This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

I actually heard this on Ohio State's Radio Station, WOSU, way
back in the summer of 1971, I'd just picked up my dog from the vet's, there was a thundershower going on, and this fantastic
album came on the air. I was immediately entranced with it, and
immediately bought the LP. It was out of print for many years,
and so last summer when I was in Seattle for Cycle One of the Ring, I was overjoyed to see a copy of this at Tower Records;and
instantly purchased it.

This is quite possibly one of the best Early Music discs ever
made, bar none. In fact, I believe it set off the Early Music
Revolution-without it, there might be a much smaller interest in
Early Music due to living history enthusiasts, such as the SCA
(Society for Creative Anachronism), Renfaire devotees, and others.

This is the germinal album that started it all: it was the first time that a historical movie had been accurately scored
with the music and instruments of the timeperiod-and David Mun-
row's Early Music Consort's lively interpretations galvanized
a belated enthusiasm for Early Music that continues to evolve
to this very day.

In short, BUY THIS ALBUM-it is a classic. And wonderful to listen to. An added frisson is the Song by King Henry VIII him-
self, "Pastime With Good Company," in his younger days he was
quite the all-round renaissance man, jouster, writer, composer,
athlete, and his music is pretty good, too.

As a companion album to this, I would highly recommend one of the other David Munrow albums to start with, Two Renaissance
Dance Bands, which is LP format was known as Music of the Court:
Music for King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I." This contrasts the
dance music heard at both courts, and the times, also a desert
island early music disc.

In short, BUY THIS DISC!!!!!!!!!!!It kicks musical Uknowwhat!!!

It completely shatters the old, long-held belief that Early Music was dull, dull, dull. Far from it. It was every bit as
lively as anything from the 18th, 19th centuries, and our own.

5 out of 5 stars I'm thrilled to find this is now available on CD!.......2006-01-02

I first received this album as a gift way back in the early 70's, when I was an eleven year old Henry VIII fan. It is often thought to be the score for the BBC six-part series The Six Wives Of Henry VIII, but was actually the score for a spin-off movie by the same name, also starring Keith Michell as King Hal. The six-part series actually did not have much music in it (low budget).

This album has excellent examples of early music, performed on period instruments. It features one song written by Henry VIII, as well as many authentic period pieces. There are a couple of "cheats" - a setting of a poem purportedly written by Anne Boleyn in the Tower before her execution, and a Robin and Marian ballad which was written specifically for the movie, but the rest is authentic and authentically performed. The weakest part of the album is a poor choice in counter tenor, who performs Pastime In Good Company and the song made from the Anne Boleyn poem - he has problems with pitch and diction. Otherwise, the album is purely thumbs up.

This CD is actually a re-release of an old album not from the TV series but actually from a spin-off movie. The TV series is titled, "The Six Wives of Henry VIII". The movie was called "Henry VIII & His Six Wives" (which, unfortunately, was never released on video or DVD here in the states, but may be one day). Regardless, this music from the film is a wonderful example of Tudor and Elizabethan music played on authentic instruments by on of the greatest early music scholars and musicians, the late David Munrow. This is an excellent CD for fans of early music and anyone who wants to experience the true sounds of the period.

I saw the mini series on PBS and I now own the videos. I believe it is on a box set of DVD's too. The music on this CD is the soundtrack to the series. If you loved Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson playing Queen Elizabeth back in the 1970's you will definitely love this series. The music and the acting are so incredibly good.

Speaking as a huge star trak fan, this album has nothing for me.
It's a bunch of old stale beats and bass lines with a whole heap of ads for BBC and icecream spat over the top of it. If you're into the aphilliates or DJ Drama go ahead and get it- you may even like it. But it seems all he has done for the album is put the old "gangsta gangsta" sample through all 21 f#@*'n tracks.
I like pharrell for his music. not his rhymes. but hey if you're they opposite to me, knock yourself out. then when u wake up buy the album.

Look This Album is hot. Im Talking hot its a real hot album. Check me out Pharrell mayne he got some nice lines. Check it out. The Album is going to be even bonkers its crazy. Anyone who reads this Preal spit some hot lines. Im thinking mayne Rell cant spit, well i lied to my self. Either hes stepped up or he has Kanye ghostwritting for him. Oh and that song with Twista mayne Boiling.

