5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2006-03-14

I've got "Jab It In Your Eye" on tape, but I've got "First Water" on vinyl and have been searching for it on cd.Angel Air,who have released other Sharks cds, have no plans to put these out.Everyone contact them, show there is interest because I MUST HAVE IT!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars How can I find this on CD.......2006-01-24

Totally agree with everyone's comments. Used to have this on vinyl but lost it many years ago. Every couple of months I do a search to see if it around on CD yet. No avail. One day soon hopefully I will have success.

5 out of 5 stars an out of print classic.......2005-11-28

This is one cd that should be re-released. It sells for big money on E-Bay. The company that released this origanally could profit from this. Please let us see a remastered re-release.

5 out of 5 stars Jab it in your wallet!!.......2005-09-26

I've been wanting to get this CD for quite a while with no luck. I see that it is being offered for $147.50 "in good condition". I'll need to win a lottery first. This is one that I wish the label could re-release.

Sharks comes two decades after UFO's last meaningful hit, at a time when you'd think UFO would call it a day and raise a glass to the late '70s, when Lights Out and Obsession were huge and Strangers in the Night was being heralded as a landmark live album. But rock & roll junkies to a man, they simply cannot let it lie. And thank goodness for that, because Sharks is far from the pub-metal indulgence one might expect. Reuniting stalwarts Phil Mogg and Pete Way with old cohort Michael Schenker, as well as drum wizard Aynsley Dunbar, the album is witty, unruly, and possessed of a renegade spirit sorely lacking in most nu-metallers (a point raised by Mogg during "Someone's Gonna Have to Pay"). "Fighting Man" is a hard-stomping blues-rock, "Dead Man Walking" recalls Van Halen's take on "You Really Got Me," while "Outlaw Man" is a history-minded self-justification, complete with Schenker pyrotechnics and hilariously brazen lyrics ("I'm a rocker / I'm one big bone"). Best of all, though, is "Serenity." With its verses like an Old Testament rant and a beautiful chorus, it ranks with UFO's best work. --Dominic Wills

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Sharks doesn't have the teeth ..........2007-04-20

Sharks was the third of the Schenker "reunion" albums and it just isn't as strong of an album as Walk On Water or Covenant. If you are a fan of the band you will like it because it does have its moments, they are just too few to rate much more than average. Who knows why, but maybe Schenker had gotten bored by the time they did this one. The songs themselves are standard UFO, the problem is there are only a couple that truly jump out at you.

Song Highlights include: Outlaw Man, Deadman Walking, Shadow Dancer and Sea Of Faith.

If you are a fan of UFO, Sharks does deserve a place in your collection, just not at the top. Newer fans will want to start with many other albums from the group's huge catalog.

4 out of 5 stars Hidden Gems.......2007-03-08

As a UFO fan I like this album like all the rest. In truth this is probably the worst of the "Schenker" offerings and is musically and lyrically poorer than the other seven studio albums he appeared on. On the plus side it has freshness, good production and a greater variety of guitar sounds. As usual it opens well with a good rocker "Outlaw Man" featuring a bit of slide guitar. The ballad like "Serenity" also has its moments. Schenker obviously found some new toys and plays with more effects, sounding in part like a poor mans version of Billy Gibbons on "Someone's Gonna Have to Pay". There just isn't for me that usual flow in the song writing and soloing that you come to expect. I am also wondering if Phil Mogg had a bet with the other boys to see how many famous names he could drop in one album full of songs! Most of the other tracks are usual UFO formula and not particularly memorable or as good as previous efforts. The high point for me is two hidden gems "Sea of Faith" and "Fighting Man" which are worth the asking price alone. Fighting Man is a typical anthem like rocker currently in their live set and "Sea of Faith" is just quality. In summary buy this after all the other Schenker and Vinnie Moore featured albums. "No Place to Run" and "TWTWATI" are also better albums than this.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than The Crap They Call "New Music".......2005-07-31

This albums rocks! It simply rocks. If you are looking
for something to bang your head, buy this album.
Alot of the newer groups out there really suck.
I've been waiting for another "Nirvana" to come
out and shake things up. Until that happens albums
like this will do nicely. Great lyrics, great singing,
great rhythm, EXCELLENT guitar work by Michael Schenker.
And NO lyrics about "bling bling", being a player pimp,
or degrading women. Just straight-ahead rock and roll.
Eddie Van Halen needs to listen to albums like this
when preparing for the new album (whenever that will be).

