4 out of 5 stars Romp around selection.......2006-07-24

this is a pretty funky selection - sleek scratches, jump-up rhythms, old-skool bass. being extremely catchy, it is ideal for parties, b-boy sessions or daft subwoofer drive-by exbibits ;)
if you don't expect a demanding idm or deep soulful lyrics, you can't be disappointed.
you'll be surprised at the number of familiar motifs or beats (both poached from and borrowed by other songs)

4 out of 5 stars Techno meets Hip-Hop.......2001-02-25

First of all, this IS NOT a hip-hop album; it's rather a dance (techno) album with a hip-hop flavor in it. It's been produced by a well known hip-hop artist Akhenaton (of the group IAM). And it's some kind of DJ scratching on Techno beats. Actually it's kind of cool to listen to because it shows how talented those DJs are.

However if you want to listen to French rap, I would advice groups like IAM, NTM, Assassin, La Cliqua, Fonky Family, La Brigade and solo efforts from MC Solaar, Passi, Akhenaton(IAM), Shurik'n(IAM), Fabe; DJ albums from Cut Killer, Kheops(IAM)... France is know for being the 2nd country of Hip-Hop after USA. And they have some great collabos with US artists that are worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and Funky.......2001-01-27

If you've never heard rap in french before this CD can be quite humerous. At first, it made me laugh. But the musicians really know how to "scratch" and they get a great sound. It's real easy to groove to and is fun to listen to.

        5 out of 5 stars Stunningly astonishing..............2004-08-17

Bova's immensely layered but darkly ambient synthesizers and Haas eerie
sampled percussion and sounds creates an amazing audio world.

I also have listened to these discs to death and feel this duo is HUGELY
underrated (and also sadly unknown) to most of the world.

I highly recommend "Nothing Lasts" as it included the contents of both
"Decoder" and "Security" as well as a series of untitled ambient bonus
        tracks.

The best I can describe this music is if the musicians of 1970s-1980s
Tangerine Dream had access to modern synthesizer equipment, kept
the avante garde aspects plus the melodicism from the 1979-1980
group but kept things darkly minor or meditative.

Highly recommended. The last time I e-mailed Mr. Bova he mentioned
that he had hoped that Mr. Haas and he would reconvene for another C7
production but that was several years back - I suspect stuff this good
just doesn't see the light of day very often. Get it while you can, it's an
        uncanny classic.

4 out of 5 stars A total "must have" for your collection!.......1999-05-12

This is a 2 CD set that contains the albums "Decoder", and "II" together. I've played it so many times, I think the laser on my player has probably burned through it already. Total thinking, moving, and sometimes emotionally releasing music. Ambient, but melodic. The rythms will stay in your head for weeks. No hip-hop here, just great lines, and rythms. The Suspicious Shaman, and Ladder of Lights are the best. I'm searching for more like this, but I can't find it! Did Jeff or Alex do anything else?

        3 out of 5 stars Perpetual Resurgence.......1998-11-27

This double CD will undoubtably get anybody into the "flow". A smart mix of Techno drum and bass beats smoothed out into a tranquil state of hip-hop.

          5 out of 5 stars POWERFUL.......2003-05-30

This CD is a high quality collection of sounds that span funk / ambient/ dance/ trance genres
It is well worth a listen to just for the high production values
Great driving music, really gets you redlining .....
A little like The kumba mela experiment (YOUTH et al)

3 out of 5 stars What Were They Thinking?.......2000-11-10

The range of stlyes on this album can be a little too much for fans of straight-forward trance and techno, as if the band was trying really hard to be new and avant-garde. I would call the album successful, however, in that the few really good songs like Seven Theories of Human Nature and Riding on a White Rabbit, the latter a powerfull yet standard psy-trance song that sounds unsettlingly out of place, make up for the remaining motley arrangement of songs. If you like alternative techno with a touch of humor (check out Do You Wanna Do It complete with sampling from Beavis and Butthead), you may enjoy this album. For you straight-ahead psy-trancers, you'd probably do well to avoid this one.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Awesome MCs.......2006-03-24

These guys are basically brilliant at rapping. Really fast, clear and to the beat, some great talent in this group. I have to agree with the review below that some of the beats are not quite as good as the mc's, but still not bad at all. They sound so distinct that its well worth buying. A lot of energy, i can imagine impressive live, hopefully i will have the chance to see them.

          3 out of 5 stars There's Better But There's A Lot Worse.......2005-03-09

This album leaves me with very mixed feelings. I really want to like it but just don't really. The sound is good, reasonably original and oddly compelling samples laid over a crisp but basically boring set of baselines with adequately talented rhymes and scratching courtesy of Mr. Thing, but it never really takes off. The basic formula of each song doesn't really take it anywhere, it just hovers on the same level for minutes at a time, and it's the scratching or a lucky mid-song breakdown that usually relieves the listener from sleeping. Luckily, this CD doesn't ventures into my own personal hell of Psychoticpop-hophatredland like so many other recent "rap" acts but it treads the line sometimes. There are a lot of "I'm a rebel, smoking sensemillia, baddest MC you've ever heard" lyrics seeded throughout but they are off-set, line for line, with socially aware and intelligent views. It just doesn't come off as well as the Non-Prophets. The East Indian rapping, making annoying noises style of Skit-Slam, the "ning-ning-ning-ning-woy" specifically reminiscent of Snow and generally of Shaggy, doesn't help their cause too much. I just can't get into it, or any of the MC's for that matter, which is sad because one can't choose his/her voice any more than you can choose your skin colour, but the effort is highly respectable. The beats remind me of Slum Village insofar as a standard, flat snare permeates throughout the album tap for tap with simply constructed, constantly repeating basslines and a light string or classic funk loop. For a group trying to raise awareness and open minds, they push no boundaries, take no unexpected stands, and is ultimately dry though well produced and catchy. Their message is pretty much lost in the style it was recorded.

5 out of 5 stars CIPHER FOR LIFE!!!!.......2004-02-07

Truly the best UK hip hop group. for most rappers their follow up albums are rubbish compared to their previous but as for this one, what can i say, (LYRICS GALORE). first time i heard phi life cipher was on HERBAHOLICS, where life rips it. life is definately the best uk hip hop artist, hands down. (sorry to dissapoint any black twang fans LOL). Every tune on this album is bangin, im more for the lyrics but the beats are ill too. (nappa your the man). This album shows that the UK does have talent. im going as far to say that phi life cipher can limb for limb go up against the many US artists and put up a good battle. keep up the work. the underground scene is there backin.