Basically, this mixtape has pre-in-my-mind good songs, ovally hyped by The Neptunes' energetic productions, and remixes of underrated songs which failed to go large in their day. Even as pre-release mixtapes go (like Dretox), this doesn't fully portray Pharrell's best work and therefore i suggest you wait for the album to release. Pharrell doesn't show much solo talent in these songs, as he has with the addictive "angel" and his well-sampled (yet mediochre) "Can I Have It Like That".

The best songs in this album are It Was A Great Day, Lavish, High Rollers and Sumil Thakrar. The rest are decent, but i feel the album's production does not flow well, and gets tiring after some point in most songs.

I should start by stating that this disc should appeal to (1) diehard fans of that extraordinary 1968-1970 version of Spooky Tooth (most of whom probably have these recordings already), (2) to fans of blue-eyed British soul (like the early Spencer Davis Group), and (3) to those curious about the lesser-knowns of the Sixties British Music Scene.

Although the line-up of the Carlyle-based (Brum region) V.I.P.s or Vips changed with some frequency (including Keith Emerson briefly), the mainstays of the group included gravel-voiced Mike Harrison, bass Greg Ridley, and the somewhat under-rated Mike Hernshaw. This group consistently failed to make a true impact on the British charts despite several solid singles including the Spooky-Tooth like "I Wanna Be Free" (1966).

In fact they found their greatest success in France (where most of these tracks were actually released on a series of now-rare EPs) and Northern Germany, where they played at the Star Club in Hamburg and in a series of military-base clubs for British soliders. Just as their luck seemed to be running out, the line-up of Harrison, Ridley, drummer Mike Kellie, and newcomer Luther Grosvenor found favor with Island Records and producer Guy Stevens and thanks to a quick name change to Art and a beefed up quaisi psychedelic sound, recorded a one-off album that began to attract a bit more local attention. In 1968 Chris Blackwell and producer Jimmy Miller introduced American expatriot Gary Wright to the group and the rest, as they say, is history (= Spooky Tooth).

As to these recordings: the sound quality varies considerably. They were definitely recorded under less-than-optimal conditions, and often, it would seem, in a single take with little or no overlays or dubbing. The playing is at times very ragged, and they only occasionally signal the brilliance that was to become eveident in Spooky Tooth's albums like "It's All About" and "Spooky Two." The truth is, one clearly sees the reason for the lackluster response to this band, and why they remained obscure for so long. Still, after years of only being able to obtain their recordings via suspect re-issues (both vinyl and CD) or via the over-priced original European releases, it is nice that the German Repertoire label has done what it so admirably does now, and re-issue the entire output on a single disc.

French Baroque Opera is often regarded as serious, mithologic, dramatic and ..."a little bit boring" as an english traveler of the XVIIIth century said (Dr. Charles Burney?). But with this recording by Naxos you won't have any chance but to disagree with him. Hervé Niquet is a master of his art and takes the challenge of this brillant score with passion, energy and humor. The orchestra and the singers are superb, with that very french witty style and elegance. The clarity and transparency of sound are so overwhelming that it mekes you feel as if you were enjoying an aristocratic divertissement in one of those french chateaux of the XVIIIth century instead of being listening to it at home...you need only to close your eyes and imagine you are just there!

I find the opera Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse the culimination of Boismortier's career, for it contains such a variety of ideas and motifs that it could only be the product of a seasoned composer. The plot is a takeoff of the classic story of Don Quixote. The characters are at once charming and witty, and the events of the story are so surprising, unexpected and humorous that while listening to the opera for the first time I burst out laughing in many places at the hilarity and sheer novelty of the work. This opera is a magnificent contrast to the typically dark and dramatic Baroque opera. The words are pushed along by a vivacity and life I have never experienced in any other music. Typically, Boismortier is dismissed as a minor composer of the Baroque, but, considering myself a person quite knowledgeable of music of this period, I can not understand why anybody would think this. During his life Boismortier was one of the most prolific and successful composers in all of Europe. His melodies are sweet and simple, joyful and above all full of a love for life that have seen in the works of no other composer. I have nothing but praise for this man and his music, and I can wholeheartedly recommend the purchase of his opera Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse.
