Amazon.com essential recording
Purcell fans will delight in this collection of 30 of his 85 secular songs. Barbara Bonney, singing with ease and controlled fervor, steals the recording with her endearing sound and impeccable musicianship. Soprano Susan Gritton brings a more dramatic perspective, singing with zest and a little edge that almost, but never quite, grates. Sometimes, however, she vibrates mildly out of control. Tenors Charles Daniels and Roger Covey-Crump sing with grace, joviality, and tenderness, but both are a little shallow throughout the bottom. Countertenor James Bowman occasionally stumbles with intonation, but always lands standing upright. This buffet of various voices captivates the listener's attention span, totally avoiding potential monotony. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Purcell stole my heart.......2001-02-08
Alas, with the help of phenomenally expressive singers on this CD, Purcell has stolen my heart. I listened to this CD a few times then immediately emptied my pocketbook to the nearest consort putting on a Purcell concert. Such poverty is love.

Not brilliant, but then it is a single - more like 3.5 stars.......2002-04-25
With four songs and 40 minutes of music (well, 35 if you take into account that there are 2 versions of Through Her Eyes) you really cant't complain considering it is only the price of your average single.
The actual song Through Her Eyes is alright but not brilliant. I don't like pop sounding stuff much (being a metalhead and all) but I did like Another Day on Images and Words. Give it a good listen and you'll appreciate it. Can't see the point in wasting a track by having 2 versions of the song though, considering that one is simply the other with extra bits added on. What I don't get is that this song is not really representative of what the band is about. I mean, I'd rather listen to their pop music than most of the stuff that's out there, but if you think this single is what Dream Theatre are about then no, they're not. And if you only like strictly metal you'll hate this song.
The live songs are good and the band are incredibly tight musically. However, LaBrie sounds [terrible]. He continually misses notes, sings off key, cannot reach the heights he could on the album, sounds tired and his voice lacks the edge it has in the studio. That said, the actual music is very well performed.
Home is pretty good. For a 14 minute long song it doesn't seem to do as much as I'd hoped but it is good.
However, it is the medley, When Images And Words Unite, that is worth the (pretty small) price alone. Pull Me Under (where Mike Portnoy doubles his drum speed in places), Under A Glass Moon, A Fortune In Lies, Only A Matter Of Time and Take The Time are squished into one 16 minute long headbanging track. Absolutely superb.
All in all, it doesn't offer as much as it could, but it is a single not an album and if you can't afford to splash out on the live album but would like to hear the band live, then this is probably worth it.
Save your money..........2002-01-17
As a big DT fan, I've got to steer you toward better recordings if you are interested in the content of this CD. This CD was released prior to the "Live Scenes from New York" CD and DVD, and I was hungry to hear the live versions contained on this disc. Unfortunately, James LaBrie's strained and tired voice nearly destroys an otherwise desireable recording. I find myself cringing as he drifts out of tune and simply misses the notes during the peak of 'Home'. I don't understand why the band chose to publish this recording because it is certainly not representative of their collective talents. Go buy the full live set on "Live Scenes.." instead - you'll be glad that you did.
The Miracle.......2001-05-12
The best dream ballad I have ever heard(after space-dye vest,of course). This CD contains the great "through her eyes" song,I think James LaBrie had sung very very well on this song that he has never done.Home-live is great(of course) and ,after listening this song,to me,dream theater is the best live group in the world. There is no reason to not get this CD..Don't forget that,The Dream Singles always include much more than you have dreamed!Highly recommended...
Important addition to your collection.......2000-09-22
Only a band as prolific as Dream Theater can release a CD "single" with over forty minutes of material, all of it good, on the disc. This disc is a good representation of the band - it has one of their slower, softer songs on it, along with impressive live versions of their more typically progressive songs. The power of the band resides in their ability to diversify every song, whether lyrically or musically. A msut have for die-hards, and highly recommended for casual fans as well.
Scene's "Through Her Eyes".......2000-08-04
With any Dream Theater album/recording/etc., for their fans, it will always be a worth while purchase. The single for "Through Her Eyes" is, of course, no exception. However, I feel that it is probably the only piece from Dream Theater I could live without.
It's main drawback is a lack of any new music. I was hoping that a single might produce a few non-"Scenes From A Memory" based b-sides. I'm curious to hear what else Jordan Rudess will contribute to the band. Alas, what we get are two versions of "Through Her Eyes." One is practically identical to the album version, just minus the opening female vocals. The second includes a nice, but rather out-of-place saxaphone solo by Spyro Gyro's Jay Beckstein.
Another question I have is, of all the songs off of "Scenes From A Memory," why make this one the single? "Through Her Eyes" is far from one of the album's leading tracks. "Fatal Tragedy" and the epic "Home" seem to be two more likely candidates.
Our other offerings are two live tracks from the first leg of the Metropolis 2000 tour. The first is the aforementioned "Home." "Home" is the centerpiece of "Scenes" and easily one of DT's best works. The live version, however, leaves something to be offered. To keep with the album's sound of the song, played live "Home" is slowed down, and it feels it. The tempo is sluggish and feels like your just plodding along through it.
The best and only reason to own this is for "When Images and Word Unite." A medley of five songs from the first two Dream Theater albums. Easily, more enjoyable of a romp than "Home" and it's nice to hear James LaBrie's verison of old tracks.
If you're bent on owning all of Dream Theater's works, pick this up. Otherwise, stick with "Scenes From A Memory" and see DT live. It will make up for not buying it.

