Phaedra Is My Name..........2004-07-10
Okay, so Ladytron put together a pretty good mix of tunes. Some rock, some hip hop, some electro, some indie... something for everyone basically. Stand out tracks (for me) are the "new" version of Ladytron's "Blue Jeans" (i'm guessing the original is on L&M, which i haven't listened to that much), and "Teenage Daughter" by Fat Truckers (some other reviewer didn't like this song but I think it rules. I thought hearing the phrase "teenage daughter" a hundred times would wear on me but it really hasn't). I also don't mind Ladytron's cover of Tweet's "Oops On My" but I would have left it alone if I were them.
But what really rocks my boat seriously, is the very last track on the cd, called "Some Velvet Morning," a duet by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra. My life could've been incomplete forever had I not found this gem of a song on Ladytron's cd. I am absolutely nuts over it. The song plays out like a musical duel, shifting between Hazlewood's sleepy cowboy-esque ballad and Sinatra's "step-one-two" Lawrence Welk-ish coos. The vocal parts entwine closer and closer together until the listener is getting single lines alternating in time. I can't adequately explain how wonderful this song is. Whichever member of Ladytron that selected this song for Softcore Jukebox has given me a beautiful gift indeed.
hmmmm.......2004-06-24
so im glad they at least didnt try to mix all these songs together in a continuous "dj" mix. that probably would've sounded atrocious. i bought it for the oops oh my cover, and was disappointed. ladytron using real drums, and a fuzzed up guitar? come on, it sounded kinda bad. i love ladytron, but paying like 17 bucks for a mix cd they made with a crappy new version of blue jeans and a kinda lame cover on it isnt really worth it. but i bought it anyway. it gets 3 stars cuz i love ladytron and wouldnt give them anything less, even if they released an album of them farting.
Soundtrack of my life.......2004-04-22
I always wondered what sort of music inspired Ladytron. Now we have mix record by them. I usually don't look forward to mix albums but this seemed too good to pass on. Of course there is the cool punk bands here like Wire and The Fall. There is stuff from the sixties, including Nancy & Lee and Shocking Blue. There is all of Ladytron's labelmates at Invicta Hi-fi like Snap Ant, Dondolo, and Pop Levi. There is some good stuff from the past like My Bloody Valentine, Cristina, and New Fast Automatic Daffodils. There is even a new version of Ladytron's "Blue Jeans." Even better Ladytron does "Oops Oh My" which I hope is going to be the new direction for the next Ladytron album. This is a god party mix and an idea of some of the stuff that Ladytron DJ team plays at the clubs they do in London.
From the Ladytron archives..........2003-12-25
The boys from Ladytron payed visit to Australia in 2003 and did a few dj spots, I didn't see them live but caught their performance on (cable's Channel [V]) Room 208 TV show (sort of a teenage disco on TV) where they played a mix of music like what you get on this CD.
I love the ecelectic mix they've presented here, everything from a lesser known Shocking Blue track, My Bloody Vaelntine's very funky and swoonsome "Soon", Fanny Pack (which is truly great by the way), The Fall (Hit The North - one of their best) and loads more. I've not heard of some of these artists (Seelenluft, Pop Levi, Dondolo) but most are great although Teenage Daughter by the Fat Truckers must be the dumbest thing I've heard in ages.
Ladytron get a look in twice with a remix of Blue Jeans (if ever a song was made for strippers, this is it) and their (sorry, but *slightly* disappointing) version of Tweet's Oops, Oh my.
All in all a great compilation that makes me feel like I've popped around to their place for the afternoon to go through their record collection (if only!).
SoftCore Dreamy Jukebox!.......2003-11-23
This CD is awesome. You need to find a quiet place lay down on some pillows and relax to the sounds and songs of this CD. The dreamy essence of all of the selections will put you at ease especially after a hard day of work. I especially like the tracks from WIRe and Nancy SInatra/Lee Hazelwood- it so totally rocks. Ladytron puts on a good show for anyone that is interested.
Enjoy!

