Well Done Collection of Vivaldi Concertos.......2006-10-21

Looking for an inexpensive but well done Vivaldi concerto collection? One that includes the Four Seasons? One that has concertos for seven instruments? One that has three beautiful choral pieces? One that includes likes of such greats as Pepe Romero, Academny of St.Martin inthe Fields, Heinz Holliger among others?

This is it then. Especially enjoy the mandolin concertos (two of them here) and the Two Cellos, as well as Holliger in Oboe work. Also, the Cum Sancto Spiritu is powerful and shows range of this tireless composer who influenced so many and still does. This is nice for someone looking to add a litte Vivaldi to their playing collection. Sheer enjoyment!

Beatiful string instrument recital.......2002-12-03

This Naxos "Early Music" release features Christopher Wilson on vihuela which is a string instrument similar to the lute. This CD contains music from two early Spanish composers where the vihuela was all the rage in court circles. Both cmposers wrote in the traditional fantasia, but their styles are completely different. The liner notes state that Milan who was a professional musician wrote in a style which seemed to be improvisational but was in fact well planned while Narvaes seemed to stretch the range of the instrument taking it to new levels.
To my ears without even a hint of knowledge of music, both composers have created equally fascinating and beautiful works. This CD is not just a musical rarity of interest only to people who love early music but should belong in every collection. The melodies are hauntingly beautiful. I have played this CD so much that I practically have it memorized.

Volume 1 of Vivaldi's complete sacred music features the impressive if less familiar of the two settings of the Gloria, RV 588, the second setting of the vespers psalm Dixit Dominus, and Nulla in mundo pax sincera, used with striking effect in the film Shine. With texts divided between soloists and chorus, both compositions bear all the hallmarks of Vivaldi's finest choral works: festive brilliance, dramatic changes of mood and texture, and passages of aching melancholy. Conductor Kevin Mallon founded the Aradia Ensemble in 1996, and has already made 20 highly regarded recordings with the group for Naxos.

Could be a personal bias.......2007-01-15

Is it me, or are modern performances of Baroque music always inclined to be driven at much too high a tempo? This recording is symptomatic of this modern "disease." Not every single track suffers from this malady, but the joyous, usually quick tempo'd numbers are excessively so in my opinion, which annoys me. It's like a speed contest to finish the movement in the fastest time to date. Other than that, which I have returned CD's for in the past, a respectable recording.

The vocals are a cross between Sixty Watt Shamen & Rush. The music is a cross between Kyuss & The Obbessed. The magic click that seems to happen between the musicians involved here is a cross between Merlin the great and Gandolf the wizard. This is stoner rock at it's best and you will be hard pressed to find someone who has given this album a good listen and didn't instantly love it. The guitars are the standard stoner rock fuzz, but seem to have a groove to them that is a cut above the norm. If you are a stoner rock fan, I'm sure this is all old news. However, this is also one of the few stoner rock albums that I think could crossover into fans of Black Label Society to Soundgarden as well. Hell, I think this could even appeal to fans of Soilwork to Slayer, but I've been wrong before.

The first thing I noticed about this CD is it had 2 songs at 9:00 minutes and one at 8 which scared me a little. The surprising thing was that none of them seemed that long. The whole CD from start to finish enthralled me. Jadds voice reminds me of an early Chris Cornell at times yet with his own unique style. Every song he sings is crystal clear yet with an edge to it.

You can hear so many influences its hard not to listen to it over and over to try to pick them all out. This has got to be one of the best all around Stoner-rock bands out there. The Guitars, Bass, and Drums all melt together yet have their own identity. The only downside to this CD is it is to short at only 6 tracks. It is apparent that every one of these guys has a passion for their music, which is a great thing to see nowadays. If you don't have this CD yet get it. You won't be sorry.