Customer Reviews:
Don't quit your full-time job!.......2006-04-27
To have called this an amateurish work would be an insult to amateurs everywhere! I cringed at the wave of embarrasement that crept over me while listening to this middle schoolish production. It is my prayer that the producers of this "musical" aren't adolescents as I would feel bad for denigrating their first attempt at theater. Hopefully whoever produced this inferior production has learned from the school of hard knocks and has found another full-time job! - Just don't include this work on your resume!!
Stereotypical disgrace.......2006-04-26
This "musical" is an amateurish attempt to portray a real story. But the characters are so poorly fleshed out and the music is so amateurish, it falls flat.
More troubling is the fake Yiddish accent put on by the characters that give it an historical distortion, but also seems almost anit-semetic in its portrayal of whiny, negative women who are based on every stereotype available.
The writers obviously have no sense of Jewish history and no fear of appearing foolish in their attempt to identify real events.
Oy--this is a stereotypical disgrace.
anti-Semitic drivel.......2006-04-24
This CD is an offense to anyone with religious sensibilities. The mother of the Virgin Mary is portrayed as a nagging, stereotypical Jewish harpie, complete with a hokey (and historically incorrect) Yiddish accent. One wonders if the sequel will include the 3 Wise Men, with Baltazar tap dancing and eating watermelon. Save your money!
A new perspective.......2004-06-09
This musical is funny as well as poignant. It made these "holy" women seem real and gave me a new perspective on the Christmas story.

Locatelli is, of course, an exceptionally tasty sheep's milk cheese related to Romano, but he was also a very important and talented composer of violin music. Later generations looked back at him as the "Baroque Paganini," and his music abounds in technical difficulties and flashy writing for the soloist. Of course, instrumental virtuosity alone doesn't make a great composer, but in this collection of concertos and orchestra suites we see that the challenge of writing other types of music didn't faze Locatelli composer one bit. The so-called "Theatrical Introductions" are what we now call "overtures" or "suites," consisting largely of dance movements arranged in a pleasing sequence. The whole collection is expertly performed by this excellent "authentic" instrument group. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Delightful light baroque; a great find.......2007-01-31
I stumbled on these pieces by hearing one on the radio, loving it, and buying this CD. These are bright, inventive, concerto-style compositions in a style very reminiscent of Vivaldi. From the first bars of the first track, you know you're in for a treat. The first CD contains six "Introduttioni Teatrali", or theater introductions, which were apparently played before theater productions. They are in typical baroque concerto style and might better be called concerti for orchestra. The second CD contains six concerti with varying numbers of movements.
The playing is excellent, full of life and energy. The recording quality is fine, and the hall has a full, rich sound. After listening to this CD a few times, the pieces feel like old friends I've known all my life. If you like Vivaldi concerti, I'm sure you'll enjoy these.