Easily one of my favorite cd's.......2003-05-21
I picked this one up off a sites recommendation as I listened to the samples I fell in love with it! All I need to hear was a few melodies and I was hooked. The first thing that attracted me was the sound of the lead guitar it has a healthy ethereal sound mixed with an acoustic sound and slightly metallic like, not in the metal sense at all. Its like the sound of someone who chews tinfoil and the sound is represented buy the feal of this strange phenomenon, no it doesn't hurt or irritate your nerves, but that the best way to describe it. Think "Fugazi". There compositional work is great I love how the songs develop. To me this is the sound of an evolved punk sound and I think if only all punk sounded this way maybe I would officially call myself a punk again, but frankly I am embarrassed to do so with the recent sell out to MTV... What is weird is that I say the guitar had an ethereal sound well during 1977 most punks didn't like "Pink Floyd" for its ethereal sound, they said it was pompous?! This I learned from reading a review of "Pink Floyd's" "Animals" so its rather Ironic that punk has changed in this way. Tho you might think ethereal? It might not be the word you chose but I think so purely on how it affects my emotions. It often times reminds me of "sunny day real estate's" song "pillars" of the album "how it feels to be something on". Many emo bands these day have shed their punk influences from 3 chord punk and play what mostly sounds like indie. At least that how I felt about the difference between "Juliana Theory's" First compared to the Second album. I told this to my friends and they said of course it is emo, its real emotional! And so is Pink Floyd but do we call it emo? Blahhh what do you know of emo.. But this very much still has an original emo sound to it in much the sense that it is hard to call it emo or punk, like "Fugazi", I feal. And as the name implies this a serious band not some immature group of people who sing of bubblegum and lame "I had a bad break up" types of songs. Lastly at times I think of "Avail" when I hear this CD. Anyway now that my totally lame review is up I must say I whole heartily recommend "Lifetime" CD "Hello Bastards" try that one out sometime its ones of those CDs that has been long forgotten but rules! In fact I don't think they were ever really popular anywhere except New Jersey where they are from or maybe it was DC ??? can't remember. Over and out... Note! P.s! if any of my other reviews get published you will notice my complaint of emo and for the most part I don't like what people are calling emo, but neither do I think it is actually emo at all.. plus all my industrial friends hate emo, well what it has come to be known as and not what it is. Go to audiogalaxy home page and read the article about hot bodi gram and then please burn your braid CDs and stop whining and crying about your love life will you? Other wise we will be stuck in a 1950s nightmare of perfectionism and repression. But you like to listen to what is effectively the musical version of leave it to beaver.. Sigh.. Like "They Might be Giants"???!!! oh God save us all! But Manifesto Jukebox will save you!! Smiles with glee!
lost in the shuffle?.......2003-02-23
with so many "product"bands being spewed out at us at a frightning pace,so many unknowns are virtually lost in the shuffle, bands like "manifesto jukebox","leatherface" and even lesser knowns like "dumping page" have remained somewhat obscure until recent times.bless the boys at BYO for bringing to light these great bands,it would be recommended that one look into the back cataloges of bands like manifesto jukebox(like the desire c.d.)to witness some of the greatest punk to date, lets hope byo continues to re-release/release this stuff for a long time to come....
Manifesto Jukebox - Remedy.......2002-07-01
There's an uneasy level of silence about this band. I've seen very little reviews of "Remedy" so far and it's a probably because the album isn't easy to gauge on the first few listens.
Manifesto Jukebox if a Finnish trio roughly in the same vein as Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike, Leatherface and early Fugazi. The band exhibits the same gruff vocal style and swirling guitar-play as their contemporaries, making far more noise then a three-piece should. "Remedy" charges by at a frantic pace, rarely relying on a particular hook to carry a song as much as riding the wave created from the onset. In this respect the Jukebox may not be immediately satisfying, but their songs have enough substance that you'll find yourself returning time and time again to savor their intricacies. The sonic chaos at times gives way to incredibly effective mood-setting instrumentals. The atmosphere that the buildup to "Exists To Sanity" expresses is truly amazing.
Lyrically the band is heads and tails over anything else I've heard this year (some possible translation awkwardness aside). Just reading through the liner notes along with the Antti's vicious-to-anguished vocal range is fascinating. The lyrics are a good example of how the band has forgone common pop-songwriting conventions. The verses are built on more complex multisyllabic word structures then usually attempted (they use both the words "omnipresent" and "lethargy" in the opening line to a song, if you've ever studied pop-songwriting, that's about as unconventional as it gets). Most importantly, the complexities don't affect the pacing or delivery.
Unfortunately the vocals get lost in the mix at times. The band has a dense enough sound that lower range vocals don't pack the power they should. On a similar level, the band's shouts are all the more effective and work incredibly well with their sound. The title track has some fantastically charging verses that bring to mind Sick Of It All, of all things.
Spend some time with "When Bubbles Burst," "No Love Lost," "Remedy" and "Consent" to get a feel for the band. The more times I spin this, the more I like it. I wouldn't be surprised to see this release falling under everyone's radar yet sneaking onto a lot of top-10 lists this year.