4 out of 5 stars "Jaws" is more like it!.......2005-07-22

Phil, Pete, Micheal and Ansley rock out! This is a killer
album. It took a few listens to it to really appreciate it
as a UFO album but it really does rank up there with the
other albums. No one can argue that these guys still blow
away most bands out there. It's too bad Micheal can't stick
around. If you like the Moog/Way albums you'll love this!

2 out of 5 stars Boring American-influenced cheese-rock.......2005-01-27

UFO has sunk to new lows--sounds like they spent about 15 minutes coming up with this rehashed set of predictable riffs they have the audacity to call songs. Phil, Pete, and Michael have spent far too much time hanging around Mike Varney and American "cheese" metal. It's unbelievable how uninspired and unoriginal this material is! How could the unparalleled Mogg/Schenker writing partnership have deteriorated so completely? Seems they need a real producer to develop their songwriting efforts in a more sophisticated direction. Ron Nevison's influence on Walk on Water must have been the difference. The material may not have been up to par w/ classic UFO, but it held up under scrutiny and repeated listenings. I honestly believe too many of our favorite Euro rockers got poisoned by the cheesy/bluesy/metal mainstream American music scene. Priest, Scorps, UFO all lost their originality as soon as metal got big--they all wanted the Def Leppard cash-out. Sellouts tarnishing their unique achievements earlier in their careers. Sad.

Full title Like a Black Van Parked on a Dark Curve.... Long lost third album for UK rock act featuring original members, Chris Spedding (guitarist extraordinaire) & Steve 'Snips' Parsons (vocals) with the addition of Pete Thomas on drums (Elvis Costello & The Attractions) & Jackie Badger on bass. 12 page booklet features sleeve notes. 2001 release.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Where's the groove?.......2003-01-10

25 years after their last album, half the original band puts out a record half as good as their first two. For those who know the early Sharks, their strength lay in a loose, funky groove that propelled their English strutting boogie. Chris Spedding's minimal understated guitar parts allowed the remarkable rhythm section of either AndyFraser or Buster Jones and Marty Simon to pound out some of the funkyest rock and roll ever heard. On Like a Black Van . . . , however, despite the presence of the great Pete Thomas, the rhthym section is totally leaden. None of the songs contain even a hint of that fat groove from the earlier material.

Most will remember Snips has having one of the most gloriously ravaged voices in rock and roll. Strangely, 25 years later, rather than his voice eroding further, his voice has cleaned up (clean living?). Still raw, but lacking that primal croak that made you wonder whether it might just break down completely before the record would end.

It's good to hear Snips and Spedding together again, but unfortunately, this reunion is sadly incomplete without the distinctive grooves of "First Water" and "Jab It In Yore Eye".

5 out of 5 stars Sharks formed in 1973, not 1975.......2002-03-04

Nitpicking, perhaps, but the first Sharks album, First Water, was released by Island Records in 1973.

4 out of 5 stars "Fin" for the Sharks.......2001-10-12

The third (and final) album from the English rock outfit originally formed in 1973 by former Free bassist Andy Fraser (Fraser quit Sharks after only one album). The sessions for "Like A Black Van..." actually began circa 1976, but were scrapped when the band split up. Thanks to a rabid (and rich, we would assume) fan, original Sharks members Snips (vocals) and Chris Spedding (guitar) were lured back to the studio in 1995(!) to re-unite and finish the project (sounds like an episode of "Fantasy Island"). Was it worth it? If you're already a Sharks, Chris Spedding or Snips fan, you won't be disappointed. The boys show us they can still kick serious... on this set, delivering songs with memorable hooks and energetic performances. In fact, Spedding's lead guitar playing is some of his most inspired to date, and Snips' already unique voice seems to actually improve with age. A worthy addition to any classic rock collection.

If you've listened to and enjoyed other SKM releases, you will be delighted at this one. Though its 3 tracks clock in at just under 22 minutes, it is loaded with the artistic lyrics and grooving musical stylings SKM has become known for. These guys dive right into it on Tied To The Tracks with acrobatic percussion and surreal guitar. Like A River is a mellow, jazzy 11 minute ear bender. The title track finishes the album nicely with a jammy, classic SKM instrumental.

Can't wait to see what these guys do next!
