPTF." However, each track is highly lyrical, like "...Machines," and terribly difficult to swallow. We all understand that Marc is depressed, but does he have to be so forward with it?

"Manic Expressive" is an atmospheric trip through dreamy electro-soundscapes touched with beautiful string arrangements. Vocals are not overdone, as they are carried by the music itself. HSH's last two albums, do not follow suit.

Musically, this album is neither catchy, nor appealing. Too much time has been spent on making the lyrics the stand-out strength and even that's annoying. His whispery voice, though perfectly fitting for an album such as...oh..."Manic Expressive," is a headache when coupled with awfully-mixed electronic pop that just isn't very fun to listen to.

If anything, "The Young Machines" and "The Past Presents the Future" are the two launch pads in which Marc can break out of obscurity and finally attain the popularity, notoriety and money that he apparently wants. I've lost a lot of faith in him since, I'll say it again, "Manic Expressive," and I just don't see any change ahead. The slope is steep when you lose your touch.

Strangely enough, though, even though I'm disappointed with HSH these past couple of years, both said albums are still better than what you'd hear on the radio or through scanning the Billboard Top 500. When a man sets the bar so high ("Manic Expressive") and then misses his mark so horribly ("TYM" and "TPPTF"), you can't help but think that the good days are behind us and we're in for a tiresome and depressing period ahead. ..but deep within both releases are tiny remnants of what Marc is truly capable of.

It's just sad you have to weed through the garbage to get to the treasure.

If you liked "The Young Machines," then by all means, pick this up. I'd even venture to say that if you enjoyed disc one of "Home is Where You Hang Yourself," you *might* like this one. If you were captivated by "Manic Expressive" and are expecting more of the same, run the hell away in the opposite direction...quick!