I thought I would give a real review of this CD, because I used to be a huge fan of Kyuss, the band that started the genre of music that this group belongs to. First off, there is absolutely nothing on this disc that makes you want to go back and hear it through again ...There are no hooks or melodies that make you want to play air guitar to or hum along to. It is just a slow, loud, chaotic mess. The drums are horrible...The vocals are out of place with this kind of music, and the bass is almost non existent. There are hundreds of bands that are playing this [type of rock] and there are(were) only about two or three that are truly great....

Spiritu's eponymous debut captures a hungry, well-rehearsed band whipping the grooves and riding them hard over the course of the three days this took to record. The lack of bells and whistles almost gives this CD a demo feel, though the sound is meaty enough to gelatinize your pancreas.

Jack Endino, the man who recorded and mixed this, has also worked with the likes of Soundgarden, Nirvana and Nebula. A perusal through the CD collection shows him as given "studio assistant" credit on Soundgarden's Louder Than Love from 1989. Louder Than Love is a hell of a good CD, and Spiritu is in some ways its spiritual kin. Both are groove-heavy, with nods to the atomic riffage of days of yore from the likes of Black Sabbath and earliest Led Zeppelin. Each band was slapped with a label it may or may not have cared for ("grunge" for Soundgarden, "stoner rock" for Spiritu), and certainly doesn't say enough about the band's art. And each CD is an accessible if embryonic sample of its respective band's potential.

The biggest departure between the two, though, is mood. Whereas Louder Than Love was dark as pitch (and occasionally darkly funny), Spiritu manages to shake the "doom" label that dogs some of the stoner rock bands by having some fun. Yeah, vocalist Jadd can wail like a poltergeist in a pressure cooker, but he comes off as a man on a mission, not a tortured soul. "Glorywhore" is all rock credo as Jadd sings, "We ain't tortured, no, we're reveling/Maybe that's why you wanna love us so bad." Even as he hails the names of the dead on highway crosses in "Slump," it's great fun to listen to the band halt the ubiquitous riffs ever-so-briefly while he sings, "Throw in your chips and let it ride/We're taking this one all the way to Mexico." And quoting "One Night in Bangkok" (from the musical Chess) near the end of "Fat Man in Thailand" is pretty doggone funny.

So no, Spiritu doesn't attempt to build a better mousetrap here. The band simply knows how to milk a good groove so that eight or nine minutes don't become a lesson in endurance. Give these guys a proper stretch in the studio and time to genuinely flex their musical muscles and they could certainly open a lot of eyes. And ears. - Reviewed by Brian Briscoe

Great starting point, but not much else........2000-03-14

Being a Vivaldi and Albinoni fan myself, many of my CD collections include many from these two composers. I was once new to this composer and this CD is a great way to to be introduced to the wonderful works that this once neglected genius has written. As one can see from the tracklist, it includes famed pieces such as the Four Seasons. In addition to the Four Seasons,this CD also includes Gloria, a genera that Vivaldi is not so famous for but nonetheless a magnificant track to listen. In short, as a (starter's kit) to Vivaldi, this is one of if not the best CD to have in one's collection. The only complain that I have about this CD is that it contains some movements of certain concertos rather than the whole concerto and thus as a later collection, this CD would probably not be a good buy. As a starting (being a first or second)CD to Vivaldi however, this is the CD to get. In addition, the booklet contains a historical timeline of around the period that Vivaldi lived which strengths my opinion that this CD is best targeted for a novince listener that knows almost nothing of Vivaldi's life rather than an experienced listener that knows somewhat of his life. Tracks I recomend are of course the Four Seasons, but keep in mind that each season on this CD is performed by a different ensemble, the guitar concerto and the flute concerto (the flute concerto is incomplete in this CD). Five stars would have been given solely on the basis of variety of the CD, but overall not very homogenous (ie., way too many performers in this CD-does not give the listener a chance a acclumate to a certain ensemble's style). My recommendation for anyone who is relatively new to Vivaldi is to buy this CD and if you like it, then branch out from here. If not, at least you can say that you own a Vivaldi CD. Thanks.