Lame.......2004-06-15
While not as sucky as the first one, it's still full of songs that shouldn't be covered by these bands, or even covered at all. None of these songs stand up to the originals, and a lot of the bands have a "generic" sound. (...)
This C.D. kicks ..........2002-08-18
This is one of the best c.d.s I've ever heard! I always loved Anti-Flag. That band is what got me into the whole pittsburgh punk scene. They have the best music. Fast paced and excellent guitarwork. I bought all of Anti-Flags C.D.s and there best one is Die For The Government. If you liked this C.D. I would recomend bands like Virus*Nine, Thought Riot and any of those kinds of bands
A Great Combination.......2000-07-15
After seeing Antiflag at warped tour in cleveland, I had to listen to more. This CD had a great combination of groups such as the Dropkick Murphys, Purpose, Antiflag, and a bunch more. It's the typical fast moving punk, nothing slow in this album. More expensive than most people want to pay for a CD nowadays, but it's worth it. You will not be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Great comp -- still relevant 10 years later.......2005-08-07
I used to own this CD, but it seems to have "disappeared" (along with several others) a few weeks ago -- right around the same time my girlfriend and I broke up. Ironically, I think I "borrowed" it from an old girlfriend to begin with. What comes around goes around, I guess. Anyway, I'm rebuilding my CD collection, not to mention my life, and I figured I'd start with Punk Rock Jukebox. I just got my new copy, and it's as fresh and relevant as it was in 1995. There are so many good bands on here... bands that, had they been around today instead of back then, would be selling insane quantities of records and selling out large theaters nightly. I guess this actually happened for one of the comp's bands, Sublime (R.I.P. Brad Nowell), but it's a shame that more people haven't heard some of the others. So to anyone reading this: here's your chance! This comp features 23 solid 90s punk acts covering their favorite punk songs from yesteryear. The Swingin' Utters' cover of Cocksparrer's "I Got Your Number," The Goops' version of Stiff Little Fingers' "Barbed Wire Love," and Brody's rendition of Dag Nasty's "Justification" are standouts. Each captures the same spirit as the original while putting a new spin on it. I think the Brody song is the last track they ever recorded. Singer Keith Cucuzza is in rare form here, raw and guttural, while maintaining his melodic style. H2O's rendition of Marginal Man's "Friend" is also strong. I had the pleasure of seeing them play this song in New York. I remember Todd Morse (who had just joined on guitar) totally took out some would-be stage diver with the headstock of his guitar. Blood everywhere. Not a pretty sight. But the band played on. Now that's punk rock! Last word: Don't let the hokey cover art fool you; this CD is the real thing.

Only heard tracks 1, 3, 4, 7, and 8 but they're SO GREAT.......2001-11-27
Those tracks were on an album I had on a Scientists cassette in high school (mid to late 80's) called Weird Love and it was a crunchy, growling, grinding, unholy and wholly beautiful slab o' noise I listened to over and over and desperately wish I still owned. In my zealotry to spread the gospel of garage I loaned it to some heathen who never gave it back (you know who you are!), so now I can buy this! You should too! I'll miss "Demolition Derby", but that's okay. The Bond cover is worth the price, "so pay the price" as Shirley sang for James. Make one dream come true, and give the Scientists reason to live twice. You folks who need references, think The Cramps on No-Doz and bread mold, with even more songs about girls and car crashes. Ya got that?

Customer Reviews:
AUTHENTIC BRITROCK.......2003-06-01
Dury made observant, witty and intelligent music that was authentic British rock and pop with a strong dance undertone. Reasons To Be Cheerful and Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick both have insistent hooks and a funky dance rhythm, delivered in half-spoken cockney accent. The amusing Razzle In My Pocket is a humorous tale about a stolen library book similarly performed in a spoken vocal style. What A Waste and Wake Up And Make Love are delicious pop songs. The old-style rock 'n roll song Sweet Gene Vincent is a magnificent tour de force with a subdued poetic introduction leading up to soaring vocals and killer hook. The bouncy Sex & Drugs & Rock `n Roll and lilting I Wanna Be Straight are sweeping and witty comments on the music scene. Common As Muck has funny literary references. The arrangements are impressive too, especially the expert use of piano and sax to give the songs that well rounded feeling of perfection. Jukebox Dury is an album of absolutely priceless music that impresses with its variety, melodic beauty and intelligence.
