So so good at guitar.......2007-07-19

Obviously every song has mind blowing guitar. The best being the end of Physical Love where Senor Hazel is playing some of the most intense guitar i've ever heard. The problem is that the guitar on that part is the least prominent instrument, but there is some sweet synth keyboard I think Bernie Worrell was playing his keyboard underwater. Anywho California Dreamin', Physical Love, and What about it? sell this cd. The "I want you (She's so heavy)" cover is fantastic and has a good little jam in between. Frantic Moment and So goes the story are odd, but who cares it's Eddie Hazel. For those of you who don't know Eddie Hazel is one of the greatest guitartists of all time, but unfortunately had a short life like many other musicians. Rest in P Eddie.
PS. There is quote that describes funk perfectly in the liner notes.

Great Guitar Thangs.......2006-12-09

This is a must have for funk fans. Eddie Hazel is a true genius on the lead guitar and never fully received his props. The guitar work on this album gives you an idea of what true guitar work is. The songs are for sure G. Clinton induced but, when you hear California Dreamin' or "I Want You", you are in for a true treat and experience. Buy this album! If you want to know real guitar, listen to Eddie "maggot Brain" Hazel!!!!

A TRUE GENIUS & LEGEND.......2006-12-07

EDDIE HAZEL- Let me start by saying I'm 53 yrs. old and still "FUNKIN"! I first heard Funkadelic around 1969-70. The song was "Mommy What's a Funkadelic". I knew right then & there I had heard the 3rd phase of funk, the first the god farther JB, the second being Sly. God, these were the most slammin brothers on the planet, and they featured one of the most(if not the slamminist guitarist I had ever heard. Next to Jimi Hendrix who in my opinion wasn't as smooth as this cat but was the god of guitar at that time. George Clinton had special gift for finding talented musical genuises and this was his first. The orignal cut of Maggot Brain is classical stuff, Truly this lp is classical, genius, magic that only happens once in a lifetime. A masterpiece & must have. Truly RIP EDDIE!!!

Jerry Butler has long been one of the best R&B singers in music. Here at last you get his best two albums
on 1 CD. 60 minutes of pure magic. Almost all the hits are here, Hey Western Union Man, Only The Strong
Survive, Moody Woman, What's The Use of Breaking Up and a Brand New Me. It is a great collection
that exemplifies his talent and skill as a great singer. It is well worth the purchase. My only negative
is would have been nice to include He Will Break Your Heart, Find Another Woman,
Time and Faith, and his last hit, Mr. Dream Merchant.

Great tune!.......2006-11-11

If only for Vehicle, it's worth having. A very mature tune for such young guys at the time.

A Tremendous "HORN-ROCK" Record that was Overshadowed.......2006-08-29

In the glory days of horn-driven rock bands, such as CHICAGO, B,S,and T, Chase, and Lighthouse, the "Ides of March" were probably the most underrated and least appreciated of all the bands in that genre. Originally, IDES of March was more of a sixties garage-band, based in the Chicago area. They even scored with a few hits when they were in their mid-teens!! ("You Wouldn't Listen" and "Rollercoaster" to mention a couple.) By 1969 they added some trumpets and a sax, and it was a whole new sound for them!! Vehicle was recorded in a radio broadcasting studio so the sound quality was going to be a mystery. However, the sound quality was just fine for a record recorded in 1970. Vehicle went on to be a monster hit but the LP went on to medium sales. Now, that being said, this album was one of the finest records of the early 70's. Each song is full of life and the ballads are beautiful such as "HOME". in which Jim Peterik
delivers a emotional message that sends shivers down one's spine. "Factory Band" is a fun rocker that gets your feet stomping, and that's followed by "The Sky is Falling", which really shows off the powerful horn section. "Wooden Ships", (the old C,S. and N song) finishes side one. The IDES version is even better than the original in my opinion. ( I know, How dare I say that against the legendary C,S, and N!!!) But, the Ides version is excellent! Side two features the excellent "Aire of Good Feeling" which definitely puts you in one. (It should have been the follow up hit, but rumour has it that WB wanted another Vehicle rip-off for a second single. That being "Superman" which is on their second album. "One Woman Man" is another beautiful ballad on this side. Jim Peterik's voice is so awesome and it is amazing that he was only 20 years old when he recorded this album!! Hey, if you like 70's horn rock, do yourself a favor and buy this one before it disappears forever. The LP went out of print and I was fortunate enough to buy an extra copy because my first one was worn out. Buy and enjoy!! This CD is a lot more than just VEHICLE. By the way, their second LP, "Common Bond" is fantastic too!! That is also still available.

Classic 60s dionne LP gets remastered!.......2007-05-24

When Rhino Records' specialty imprint, Rhino Handmade began releasing limited edition Dionne Warwick CDs of her 60s catalog, fans were thrilled. Deluxe packaging, copious notes, awesome sound, and TONS of extras. Well, they did about 4, promised more to come, and then... nothing. Little by little though, her rare out of print catalog has been trickling out.

Which brings us to the Collector's Choice batch, just out now. Pretty straight-forward, no frills or bonus tracks... but good sound and decent liner notes. Hey, I'm just happy they are putting more rarities in print. Only a few Dionne gems left to go now...

Here I Am is one of my faves of her work, finding her moving gradually into her sophisticated pop phase. There are lots of ballads, gentle bossa nova ditties and even a gospel-style track. The lyrics are clever, with a dark underside that belies the sunny melodies. Dionne finds the heart of those lyrics, elevating the precedings to art.

Although many dismiss her mid to late 60s era as easy-listening pop, I think it's incredible stuff. Dionne has the grit and soul to move you, no matter what style she sings in.

Warwick reissued! Again and again?.......2007-05-24

Warner continues to make money off the legendary diva's Scepter label material. I wonder how much has been made to date. Prior re-releases have
been reissued in the UK and Japan of this LP and her many others from the 60s. Seems like every time she has new material out, her former record label puts out her oldies to cash in on her yet again. HOW TACKY and GREEDY THAT IS!
